PJMedia Exclusive: A Talk with Congressman Allen West
Q. You have been representing Florida’s 22nd Congressional District for nine months now. Is there anything about Congress or being a congressman that has totally shocked or surprised you?
A. What has shocked me most of all is how easily facts seem to disappear when you cross the Potomac River. It seems on Capitol Hill the goal is to distort the facts, and as a result, the truth is in short supply.
Q. You have claimed to be “the modern day Harriet Tubman” for your commitment to leading African Americans away from the “plantation” of the Democratic Party, as she led slaves from the plantation to the underground railroad. Are you making any progress?
A. The first step in making progress is building awareness — making sure the African American community knows there is a way out of poverty and despair. The same way Harriet Tubman showed a path forward, my goal is to do the same. Government dependency does not create wealth.
But it’s not a message limited by race. The route all Americans have taken to advancement and prosperity is by embracing our constitutional principles of individualism and self-determination.
Q. Is it even possible to make substantial progress in this area since most African Americans and the Democrats are glued together as political allies?
A. It is certainly a challenge. The liberal progressive policies of the modern Democrat Party, while well-intentioned, have done great damage to African American families and their economic progress over the last five decades since passage of the Civil Rights Act.
Unemployment in the African American community stands at 16.7%, food stamp enrollment is up, and nearly three-quarters of all black children do not live with their biological fathers.
The policies since the War on Poverty have been a failure. Welfare programs devised by the left to aid single mothers have instead worked perversely to incentivize more young women to have children out of wedlock.
High minimum wages advocated by labor unions — from whom Democrats receive tremendous financial support — mean employers are less apt to hire unskilled African American youths — or any youths for that matter.
For the left, “spending on education” generally means job protection and preserving benefits for school administrators and teachers unions, rather than actually improving education for students in public schools, where African American students can build a foundation for economic advancement.
Even environmental policies have hurt the economic progress of African Americans. In cities such as San Francisco, severe building restrictions drive real estate prices through the roof, making neighborhoods where they once lived unaffordable.
Q. You have already threatened to quit the Congressional Black Caucus over what you called “racially motivated rhetoric” by members aimed at the tea party, but decided to remain a member. What future behavior by Congressional Black Caucus members would cause you to say “enough is enough” and force you to quit the caucus?
A. The Congressional Black Caucus needs to have an open dialogue and more than one viewpoint. After all, it is the Congressional Black Caucus, not the Progressive Black Caucus. Today there is a voice of constitutional conservatism in the CBC, and I will do my best to make sure that is a permanent voice. My goal is for that voice to grow. I have never been a quitter, and I do not plan to be one now.
Q. Have you received any backlash from African American voters in your district (approximately 5.6% of voters) when they heard about how you are trying to lead them from away from the “plantation” of the Democratic Party?
A. Nope.
Q. Though you won in 2010 in a mid-term election, your congressional district was won by Gore (51%), Kerry (51%), and Obama (52%) in the last three presidential elections. What is your strategy for convincing the majority of Democrat-leaning voters in your district who did not show up to vote in the 2010 mid-term election but will likely show up to vote in 2012?
A. Simply telling the truth. If voters want more of the same failed economic policies we have seen in the last three years, with unemployment at 9.1%, a deficit projected to be approximately $1.5 trillion this year, a national debt that has skyrocketed to more than $14.2 trillion, hundreds of regulations being handed down by unelected czars which are strangling our small business job creators, then they should get out and vote for the Democrat candidates.
However, I believe the American people and the constituents of South Florida know our ship of state is on the wrong course. They feel America’s better days are behind us. But if they want to get this ship back on course, if they want our country’s future to be better for their children and grandchildren, they must elect constitutional conservatives who will reverse the very dangerous direction in which this country is currently being led.
Q. As you are well aware, the national Democratic Party is targeting you for defeat. How does it feel to have a huge target on your back?
A. I’m a soldier. If you want to motivate a soldier, tell him you want a fight. When you pick a fight with a soldier, we love it … and you’ll get defeated.

I would follow Allen West to Hell carrying a gas can, if need be. HE is the real deal and if ever elected president, HE would be the first real black president, not that socialist we have in the White House today.
He also tells people to stand on their own two feet, that government is NOT the answer to every problem in our lives. Striving for a good economy and more jobs will get much better results than just shoveling out more welfare to people. If this man ever ran for president, I would vote for him in a heartbeat.
Amen. But do not underestimate the DNC machine arrayed against him. Some intelligent and thoughtful people I respect in Palm Beach County, are so rabidly anti-Republican, his simple and straightforward message of self reliance will be drowned out. I expect one of the nastiest campaigns in the country to be played out here in Florida. That said, I love his pugnacious “bring it on” attitude. Lois Frankel will regret picking a fight with Allen West.
Rep. West may run for president in the future, but right now he needs all the help he can get to be re-elected to Congress. According to the second video clip HERE, he is favorably impressed with Herman Cain, although he has some doubts about Cain’s foreign policy expertise. Rep. West would make a good Secretary of State or Secretary of Defense in a Cain administration.
It is so refreshing to hear the truth coming from Washington. It is outstanding to have a real leader, a man of character and values. to be in the Congress. Compare this patriot to Debbie Waterboard-Schlitz or any other conservi-phobes. This man is a light on a hill. And the icing on the cake, he was one of the few to call out Obama for what he is, a socialist, not a patriot. God bless you Alan West.
Alan West and other members of Congress like him are
the best argument against term limits.
“throw the bums out” should be used for the real bums.
The first time I saw and heard Allen West about a year ago, my gut, which is often brighter than my head, told me that West is a rare man to be looked up to. I wrote to him at that time and asked him to run for president. He still looks better than all the other GOP candidates. Obama has seriously damaged America’s race relations. West could repair them as well as get America on its feet again.
How refreshing. Wouldn’t it be great if all politicians spoke with his intelligence and clarity? The people of S. Florida have a gem of a representative. The would be crazy to abandon him for some hack Dem.
I would also vote for this man in a heartbeat. I look forward to the year he runs for president. God be with you Allen West.
Semper Fi, Allen West !! God Keep you and all those you serve so well.
Your fellow Marines (myself a WW11 USMCWR vet) are proud to call you their brother. Amen to all the Kudos given you. God Bless the USA !!
Great article Myra! Allen tells it like it is!
I really like this guy. Character of this sort is badly needed by our nation. When he runs I will be contributing to his campaign.
I would very much like to see this man run for President. Libertyship46 said it best – “HE is the real deal and if ever elected president, HE would be the first real black president, not that socialist we have in the White House today.”
I’m a great fan of Col. West. He’s my Congressman, the first vote I’ve won in decades in that decadent district.
Myra, if you have any route to get a msg to Col. West’s troops, better than my puny email in the stacks of thousands, PLEASE have them root out the simple, clear, direct, concise and winning arguments of America’s premier Libertarian economist and philosopher, Thomas Sowell.
Start with today’s gem for the Colonels “Tubman” approach:
http://jewishworldreview.com/cols/sowell100511.php3
Sowell is over 80 years now, and the last of Hayek, Rand, Friedman, and the message is dying.
I will pass your message along to his senior staff.
No, we’re not going to let the message die.
That’s why we blog.
As a right brain, right wing, white, conservative Christian creative capitalist, I, too, would follow Allen West to Hell.
It is vitally important that we all see conservatism as a long term battle, and not simply one or two elections. Even if Col. West were not re-elected, it is absolutely critical that we, as citizens, create and shape an environment where he and his fellow conservatives can lead, influence, and make things happen. Sarah Palin takes alot of heat, and although she has chosen not to run (and I would not necessarily vote for her), she is an amazing leader who pretty much single-handedly reshaped conservative strategy, all without the bully pulpit of public office. In fact, I would argue that conservatives can rebuild America more effectively outside of govt than inside govt.
There are some astounding conservative leaders who are energetic, smart, courageous, and visionary. We absolutely must adapt to the new battlefield on which we have found ourselves. I firmly believe, as America goes, so goes the world. Support this man, Col. West, whatever the cost, wherever he is.
Well said, sir!
So you would vote for the One over Sarah Pailn?
I am just beginning to read this article and I am looking forward to it. And I thank President Obama for the opportunity. He is apparently 46 minutes into a speech and I am waiting for it to be over. Whatever he is saying I am fairly certain it doesn’t require 46+ minutes. I’ll read it later.
Can only echo the astute observations above.
West is a role model for us all. Acomplished, confident and solid, without any hint of braggadocio. Committed, determined and visionary, his clear thinking and straightforward tell-it-like-it-is style are inspiring.
He’s the guy you’d want at your side in a tough fight or facing significant business or personal challenges. He also exudes true leadership, someone you’d willingly follow into the battle of a lifetime. It’s rare to find those qualities in one person.
Reagan said, “Some people wonder all their lives if they’ve made a difference. The Marines don’t have that problem.”
I, too, look forward to voting for West for president.
One of the best, well-written, probing and inspiring interviews I’ve ever read on-line. Congratulations, Myra! Quite a coup.
I want to add my voice to the voice of the rabid racist mob above, and I want to say that Col.- Congressman Allen West is truly a great American.
This interview proves it once more.
Allen West is the kind of man who looks you straight in the eye when speaking, stays collected, has command presence, and contains a directness to his message. Trusting him is not even an issue. Finger wagging and wild promises are not on his list. I would take his advice and give him my vote.
This is the first time in more than two years of reading PJM that I have agreed not only with an entire article but also with all of the comments thus far. Voting for Colonel West as our President would be far more pleasurable than voting for any other candidate, declared or on the horizon.
Since he has apparently decided not to run next year, he would be a great choice for Secretary of Defense or Secretary of State, next step White House.
GO! Colonel West!
Thank you Myra and thank you Congressman West for your honesty, character and moral compass. In order for the Ship of State to change course and right it’s cruise, we need to work to keep leaders like Allen West in DC, and we need to remove those who do not adhere to the Constitutional principles that are required by America’s true patriots. As an Admin of ALLEN WEST REPUBLIC (FB, Twitter, Freedomworks, Patriot Action Nation, Libertylinked, etc) I am proud to say that I will work with this hero to get this Republic back from the brink.
Good political advice from West’s mentor:

Oil trade groups: Drilling deregulation could create 190,000 jobs Published: 12:04 AM 07/12/2011 | Updated: 2:34 AM 07/12/2011

Hmmmm. This is the first real negative about Colonel West that I’ve come across – Myra likes him.
Or did she think she was publishing some damning evidence?
OK PJM, this almost amounts to ‘softball questions’ for Rep West. I see NO question about action over Obama’s ineligibility for office. Obama is ‘Citizen By Statute’ at best, NOT ‘Natural Born Citizen’. Constitutionally, not eligible for office. (based on birth certificates he’s released).
I have heard in other realms, West has responded to the Obama eligibility with: ‘he wasn’t concerned, he had bigger and better things to do’, or similar.
Patrick that’s just really disturbing. Whether he’s truly eligible or not, Obama is the president, get over it. Why would West be interested in re-fighting that battle? He’s looking at the future, not the past.
You want to keep digging after the dirt on Obama go right ahead, but don’t knock someone because it’s not their priority too.
So Eric;
THIS is meaningless to you as well?
“…that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same…”
That’s from Congressional Oath of Office, and we haven’t let those like you change it, our our Constitution, YET!
West has already given up on his oath, I’m sorry to say.
