On this week’s Poliwood, Lionel and I try and solve the mystery of The Master. Why is it that critics love it so? We’ve got a theory. For those who have yet to see the movie, watch this episode. It may save you some time and money.
Plus, Matt Atchity of Rotten Tomatoes takes a look at Looper, Hotel Transylvania and Won’t Back Down.

I subscribed to PJTV several months ago and I love. You guys have a great lineup of funny, thought-provoking, and smart contributors. Bill Whittle rocks. And Stephen Green. But I better not head down that road, there are too many PJTV folks to thank. But just let me say that I especially enjoy Alonzo. He is so good. And he’s a man. A man’s man. I really enjoy him. And Roger and Lionel are a real treasure. I never miss a Poliwood. And to Roger Simon himself, I say: I loved your RNC coverage. Some folks were teasing you about your hat, but I think you looked sharp as hell.
Long live PJTV! It is our responsibility as conservatives to support this outfit, and all other alternate media enterprises that are doing all they can to compete with the lock-step leftist/Obama ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN/MSNBC/PBS/NPR/NYT/LAT/WAPO, etc., etc., etc., Media.
Godspeed, I am a proud subscriber,
Dan.
Oh, and re the leftist-Obama press, how could I have left out the AP — a formerly respectable, objective (to the extent that that value is possible) wire service of considerable renown that has now sunk to such ideological depths that I can hardly fathom it. The AP is now the AOP: The Associated Obama Press. They are pure party-line propagandists. And that’s a fact. So sad.
How come Matt always says what the critics think of a movie, but not the what the audience think? I find the audience a much better critic of movies then the critics.
Im not interested in seeing a 4 hour movie about Scientology(ists). Thanks for the warning!
The TV show Revolution looks promising, promoting some conservative values and principles in a sympathetic light….like gun ownership rights and American patriotism, to name a couple. I hope they dont set us up for the fall, but Ive been burned too many times not to be skeptical on that score. Just thought Id mention it.
Because Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood were awesome, that’s why critics are gaga. When a guy makes a movie every five years, and they tend to be really good, you have to expect some breathlessness.
It’s not as obnoxious as the Terence Malick Effect, but close.
When the people doing a movie do not like the viewpoint character or do not convert him into somebody they can like, the production is seldom entertaining.
I’m no PTA fan but I liked ‘Magnolia’ quite a bit. I thought ‘There Will Be Blood’ was interesting in some parts and ridiculous in the rest. So I’ll pass on seeing this one and wait for the DVD.
I want to thank PJM for being here. You’re my favorite conservative venue precisely because of your arts coverage.
Other conservative sites seem to give the arts short shrift.
QUESTION: Are we watching the ‘Malick-ization’ of films by ‘serious’ American directors? The reviews I’ve read of ‘The Master’ seem to fault it for the same excesses that Malick’s ‘Tree of Life’ was faulted for last year. Incoherent screenplay, stunning visuals, method acting run amok. This seems to be the norm these days. Problem is, a Malick or a PTA might be able to get away with it for awhile, but eventually, it loses its novelty.
