Obama’s Immigration Policy: The Audacity of Manipulation
When it’s time to use the immigration issue to manipulate Latino voters, President Obama’s audacity knows no bounds. He will say or do just about anything to fool people into supporting him.
Indeed, curiously enough for someone who has never shown the slightest interest in immigration reform throughout his public service career — who, in the first 26 months of his presidency, put it so far on the back burner that it fell off the stove — Obama suddenly can’t stop talking about the subject.
Of course, the president is only bringing up immigration now because his poll numbers with Latinos have dropped: nearly half of those who support him say they aren’t likely to vote for him next year.
So he needs a cynical ploy that is intended to give Republicans a chance to behave boorishly. By the way, that’s pretty much how Republicans tend to behave when discussing immigration. Obama sets the trap, and Republicans walk right into it. We all know this is how it works.
Even so, Obama reached new heights in the audacity department with a recent speech at the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast and Conference in Washington. In trying to portray himself as an advocate for the Latino community, Obama quoted the Bible and declared that passing immigration reform is nothing less than a “moral imperative.”
Really? So does that make Obama “immoral” for helping to kill a bipartisan immigration reform bill while he was in the Senate in 2006 and 2007 — at the behest of organized labor, which opposed any plan that included guest workers? And what does it say about Obama’s morals that he has ignored immigration reform through much of his presidency, breaking his promise to Latino voters to make it a top priority?
As long as Obama is thinking about morality, what’s the verdict on his administration’s deportation, since he took office, of nearly 1 million people — about 1,000 people per day — to convince voters that the borders are secure? Or then lying about it by pretending that his administration is kinder and gentler than its Republican predecessor? How immoral is that?
And where’s the morality in Obama, just days earlier, going down to the U.S.-Mexico border at El Paso for a photo-op, and misrepresenting a whole slew of facts?
- Obama said that, while in the Senate, he helped forge “a bipartisan coalition” to advance immigration reform. Actually, he undermined that coalition by helping to kill immigration reform with “poison pill” amendments.
- He claimed Republicans killed the DREAM Act. They didn’t. Five Senate Democrats did — Jon Tester, Max Baucus, Mark Pryor, Kay Hagan, and Ben Nelson — when they bolted from party leaders and voted “no” on cloture.
- He touted his administration’s focus on deporting “criminal aliens.” What focus? Obama himself admitted, a few seconds later, that those subject to removal include “families that are just trying to earn a living or bright, eager students or decent people with the best of intentions.”
- He declared that the United States shouldn’t be “in the business of separating families.” That is precisely the business we’re in. The Obama administration separates thousands of families every month.
Don’t misunderstand my point. I don’t fault Obama — or, for that matter, any U.S. president — for presiding over an administration that deports illegal immigrants. Those people should be deported. The laws are on the books, and they should be enforced. Besides, why have an agency like Immigration and Customs Enforcement, if we’re not going to let it deport illegal immigrants?
But why not just say so? Why go through this charade of pretending to be more progressive than you really are? Why insist, for example, that your administration is not deporting so-called DREAM Act students, young people who would have met the residency requirements under that piece of legislation if only Congress had adopted it? And why turn a discussion of such an important issue into yet another chance to bash Republicans, simply to distract Latinos from what should really trouble them: an executive branch run amok?
It’s all so offensive. First, Barack Obama turns the Latino community upside down for the sake of politics. And then, in full campaign mode, he insults their intelligence with lies and half-truths. This is how he expects to win over voters?
Guess what, Mr. President. It’s not working. Why don’t you trying telling the truth?

Mr. Ruben, the world does not revolve around illegal aliens and their concerns.
No, Paladin, it revolves around Obama (from his own point of view). The illegal aliens are potential votes for Obama but only if he can somehow get an amnesty bill passed.

Navarrette makes some good points here. He notes that Obama is not the big activist he claims to be in the immigration area, as well as noting that Obama should not be. His criticism is that Obama should not proclaim to be something he is not.
As Navarrette notes, illegal immigrants should be deported, and ICE should be allowed to do its job.
Latino’s in this country have as much to gain or lose from this countries success or failure as the rest of us. Navarrette appears to believe that Obama is attempting to use the immigration issue to manipulate Latino’s from other problems facing the country.

You are down to 63.7% and extremely divided…and will be a minority by 2041. What is immigration reform? Why do we need to reform our immigration law? Are the immigration laws now on the books insufficient to protect our country?
I think the reason for immigration reform is to grant amnesty for people living in our country illegally. What other country in the world would allow foreigners to violate their boarders and break their laws? Mexico has immigration laws that they enforce vigorously.Yet their president has the gall to lecture Arizona for wanting to enforce our laws. If Latinos voted Republican, Obama would vigorously enforce our laws.

Most boarders are established through military engagements. However, I believe we also paid for the land. As the rest of the Native American nations knew very well. As such, they made sure the Aztecs, etc., stayed “south of the border” for a millennium before the Spaniards ever got to the New World.
The Spaniards managed to take the area- briefly- because they had gunpowder, and the Apache, etc., like the Aztecs and Inca, didn’t. Even so, they couldn’t hold it long. As soon as the locals learned about guns, it was Game Over for the Spanish in the Southwest.
Which means the present trendy “claims” of groups like La Raza on the “Stolen Territories” are about as reality-based as the PLO & Co’s. “claims” on Israel. And like those delusions, mainly exist to justify aggressive behavior as a way of deflecting attention from the fundamental shortcomings of the “oppressed” group’s own society, and cultures.
Mexico needs the “Stolen Territories” the same way the Palestinians need Israel- to divert their own people’s anger at their own governments’, and overall societies, inability to get their s**t together.

Unless we secure, really secure, our southern border, there will be no compromise on immigration policy. None, zero, zip. And no president will have any credibility on this issue unless he or she actually is willing to secure that border. And if any immigrant to this country doesn’t agree with that, then they really should find another country to live in. Unless they actually like seeing their jobs lost to illegal aliens who sneak into this country on a daily basis. The security of this nation overrides all other issues. Without a secure southern border, we only invite danger into this country.

Yeah, the audacity of manipulation. California, the progressive blue state trend setting role model that wants a single payer health care system for everyone and the dream act can’t even afford to provide the legally required single payer health care to a captive client base of criminals in prison. So, risking a crime wave, the liberal wing of the Supreme Court has ordered California to reduce its prison population, since it wont raise taxes to better meet those health care requirements for criminals. Since California is broke it gets to release its criminals to fend for their own health care. Since 19 percent of the prison population or 26 thousand inmates are illegals from Mexico, that looks like a no brainer to me. Why risk a domestic gang banging crime wave when California can release 26 thousand inmates to the Feds for deportation? I’m sure those former California inmates will get better health care in federal custody pending their deportation, and surely better medical care in their home countries too. Didn’t Michael Moore tout Cuba as the health care model for California and the nation, Ruben? Or was Mikey and the Supremes just manipulating?
This is an interesting discussion. Without jumping in on any side I would like to offer the following observations.
Firstly, to La Raza, the Spanish conquered this area with the sword and gun. The endemic populations were subjected to murder torture and forced conversion. Without question some of the cultures conquered were in many ways superior to the barbaric invaders. If you would like to research what I have brought up, just research San Juan Capistrano and its projected murder of over 50,000 native Americans.
Being a citizen of Los Angeles, there are areas of town nobody goes into. I think you refer to them as liberated areas. What are they liberated from? The areas are rife with lawlessness, urban decay, graffiti, poor services, overcrowding. Where is the liberation? The people there don’t want to live there, they would rather live in better unliberated areas. They didn’t escape the hell holes of Latin America just to transfer the crap here. Its nothing to celibrate.
Lastly, given a choice of living in an area that is Latin controlled or Moslem controlled, I would opt for the Latin in a heartbeat.
Here in LA we’ve gone from an Anglo city government to a Hispanic one. We’ve gone from being a government in the black to one being in the red. My thoughts on immigration suddenly and unexpectedly came to a point today. Obama want us to be like other countries, to join the “one world”.
Today, Memorial Day, I was sitting placidly in my spa, enjoying the sunshine, warm air and blue sky of San Diego, Ruben. In that moment, my heart suddenly felt as if it were connected across time, with the spirits of the men who had fallen, at Lexington and Concord, at Valley Forge, at Gettysburg and Chancellorsville, the Ardennes, Normandy, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and all the nameless struggles in which our countryment have died, to give me my freedom and yes, my comfort, this Memorial Day. I remembered, the tears streamed down my cheeks, and I wept for the lives they never enjoyed, the children they never saw, the loved ones they never hugged again. It was a painful monent to me and it was also beautiful.
Every immigrant who has come here, even if not an heir to these men, must and needs to feel some small trace of what I felt, and must understand why they chose to face their deaths, if he seeks to reaally belong in this country. I know a lot of Hispanics, as I live in Kennett Square, PA. I know they are hardworking and respectful. I know they value the worth of a buck and will do whatever it takes to make an honest dollar. I always find myself unable to detect any clear logic or perspective in Mr. Navarrette’s articles. It’s probably because he understands that what he truly wishes for would never fly with the majority of Americans and therefore he must probe and attack the issue from a lot of oblique angles hoping to get a few “Amens” without betraying his true feelings.
The fact is, as someone observed above, that we don’t need dramatic immigration reform. We need enforcement of existing laws and regs. However, years of political pandering and government incompetence has created a major problem that is not easily remedied. What do we do with the 10-20 million people who are here illegally? And if we just give them amnesty without arranging for better enforcement, it will surely trigger the arrival of 20 million more in short order. The effect will be a steep drop in our standard of living and I know of no reason – humanitarian or otherwise – why we should accept that.
Liberal ideologies and government incompetence have created similar problems elsewhere. For example, how do we get rid 50% of government employees without massive unemployment costs and a major hit to an already reeling economy?
Yet, someone has to clean up these messes because they are not sustainable. For the landed illegal issue, I think the best idea might be a resurrection of the guest worker program. You have to register, you have to abide by all of our labor (and other) laws. You have to pay taxes like the rest of us. Your children are not automatically citizens and you don’t get to vote. Perhaps after a number of years of registration and compliance you could be fast-tracked to citizenship following the same processes that are spelled out in the current laws.
