Obama’s Top Counterterror Adviser’s Inability to Think Outside the Box Bodes Disaster
“The greatest hurdle Americans need to get over in order to properly respond to the growing threat of radical Islam is purely intellectual in nature; specifically, it is epistemological, and revolves around the abstract realm of ‘knowledge.’ Before attempting to formulate a long-term strategy to counter radical Islam, Americans must first and foremost understand Islam, particularly its laws and doctrines, the same way Muslims understand it — without giving it undue Western (liberal) interpretations. This is apparently not as simple as expected: all peoples of whatever civilizations and religions tend to assume that other peoples more or less share in their worldview, which they assume is objective, including notions of right and wrong, good and bad. …. [T]he secular, Western experience has been such that people respond with violence primarily when they feel they are politically, economically, or socially oppressed. While true that many non-Western peoples may fit into this paradigm, the fact is, the ideologies of radical Islam have the intrinsic capacity to prompt Muslims to violence and intolerance vis-à-vis the ‘other,’ irrespective of grievances. … Being able to understand all this, being able to appreciate it without any conceptual or intellectual constraints is paramount for Americans to truly understand the nature of the enemy and his ultimate goals.”
Such were the words that opened my testimony to Congress. One year later, none other than President Obama’s top counterterror adviser, John Brennan, has come to personify the approach I warned against — namely, the misguided phenomenon of westernizing Islamic concepts.
A Fox News report, titled “Counterterror Adviser Defends Jihad as ‘Legitimate Tenet of Islam,’” has the details:
During a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, John Brennan described violent extremists as victims of “political, economic and social forces,” but said that those plotting attacks on the United States should not be described in “religious terms.”
In other words, despite the fact that Islamists describe all their goals in “religious terms,” Brennan sees them — you know, people like Osama bin Laden who murdered 3,000 Americans — as naught more than victims of the system. And why is that? Because Brennan believes that “political, economic and social forces” — the three I specifically stressed in my excerpt above — are the only precipitators of violence. So jihadists can openly articulate their violent bloodlust through religious terms all they want, it matters not: Brennan and his ilk have their intellectual blinders shut tight and refuse to venture outside the box.
Next, our counterterror adviser evokes the perverse logic behind the administration’s recent decision to censor words offensive to Muslims (which I closely explored in this PJM article):
Nor do we describe our enemy as “jihadists” or “Islamists” because jihad is a holy struggle, a legitimate tenet of Islam, meaning to purify oneself or one’s community, and there is nothing holy or legitimate or Islamic about murdering innocent men, women and children.
Inasmuch as he is correct in the first clause of that sentence — “jihad is a holy struggle, a legitimate tenet of Islam, meaning to purify oneself or one’s community” — he greatly errs in the latter clause, by projecting his own notions of what constitutes “holy,” “legitimate,” and “innocent” onto Islam. In Islam, such terms are often antithetical to the Judeo-Christian/Western understanding. Indeed, the institution of jihad, according to every authoritative Muslim book on Islamic jurisprudence, is nothing less than offensive warfare to spread Sharia law, a cause seen as both “legitimate” and “holy” in Islam. As for “innocence,” by simply being a non-Muslim infidel, one is already guilty in Islam. Brennan understands the definition of jihad; he just has no clue of its application. So he is left fumbling about with a square peg that simply refuses to pass through a round hole.
As someone who has always gone to the source-straight to the horses mouth-I immediately went to the Koran, as well as other Islamic texts, to understand Islamic jihad and its underlying tenets.
To wit, only in an alternative universe can one believe that the highest form of jihad does NOT mean jihad by the sword.That submitting to Allah is NOT the highest priority, and that subjugating infidels to Allah’s will is NOT the mandate of ALL Muslims.
Therefore, it is NOT the extremists who are distorting authentic Islam, but it is the taquiyya spewing Islamists and their genuflecting western counterparts who are purposefully distorting Islam.
Islam IS, Islan has ALWAYS been, first and foremost, a political doctrine, coupled with theological underpinnings. Therefore, Islam is ALL consuming, and by definition expansionist and subjugating. Islam literally means SUBMISSION.
What part of THAT is so hard for leftists to understand, unless they are on the Islamists payroll, or seek to destroy the US from within?

Hood shooter was a known radical Muslim and communicated with a known Jihadist via e-mail, yet the Army did NOTHING about it due to “political correctness.” As a result, we have about 12 or 13 dead Americans and numerous wounded. What if this same nut decided that just shooting people wasn’t good enough? What if he did the ultimate jihadist attack and became a suicide bomber in a room filled with Army troops, killing possibly dozens more?
What is puzzling about the Obama administration is that they would not think twice about firing off some Hellfire missiles from a Predator drone over Pakistan against militant jihadists, yet they refuse to even discharge a mental case like the Ft. Hood shooter before he goes on his deadly shooting spree. Seems that we have a different set of rules for Radical Muslims here in America as opposed to the ones in foreign countries. Unfortunately, this form of political correctness is going to get even more people killed. Incompetant fools like Brennan need to be sacked immediately and much more aggressive law-enforcement officials need to be hired. One man that would be ideal for Brennan’s job would be Rudy Giuliani, although he would never take the job (let alone be offered it).
The reason why the George W. Bush administration was so successful in the war on Radical Muslim Jihadists was because they were not afraid to identify the enemy by its real name. But if Obama really, honestly, thinks that if we’re nice to these people and don’t insult them, then they will stop trying to kill us, that is a fool’s premise that is not only dangerous, but will be fatal to other Americans.
And, by the way, almost two years into Obama’s “charm” offensive against Muslims and what has it gotten us? Three attempted terrorist attacks against this country with one of them being successful. We don’t even know about the ones stopped by the CIA or the FBI. Oh, and did I forget to mention that Iran is about to get a nuclear weapon and will probably share that information with Islamic terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah? I guess the Muslims really love him, don’t ya know. How’s that “Hope and Change” working out for you now?

With all respect, I think you’re wrong about what Brennan knows or doesn’t know about Jihad. Brennan knows full well that holy war means just that. His intention is to delude the American public on the subject.
Beginning with nine-eleven, hack politicians and administrators have been more worried about a vengeful and violent reaction from American citizens against innocent Muslims than they have about Muslim terrorists. Essential to their liberal fantasy of moral and intellectual superiority is the conviction that ordinary Americans are ignorant savages who cling to guns and Bibles and can’t distinguish between right and wrong or guilt and innocence.

I’m not sure Obama and Brennan really believe what they say about the motives of the jihadists. There is also the likely explanation that they doubt the ability of Americans, who cling to guns and religion in mindless fear of the future, to understand these subtle concepts. To the American left, the public is a vast lumpen proletariat unable to accept such advanced understanding of jihad without embarking on a bloody massacre of all Muslims, regardless of their good will and pacifistic motives. The word “Aryan” has a non-controversial technical meaning to anthropologists and historians, but only a complete twit would demand that we refuse to use this word in discussing white supremacist groups. He should read translations of Islamic radical publications to see that they have a meaning for “jihad” that has nothing to do with spiritual struggles.

There was an interesting reaction in the Middle East to the rise of National Socialism. The term “Antisemitismus” was officially banned in the Third Reich, because after all, Arabs were also officially semites and on the side of the Nazis to a large extent. The officially sanctioned term was “Judenhass” or “Jew hatred.” The Iranians did indeed change the name of their country to Iran, meaning land of the Aryans. This is the “news” many in the Obama administration were raised on, and it looks like these are the “problems” he is trying to fix.

Brennan was assigned as a CIA officer to the ME including Saudi Arabia for many years. He has had training in the Arabic language. For him not to understand the full implications of Jihad and Islamic doctrine indicates willful ignorance (stupidity) or purposeful deception for some reason. I don’t know his motivation, but the latter seems most likely. Perhaps he has some financial involvement in the area that is his incentive for spewing such dangerous nonsense.

Americans have always been very slow to anger. We didn’t get into WWI until Wilson got horny and needed to be laid. Roosevelt had to wait until after Pearl Harbor to declare war against the JAPANESE. The European Crusades were a result of endless Muslim military invasions that started in the 6th century. It was only after the Battle of Lepanto and The Battle of Vienna against the Muslims that Europe got any breathing space.
