<description>I often think of all the capable and intelligent Lebanese people I have known in the US and I think...how can this be happening ?

That Lebanon could not be stopping herself from being torn apart by these conflicting forces ? (your comments as to the running of Lebanon itself help explain)

The assassination of Rafik Hariri seemed a particularly contemptible act against a good man and, more widely, against anyone who would save Lebanon from the slide into Syrian resurgence/Nasrallah inspired hatred.

Hasan Nasrallah, of course, is only interested in using whatever political leverage he has gained within Lebanon to disrupt any normalcy and, of course, always in service to his only real acknowledged loyalty, Iran, Khomenei, Khamenei.

He has recently bragged about building up his armaments with (one would think) new provocations to Israel.
