Popping the Obama Balloon

After a year in office, the enigmatic president seems less like a messiah and more like the "balloon boy."

The adjectival palette has been much in use this last year or so in the stanchless commentary respecting Barack Obama and his meteoric rise to prominence. He is eulogized by many as America’s bel canto president, supposedly the most eloquent occupant of the Oval Office in living memory. Not only is he mellifluous; he is energetic, determined, and far-seeing. He is young and handsome. He is “smart.” He is a noble advocate of “social justice.” He is “the One.” He is “sort of god.” The fake classical columns flanking Obama during his acceptance speech at Invesco Stadium may have been a mistake but they were not an accident. An acquaintance of mine, in the midst of a discussion concerning the president’s bona fides, clinched the argument by pointing to the sky and exclaiming: “It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s Obamaman.” Obama’s own campaign has not been shy to hype the Superman comparison.

It seems there is something about this president that positively attracts laudatory tags, hagiographic titles, resonant qualifiers, and metaphors of exaltation. And yet there is little question that there is also something shifty and casuistical about a president who has violated almost every promise he made while in electoral mode and even after assuming office — except for his commitment to “fundamentally transform” America.

Practically every decision and action he has taken belies the tenor of the adjectival encomia that attach to his name, whether it is his support, tacit or explicit, of some of the world’s worst dictators; his alienation of America’s traditional allies; his forcing through Congress and the Senate of a 2,000-page health care bill that nobody has read; his ignorant (or is it very clever?) scaffolding of the Copenhagen “accord” on global warming in defiance of the undeniable facts emerging from the Climategate scandal; his prosecution of American intelligence officers; his months-long dithering on the Afghanistan “good war”; his refusal to materially encourage the Iranian revolutionaries risking their lives to overturn a corrupt and oppressive regime; his constantly receding deadlines to this same nuclearizing regime; his tepid response to Islamic terrorism, a.k.a. “man-caused” disasters; his decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in civil court, according the mastermind of 9/11 the same rights, privileges, and immunities of an ordinary citizen; his recent signing of an executive order granting INTERPOL extensive powers and protections on American soil, “making a foreign law enforcement agency exempt from American laws” and rendering American civilians and servicemen potentially vulnerable to arrest by the International Criminal Court; his order-of-magnitude multiplying of the national debt, which amounts to a war against the American dollar; his putative “reaching across the aisle,” which never even came close to happening; and of course the “transparency” he promised in the conduct of national affairs. Indeed, in this latter connection, Barack Obama may well be the most opaque president in American history, since very few of the documents and transcripts relating to his activities before he became president have been made public. And yet the paeans and accolades give little sign of abating.

Who is this man? Is he for all intents and purposes the domestic incarnation of Superman? Is he some sort of savior come to earth to rescue the nation and the planet from suffering and collapse? Is he, as many people seem to believe, a veritable messiah? Do the children really know what they are saying when they chant “Mmm, Mmm, Mmm, Barack Hussein Obama … you are number one”? Is he “the light” we are meant to walk forward in, as inaugural poet Elizabeth Alexander seems to think? The “healing factor” that Jimmy Carter has hailed? A “combination of JFK and Martin Luther King,” according to the noted political authority Stevie Wonder? That “rare politician” blessed by the New York Times? Is he the “global” visionary that his Indonesian schoolmates commemorate him for being? Could he be the “hope of the entire world” as Louis Farrakhan sees him or Michael Moore’s “best hope we’ve had in a lifetime”? Perhaps he is a “descendent of kings”?

    Bravo Mr. Solway.

The Liar in Chief is surrounded by those who support and embellish the lie. You can call it a hoax and 52 percent of the country is a victim of a hoax. Mean while there has been a great robbery taking place in that trillions of dollars have been taken from the tax payer as part of the hoax. Some people ask where’s the money going but they get no answer and somehow it’s okay with Congress, it’s okay with the Senate but they can’t tell you where the money is going. The main stream media doesn’t care where the money went or where it’s going or who it went to.
Maybe there is a larger hoax being put over on the American people and the Obama hoax is just the distraction. Someone is getting paid for something and it’s time the hoax was fully exposed and the perpetrators brought to justice.
What has been said about the global warming hoax? Follow the money. What should be said about the Obama hoax? Follow the money.
Loose the hounds and sniff the criminals out, it’s never too late.

I hope more people see the truth like you and I do.

Well, many people were had. Had by a popinjay. But they still don’t seem ready to run him out of town. That won’t happen until Obama ‘fesses up as to which TV reality show he is trying to get on. I’m thinking “The Great Race” since he’s so fond of the word.

  5. 5. Robbins Mitchell

Well, now, let’s not be too hard on the boy…I mean he’s the best President we’ve had since GW.

I’ve got another word for you Mr. Solway:

    Prolix.

  7. 7. Aγγελος

    Obama is no Christ.

    No God.

  8. 8. Yes We Did

This is just another vile racist attack on our new Leader.

In case you didn’t notice, we had an election in 2008. We won, you lost, and you will never get another chance.

The power of the racist white male oppressor is gone for good. President Obama rules this country now and He will lead us into the light of a new world of peace and justice.

You remember a guy from the seventeeth century? You must be old.

Only the professionals, mainstream or not, in the media have a sense of disillusionment. Many of us have understood what this president is all along. And please understand, Obama is not the worse guy in the world. The people who elected him are just as responsible. All the things said about him now were said during the campaign. What he represents is merely the leadership chosen by a corrupted people. A nation of so-called Liberals who are eager to join the rest of the world in what is unartfully and simply called, godlessly tripping out. They know that his lies are their lies, so they see nothing.

Don’t you people know what worshipping IS. It is becoming one with what you worship. It is conforming to that will. When anti-christ comes, it will be a movement of that spirit. It will not fall on one man’s shoulders. All Liberals are enemies of America.

  10. 10. Supreme Allied Comander

It is balloon boy, and you’ve been had.

not all of us were fooled.

…you know it doesn’t matter how many smart articulate people understand, the stupid ones will still kill you.

  11. 11. LeighB

Indeed. My take on why Obama is considered to be so ab-fab is that he has been judged by very different expectations and held to lower standards. He is a shining example of the “self-esteem generation” and has been able to convince enough people to see him as he sees himself. How long will it be before people will say in public what they say in private, that his sheer incompetence scares the cr@p out of them and encourages our enemies.

“It seems there is something about this president that positively attracts laudatory tags, hagiographic titles, resonant qualifiers, and metaphors of exaltation.”

    You can say that again!

    Very interesting article. Thanks.

I agree, superb. Maybe we will coin a new term from this presidency. My entry into that contest which pops into my mind is Bombastodeflationism.

    2. Gary Ogletree:

I suspect I’m not alone in thinking Obama is no great orator, is not all that handsome, and his supposed charisma comes from the blank screen strategy he admitted to in one of his books, fed by vague slogans. The left gave up their ancestors’ religion for the spirituality of social justice. They want a Messiah and Barry suited that need to a T. The lame stream media just went through a gab fest marking the year end all enchanted with having electing a black president. Better they should discuss the importance of merit over race when filling a job vacancy. But that would make them racists.

    great post Gary

The early use of the “Lightworker” meme’ regarding Obama bears out the thesis that his supporters, from day one, have viewed him as not even a human being, but as an “ascended adept”, a higher being sent from on high to remake the world.

This meme’, by the way, comes not from “mainstream” religion, but from the doctrines of the UFO “contactee” movement of the 1950s and 1960s, which held that the Space Brothers came to Earth in assumed human forms to “guide” us into the “enlightened state” in which we would be eligible for membership in the Galactic Federation.

(If this sounds familiar, you’re probably an old-time Trekfan. Gene Roddenberry was “fascinated” by the contactee movement early on, and was an attendee at most of the Giant Rock Flying Saucer Conventions in the 1950s.)

This is probably why no matter how badly Obama fumbles the ball (any ball) his supporters continue to fawn over him. He’s not screwing up- in their eyes, the Lightworker is incapable of error.

It’s just that the rest of us are failing to see his true glory, that’s the problem.

Needless to say, they don’t like “the rest of us” much for that.

Right-wingers, Republicans, Conservatives, Liberals have it all WRONG:

Obama is the best Republican president ever!

Haven’t you noticed his governing style is laissez faire? The country is running by itself. Can’t get more Republican than that. So why complain he’s not doing more? These people contradict themselves. Things are getting better because people are working well, spending well, investing well, all with no government help. Sounds like a Republican paradise, doesn’t it?

  19. 19. Bohemond

Your list of blunders overlooked one of the worst- his support for the failed Chavista coup attempt against Honduras.

    Spot on Mr. Solway.

  21. 21. Dolf Fenster

Mr. Solway, you should give serious consideration to the fact that this is simply terrible writing. Obama’s truly driving you insane, isn’t he?

  22. 22. No Pop Just Squish

Obama is quintessential proof that the bureaucratic axiom, “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with BS..” actually works.

Not a bird. Not a plane. Not Superman. Not a balloon boy. No, dear readers, Obama is the life support system of the liberal Democrat Party; a blivet, otherwise known as what you get when you stuff 10 pounds of bad manure into a 5 pound sock, then drop it on 100+ million voter’s heads. They all know they’ve been had.

  23. 23. Will

Anonymous, sheep like you are part of the problem. Great article David.

  24. 24. goy

David, this comprehensive takedown was a joy to read. But it doesn’t stop me from wishing that all this energy directed at criticizing BHO were instead aimed at correcting the social ills that made his empty rhetoric attractive, and made his ascendency possible in the first place.

    - Sadly — and this is inevitable — we will, sooner or later, learn that we were the credulous and willing dupes of an elaborate hoax.

Sadder still, many of us have been pointing this out for two years now.

  25. 25. john from cinncinatti

18: i agree with you 90% the other 10 is in reality.everything you say is true, SOME of the people are still going to work, and getting on with their lives in spite of the big O,and yet the government continues to want to intrude. tell me again why we need the governments help to do all those things? the leftists have more faith than even Christians. they call things as if they were facts.

  26. Prices are just starting to go up, that is just the start, inflation will get much worse, but the union thugs at G.M. won’t care because Obama paid them off big time with our tax dollars. The Founding Fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor, is there one politician willing to make that pledge today? Obama pledged there would be no back room deals, no pork in his administration when he was running for office, Reagan was called “The Great Communicator”, Lincoln “The Emancipator” now we have Obama “The Smiling Liar.”

  27. The other-worldly figure manufactured by Obama’s handlers doesn’t exist. Never did. (See: http://bereapundit.com/obama-where-art-thou )

The illusion began to melt away the moment the would-be messiah asserted — in July of 2009 — that the white Cambridge cop had “acted stupidly.” (See: http://bereapundit.com/the-day-obamas-bubble-burst ).

Count me as one who has never seen Obama as a great orator, great leader, charismatic, smart, handsome, etc. He has, however, helped me see how people will fawn over the anti-christ. Still, I will never completely understand “the masses” and their behavior.

As I see it, in November 2008 far too many people were preoccupied with voting for “What” BHO was and what they believed he stood for, rather than “WHO” BHO was and what that person in reality stood for.

Unfortunately, after one year in office, we are beginning to see for ourselves “WHO” BHO actually is, and we are now dealing with his actual beliefs and their consequences.

Voting in Ignorance carries with it its own punishment.

It’s interesting how many of us use some other name for the big O. I noticed myself not wanting to call him “the President”, or use his name, and began looking at other commenters, and sure enough, many of us prefer not to use his name or title.

Don’t know enough psychobabble to explain it, but in my case it surely relates to detesting him and everything he stands for, and being certain he doesn’t measure up to the position. Don’t like to use expletives, and his behavior is such that no insults are required – he is an insult to the position he holds. And of course, to those who voted for him.

We have all been 16 years old, and at that age we knew everything. The big O still knows everything, and we don’t have time for reality to knock a little humility into him.

    33. JIM WHITTAKER, Hemet, CA:

I’m amazed at how plausible it now seems that Obama will be out of office before 2012. I think it will happen in 2011; an Obama embattled politically and legally, battered emotionally, resigns to Joe, who quietly rides it out to a 2012 landslide for the candidate who speaks “common sense.”

  39. 39. Jim Baker

A year is an eternity in politics. None of us can possibly project what the landscape will be even in the Fall of 2010. Don’t forget that the Democrats still have $500,000,000,000.00 of the taxpayer’s stimulus money to spend in Democrat districts this year. That is over $4000 for every vote cast in the entire country in 2008. And your media doesn’t care about the corruption because, if they keep a lid on it, they will cash in with bailout money too. And all these Dems, who troll trough here on a daily basis and clutter up these threads with their drivel, are smug in the knowledge that they have finally gotten the government to play the role of Robin Hood for them. Don’t expect them to give up on a handout any time soon.

  40. 40. jens

One gets what one pays for. We now have a crafty politician, who advocated “hope and change”. Well I have hope FOR change, and indeed we have changed from a relatively stable government into an lost and befuddled Presidency, searching for the Light but probably is too self centered a politician to ever find it.

Look at his “friends” and czars who are really for the most part, radical socialists or maybe, support the fundamentals of Russia. Example is Mr. Jones, a late czar who resigned at midnight several months ago from his job.

We will get through this time in history, as we the people, learn what we DON’T WANT next time. Congress will be changed this year, and like Mister Bill, our prez of the 1990s, this lost, timid Prez will have to work with Congress instead of dictating another disaster ala “Ob Care”.

I do wish our President well as I believe the job of Commander in Chief is the most difficult job in the world, probably above his
above his ability, and he will be with us the people for three more years. JMO.

Hope all of you have a peace and happiness in this new year.

What difference is there between blind hatred out of islamic Pakistan and the stereotyped malevolence of responders to your diatribe in xian Ameristan? None whatsoever.

From a secular political viewpoint we get treated to “2 minutes of hate” from ’1984′. From a religio-political viewpoint we are nauseated by Dominionist oppressors in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’.

  42. Don’t worry folks, they’re losing their grip on reality. At Boggart Blog, my UK comedy and satire website I recently posted a piece that referred to the elegibility issue and asked why Obama spends the money rather than go to court and produce his birth cert. if it will prove his elegibility as he says it will. (Can a President be impeached for lying in his autobiography as he must have if he is elegible to serve as President?)

The reference was in a crazy post about the Dr. Who Chistmas Special and alleged Obama’s past is surrounded in mystery because really he is Dr. Who’s nemsis The Master, an evil megalomaniac who wants to control the earth and like all good time Lords capabnle of regenerating in differen bodies. No intelligent person could take it seriously but we have Obots keeping the thread going even now, insisting The One was not born in Kenya. Thing is the post never suggested he was only that many people believe the issue is where his Dear Old Dad was born.

These Obama Cult people certainly have a knack of convincing the naturally sceptical that Obama has something very big to hide.

  43. 43. Sebastian Shaw

President Obama is a carefully constructed facade, a cult of personality; however, with all cults, he will be consumed from within & without since he’s nothing but an empty Marxist suit with all of his plans being panned & problematic for his administration. The clandestine, secretive nature of Obama will ultimately show the real man to be small, angry, & bitter thing. Who is President Obama? And what does he have to hide so much? He can’t hide himself very long given he is POTUS. Eventually, even the sycophant MSM will turn on him.

  44. 44. MotherRedDog

Scott Brown for Senate in MA. This will provide us with the much needed 41st vote. Please help him out if you can. Special election is 19 Jan. Lots of people working on his campaign across the country. Let’s stop Obama’s agenda now. We need Scott Brown.

  45. 45. stuart williamson

A dazzling display of Mr. Solway’s extensive vocabulary and a great example of pompous over-writing. While I am entirely sympathetic to his view of Obama’s over-inlflation, I think he is way off the mark in his comparison with the ill-fated scam of the balloon-boy. That poor kid was the victim of other people’s conspiracy, not complicit, and the entire dismal episode was totally beyond the control of the its dim-witted perpetrators.

Obama, though he is not in charge, is definitely a key perpetrator of the greatest hoax in our political history, and is following a clearly defined strategy: to take down our capitalist economy and our two-party system and replace it with a one-party Maoist form of communism. Despite desperate efforts by his handlers and a thoroughly corrupted MSM to conceal it, his public record of racist, socialist activism has long been available to any reasoning person willing to spend a few hours of shallow research. Fredossi’s book. “The Case Against Barack Obama” was published over a year ago.

Our nation is beset by two vicious deeply dedicated forces of true-believers in the destruction of our constitution, our free-enterprise system, and our unique culture – radical, any-means-to-an-end neo-communists and radical murderously intolerant Muslims.

Likening them to “balloon boys” is seriously dumb.

    So OBAMA became our president
The American people, of all colors, voted him into office.
They thought good thoughts for him.
YET, HE DISAPPOINTED HIM SO BADLY, THEY NOW REGRET IT!

This president that we all hoped for the best for…
    * He lied a great deal and really didn’t care.
    * He started appointing fellow crooks and freaks in
    cabinet and czar positions.
    * He traveled a bit too much for a first year president.
    * He met with the enemy and apologized for “..us..”
    * He tossed the taxpayer’s monies like confetti.
    * He deliberatedly hid his past including legislative
years in Illinois. He said they lost his work???
    * He uses AF#1 like a yellow cab, shuttling friends from
Chicago and D.C. on vacation with him.
    * He has refused to back down on allowing ‘..crook..’
Kevin Jennings (embezzler & sexist), to be fired.
    * He whines that he is tired – but has done little.
    * He allowed the Dem Liberals to write the HealthCare
without one Repub. Then complains that not one
Repub voted with him on it.
Tell us, why should this man be in office now? It would
seem that he cannot tell his ‘TELEPROMPTER’ that hid
administration contains both Democrats and Republicans
(and a couple of independents… Gosh, you’d never know it

He’s just a guy who got elected after this country had endured (thanks mostly to your so called liberal “MSM” not doing their friggin jobs) 8 years of absolute incompetence and corruption. Obama fooled a lot of people and now they’re waking up, with his popularity rating taking a nose dive. Couldn’t happen to a better subject.

It couldn’t happen any quicker for me.

We “have been had” indeed. The word “Hoax” is correctly applied to him. He is wholly inadequate to deal with the tasks of his office as President. Instead of leading he has surrounded himself with acolytes who dictate his agenda, e.g. Emanuel and Holder. The President’s belated and delayed remarks following the Xmas day aircraft act of war, spoke of an “isolated extremist” when he had no knowledge that such was the case, nor had he any reason to believe such was the case. He is inviting disaster. In fact he himself, all alone, is a disaster.

If Obama is a one term president, the rest of his life will be spent explaining how he actually won and was deprived by some vast conspiricy ( probably of racists and gun owners and… I don’t know… butterfly collectors.)

If Obama is gets a second term, he will spend much of it trying to get term restrictions removed. (If he fails, see above.)

Once he is finally out of office, he will invent the office of President Emeritus and pretend there is some power and significance therein.

I suspect the final breakdown will be spectacular, and would give 50% odds on his a) leaving the country and/or ‘converting’ to Islam. 40% on his moving to LA and becoming an ‘actor’ and/or developing a drug habit. 10% on his ‘coming out’ as gay or bi or trans or… something newsworthy.

(Note I am not hoping for these things – just predicting. Again, mostly on the belief that his inner deamons will accept *anything* over obscurity.)

  61. Dante’s Script? “vacuous souls trapped in their on vicious circle of delusion?”
Hmmm… ignoring Zarkowee’s (phonetic)voluntary plea of guilty before a legally convened tribunal and sending the matter to NYC for a trial as though he was a common burglar, treating the Christmas day Nigerian terrorist as another criminal, ramming through health care legislation that is a measurable step toward the ruination of the quality of medicine, multiplying the budget deficit fourfold in less than a year, signing a budget with 8,000 “earmarks” after promising not to do so, appointing admitted communists and Mao sympathizers to the inner circle of advisors…
How are these irrefutable facts delusional? And how is objecting to these things vacuous or idiotic?

If he is anything he is a false messiah. His economics are false. His history is false. His understanding of American Exceptionalism is false. His depth of character is severely lacking. His comprehension of geopolitics is laughable. Everything about Barry Obambi appears on the surface to be wrong and when you scratch a little bit below the surface you find yourself mired in a deep and dark pit filled with excrement. And yet the lefties hold this man-child up as some sort of god to be revered, followed without question, defended without reason obeyed without question. I’m just overjoyed that I can honestly claim to be one of the 47 or 48 percent of American voters who DID NOT vote the false messiah into power.

    +1, great news!

Nicely written article. I am so much looking forward to 9/11 being exposed as the inside con job it really was. I believe Obama will bring this about, and things will get pretty interesting on both sides of the isle. Both parties are corrupted by the dark side. To all the red state, Nascar, bible thumping rednecks out there bashing Obama because he isn’t GWB, I forgive you. Soon it won;t matter anyway. What the world needs now is love, not a bunch of hateful, prejudiced jerks.

Hey, Mr Solway, you can’t say that about our historic black President……. You must be racist!

    On Obama’s Back Burners

I bet that when Barack Obama won his current job as president that he didn’t expect he would have to cut short a Hawaiian vacation by one whole day–and a full 9 days after the attempted Islamic terrorist attack on Christmas Day!

C’mon now, a prez and his family deserve a lil’ r&r too, right?

So what if Bush was raked over the media coals when he dillydallied in Crawford while Americans in the 9th Ward were doing the backstroke in the wake of Katrina because they refused to evacuate and because New Orleans Mayor Nagin insisted on Greyhounds rather than use school buses to save his people?

Obama knows he’s immune from media criticism, because he’s the Anointed One, the Obamassiah, and he did reduce Hawaiian sun-basking time by 24 hours.

Now he has to get back to work with both front and back burner pressing issues.

    Front Burner Issues:

. Obamacare still has to wend its way through Congress but it looks like a shoo-in now. The Democrat Senate and the Democrat House will surely work out their differences for their Democrat president, and they’ll do it in secret, thank you very much: http://bit.ly/7v8CAt . . .

    14. Avoid fancy words.

Avoid the elaborate, the pretentious, the coy, and the cute. Do not be tempted by a twenty-dollar word when there is a ten-center handy, ready and able.

Mr. Solway, thank you for this outstanding piece. (And thank you for your most recent book which is an exceptional, if not also a very painful read.)

Bokonon say: Mr. Solway must surrender his thesaurus immediately.

Or, perhaps, provide a cit for “prosecuted intelligence officers”–one of the several dozen charges in your piece that are false.

Ahh, who cares. Keep banging that drum. These folks need something to do while the grownups are sorting out the mess made by W and his infinite number of monkeys.
