Public Acceptance of New TSA Procedures Has Been Exaggerated
The public seems greatly confused by the new airport screening procedures and with good reason. However, a CBS survey was recently taken of 1,137 randomly selected people with landline or cell phones and it was concluded that:
Americans overwhelmingly approve of the use of full-body digital x-ray machines — a new technology in use at some airports in the U.S. Most, meanwhile, do not approve of racial or ethnic profiling — a practice not in place.
The sample size and selection methodology seem reasonable. However, the following questions apparently were not asked: “Have you or an immediate family member flown on a commercial airliner in the United States since November 1, 2010?” and “Do you or an immediate member of your family intend to fly on a commercial airliner in the United States in the near future? If not, have your plans been changed on account of recent changes in airport security procedures?” A breakout of the data as provided by the Yes and No respondents to these questions would have made the survey far more informative.
The report of the survey speaks of “two potentially inconvenient and invasive practices” at airports. However, the reported question asks only about the new “‘full body’ digital X-ray machines.” No question was reported about the second and certainly more invasive of the “two” techniques, presumably the “enhanced pat-downs.” If a question was asked about the latter, the results were not reported.
As to “profiling,” the question was whether it would be justified or unjustified for people of “certain racial or ethnic groups to be subject to additional security checks at airport checkpoints.” Again, questions about recent or anticipated travel by airline in the United States and cross tabulations of the responses under those categories would have made the survey report more useful. As to profiling based solely on race or ethnicity, to which the survey appears to relate, my answer would have fallen into the “not justified” category.
Had the question been about additional security checks based on perceived religion, race, ethnicity, age, and conduct which would appear to a reasonable observer trained in interpreting conduct, body language, and conversation to be “abnormal and suspicious,” my answer would have fallen into the “justified” category. Like it or not and quite independently of race and ethnicity, far more young Islamists than elderly Methodists have, during the twenty-first century, engaged in terrorist activity as encouraged by their religious leaders and teachings; those facts should be part of the mix to be considered, even though I guess it could be argued that since there have been no terrorist attacks involving airlines in recent years by elderly Methodists, TSA (Transportation Security Administration) procedures have functioned quite well.
There was another recent poll taken by Rasmussen on November 15 and 16. One of the questions asked was:
Some people say that there is a natural tension between protecting individual rights and national security. In the United States today, does our legal system worry too much about protecting individual rights, too much about protecting national security, or is the balance about right?
The results were that:
As the controversy over new airport body scanners escalates, voters feel more strongly than ever that the U.S. legal system is more protective of individual freedoms than it is of the nation’s overall security.
I would have found it impossible to provide a meaningful answer, since there is no way to know what “individual freedoms” were meant. Fourth Amendment prohibitions against highly invasive electronic and sometimes manual searches of one’s person without probable cause? “Discriminatory” enhanced security measures based on perceived religion, race, ethnicity, and suspiciously abnormal behavior as noted above or some combination of those factors? How about based on behavior comparable to that attributed to the flying imams in November of 2006?
I am far more concerned about what I consider to be violations of our freedoms specifically guaranteed by our Constitution than by notions of bureaucratic convenience and political correctness. That is the principal reason I support gun rights. I don’t own a firearm and never have; I don’t want one enough to bother with the hassle and expense involved in getting one. Doing so legally without paying high governmental fees and in less than a year is nearly impossible here in Panamá. That does not bother me very much, since I am not Panamanian and the Panamanian Constitution does not afford that right. The U.S. Constitution does, and every time one of its protections is diminished the likelihood that others will also be diminished increases. I don’t think the proper question is:
Would you rather risk being blown out of the sky than have your body scanned or your privates groped?
It strikes me that a better question would be:
Would you prefer being protected by effective and constitutionally acceptable procedures or less effectively by having the constitutional rights of all users of commercial airlines violated randomly?
It has been said in at least lukewarm defense of the new TSA procedures,
[T]here are those who say we ought to rely more on intelligence, especially human intelligence. I don’t know what they mean by that, but I’m not sure how much more could be done. By its very nature, intelligence cannot be 100 percent effective, especially where terrorists are concerned. Human intelligence, in particular, is very difficult because it generally involves some kind of penetration, and getting someone inside a terrorist organization is extremely difficult.
No procedures can be 100 percent effective where terrorists are concerned. That is true of the new TSA procedures; they are more reactive than proactive and probably won’t detect devices secreted in anal cavities, for example. Terrorists have shown themselves to be quite clever in devising new techniques. That seems an insufficient defense of the new TSA procedures and a valid argument for changing them. As to penetration of terrorist organizations, that is not something I had peviously heard suggested be done at airports or by the TSA; I understand that it is being done and hope it is being done effectively by our domestic intelligence organizations. I also hope that the information so developed is shared to a greater extent than has often been the case among those organizations and also with relevant airport security entities. As to “human intelligence” in the context of airport security, I use the term to mean use of intelligence information developed by those organizations, plus common situational awareness by airport security personnel, enhanced by training in what to look for.
And then there is this comment:
I suspect that a majority of the people who so strongly object to what TSA is doing agree with the idea that there’s a War on Terror and support the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, they don’t want their taxes raised to support the wars, and they don’t want to be personally inconvenienced in any way. But what the heck — I’m sure most of them have “support the troops” decals on their vehicles.
I agree that there is a War on Terror and think it has to be won, not only in Iraq and Afghanistan. When the government evades Fourth Amendment and other constitutional protections, we take strides toward losing that war and become our own enemy. As to spending tax money to fight wars, whether on terror now or against Japan and Germany years ago, I have heard few significant objections from conservatives and mainly complaints about inefficient utilization of resources and employment of dubious strategies. My complaints about the TSA procedures focus on their inadequacy and the constitutional concerns they raise rather than on the money spent or inconvenience they impose; mere inconveniences do not rise to the level of infringements of the Constitution.
Given a choice, the focus should be on detecting bad people to a greater extent and on detecting bad things to a lesser extent.

All we can do is continue to try and put these liberal statistical tricks into perspective. More children drown pools, which are present in far fewer households than guns, than die from accidental wounding via firearms. Suicide by firearm makes up 57%, but that means 43% are by other means, and I for one believe most of that 57% would also be by other means, if guns were not available.
We have to continue to inform ignoramuses that comparing firearm homicides with other developed countries, and not murder rates, is disingenuous.
Finally, why don’t liberals solve this problem like they do other problems (sarcasm). Why not have mandatory gun awareness classes. Bring back shooting classes. Smuggle little Timmy across state lines to buy a gun and conceal it from the parents. We don’t want little boys buying back alley guns, now do we?
Having just awakened to read this article at Huffington Post blasting the new TSA procedures as excessively intrusive, ineffective and stupid, I wondered whether I might still be asleep and having a very strange dream. After all, President Obama recently defended the procedures as inconvenient “for all of us” but necessary for our protection.
When I pinched myself and decided that I was awake and not dreaming, it occurred to me that the new TSA procedures may not only be more generally recognized for what they are than I had thought, but that they just might also be a “tipping point” in the debate about an excessively intrusive government gone crazy. Huff & Puff, hardly one of the more highly regarded conservative publications, deserves a rare tip of the hat for publishing the linked article. Perhaps there really is a
Santa Clauspoint beyond which the government can not go without generating widespread public furry. Had I planned to travel by airline to or in the United States during the coming holiday season, I would cancel. I hope that lots of people do just that.Should be a fun week, as 24 million Americans get clued in. Let’s see what the survey responses are to “How did you feel when the TSA groped your wishbone?”
I’m waiting for the parents who realize that their teenage kids will be seen electronically naked by a stranger (and those machines do have memory capability- can you honestly believe that they’d not keep visual evidence to justify a physical search? That’d be a fun one to defend in court “Well, trust us, you Honor, we saw a suspicious object, really”)
I’m also wondering what will happen when a TSA agent decides that the teen that refused to pass through has to be physically searched. “Sorry M’am, but we have to search your daughter, and there are no female agents available.” I see that going over really, really well.
You can “prove” anything you want to with statistics if you ask the right (or wrong) questions. I for one, will NOT fly anywhere, for any reason, while these stupid, unconstitutional searches are being performed.

This is totally insane. America has gone nuts and now we’re strip searching nuns, grandparents, and little kids. Last time I checked, no nuns, grandparents, or little kids ever blew up a plane. I have an 80-year-old mother who, unfortunately, has a colostomy bag attached to her. She is now terrified to fly. She’s panic-stricken that the TSA agents will pat her down and force her to either open the bag or that they will squeeze the bag and make it leak. And she refuses to disrobe in front of anybody. I can’t much blame her given that a colostomy bag is a nasty contraption and the thought of anybody forcing her to either remove it or inspect it has her nearly in tears.
So great, America, you let a known Muslim terrorist on a no-fly list on a plane in Yemen with his underwear full of explosives, a guy with a one-way ticket to the US and no luggage, and you refuse to even question him, yet you consider an 80-year-old grandmoter with a colostomy bag as public enemy number one. We won’t have to kill the terrorists anymore, they’re just going to die laughing at us.
And has anybody, ANYBODY, talked about the ground crews in some of these third-world nations? What is to stop some guy named Mohammed who is cleaning the plane in Dubai from bringing a bomb on to the plane and just leaving it there? Do we strip search all of the ground crewmembers in all of the countries that service all of these planes? These planes sometimes make numerous stops before reachning their final destinations in the United States. Are the ground crewmembers secured in ALL of these countries BEFORE the plane takes off? There are literally hundreds of places a bomb or some other weapon can be hidden on a plane. Then, some terrorists can board the plane, completely unarmed, and then retrieve the weapons that were hidden by the ground crewmembers when the plane was on the ground. Not a very sophisticated plan, but it could work. You now have armed terrorists on the plane and the TSA would look like idiots.
If a guy like me can think up a plan like this, don’t you think the terrorists can too? We are being terribly foolish in the way we protect our planes. All these strip searches will do is encourage more and more people NOT to fly. I wonder if more people now are taking trains?
Look, you don’t need a fancy plan to sneak explosives onto an airplane. Modern explosives look like modeling clay, and it would not take much to blow a hole in an airplane. Stick ‘em in a granola bar package. Put ‘em in a candy bar wrapper. Put ‘em in a sandwich, for Christ’s sake. They can peer up your ass all afternoon, and pat down your privates til your wife gets jealous. They never bother to look at anything in your bag. As I know only too well. This is all a farce, and the joke has gone on long enough.

Unless the US government can prove that these procedures are EFFECTIVE in stopping people with bombs, then I say the procedures are invasive.
The federal government can’t even stop illiterate Mexicans from crossing the southern border or find them once they are here. How does it expect to stop well-trained terrorists who know all the tricks of the trade?

As these Strip searches were performed no one talked about the out comes of these strip searches as to weather or not any contraban was found on the person while conducting said strip searches ?? I would definately love to see some Exit polling done at the other end of many travelers when they reach there destination on Thrusday morning,afternoon & evening to gather the numbers of whose for and or against allowing the TSA to continue on with there Strip searchesthe following Friday !!! There was a time when many people didn’t even feel the need to lock their doors when they went to bed at night. Now there are totally irrational people willing to blow themselves up just to kill innocent people on public transportation. As the population increases and the craziness of the public in general increases, protection measures must also increase accordingly. I have never owned a firearm, but I’m going to obtain one, to protect myself and my wife in our home against all these lunatics. That is exactly the point. You can be killed anywhere, anytime by these nuts. Fortunately, most appear to be Muslim, so it would make sense to limit the activity of those that adhere to Islam. I’m sorry, but you need to turn off the tv and get out a bit more. I’ve rarely felt unsafe in any area I’ve lived, and this includes poor student disctricts in large cities. I have neighbors who slept, WITH THEIR FRONT DOOR open, even though we’ve had a break in here and there. I’ve had my place robbed, but they did it in daylight, when I was away- most criminals don’t want the hassel of a person around. As for security- none of what the TSA is doing publicly will do jack and or s*. If you want to say ‘rights and security have to change’ then I say you don’t get a gun. Someone could steal it and use it, so best not to have it at all (actually, I say you don’t get one because you’re becoming paranoid and therefore are a hazard to your family).

Who do you think created the TSA? THis was George Bush’s doing. As was the patriot act, as was making people remove their shoes. Seems to me that if taking off your shoes at an airport ensures that noone is bringing a bomb on board in their shoes its’ a good security measure, yet now it’s the libertarians that are saying something as simple as that si going too far. The conservatives and libertarians are just as much hypocrites. You could ask the same about libertarians. If they are screaming now about 4th amendment violations why weren’t they screaming then (when the liberals were screaming about excessive violations of the 4th amendment).
The problem with these surveys is that they don’t ask everyone, just a handful of people “scientifically” selected to provide answers. I imagine that if a “random” survey (how is randomness “scientific”?)asked people if a TSO could stick his finger up one’s rectum or up a woman’s vagina, the results would be “positive” and CBS would gleefully report that Americans approved of the action. But this is not the way to fight the TSA. The TSA must be abolished, and the Israeli method adopted. But, since that’s the rational alternative, it won’t be adopted. The Feds want power, and power is not compatible with reason. It never was, and never will be.
The holidays will provide the answer to whether or not Americans are willing to be humiliated and to have their constitutional rights stomped on by government. If everyone who cares about rights just opts out of non-essential air trips, the government will get the message. Check the rules. Natural born citizenship requires that *one* of his parents be a U.S. Citizen. His mother was. End of story.
I believe that there is a second requirement stating that a person must be born in the United States. The data on this one has not been made abundant. Not to blame the press for their vetting ability however, Sarah Palin’s elementary school GPA is common knowledge.
From what I have always understood, a birth outside of the US to at least 1 US parent, also has to be registered within a short window of time with a US office. I can’t remember which, however (embassay maybe???). Otherwise, the kid is only a citizen of the country of birth.

For example, a member of a military family (or a member of a State Department family) living in Tokyo, Japan; London, England; Berlin, Germany; etc. giving birth to a child in that country IS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN and has all the privileges / responsibilities of any other U.S. citizen.
The same applies to anyone who is working as a contractor for a U.S. government agency in a foreign country.
If one is on vacation or living in a foreign country when their child is born – THEN THE CHILD LOOSES SOME OF THE BENEFITS of U.S. citizenship.

As a matter of fact, now that I’m thinking about it, all of the ruckus about Opt-Out sounds like a government-airline propaganda to encourage airline travel for the benefit of airlines. Most disturbing is the FACT that there is little, very little, emphasis on the fact that TSA searches and seizures are AGAINST THE LAW. In truth, violators of this law (4th Amendment) should not only be treated as anti-American and traitors, but should be prosecuted immediately. The TSA agent that sticks his hand up your leg is a treasonous bastard and criminal; he/she should be immediately arrested and prosecuted. That is the LAW.

Apparently, explosives can be placed in (ahem … ) body cavities, and the scanners cannot see past the skin; also, all the groping and touching and patting doesn’t get into the aforementioned body cavity (at least not yet); consequently, a terrorist hell bent on destroying an airliner can potentially do it. 3) The whole TSA thing is a CYBodyCavity for the Administration. If the Administration was going to be serious about the public’s safety, it would fire the current TSA employees and hire some bright individuals (a la Israel) to profile and to talk to the passengers before letting them into the boarding area.

As the TSA employees move from one side to the other of the security stations, does their policy manual permit them to pass without the screening? As they have that free access, it would appear to me that these TSA employees are as big a threat as we could have. They arrive at work and have minimal security applied to them, then, they are free to transit wherever they choose? That has to be an abnormal security threat in my book. I have an acquaintance who screened and did background checks on the early TSA management and staff and he has nothing good to say about the quality of the staff and the staffing process.
Then, I ask, who are the models they use to practice their screening techniques? And who certifies the TSA agents’ screening methods? Is a certificate awarded for graduating from groping classes? How often do they have to be recertified to assure that the agent meets the latest groping standards? And lastly, I ask, who was the blithering idiot who conceived of these intrusive and felonious methods?

TSA is doing its job: extending and intensifying the terrorist threat, that helps it grow and become even more important (in 2003 they only had 65,000 employees, not enough to save us all — can we know how many there are now, or is that a State Secret too?); they must terrorize us and hamper as many sectors of the economy as possible so that they can be ‘rescued’ by the Federal Govt. for our own good; DHS, the Mother of All Security, has the same job walking the narrow line between protecting the borders and keeping the predatory intruders free for self-justification, they protect the border by talking about it and putting up signs that say Keep Out – Dangerous Criminal Zone (in English, readable from the north side of the southern border).
The quote I saw, from Janet Napolitano’s neighborhood, was that the 80% of ‘the people’ where in favor of the two-pronged air-security approach sounded like the ‘official’ number of pro-ObamaCare fans (even before Congress knew what was in it). Perhaps they are all really only the 30% that somehow put all these clowns in office.

I believe the Survey was flawed. Were the people asked if they would go through the x-ray machine and put their children through on a regular basis. If it is so save do the TSA people go through the x-ray every work day? Will Obama have his children use this machine every day when returning from school? Just to demonstrate his confidence in the machine.
Another point. How was the profiling question asked? After all when a white male robs a bank the police don’t look for a person, they look for a white male. Hey, can we use the TSA and their new procedures to help protect the southern U.S. border from illegals and drug smugglers? I say we put TSA checkpoints at 10 mile intervals across the entire U.S. southern border with Mexico and anyone coming north has to either get radiated with the new cancer causing see-through imaging devices or sexually assaulted / fondled by TSA workers. The first problem I see with the survey question is the assumption that the people surveyed know what the full body scan (“full body digital x-ray”) is. It doesn’t look like what most people think of as an x-ray, which shows bone and solids, not boobs and tubes.
How about asking “Do you think that having your wife’s (daughter’s, son’s) whole body visualized with a machine which will show her breasts, pubic area, his penis and scrotum to the TSA scanners every time she/he travels is okay?”
As for the “pat down” description, as far as I can see, this is seriously not a “pat down” when they look in one’s underwear and lift women’s breasts and dislodge medical devices.

After watching the videos of some of the TSA pat downs I find it astonishing that there have been no arrests made. If a local police officer had done some of the things the TSA agents have done they would have been arrested by there fellow officers, there would have been no waiting for IAD enforcers.
However, they don’t want their taxes raised to support the wars, and they don’t want to be personally inconvenienced in any way.

I think this new airport screening procedure is too much. There’s nothing wrong with implementing security, but i think they should also consider privacy. This kind of screening will bring negative effects, this is a little bit embarrassing and traumatic especially for teenagers.

This is just theater not safety. TSA knows these intrusive methods do not work. They want to convince us they are doing something to earn their pay. None of their methods have caught a single terrorist. None. Think about that.
They are ignoring proven methods (profiling, interviews etc.) in favor of methods that will not rile the media or cause hurt feelings amid the people who want to kill us. They are spouting clear nonsense (a nun or a toddler are equally likely to kill us as a 17-40 year old Muslim man) in order for us to accept their theater designed to make us:
1. Feel better about them doing nothing to make us safer while flying.
2. Accept we are subjects of the federal government, not citizens with rights and powers of our own.

It’s far easier and cheaper to train a person to “randomly” select people for additional screening, then it is to train a person to do what the Israelis with their screening.
Remember your civics lessons from high school? They cannot do what they are doing legally. They threaten you into a pat down that would be illegal if the police did it to you for a ‘Terry stop’ and then threaten you with an $11,000 fine and jail if you try to refuse them.
They admit they probably will never catch a terrorist with their methods. It is pure theater of the absurd. It is not devices that bring down airplanes it is terrorists. Seventeen to forty year old Muslim males bring down air planes. If a person fits both of those categories pull him out of line and grill him. If he sets off any warning signals don’t let him fly.
By the rational they use for searching us at the airports they can justify searching us anytime we step out of our house, ride a bus, go to the grocery store etc and arrest us and sue us if we refuse. It is BS what they are doing there is no justification for searches like this. You cannot search a visitor to a maximum security prison like this. That person surely has a greater chance of hiding something and more motive to bring in contraband. There is no justification in searching anyone but someone who fits the profile of a terrorist. Male, Muslim, teen to middle age. It’s simple. If I can lay it out that easily so can the TSA.
It is bureaucratic overreach and arrogance. Anytime you are searching three year old kids from Seattle and nuns you are deliberately trying to not catch terrorists. You are engaging in theater trying to convince people you are not looking for terrorists.
Worse they are talking about letting the people who are trying to kill us search themselves get your head around that if you can. Horse hockey.
One of the main objectives of the global jihad is to bankrupt the West and in that endeavor the jihadists are succeeding beyond their wildest imaginations. Meanwhile, the machinations of terrorists provide more excuses and justification for increased government growth and greater intrusive government control in our lives in order to protect the homeland, and in all of this, the efficacy of multiculturalism is never questioned.
Anyway, the solution to all of this is not more government growth, which has not worked to make us safer and never will. Indeed, it never was, yet since 9/11 the federal government has doubled in size in response to the threat from Islamic terrorism. The solution is to use common sense by dumping multiculturalism and banning and reversing Muhammadan immigration and its excess baggage. Zero Muhammadans in America means zero Islamic terrorists attacks. It’s common sense!
It is ludicrous to assume that Muhammadans immigrating to America will assimilate and integrate and become contributing and productive citizens when thy have refused to do so everywhere else in the West where mass Muhammadan immigration has taken place. Yet, despite all of the obvious evidence, no one ever questions the efficacy of multiculturalism or Muhammadan immigration.

In fear and/or ignorance many are lining up to “sacrifice liberty for security” by means of unreasonable search of our “persons.”
Most people seem to have been sufficiently dumbed-down by the government schools that they can only parrot the false dichotomies being offered by those who defend this abridgment of our personal liberty. They only offer the choice between having your genitals fondled by a total stranger – whose background might not have sufficiently vetted by the TSA (pedophile hired by TSA in Boston?) or aircraft start getting blown up by terrorists. Is that really my only choice? Oh, wait, Big Sis Janet also said we have the “right” to use another form of transportation.
Two questions I have not seen addressed: 1) what effect does working next to one of these open X-ray machines for 8 hours a day have on a person’s health? And 2) what effect does fondling peoples privates – or staring at virtual strip searches – all day have on the mental capacities of those TSA workers?
Hey, folks. There has never been a bomb on a U.S.domestic air carrier in the United States. Never. Searching was instigated by Al Gores committee in response to a few non-violet hijackings of planes to Cuba in early 1970s.
Think about it. We are being searched like prisoners for something that has NEVER happened. The media, courts and government are reacting to Hollywood scenarios. That is the only place pictures of planes being blown up exist…in films. It has never happened in the U.S.

Gee, I dunno why, folks, but I’m rather inclined to suspect that, except for the terrorists who hijacked those planes and flew them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field inPennsylvania, ALL of the OTHER passengers on those flights would have LOVED TO HAVE HAD EVERYBODY ON THOSE FLIGHTS x-rayed and patted down before they boarded those flights. I don’t think that those other passengers would have whined, complained or felt the least bit molested or inconvenienced. But hey, I could be wrong, recognizing what obnoxious pains-in-the-ass New Yorkers are.
