He just used those two languages to illustrate his main point (which the author apparently missed). It is a known fact that being bi and tri-lingual makes the brain quicker and smarter. And of course, it would behoove us to offer our students Chinis qualified to teach these languages and would our students actually sign up to learn them? I think a few would, but the monetary cost would be too great for the small numbers who would. In the high school where I teach, we had to drop German and Latin due to lack of interest. And to be honest, I can just imagine if those three were offered here. None would fly ...and WHY??? Learning langages is HARD and most Americans don't want to spend time doing so. PLUS the way we go about it is totally assinine, for we Americans have always treated learning a second language as the the step-child in education. Our children do not begin learning it at 5 or 6 when their brains are ready and open for it, and it is not a continual process!Then add to this, for the most part, no literature of the language is being read, only short boring exercises, grammar and phrases needed if they travel. And to me, any language cannot be fully appreciated or remembered when it is taught like that.
