Rebel Commander in Libya Fought Against U.S. in Afghanistan
Shortly after unrest broke out in eastern Libya in mid-February, reports emerged that an “Islamic Emirate” had been declared in the eastern Libyan town of Darnah and that, furthermore, the alleged head of that Emirate, Abdul-Hakim al-Hasadi, was a former detainee at the American prison camp in Guantánamo. The reports, which originated from Libyan government sources, were largely ignored or dismissed in the Western media.
Now, however, al-Hasadi has admitted in an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore that he fought against American forces in Afghanistan. (Hat-tip: Thomas Joscelyn at the Weekly Standard.) Al-Hasadi says that he is the person responsible for the defense of Darnah — not the town’s “Emir.” In a previous interview with Canada’s Globe and Mail, he claimed to have a force of about 1,000 men and to have commanded rebel units in battles around the town of Bin Jawad.
“I have never been at Guantánamo,” al-Hasadi explained to Il Sole 24 Ore. “I was captured in 2002 in Peshawar in Pakistan, while I was returning from Afghanistan where I fought against the foreign invasion. I was turned over to the Americans, detained for a few months in Islamabad, then turned over to Libya and released from prison in 2008.”
Al-Hasadi’s account is largely confirmed by investigations conducted by Praveen Swami, the diplomatic editor of the British daily The Telegraph. Swami originally wrote about al-Hasadi’s background in the Afghan jihad in a March 21 column. In response to a query from the present author, Swami was able to obtain confirmation of al-Hasadi’s arrest and transfer to Libya from what he describes as a “senior source” in the Afghan government.
According to a separate UK intelligence source contacted by Swami, al-Hasadi was released by the Libyan government as part of a deal that was struck with the al-Qaeda-affiliated Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIGF). The LIGF has long opposed the rule of Muammar al-Gaddafi in Libya.

There’s no doubt that there are elements of the uprising that are Islamist and fought us in Iraq and Afghanistan. But I doubt it is more than 2%. Look at how the downed US pilot was treated by the rebels. Also, they are carrying the flag of the Libyan monarchy – a sure sign they’re not al Qaida.
Elements or leaders? Your conclusion is overly broad from the evidence you’ve cited, but nice job of carrying you know who’s flag.
I’ve checked it out, its true. President Obama has committed our troops to fight for Al-Quieda for what ever reason. This is one reason to confer with Congress, they have this information and would have stopped the debacle, what next; sending Marines to help Hugo Chavez put down and insurrection against his dictatorship?
yes!!! they are all in this “conspiracy” together. What else do we expect from Obama? The man needs to get ot of office and out of our country!!!!
I do not understand why congress is just sitting through this.
And you base this estimate on what data? As far as the flag, what were they supposed to use as a symbol? It’s not like they had time to hire a graphic arts team to whip up a new banner to rally around.
I don’t base this data on anything. It was pulled directly out of my ass. Nevertheless, I know a bit about the region. And I will say this: there was reason to be wary about the opposition in Egypt, but there is less reason to be wary of the Libyan opposition.
This doesn’t mean I favor the way Obama is handling the operation. And it doesn’t mean I am suspicious about aspects of the Libyan rebellion. But I think the overwhelming majority of the Libyan uprising is far more preferable than Gaddafi’s regime. It’s hard to get much worse.
P.S. for the person who mentioned Afghanistan. Yes, we supported them in the 1980s. What people fail to realize is that the overwhelming majority of the Afghan fighters were the same people we supported again in 2001 — the Northern Alliance. The Taliban was the minority of the mujahideen. And the Arabs in al Qaida were an even smaller portion.
You claim to know about “the region,” but you give away how little you really do by impugning the opposition to Mubarak in Egypt.
The people in Egypt were FED UP with the Pharaoh in the Abdin Palace. My sister-in-law still goes down to Tahrir Square every day to express her opposition to those Thugs!
Thugs? You mean like the moslems murdering Christians in Egypt? At least Mubarak held the moslem scum who do such in check a bit.
Or maybe your sister goes to the Square to get gang rapped and sodomized by some of your people. Or do you reserve that for Jews and Christians. And you dare to use the word thug… well I have one for those in the Square… SCUM.
Of course they treated him well, they need us on their side…..for now. When the battle is over is where the problems begin.
A study of their strategy used successfully for the past 1389 years should indicate that no flag is worth more than the dedication of its bearer. Nick seems to ignore the “friendly attitude” in Afghanistan when they needed stingers to rout the USSR or the influence of his 2% estimate with a much lower percentage effecting police in Michigan or Judges in Florida. Their numbers will increase overnight with Sharia looming.
1. Nick G.
Also, they are carrying the flag of the Libyan monarchy – a sure sign they’re not al Qaida.

I agree. Al Qaeda would never pretend to support us while we’re giving them air support, money and arms. You Rock!
I’ve been saying this for weeks now! And Zarqawi the leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq said how pleased he was that 1 Libyan city could bring so many to fight a Jihad against the occupiers and how he wanted to see how beautiful Benghazi was!
And these are our “friends.” These are the people Obama calls “rebels” and actually, actually, wants to arm now. Why do I think that if Gaddafi does fall, you will simply have another Afghanistan on the Mediterranean? Think about it, we supported the rebels in Afghanistan to defeat the Soviets and, once they left, we got the Taliban. Who is to say we won’t get the same thing in Libya if Gaddafi falls? Arabs and Muslims have been slaughtering each other for centuries. Civil wars are nothing new in that part of the world and we never, ever, should have gotten involved in this one. Now Obama has bought into it hook, line, and sinker and HAS to depose Gaddafi or risk looking like a weak jerk, which he already is. This will only confirm it with the international community. This is just pathetic. I really wish we had some experienced adults running foreign policy these days. Well, there’s always 2012.
But, according to the White House, I thought all of these “rebels” were pro-Western “freedom fighters” who just wanted to get rid of Gaddafi just so they could have a “democratic” form of government? Sure, just like the Muslim Brotherhood isn’t about to take over in Egypt. And just as in Afghanistan, where we supported the “rebels” and got the Taliban after the Soviets were defeated, we are now going to get al Qaeda in Libya once Gaddafi is defeated. Swell. So Libya will probably turn into another Afghanistan on the Mediterranean unless, of course, we want to actually put troops on the ground there for another 20 years or so. Is anybody, I mean ANYBODY, with any brains working on foreign policy at the White House these days?
The conclusion you must come to is that they will use us to achieve their own aims. they will be a friend of sorts when it is in their best interests. This is a region that thrives on violence and repression. Name me an Arab country where there is a Washington, an Adams, a Lincoln?
Unfortunately for them, there are none.
We have turned on the Arab leaders who have held together a peace of sorts (Mubarak).
Were his people any poorer than most other Arab countries? And he didn’t have any oil revenue like Ghadaffi.
I won’t get caught up in all of the Arab intrigue because while we work, they plot. But I know one thing.
If we drill our own oil and use our own resources, they can take care of themselves. I bear them no ill will but even if we gave them a beautiful democratic republic, I don’t think they can hold onto it.
Israel is our ally and deserves unwavering support. If anyone wants to be our ally, they have to step up, prove it and continue to prove it.
These Arab countries use us for their own gains and use taqyria at the drop of a hat.
“Israel is our ally and deserves unwavering support. If anyone wants to be our ally, they have to step up, prove it and continue to prove it.”
I’m curios as to how Israel has stepped up and prove time and again, that they are our ally. I wonder what metric you are using to gauge the effort of an “ally”? Is it by the amount of foreign aid (50 billion) we give to those countries or protection and services they provide for us? Because I would like to know what exactly Israel does for the United States of America. One could argue that the Saudis are more useful to US than the Israel. Without them, think about how much you will be paying at the pump.
Let be clear though…I am not saying that we should severe ties with Israel…I am just wondering if you are just spouting off your talking points you hear constantly off the TV and by our corrupt and morally bankrupt politicians on both aisles.
Drone technology comes from Israel, and America uses it to great advantage.
I like what one guy said, that he would support Israel if they were Vietnamese trying to exist there. Apart from religious history and long lists of Nobel prize recipients, Israel is a lot like Honduras. They are a decent people just trying to have self-determination in the midst of unfriendly nations.
Did you ever ask yourself WHY the nations around Israel are unfriendly? Do you seriously think it is because they hate Jews, the way the West has done for so many centuries?
Or could it just be the ETHNIC CLEANSING that Israel has been carrying out against Palestinian Arabs for the past seven decades? When Arabs are dispossessed of their lands, and their people are killed by the thousands, they tend not view the perpetrators of these crimes with great affection. How uppity of them!
Oh yes, the countries around Israel sure do treat the Palestinian Arabs like brothers.
And those peace loving Arab nations, surely Israel should aspire to be more like them and treat the palestinians in the way that Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan treat their minorities.
LOL!
I here this refrain alot, what does Israel provide?
Reliable intelligence and experience in a region of the world where we have little of both. Israel benefits from a large pool of Jews from Arab countries- who have an intimate nativist understanding of Arab culture and speak fluent Arabic without a foreign accent – and can be fully trusted because there is no concern of divided loyalty to Islam or Arab nationalism. Numerous American generals have attested to how important, but unpublicized, Israeli information has been to our military operations in the region.
Just so I had a clue about what I’m talking about, i decided to do a little googling about the Predator Drones and its Manufacturer. Being considered “world leaders in Drone Technology” does not mean that we don’t make them here in the United States. The US was the first to develop it. Look up “Red Wagon”! We’ve nurtured Israel since inception to the formidable force/country that they are today. Where do you think their Military know-how and initial ammunitions came from? Now regarding your comments about Intelligence, I get lots of intelligence from a whole host of other nations…that’s pretty much what foreign aid buys you…$50B/year of it. Would those intelligence in the middle east steadily flow if we left them to fend for themselves?
Nobel prize receipients? Most European nations have received it…ohh, you are comparing a well-funded country (Israel) vs others…that’s like comparing the Medical program at Harvard vs a Medical program at a State College. You can’t be serious.
My point is…the United States can survive and will be just fine without “intelligence” from Israel. But I don’t think Israel would be what she is today without the aid and military shield we provide them.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend…
Until he is my enemy…
Exactly so…welcome to the real world.
The enemy of my enemy is my enemy’s enemy. Nothing more. Nothing less.
(From “70 Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries”)
It just goes to show ya that the enemy of my enemy is my enemy’s enemy.
Please lets not start with sweeping ”Rebels are Al-Quaeda”, this is in fact a very good development, most of those rebel kids couldn’t kill a goat a 5 m. Having fighter experienced in urban fight will save countless lives.
Also this dude is in the minority and after the French saving Benghazi he will be laughed out of the room.
Mr. Rosenthal:
“The revelations about al-Hasadi’s involvement in the anti-American jihad are particularly troubling in light of clear evidence that Western forces are coordinating their attacks on Libyan government targets with rebel forces.”
Why do you characterize this as troubling?
So we are allies, temporarily, with a small-time erstwhile unlawful combatant in a struggle to overthrow a big-time erstwhile terrorist.
In two words…so what?
When we were supporting the Mujahadeen against the Soviets in Afghanistan, Osama Bin Laden was likely thought of as the greatest thing since sliced white bread by our intelligence assets.
Have we learned NOTHING about applied realpolitik in the Middle East?
Yesterday’s ally is tomorrow’s enemy, and today’s enemy is tomorrow’s ally. It is always thus when dealing with tribal peoples who never had benefit of the nation-state system instituted by the Treaty of Westphalia.
The only constant out around and beyond the Suez is that you better keep your “Pimp Hand” strong. You turn THEM out…or they will turn YOU out. You don’t get hung up by trying to apply our way of thinking to an alien environment, you do what is in your own interest…always.
You’d think that after fighting the Arab and Muslim world for nearly 1500 years that we’d have stumbled across a few clues.
Bilgeman, thank you for two things. First, for using the proper term “unlawful combatant.” Second, for properly pointing out the cultural dynamics in that region of the world.
Entirely too many people seem utterly ignorant of both.
Terrific.
So now, are these potential jihadi suicide bombers our allies? We should absolve them of all their murders of innocent women and children? It’s not a war crime anymore, to wear civilian clothes and use women and children for shields in a war zone?
No doubt, Congress will pass some legislation, in the middle of the night, that gives these maggots protections of the Geneva Convention, and a monthly paycheck for their stress in battle.
“So now, are these potential jihadi suicide bombers our allies?”
If that’s how you wish to characterize them, then yes, they are.
I would offer that their role is likely more that of our meat-puppets. And I have no qualms whatsoever about fighting the Qaddafi regime to the last drop of THEIR blood…do you?
No I don’t, really. But, if you think it through, you know it won’t end there.
Although your method would and has worked, It’s the same as giving a snack to that one eyed alligator in the canal by your favorite fishing spot; Some day he’ll take a bite out of you.
We’re dealing with an upright walking animal, only this one has a higher communication skill.
“But, if you think it through, you know it won’t end there.”
It hasn’t ended in 1500 years, CG, I’m not entirely sure that it ever WILL end,(or that we would recognize it if it actually did…apart from angel Gabriel blowing his trumpet and Jesus coming down from Heaven with his Big Book of You-Know-What under his arm.
” It’s the same as giving a snack to that one eyed alligator in the canal by your favorite fishing spot; Some day he’ll take a bite out of you.”
Ahh, but there never seems to be a shortage of gators in that particular canal, is there?
So I reckon that the trick is to shoot out an eye from another alligator and keep ‘em both on just-this-side of starvation diets so that they’re more interested in each other than in your stringer of tasty catfish.
“We’re dealing with an upright walking animal, only this one has a higher communication skill.”
Granted, however alligators are more dependably predictable, and in truth, often have more attractive features than some of the critters that we are dealing with.
These mercenaries and budding suicide bombers are using these conflicts for training purposes, and have been for decades. They learn more about our techniques and equipment, to sharpen their combat skills. Which, they will use against us when they think the time is right.
We are aiding one of our most ardent enemies. The less aid the better.
Bilgeman;
Please read:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/libya/8407047/Libyan-rebel-commander-admits-his-fighters-have-al-Qaeda-links.html
CG:
I grant your point about this critter’s status as a past unlawful combatant as well as his affiliation with Al-Qaeda.
I think that you’re getting hung up on Western notions of loyalty and expecting that Arabs/Bedouins/Berbers are going to exhibit the same kind of unwavering die-hard fealty to a cause that you would see in your garden-variety Chicago Cubs, Arsenal FC or Washington Redskins fan.
T’aint necessarily the case, neighbor.
Heck, Al-Qaeda itself has proven the point by killing FAR more Muslims than they have Americans/Christians/Israelis/Jews…for all their talk.
If this isn’t proof positive that they don’t necessarily share our psychology, then I don’t know what example would suffice.
The fact of the matter is that the Muslim world has a surplus of guys like al-Hasadi, for whom their only trade is soldiering…at this point, it’s all they know. And in al-Hasadi’s case, he just might be personally motivated in this fight against Qaddafi.
My point is that I wouldn’t balk at using a weapon that had been dropped by Al-Qaeda to aim it at Qaddafi.
And I wouldn’t forego using Qaddafi’s resources to take a whack at Al-Qaeda.
And I have no qualms whatsoever about fighting the Qaddafi regime to the last drop of THEIR blood…do you?
More likely that they’ll fight to the last drop of our blood. Notice how these guys are milling around waiting for us to drop ordnance on government forces instead of advancing.
I notice Bilgeman has no response.
Bilgeman;
Why do I get the feeling we’re saying the same thing, only using different verbiage?
Like I said; Let them go at it, but without our assistance. They are doing a good job without U.S. assistance.
Ghadaffi has the blood of his people as well as many Americans and Europeans on his hands. NOW is the time to whack him. What is the problem with knocking off a 2nd level Bin Laden?
They profit from our assistance by discovering our technology.
We need to keep them infighting the same way they fight in Somalia, Chad, and Gabon. Low tech, but, still fighting.
Is there any reason to expose these Islamic rebels to new military techniques and technology?
Have you read the news of the riots in London? Insurrection is spreading.
“Have you read the news of the riots in London? Insurrection is spreading.”
And to think that it all started at the Glenn Beck Rally… personally, I’m waiting to join the DC demonstrations to rid us of the corrupt tyrant who lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
“They profit from our assistance by discovering our technology.”
They can discover our technology by browsing the internet, and for the really secret stuff, keeping their subscription to the New York Times current.
But where the rubber meets the road, I wouldn’t get too worried about Al Qaeda in the Maghreb procuring a JSTARS or an AWACS aircraft to help identify targets for it’s strike fighter jets to attack with laser-guided bombs.
I read your link about the allegations of AQIM swiping SAMS from Libyan arsenals.
If true, its regrettable, but what did one expect when we decide not to put “boots on the ground”?
You probably don’t have to look too hard to find veteran foreign fighters from Afghanistan or Iraq in every Arab country. When an uprising begins against the local dictator its a surprise they’d pick up guns and run towards the sound of kinetic military activity?
Quadaffi runs a regime with a proven track record of support for terrorism against the West and a history of sowing chaos from Ulster to Liberia. If al-Hasadi is seeking martydom against The Big Q and his crew this could be seen as a win-win.
Obama and his supporters are too stupid to understand that it’s more likely lose, lose, lose.
A. If Q remains in power he’ll be more determined than ever to conduct covert action against the United States.
B. If the rebels win, then we’ll have an Islamist government in Libya.
C. A lot more people are likely to be killed in getting to A or B, than would have been killed if we had just stayed out of it.
Terry,
I’m with you. Aside from killing Gaddafi, which would probably violate US law, except for the command and control angle, I can’t see any other remote national interest that is served by our intervention. There is no up side to what we have engaged in.
Obama has acted in a blatantly irresponsible fashion. He is completely inconsistent. How about Iran, Syria, Darfur, etc? How come we haven’t intervened on humanitarian grounds in those hell holes?
My bet is this is going to come back to really bite us in the a&$ down the road.
Surprise ! Time for all the self flattering gibberish about “aspirations, freedom, democracy” and all the rest of the crap that fools spit in self congratulation. That package works, when it works at all, sometimes, & then not always substantially. The ghost of Woodrow Wilson never rests, he added mightily to the stream of self righteous blindness.
Doubtless what common sense could tell us will be suppressed or minimized in our media. They are not about to to use much energy or time calling attention to their murderous allies in the Mid East.
Obama has committed TREASON by aiding & abetting those who are known enemies of the US. Impeach him already!
I don’t believe it. The rebels aren’t fighting for a representative democracy? Well knock me down with a koran.
I was disgusted to hear and read information such as that contained in this article. We also know that the rebels are rounding up african blacks in their midst and exiling, killing and raping them. This is the crowd that our President has cast his lot with. Smartest guy in the room!
This entire Libyan affair has been surreal. We have a vested interest in getting Ghaddafi, he has killed hundreds of Americans, however, how any of the rest of the uprising has anything to do with our interests is beyond me.
Meanwhile, Syria and Iran ruthlessly supress revolt, shooting people in the streets. These countries are our sworn enemies, yet Obama does nothing. Where is the humanitarianism in that response?
The more that Obama acts as he does, the more we are exposed to the fact that he is an ideolgue with situational morals and ethics. The same is true of his supporters in the media, labor unions etc. By supporting his policies, they reveal their own immoral character.
I trust that crowd can live with the dilemma.
There is alot of buyers remorse in the United States right now.
I kept wondering who these people were? Who are we helping? Are they ‘for’ or ‘against’ the US (when we are not helping them)?. Quite Frankly, I am still not sure, but I am sure it will come out in the future…
I would like to believe the unrest and in-fighting going on in the ME is the result of many ‘young’ people who have had access to the internet and much much more information than the largeness of the Anti-West Propaganda they have been fed for so long and are finally putting two and two together. Knowledge is power.
It is my hope they are seeing the true scope of their being. The lies they have been told to keep them at bay, in check and subservient to selfish, power hungry, terrorist Leaders who care more about themselves and even less about the citizens they ‘rule’ over.
The downside to the effort would be oppressor(s) worse than before…
Let us hope Barry won’t be reelected in 2012
This guy is a real nuisance, for the USA and the whole world
Whatever he touches turns into fire,he is not not king Midas !
Waiting for 2012 may well be equivalent to waiting to observe the Libya outcome.
The Libya event will serve to reduce media exposure of emerging pressure of eligibility proof for a sitting president. The Donald knows. Some will never know as long they remain within their small neurotic “circles of success”.
Our involvement in Libya reminds me of the guy who comes home one night to find that the house is dark and there is a strong smell of gas in the air. So he lights a match to try and find the light switch.
I for one would like to see Gadafi pay for his past performance as the leader of a terrorist regime. However, I have the feeling we are being led around the garden path by the coalition, especially our dear leader.
Is Gadafi’s stature in Libya so low that he has no loyal Libyans, or is the mercenary meme a little overplayed.
I am also surprised that with the media in the government and rebel held areas we have no video of corpses, funerals, mourners or burial sites. If the press is being held back then surely the vast intelligence resources of the US government should have come up with a smoking gun.
Is that a zabibah on Abdul-Hakim al-Hasadi’s forehead (see picture)?
If so, that’s all I need to know about the loyalties of the guy. (For another fine example of a zabibah, check out http://www.nctc.gov/site/profiles/al_zawahiri.html . And FWIW, the leaders of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood also sport zabibahs, no one seems to have considered this to be significant.)
PS. I just heard Shepard Smith on Fox say that Gaddafi with his billions has enough money to keep paying mercenaries for a long time.
So, we need a two part plan.
1.) Kill K-daffy and his minions.
2.) Kill some or all of the rebels.
Works for me.
Good grief. This “enemy of my enemy is my friend” crap hasn’t worked since Stalin, at least. OTOH, perhaps Barry’s advisers have accounted for that in their long-term strategy: since everything this POTUS touches turns to crap, this could mean the beginning of the end for Al Qaeda.
“This “enemy of my enemy is my friend” crap hasn’t worked since Stalin.”
That’s because those who were playing it just haven’t been as good at it as the masters of years and centuries past.
I’d wager that Rudyard Kipling would know just what to do with both the unpalatable among the rebels and Colonel Qaddafi’s wretched minions.
And then when the smoke had cleared and all the nasty buggers’ corpses were laying about in stinking heaps, he’d pen some verse about it.
A big part of our problem is that we just seem to be too squeamish about using the Tools of Empire.
At Debkafile, Syria murdered 100 protesters. Shouldn’t we have a NFZ, and destroy tanks there too. How about the CHICOMMS? They like to murder Monks. I say we help the Monks.
It appears to me North Africa, and Egypt is being turned over to those who really love Muhammad, and think he did not murder, and rape. DaOne has lead the charge for this to occur. Is DaOne an agent for Allah the moon god, or Soros’s New World Order? Who, or what stands to profit from this?
This whole exercise smells to high heaven!! and Obama is the leader of the crap
Obama has rushed the U.S. into a war against a nation that was no threat to the U.S. to save and turn the country of Libya over to Islamic extremist allies of Al-Qaeda! When will the insanity of the Obama Presidency end?
Taliban, Part 2. Didn’t we see this movie before?
you need to get al the facts when reporting. one month ago, Aljazeera did aan interview with him and he said he was just helping his people get rid of the dictator and he is looking forward to a democratic Libya.
So lets ignore the history behind this guy. Thank’s for the attempted obfuscation.
HAJJA—-I’m tired of hearing about the palestinians and their homeland. You better learn some history about the word palestinians, There is no such people, culture, language,or government of palestinians.
There has never been any palestinians lands. check out ancient palestinians , and other sources.
A few weeks ago when Daffy the Despot was ranting about the rebels being Al-Qaeda, the MSM was rolling in the aisles in stitches at the ravings of the lunatic. Now we’re finding out it’s true? After reading that al-Hasadi admits to the rebels’ Al-Qaeda connections, I can only paraphrase the old punchline: who ya gonna believe, the MSM or your own lying eyes!

On “Islamic Democracy”:

What is America doing sleeping, you really have to be ignorant of facts if you think the rebels in Lybia are common people, I do not doubt they are the ones dying on the front line, but there is a puppet master here. For the un resolution to work the arab league had to approve it right, how do common people in lybia get in touch with arab leaders? Answer extremest groups are behind it backed by Iran who has strangely remained quiet about this. Wake up America and smell what Obama has brewing. P.s. how is Egypt doing with the Muslim Brotherhood gaining power, Oh well how long shall we sleep as a nation remember we dont have the luxury of two big oceans in todays world.
