But even if foreigners wanted to enter Russia, Russians simply don’t want them, no matter the economic consequences. Russia is infamously a nation of xenophobes ruled over by a proud KGB spy who is utterly paranoid of foreign invaders. (Putin recently accused the nation’s leading steel company of making too many sales to foreigners, with the result that the company’s stock lost half its value and the wider market entered a free fall state.) When was the last time you saw a tourism ad sponsored by the Russian government urging foreigners to come for a visit?
Xenophobia is, in fact, official policy. Putin routinely claims that foreign-supported NGOs are nothing but nests of spies, and launched a furious assault on them, which even included the innocuous British Council cultural exchange group a few months ago. More, recently, the Kremlin launched a furious salvo at oil major BP, driving its foreign staff out of the country with their tails between their legs, and banned Russia’s leading foreign investor, an avowed Russophile, from ever entering the country again just because he called for a bit of accounting transparency. (The same fate befell oil oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, except that he ended up in a Siberian gulag.)
Worst of all, though, Russians can’t seem to stand the sort of dark-skinned foreigners who come from even more economically and socially backward areas of the world and who might be attracted to Russia. The people from the war-torn breakaway region of Chechnya bear the brunt of this hostility. Apartment rental and personal ads routinely declare that the dark-skinned are not welcome.
But inevitably, the vacuum condition of labor shortage draws in desperate alien workers. The Moscow Times reports: “While there are around two million migrant laborers working legally in the country, the number of illegal workers is estimated at up to eight million, a spokesman for the Federal Migration Service said.” Russia, in other words, hardly welcomes these “different” people, but they come anyway, illegally. It’s no surprise, then, to see incidents of race violence exploding in Russia, as we reported last week, for example. Yet, but for their presence, the Russian economy would already have imploded in a catastrophic failure of anemic production. Even as it is, inflation is spiraling out of control as too much oil money chases too few goods and services. The Moscow Times quotes Gulnara Safarova, a human resources specialist at Cushman & Wakefield Stiles & Riabokobylko: “Without [illegal migrant] workers, it’s impossible now to imagine any building process, because Russian labor resources are so limited.”
As more such workers appear, Russia’s racist minions become more and more active in seeking to wipe them out, or at least terrorize them into fleeing. In so doing, they are Russia’s worst enemy, depriving the nation of a lifeline work force without which its economy will surely founder and sink just as that of the USSR did before it.
So a time bomb is ticking in Russia. It’s running out of native citizens and it’s running out of good will to attract foreigners. It’s turning into a desert in which roam a few well-connected oligarchs who have hoarded the nation’s natural resource wealth.
John McCain has called for the world to confront Russia and demand justice for those the Kremlin is oppressing. And where is Barack Obama, the most prominent minority candidate for power in the history of Western civilization?
He is nowhere to be heard.

The rest was local anarchy born of police-&-tax-collector local governments whom the population bore like a dog does fleas. The political theory is theft and sadism, velvetized by images borrowed from Byzantium. Like its southern Arab neighbors, Russia is a permanent problem for its own people and for the world. It stands for infantile chauvanism, cunning, and cruelty. May it finally, in the near future, cannibalize itself, so that a new generation lacking the egotism which resists wholesome and creative instruction can finally clean this wasteland and build up a good nation. Until then it’s going to be mafiosi vs. mafiosi vs. dupes & patsies. Tragic, and disgusting.
At least modern Russians are proud to be Russian, and while they take it too far, men can be men. This will be their salvation and strength, while the west falls all over themselves to embrace feminine and feminist values, and shy away from anything that resembles patriotism. Russia will not go down the PC road that is destroying Scandinavia and the UK. In 10 years, when Europe is dominated by muslims with the whites acting like simpering slaves, Russia will be strong.
Avoiding etting your butt kicked is a good motivator for assimilation.

Re: Russia’s demographic crisis, don’t forget emigration, which is still going on, particularly among evangelical Christians, who are persecuted in Russia and are consequently emigrating to the West (mostly to the US) in large numbers. In their adopted homeland, some of them are now — ironically — happily engaged in persecuting others, particularly gays and lesbians. Last year, near Sacramento, an Indian-Fijian man was beaten to death by Slavic immigrants because they thought he was a “f@ggot.” Gay-bashing is now rife in Sacramento, thanks largely to the new Russian and Ukrainian immigrants.
If Muslim immigrants were doing the same thing, there would be an outcry… but since the people doing it are white European Christians — crickets.
I am in no way excusing violence against minorities but perhaps the Russians have paid attention to the demographic crises in Western Europe and the suicidal immigration policies that are importing tens of millions of Muslims who don’t intend to assimilate but rather via immigration and demographics intend to dominate Europe and transform it into a Muslim continent. Russia is determined to remain Russian.
Given their demographic decline and their proximity to a resource hungry neighbor, China, I expect China to invade and annex Eastern Russia in a couple decades.

It’s one thing to avoid non-assimilating Muslim immigrants. It’s another to keep out everyone else especially when native Russians are imploding from higher death rates, lower birth rates, and emigration to escape Putin’s paradise. Western Europe does face a major problem with Muslim minorities. But those Islamic minorities aren’t the only immigrants they have and their native populations aren’t dying off like native Russians. They still have a possible future. Russia, on the other hand, is going to implode. No nation can survive such negative growth when it is already so far behind developmentally. And this situation is going to get rapidly worse and worse each year. In the end, the Chinese and Koreans will just walk into Siberia and take it over by simply being the only one’s left.

Russia’s population will stabilize in the near future, with immigration, increasing birth rates and decreasing emigration and death rates converging. The Russian economy will weather the current troubles and still maintain a healthy growth rate. No part of Siberia will become part of China in the lifetime of anyone alive today. Immigrants will still arrive in Russia in numbers measuring hundreds of thousands a year. The number of racist crimes in Russia will grow for the near future before falling after 2010.

Yes, Russia has racism and hate crimes. These are social problems coming out of the complex processes in the Russian society, which is in transition from communism to capitalism and democracy. Yes, there may be increase in this kind of crimes. Or it could be just a better reporting and registration of this kind of crimes compared to the previous years. I know, Russian authorities, courts and law enforcement are paying more attention to the problem now.

The domestic price was 4,100 rubles ($176), and they were selling it to themselves, across the border, for 1,100 rubles, and then sells the product for $323,” Putin said in televised comments.
“It is a reduction in the tax basis inside the country. It’s not paying taxes, it’s creating a shortfall on the domestic market, which means an increase in the cost of metals production,” he said.

I don’t think Putin’s remarks were appropriate, and I’m glad Medvedev’s advisor criticized him and Medvedev came out and said, “We have to stop [state officials] from terrorizing business.” and specifically referred to shakedowns of small business owners [pinches or bites] in a meeting with them. Whether words will be followed by action, I do not know. But for the record, I don’t think any politician anywhere should single out any company for criticism until that senior management of that firm have been convicted in a court of law (i.e. Enron). Leave the indictments and charges to the courts and prosecutors.
Khodorkovsky in fact, was guilty of tax evasion on a massive scale, and his chief of security Oleg Pichugin engaged in contract killings with Leonid Nevzlin’s knowledge, hence the Israeli authorities allowing Russian prosecutors to press charges against him in Israel (not sure about all the extraterritorial legal issues therein). When the Russian Prosecutor General’s office sent a delegation to Israel to present their evidence against Nevzlin and to London for Berezovsky – suddenly Politkovskaya was murdered, then Litvinenko perished in his horrible, exotic, made for TV death. Do I think those are coincidences? Maybe, but since Klebnikov was killed after accusing Berezovsky of being Russia’s biggest mob boss, do you think Berezovsky should at least be considered a suspect? I do believe Russia has wellsprings of renewal within itself, and everytime the West writes Russia off it comes roaring back, historically – whether we’re talking about the 1600s (Time of Troubles), 20th century (Bolshevik Revolution, then near collapse in 1941, and seventy years of failed Communist tyranny) or now (demographic/health crisis, maintaining Russia’s territorial integrity).
I do think Russia will survive and will come back prosperous, I just wonder how much it will shrink before Greater China and how many decades will pass before it becomes a nation that has moved beyond totally relying on natural resources for its prosperity. Will China be able to regain those territories depends on Russia’s and China’s further development and the balance of their power there. I do not think Chinese will be ever interested in something else: the farther to the North it is too cold even? for Manchurians, not mention the Han Chinese. And to the West lays the Russian Siberia and European Russia. To take these remote and hostile territories Chinese would need another Genghis Khan. How long may it take for China to become that strong, and Russia that weak, if ever? Will the World change so, that it would be possible to redraft the borders again, without risk of annihilation in another World War, this time nuclear? Who knows?
