Ask me what is important to Puerto Ricans and I might say statehood; to Cubans, it might be regime change. However, these are just assumptions because I don’t know. What’s important to a Mexican-American in Arizona is going to be different for a Mexican-American in North Carolina. We are not monolithic and will never be a voting bloc. Like other voters, we reward candidates who campaign in our communities, present an appealing message, and show respect and affinity for our members.

In 1984, Ronald Reagan captured 37% of the Hispanic vote and in 2004 George W. Bush garnered 44% of the Hispanic vote. He even tried his Spanish at times, which was always good for a laugh. But Republicans can’t hide a simple truth: the party has only four Latino members of Congress. Moreover, that number will decrease by one when Senator Mel Martinez retires his seat in Florida in 2010. “It is absolutely abhorrent that we do not have one Republican Hispanic member of Congress in states like California, Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada,” says Mario Lopez, director of the Hispanic Leadership Fund, which was created in 2008 to address minority recruitment and training of candidates.

Republicans need to make a concerted effort to recruit candidates that reflect a diverse party. With some help, former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio may be the Senate candidate in Florida in 2010. However, Republicans can’t escape the fact that they need to address the issue of immigration. The components of an immigration policy that is both responsible and politically effective aren’t difficult to put together. The violence currently taking place on both sides of the border is a national security issue. Rampant kidnapping, narcotics smuggling, and arms trafficking takes place on a daily basis and must be stopped.

Once the border is better secured, Republicans can address the 12 to 14 million undocumented workers in our country. Those who have committed crimes here must be sent back to their home country immediately. But individuals who have been in the country and who have been paying taxes and working hard (and perhaps have children here) should have a way to continue contributing to society. While penalties may be appropriate for illegally entering the country, there is simply no viable or politically acceptable means of conducting a mass deportation. Republicans can also address penalties for employers who hire illegal workers and institute a verification system. Recruitment and development of policy positions with appeal to Hispanics are a prerequisite for better electoral results. And a respectful and constructive approach to immigration must be part of the GOP agenda.

Republicans still have a long way to go if they hope to win back the Hispanic vote. Like General Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “Pessimism never won any battle.” The path will be difficult, but once Republicans manage to construct an effective message with effective messengers, perhaps we will no longer have to listen to mariachi music.

Why are we “reaching out” to Hispanics? Isn’t this getting a little old? Do we still go out of our way reach out to Germans, Italians, Jews, Irish or other perceived white skinned ethnic groups? Why are those Americans possessing brown skin deserving of such demeaning treatment? Are they immature children? Are they victims? Why this apparent sense of entitlement? Why do so many politically correct individuals encourage Hispanics to continue indulging is self-destructive identity politics? One would think that in 2009 these well meaning but fatuous attempts to make them “feel welcome” would irritate the Hispanic citizenry. Sergio Rodriguera Jr might also want to address the awkward challenges of widespread Hispanic anti-intellectualism and increasing illegitimacy. These problems cannot be indefinitely ignored.

I remain confused on why curtailing illegal immigration is supposedly anti-Hispanic? Don’t these Americans also pay taxes and suffer the consequences of this rampant lawbreaking? I am utterly convinced that if these illegals possessed blue eyes and blond hair—these Hispanic citizens would rightfully be outraged. They would demand that the government do a better job in controlling the border.

This is one of the best PJM articles (much more articulate than Ruben Navarette Junior) I’ve read recently. Much more important than listening to Rush Limbaugh, attracting “moderate” voters or integrating within online social networks for the GOP is to attract minority voters.

Some might argue that the left distorts the republican party as some “white man only” club, that the GOP is perfectly fine with a more diverse makeup in the party. This is true, but perception matters. GOP has much to gain if they show genuine excitement over Vietnames republicans winning in conservative pockets of the country. California Republicans (as far as I know) did next to nothing while mormons and some Latinos businesses were harassed for donating to prop 8, and made virtually no noise when it passed. Missed opporutnities.

The immigration compromise proposed by the author is perfectly serviceable, and will soften the GOP’s image in the eyes of minorities. Most illegal immigrants don’t belong to “la raza” and other assortment of activists who think we should accept everyone. Reasonable ones will admit that their own motherland will kick out illegals without a second thought. Help law abiding illegals become citizens. They should be entitled to some fundamental services, although not extrvagant welfares. Kick out all criminals.

And yes, why not drop the patronization and gimmicks? If you like some of our ethnic food and show some genuine interest in our culture, that’s enough. No mariachi bands or uttering a self serving phrase in another language(often butchered, cough cough Gray Davis). Next time you host Latinos, serve them some unagi rolls. CA republicans should reveal how their state government just raised taxes, soon to hit downtown LA, westminster, Koreatown, and other locations dominated by minority businesses. And they’ll have pay for Obama’s plans too.

you don’t have to win minorites outtright. Just imagaine what even 40% latino votes will do for you in some swing states.

Winning the hispanic vote is nonsense as far as I’m concerned. One of the things I liked about the Republican party is they didn’t seem to pander to liberal created ethnic victim groups but instead treated people as individuals and created policies that had broad appeal for everyone. Despite that, big name Republicans like McCain and Bush bent over backwards to pamper the “hispanic vote” by refusing to do anything really meaningful against illegal immigration despite it being a huge issue within the Republican party (and the country in general mind you). And what did it get the Republican party? Nada. Hispanics still overwhlemingly vote Democrat for God knows what reason. As do most minorities in general. Why is beyond me.

I guess the stereotype still persists that Republicans are all members of the KKK despite not showing any real racisl insensitivity in roughly 30-40 years. The only way to really counter those ugly stereotypes is to get more conservatives in the entertainment and news business. Both of which are the main culprits for perpetuating anti-Republican stereotypes. I think we should continue to not lower ourselves to race based politics and continue to stand for individual rights. If that doesn’t appeal to bigoted minorities then so be it. I don’t think we should bend over backwards anymore to make them happy if that results in policies which hurt our nation.

The GOP doesn’t need to “reach out” to any one. That is what is bringing its down fall. It is the Dems who are a set of disjointed constituencies who seek to promise a little something to everyone. It is the Dems who try to be a chameleon – who have become the home for single issue (or topic) people who believe they are the point of the party. Labor organizers, race warlords, public school teachers, pro choicers, global warmers, collectivists, the GBLT crowd, tree huggers and the people who believe they have a right not to be offended – all believe the Democrat party exists solely to further their personal agenda. Dems send someone to attend these group’s rallies, march in the street with them once and then forget them. The Dems have no clear core philosophy unless is that it is wrong to have a clear philosophy. The Dems “reach out” to everyone, because they have no core – they can include “ex-prostitute single mothers on crack from Albania who have seen Elvis and have been kidnapped by space aliens” as a constituency group because they have no core. No conflict of principle is possible. The only point is to get more voters.

The GOP is supposed to be a set of ideas – not a set of disjointed groups. The GOP is supposed to stand for limited government, constitutional constructionalism, individual freedom and the principal that individuals working for their own self interest creates the common good far more effectively than a central authority seeking the common good helps individuals. When Regan grew the party and won by a land slide, he did not do so by being “inclusive”. He did not seek to represent the interests of as many “groups” as possible. He helped to convince people that conservativism was right. The GOP didn’t change – more people became believers.

McCain lost precisely because he tried to be all things to all people. Republicans never win by trying to be Democrats “light” people will always choose the real thing. Clear conservatives, however, win almost every election they enter. (We haven’t had one of those for a while.)

The GOP must return to being the party of principle. If that doesn’t work – then there is no reason for the GOP to exist and conservatives will find a new home.

That’s absolutely right! It’s time to reach for AMERICANS.

“Even I don’t understand all of us. Hispanics or Latinos come from over 20 countries in Central and South America, not to mention our neighbor Mexico.”

There you go. You can’t consistently reach a melange of opinions, standings and social backgrounds. Try attending a potluck of tortillas, burritos, enchiladas, paella, feijoada, tamales, orchata, tacos, saltado, ceviche, arepas, chuchitos, frijoles, gallo pinto, ropa vieja, fiambre, you get the idea . . .

From my observation, at least in this area of Chicago, there are more Hispanic republicans then Caucasian republicans.

  8. 8. Rip Ford

Ronald Reagan won a broad coalition because he espoused a philosophy that appealed to the best in people and formed a coalition around ideas. Go back to the campaign of 1980 and see who joined Reagan and his big ideas: Regan Democrats. These were labor union members and the descendants of the ethnic wave of the early 20th century. They were the Italians, Poles, Irish, Catholics, etc. who held the same values and were uncomfortable with the America hating socialist left.
America is a great place. We believe in strong family values. We believe in life. We believe that each individual is sacred and special in the eyes of God, even if unborn. For those who believe the same things, come join us.
Let’s form our argument around ideas and ideals that appeal to the best in human nature cheerfully.
That’s how we win. We lose by offering to be Pandering Lite to group constituencies.

“Hispanics still overwhlemingly vote Democrat for God”

That is probably because most Hispanics love the welfare state. They want their goodies—and feel entitled. The Republicans cannot hope to win over these people unless they are willing to offer bribes. Unfortunately, numerous Hispanics have been enticed by leftists to perceive themselves as victims of oppression. It is their responsibility, however, to start behaving like full-grown adults instead of immature children. The GOP must immediately cease pampering them. It will only get itself into a bidding war with Democrats who will offer them even more goods and services subsidized by other taxpayers.

We must not forget that Hispanic illegitimacy rates are skyrocketing along with the prison sentences. An increasing number remain marginally to functionally illiterate. Whose fault is this? Center right Republicans truly represent a color blond society. We are the ones who care little about racial and ethnic categories. Hispanics are warmly encouraged to join our ranks. It’s entirely up to them.

  10. 10. NWMA

It’s time for people to come to terms with something. Hispanic is not a race. It is a group of people who mostly speak Spanish. Hungarian is not a race, neither is English. Get it?

John McCain is not a conservative. He just looked more like one next to the communist obama.

Get ready for the Rusholution, chips & salsa are something we can get along without just fine. You can not survive without the meal train that it gets served at as a complimntary cheap little side dish. In other words, America does not need you, you need America. Support its destruction and you will find yourselves escorted out with the door slammed in your tacos.

Well Hispanics (what a vulgar catchall) are culturally indisposed to the core principles of Conservatism. Generations of peonage, Catholicism and corruption have hollowed out their manhood. This is why we need a strong border fence. Hollow men need to stay home. We need to be very selective about who we let into this country. The only chance of immigration not swallowing up this country in socialism is generous but strict legal immigration where education and self reliance are the determining factors for allowing people into this country.

  12. 12. cfbleachers

It always seemed to me…that Hispanics would fare well by reaching out to Republicans. When people don’t know each other well, the awkward phase of “sizing up” how you will be received is a two way street.

If Hispanics want to be embraced, it may speed along the process by approaching the “other” with open arms…signaling an embrace back.

Republicans of all stripes (except those who hold the leftist broad farce stereotype)would welcome an infusion of strong principled, hard working, dedicated Americans especially from the leftist infused “victim” tent.

It’s funny but this reminds me of a friend of mine from Viet Nam who has been here quite a while and is a master hair stylist…but still speaks with a strong accent. (so did my grandfather, it’s not a sin…she learned the language as did he, but some phrases were not always in the king’s English).

We were talking about the Oscars and she said she did not want Sean Penn to win. I asked her if this was because of the subject of the film…homosexuality. I presumed that she (being from a conservative cultural background) was offended by it. She said “Oh, no…I not bothered by that…but he …um… betrayal.

I asked what she meant and she said…Sean Penn be betrayal, America…this his home, he betray

You see, in her cultural upbringing, it mattered not one whit that Sean Penn would march, scream, rage…FOR AMERICA TO LEAVE VIET NAM….what she saw when she looked at him was a man who would stand in “betrayal” of his own country. That his entire persona was not of someone who was “liberal” in his views, but someone who turns his back on his country and countrymen.

Culturally, many…if not most…other lands would not value, much less idolize such a person or such behavior.

Hispanics have a traditionally MUCH more conservative approach to such things, than they do the “liberal” or more precisely…leftist…approach. What holds them back from becoming a major part of the Republican (or, again, more precisely…anti-leftist) platform are two predominant factors.

They believe the tripe put out by the leftist propaganda in the entrenched media. They don’t know if they will be accepted with open arms…and therefore are timid and hesitant in approaching…instead of coming in with open arms themselves. If Hispanics wish to continue to be patted on the head and treated like a field hand with a benevolent master…then by all means, stay in “your place” in the tent.

If they wish to join the fight against propaganda and “permanent pickaninny” status, they can start by opening their own arms and approaching the anti-leftist teams across the nation.

I despise the notion of pandering to hyphenated Americans. My wife, who is an immigrant, feels the same way. We are not losers. We don’t need or want and would not accept special treatment. My wife’s got an accent that she will never lose, and she is ineligible to be president. Otherwise, she’s a citizen, a voter, a worker, and the same as every other American (well, better looking and smarter than most, but you get my point.) She refused to take the written test for her driver’s license in Japanese, even though that was an option in NY State.

I have nothing against Hispanic people of any ethnicity. At some point, you just have to say “grow up.” Nobody is denying you admission to college, or refusing to hire you because you are Hispanic. Why would anyone even want to be treated differently from everybody else in the US? Isn’t that an admission that you’re not as good as everyone else?

The Republicans need to drop this ‘we need to reach out to everyone’ mentality. That is the democratic mantra…hence the creation of huge social programs to cover everyone.

All the republicans need to do is be fiscally conservative…that’s it. Money talks, and the more money people have in their pockets the happier they will be. Cut government spending, cut taxes (change the tax code!!!!…people live in fear of the government/IRS) and get out of peoples lives. This makes everyone happy. Balanced budget, no deficit….there’s a novel idea.

    “Japanese”

The irony is that Asian Americans are not “real” minorities according to the politically correct establishment. Only minorities who perceive themselves as self pitying victims are legitimate. Moreover, a Japanese-American may not get into one of the better academic institutions because of the color of their skin! They are deemed too successful—and must therefore surrender their seat to a “truly disadvantaged” minority.

  16. 16. Fantom

Or we could do what the liberals/left do. That is to put in place preferences for one racial group at the expense of other racial groups. In this case we could do for whites what the left does for black/hispanics. If we could get a % of the white vote somewhere between the % of hispanics and blacks who vote for their race interest, then we would not have to “cultivate” minority racist.

  17. 17. Michael Canzano

Sergio , Reach out for America as did all the immigrants whom preceded you. Knock off the allegiance to subversive groups such as La Raza and MEChA and the ilk. Learn the language. Everyone is tired of the chimmy chammy.
Fight for rights and protest in your native countries. Quit waving those damn foreign flags and demanding rights after you violated our immigration laws and placed the Mexican Flag above our upside down American flag. Pull this stunt in Mexico, that is placing the American flag above an upside down Mexican flag and you would be executed. .
The “Illegals” are responsible for fifty percent of California’s deficit. This goes unreported on MSM. Should the GOP embace you ? No,we should deport you.

Living in a border state I can’t understand why the Republican Party wastes it’s time appealing to the Hispanics. They are taught from the cradle to vote democrat, and that will not change. I will never understand this mentality, the democrats wipe their feet on these people and they get up wash themselves off and go to the polls and vote democrat.

Ample evidence here that you should just forget people of color and women and young people and stay focused on uneducated, middle-aged white people with a chip on their shoulder. That worked great last time. Here’s hoping you do it again. Then again, you have no choice. You’re locked into it thanks to cartoons showing bullet holes in chimps and e-mails showing watermelons on the White House lawn and appointing a token black to head the RNC only to have the whitest man in America lynch him.

Yeah, you folks have a stunning political future. I suggest you all move to Texas. And we’ll put up a wall not just on the Mexican border but a full 360-degrees around the state. Sounds like fun, right? You can drill for oil and sing country songs and ride ATVs and shoot each other in the face.

    “Ah, the right life . . . ain’t no good life . . . but it’s my life.”

  20. 20. Maggie

I like your immigration policy statement. I think it is close to what some Republicans would have supported. The sticking point was “Those who have committed crimes here must be sent back to their home country immediately.” My understanding is the bill on the table did not allow law enforcement to be notified of known criminals. During the immigration debate I was frustrated with the lack of details in media coverage. I went to Senator Cornyn’s website to understand why he, a Republican, was opposing the bill. Cornyn had proposed an amendment to allow cooperation between law enforcement and the registrations of temporary workers. His amendment failed, thus he could not support the bill as it would give known criminals credentials to stay in the US.

My point here is that we need to have specific information of what differentiates Republicans and Democrats on issues and do better at communicating the differences.

Let’s offer every hispanic voter free refills at Taco Bell and a candy-filled pinata on their birthday. Gee, is anyone getting the impression that ethnic group pandering is demeaning to everyone?

Instead, let’s offer *every* American a ladder of economic opportunity to improve their circumstances. Perhaps school vouchers, safe streets, and low taxes on income and investments to allow families to build wealth.

  22. 22. David Thomson

“…and stay focused on uneducated, middle-aged white people”

Nothing could be further from the truth. The GOP needs to simply stay focused on mature and responsible adults regardless of their racial or ethnic characteristics. It really is that simple. We are not a multicultural country. Americans are assimilationist to the core. We are united on a set of beliefs that transcend all other secondary considerations.

  23. 23. deguello

#13;No ethnic pandering.Offer well reasoned conservative positions articulated by real conservatives with the cojones to speak up,and conservatives will triumph.

Why are Hispanics mad at the GOP? Is it because
the GOP champions legal immigration, rather than
    illegal immigration?

If that is the case, then the Hispanics need a serious rethink as to why illegal immigration is
    okay in their eyes.

    “”"19. one of my own:

It’s like a teenager, steeped in modern high school miseducation, found a computer somewhere and is using it.

The bigoted phrase you were searching for was “women and minorities”, the attempt to seperate white women from thier husbands, fathers, brothers and sons to achieve a leftist political victory. It’s over. Adding young people to the mix is a bit more obvious. Next time try “colored people, white women, young white people, puppies, kittens and piano hamsters eating popcorn.” Maybe you will finally isolate your target without confusion.

  27. 27. Joef

Glad to see this topic here. I once married into a large Texas Mexican family and learned a lot. These folks exhibited some of the strongest family ties and values I’ve ever seen, they started their own businesses right and left, worked hard at all kinds of jobs from menial to white collar, and the youngest members of the family are energetically pursuing college or have graduated and are working in professional positions. One is serving in Afghanistan right now, at the age of 40-something. All of this was driven by the values of the parents. BTW, some DID love mariachi music, and now so do I :-} They have sometimes voted R and sometimes D. All I can say is it seems they fit naturally into into a party that stresses strong values, aspiration, personal responsibility, patriotism,
family, small business, education, etc. I’m not really an R, but more of a 9-11 neocon, so won’t presume to tell R’s what they should do. But I see nothing wrong with learning Spanish, or not, loving Mexican food and music, or not. I do know that no one wants to be patronized. If the big issue is illegal immigration, don’t dance around the issue. Put it right out there what is happening to the emergency rooms, private property, social services, border violence, drugs, etc…all of which are negatively affecting Mexican-Americans as much or more than Anglos. I don’t believe Hispanic folks want their families destroyed by a welfare culture as has happened to Black families. Address these issues directly, better all around. I

  28. 28. Marc Malone

The reason BUsh got elected was the Hispanic vote. without it, he’da lost. He got it by being able to speak Spanish. The Pub party is overwhelmingly white and unable to speak another tongue. Don’t give me the guff that they should have to learn to speak English. It’s true, but it misses the point. All the Hispanics hear are the voices of the Lib Dems. Where are the Spanish Conservative voices? This is the problem.

  29. 29. Delia

There are GOOD and BAD people from all shades of the human melanin spectrum.

The thing that differs the GOP from the Libs is that we want the wheat…NOT the chaff and pandering to the ‘chaff’ to garner some ‘wheat’ is backasswards. To pander to any ‘color/creed/ethnicity/’ of people simply for the very fact of their color/creed/ethnicity is about as ‘racist’ as you can get. If we are going to be united as all colors of the rainbow then singling out ‘one or two’ shades is self-defeating.

We have to remain strong on core values and not go lax on them to try and be all ‘cozy’ with middle to left players. People want to pick a ‘side’ and if you waddle around in ‘middle’ territory you’re really NOT a ‘side’ at all…it’s called being ‘on the fence’.

None of us are perfect…our opinions [for the most part] are raw and honest but at least we are speaking from our hearts.

Bush did not win 44% in 2004. This is a frequently reported mistake. Best estimates on exit polls is between 34-40%. Yes, Bush did better among Hispanics in 2004, but Bush also did better among other groups as well.

I get very nervous when any politician `panders` to any group of people. That usually means giving away tax dollars or buying votes (ACORN).

How about `pandering` to Americans period!! Let the Repeublican Party go forth with a message of equality for all instead of everyone wearing their ethnicity on their sleeve. Stop with the hyphenated American already. It`s nauseating!!

Either you are an American and want to be one or you are not. There is no middle ground.

Americans want jobs, low taxes, small gevernement and to be left alone!!

I want my governemtn out of my life!!!

  32. 32. Steve P.

Why do you wingnuts believe that reaching out to ethnic groups is pandering? You must truly love losing elections.

  33. 33. LawhawkSF

My lifelong best friend and two of my sons-in-law are of Mexican descent. Another of my sons-in-law is a Cuban immigrant. With one exception, they are all Republicans, and the exception is a Reagan Democrat. None are more than one generation from their foreign heritage. All speak English fluently, and only one with a slight accent. None of them, including their parents, expected America to change for them. Quite the opposite. Massive illegal immigration and institutional mandatory multiculturalism have changed all that. In one generation, we have killed the concept of assimilation, going so far as to allow dual citizenship.

My ethnic background is German. My maternal side of the family arrived on these shores as Hessian soldiers, saw the beauty of freedom, and became supporters of the Revolution. My paternal side came to America in the great wave of the late 1890′s, fleeing what they called “Prussian tyranny.” Both sides willingly gave up their old ways and native language in exchange for freedom and a common culture.

Now those backgrounds are all merged in an extended family that loves sauerkraut and schnitzel as much as we love burritos and margaritas. When we say “we have to stick together” we mean as a family and as Americans. I will stay a Republican so long as the party sticks to traditional American ideals, and recognizes that anybody can become an American if he or she believes in honest hard work, freedom to succeed or fail with minimal government interference, the rule of law, religious freedom and the bedrock fact that we have an Anglo-American tradition of government by consent of the governed, supported by a Constitution and a republican-democracy.

If we are to bring “Hispanics” into the fold, it will only be by treating them with dignity, while expecting the same from them in regard to our American institutions. If the Republican party looks to increasing its Hispanic constituencies, it won’t succeed by pandering to them as special interest groups. We must make it clear that we don’t expect Hispanics to give up the ethnic heritage from which they come. They need only to join us in our common goals of freedom, limited government and the rule of law. Pandering is a tool of the Democrats. They have years of experience at it, they’re good at it, and Republicans (at least conservative Republicans) will never do it as well. And like it or not, we must make it clear that English is the common public language that helps to unify us rather than the use of multiple languages which divide us.

We must get the message out that if your name is Gomez, Martinez, Lopez or Fleites, and you believe in those shared American ideals, you are welcome. Join us. And if your name is Jones, Smith, Johnson or Windsor, and you believe in socialism, governmental control over your life, suppression of religion, ethnic warfare, and dependence on the government for your daily bread, there’s another party for you. They are called Democrats.

My family and I love L.A.’s Olvera Street and the German ethnic areas of my native Chicago. We all love Chinatown here in San Francisco. But we do not choose to live in Mexico City, Berlin, or Beijing. We prefer America. That’s the message Republicans must get out.

  34. 34. Gerry

As a proud first generation American-Mexican & CONSERVATIVE, I believe that Republicans need to stop treating us like we are different than any other Americans. We are not. Yes our culture is different, but our values are no different than any other immigrant group that has arrived in America. For the most part we work hard, want to educate ourselves, raise good families and be responsible with our money.

To expand more on what Joef said: “I don’t believe Hispanic folks want their families destroyed by a welfare culture as has happened to Black families”. Although that is correct, that is the path that we are headed to unless we as Hispanics change. Republicans don’t have to change their philosophy to accommodate us. We are only keeping ourselves behind if we dont adopt their philosophy and stop ignoring the Democrat party.

I also believe there is a gap that exist between so called Hispanic leaders and the people. Hispanic polical leaders have followed the route laid down by Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton and developed the mentality that somehow we are victims and that by complaining we will achieve results. I don’t believe the majority of the people feel this way. At least not yet…and hopefully never.

Poster #32 Steve P: I am one of those wingnuts and I read the polls in our local south Texas papers perhaps 5 or 6 times a year about the growing Hispanic majority. It has become a undeniable fact that our utter failure to control illegal immigration is destroying the Anglo-American white culture. But when we object we are told to shut up and sit down by people of the left who hate the white Anglo culture . I am puzzled by this position. People are clamoring and risking everything in their lives to sneak in but we are not allowed to resist. It makes me wonder what will all of those Hispanics do when they finally realize their political might? Will they wreak vengeance on the white Anglo culture ? Will they destroy what America is and make it into something they prefer? What are their intentions?
If I were to suggest that they want to make it into another Mexico , wouldn’t that be a warning that we should heed ? I don’t hear Hispanic political activist groups vowing their allegiance to America. They are vowing to destroy it for their leftist hate filled fantasies.
To me that sounds like a reason for alarm. To take seriously the warning of illegal immigrant advocates that they intend to punish us for the transgression of denying them a right that is imaginary.
I don’t know where this will end but our southern neighbor has become a threatening irritant to most of us.

  37. 37. NMSC

I can tell you the key to the Hispanic vote – entrepreneurship. Most Hispanics are business and investor minded. Many are very serious about the American dream. You don’t have to change your policies on immigration. Just tone down the rhetoric and focus on small business. It won’t take much, believe me.

What garbage! The majority of illegal aliens (many more than 12 to 14 million) are illiterate marxists who have no intention of integrating into American society nor should we care if they do. Anyone who thinks that it is “too hard” to deport every single illegal alien should remember, for example, WWII and the the taking of the South Sea islands from the Japanese. That was too hard; more than 5 thousand Americans and countless Japanese soldiers dead in just a few short days.
Those illegal aliens are sucking our social welfare systems dry. The only way that the liberals can keep the numbers palatable for the public is to conveniently ignore the cost of supporting all the “US citizen children” born to illegals and chalk that cost up to “taking care of American citizens” when they are no more US citizens than Hugo Chavez and just as dangerous to our society and well being.
The time is now to rescind citizenship to any one born in the US to illegal alien parents, fine any employer $10,000 for hiring any illegal alien, and give illegals 6 months to exit the US before beginning mass deportation. It that is “too hard” then think of what we would be doing if there were 30 million armed aliens on our border threatening to conquer America. The only difference is that they are already here and we’re paying them to take our country.

  40. 40. PHIL THE THRILL

Earth to Sergio….we don’t want the Hispanic vote, we want the American vote. Just so you don’t feel offended, we don’t want the African-American vote, either. Or, for that matter, the gay vote, the feminist vote, the “green” vote, the….anyway, you get picture, or do you?
Let me spell it out…conservatives want the AMERICAN vote. Got it?

  41. A very good article. Republicans are fooling ourselves if we think we can deport the 10-15 million illegals. It won’t happen, so we need to address the reality of the situation.

The article recommends good policy, and Republicans should get behind it.

I live in a border state (Arizona) on the front lines of this issue. We are the kidnap capital of the country because of Mexican gang warfare entering Phoenix. We have free fire zones where Hispanic gangsters, children of immigrants, shoot it out.

I advocate some sort of amnesty (with appropriate economic guarantees) in spite of all these problems. In fact, legalization would greatly reduce the crime we are facing.

Republicans who say we must “stick to our principles” and kick these folks out of the country have forgotten that our greatest modern leader, Reagan, had an amnesty.

conservative or republican? most of the illegals i would say are more tribal than marxist. all this fearmongering about the brown hordes. Hey how about the young man that was killed in Iraq and asked to be buried in his hometown and to be given a burial by the Marine Corps? it really caused an international incident cause his hometown was in Mexico. As for all the foreign flags being flown on Columbus day and my all time favorite St. Patricks day. why should the conservative Hispanic have to kiss your ass just because you came from northern Europe. as for a sense of entitlement is concerned some were here long before your ancestors, unless you are native American and then its all about location. then we have to talk about the illegal who’s government isn’t handing out anything, who has to go for it or starve, is it pioneering spirit or what. as far as criminals are concerned they have to be dealt with. in the cowboy and Indian movies i just couldn’t relate to the cowboy. who is Quannah Parker?

  44. 44. Jack

You guys are looking at hispanics like a voting block…that’s a mistake. We need a fair program for foreign jobs and we need security. Find a Republican who can lock down the borders, make a policy about handling foreign workers that includes the right numbers, and evicts the cheaters. Its pretty simple. NO one really want to find the time and money to actively hunt the cheaters down, but when we find them, they are gone. It’s that simple. Fine, have a guest worker program, I’m fine with that. But when cops come across a guy who isn’t supposed to be here, boot him out. If you want to be a part of the guest worker program, get your fingerprints taken…if you are found without fingerprints on file, you are dumped…easy. Provide an escalating penalty for people who show up here illegally.

Republicans believe in this, but they don’t make it happen…this is one of your big deals. Why can’t you just do it? Raise the quota, fine. Lots of Democrats believe in this, just pick a quota, pick a rule, and stand by it. You guys are caving to the hispanics as much as the dems are (actually more, because you are trying to coax them back). Make a stand and I’d help. This was my big issue with McCain….he completely caved.

Decide if you want to court the hispanic vote (illegal or not) or give us another choice. As a Dem, we aren’t going to…please grow a set and put a plan out there that we can get behind.

I’m waiting for a man or woman [for that matter] with a huge and I mean HUGE set of glistening brass balls to turn our country back on the right path. -And, by “right path” I mean less Big Bro pick pocketing us and telling us how to live. Gays? Sure marry but don’t teach ‘homo 101′ in schools. Deal? Religion? Don’t force it but don’t deny it either. Deal? Abortion? Sure, KILL your offspring but don’t make ME pay for it and have that blood on MY hands. Deal? Home Schooling? Let me school my child without gov. interference…you dipshit obviously haven’t been doing a ‘stellar’ job yourself eh? Guns? Let Annie have her gun and her ammo…if you don’t like guns don’t buy ‘em but just remember the criminal element of our society WILL have guns regardless and sometimes it’s a good ‘thang’ to have a neighbor who is fully loaded.

Lastly? Let’s not refuse medical treatment to anyone 65 and over…let’s NOT go there…EVER. I can’t even believe I have to write that aloud.

“Winning over Hispanics” was not a problem until Bush, McCain & Company chose to create a wedge issue out of offering amnesty to illegal aliens.

Prior to that bill, Bush got very respectable percentages of the Hispanic vote and so did McCain.

Would most Mexican Americans support amnesty? Sure! Were they clamoring for it until the amnesty bill the summer before last? I never heard about it in Texas. Essentially, the Republican-designed Amnesty bill created a no win situation for Republicans. Whatever they offered, Democrats would offer more, and their votes among union labor and African Americans (who would be hurt by the bill the most) were not going to go anywhere whatever they did.

    To Phil the Thrill:

Earth to Sergio? Earth to you! We don’t want YOUR vote or anyone like you. Have you ever heard of the big tent? Maybe a concept such as expanding the base? Inclusion vs. exclusion? Modernizing the party? And if none of those appeal to you, how about winning? Earth to Phil: the majority of Americans do not AGREE with what the Republican party campaigns for — notice, I said, campaigns for.

Get real, Phil. It is people like you who isolate Republicans from mainstream. People like you make moderates sneer at our positions. People like you present us (conservatives) as unreasonable and in general, ‘off the reservation’ (as you clearly are).

Thank you, Phil for being part of the problem and anti-solution. Hispanics, African-Americans, Gays, Woman… they/we are all “AMERICANS.” Get a clue, moron. Just like a cat and dog do not need the same care and attention, neither do any of those constituencies. The party that best represents every constituency is the one that wins, and hence, the heart of the article.

  48. 48. PHIL THE THRILL

“”our greatest modern leader, Reagan, had an amnesty.”"

With an absolute promise that it would be a one time amnesty and the borders would be enforced-let us not forget the details. But I am bothered by the concept of “the Hispanic vote”. I do not hear about the Scottish American vote, Germans from Saxony Vote, Polish, Greek or Left Handed Right Eye Dominate Norwegian vote. Why the Hispanic vote? I can tell you exactly why: Sergio Rodriguera and a large percentage of “Hispanics” have been taught for the last several generations to carry a grudge against the Yanqi and the Invasión norteamericana of Mexico -the Mexican American War.

Although Sergio Rodriguera tries to come across as involving the Hispanic in American central life what he really wants is Mexico to the Canadian border to the Mississippi River–Yanqui hacia fuera. Nice try though Sergio, you and Linda Chavez. Sorry, but a few of us Gringo Loco do in fact speak Spanish: you yourself are the racist here.

But welcome to the Balkans North American version. E pluribus unum? Sadly an idea gone, replaced by identity politics and the victim hood of Sergio Rodriguera.

#45 Delia – I think gays should be allowed civil marriages…religious marriages are up to the religions. They should get the same civil rights as non-gays.

You shouldn’t have to pay tax money for abortions, I agree.

But, I also don’t think I should have to pay taxes to give churches tax exempt status since I’m not religious. Keep it out of publicly funded places/events (like schools) and everyone can spend all of their free time at church if they choose to, I don’t care.

Home schooling – I have no opinion, but I know some adults that I wouldn’t want teaching anyone anything…I’d hate to think how much they could screw their kids up by being their sole educators…

Oh, and was I the “dipshit” in that scenario? If so I’m not quite sure why…

Guns – Well, you can have all the guns you want in my opinion. Just register them and keep track of who you sell or give them to. There is a right to arms, but no one said anything about whether or not you had to fill out forms…

Your over 65 health issue is new to me, but if you are speaking about the potential of universal health care, I’m not on board with that either. Our system has issues, but I don’t think that’s the solution.

Guns - Well, you can have all the guns you want in my opinion. Just register them and keep track of who you sell or give them to.]

We keep guns as we fear the government you wish us to register them with. In the 20th century Governments killed HUNDREDS of millions of their own UNARMED CITIZENS. Rwanda ring a bell? Ruby Ridge? You want us to register our guns with a government that did admit before Congress that their most highly trained FBI unit -Hostage Rescue- can NOT tell the difference between a man with a rifle and a women with a baby?

Remember this: Adolf Hitler and the NAZI Party took control in the most educated nation in Europe and killed tens of millions of the unarmed innocent. Yes it CAN happen here. I think I’ll trust me, not some far away government. Have some chips and salsa-I do prefer Mexican food-it is more interesting, taste great. #51 RobertG – I love the response to registering weapons about wanting to protect yourself from the government out of fear. If you are spending any energy thinking that the National Guard is about to kick your front door down then you have larger problems. And if the great Government slaughter begins in earnest, I don’t think your odds are great in stopping it. People also say that we have the right to rise up against our government and replace it if we the people chose to. But if the day ever comes that a mob of citizens march on Washington with loaded weapons, God help us all, but America won’t be the place I want to live anymore.

    to: 41. John Moore:
    ……………………………….
    Dear John,
Please humor me here. You’ve made several statements that I’m unable to process with any amount of common sense. Mind explaining?
    {see below}

    1. Republicans are fooling ourselves if we think we can deport the 10-15 million illegals.
    ………………..
    The more accurate number of Illegal Aliens in the USA is closer to 30,000 not including extended family, which would bring the figure to approx. 50,000. {bet the health care of this group would make you drop your drawers, lol}

Where did you get this idea of mass deportation?
Yelling “deportation” is the mantra perpetrated upon Americans by the Illegal Alien supporters such as La Raza, Lucac, Southern Poverty Law Center, et al. It has always been used in the attempt to crush the debate and hamper law enforcement. 287g comes to mind.

However, concerned citizens who’ve been deeply involved in solving this issue advocate drying up welfare/entitlements and workforce enforcement, which has proven to work with Illegal Aliens self deporting themselves.

    side note:
It is important for everyone to understand the American tax payer funds billions of dollars to Mexico {and most other nations} in foreign aid. It would be more beneficial for the folks to go back home and work to build, create, grow and prosper. Otherwise, Mexico is quickly becoming a wasteland and will lose 2/3 of her population.

    ………………………………..

    2. The article recommends good policy, and Republicans should get behind it.

We have free fire zones where Hispanic gangsters, children of immigrants, shoot it out.

In fact, legalization would greatly reduce the crime we are facing.
    ……………………………..
Please, John, Please explain HOW in a normal world would “legalizing” a group of people REDUCE CRIME?

What the hell am I missing? It’s as though you’re implying that we are being threatened and Illegals will not stop being violent unless and until they receive our precious citizenship? HUH???
    Well….guess all I’ve got then is… Lock n Load.

    3. MOST IMPORTANT!
    Reagan, had an amnesty.
    ………………………..
President Reagan was interviewed shortly after he left office. The MSM asked this question: “Mr. President, is there anything you regret having done during your presidency? Anything that you would change if you could do it over again?”

    Reagan thought for a few seconds and carefully stated {paraphrasing here but close}
“Yes. One thing. I regret having given an AMNESTY. That’s the one thing I would change.

Well, John, could have knocked me over with a feather! I saw that interview and never knew, until now, how powerful it would become.
    Looking forward to your response.

PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH = Rule of Law

ps: I know what being born into a legal immigrant family is all about. We were taught the value of being an American, love of our Constitution and loyalty to our Founders while maintaining our unique culture. We grew up with an exemplary work ethic. Welfare of any sort was a very dirty word. Therein lies the difference in respect for Country, countrymen and the Rule of Law.

“Speaka d’ English” as my grandfather would bellow at the Sunday table after church. We certainly obeyed, lol.

  60. 60. vivo

Millions of people came to this country illegally.

    The country allowed it.

    Now live with it.

If you don’t fix the system, by the time you deport them, millions more will trickle in, economy-permitting.

  61. 61. RobertG

[52. Jack:If you are spending any energy thinking that the National Guard is about to kick your front door down then you have larger problems]

You are either the most unaware person in America or too young to have watched the news of the gun confiscations in New Orleans in 2005.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-taU9d26wT4

National Guard? I doubt it, for the most part the type of people who join the National Guard would not do that. But it did happen by the police in New Orleans to the point of a policeman using the butt of a shot gun to an 82 year old woman’s face to take her gun. A gun confiscation that left tens of thousands of Americans helpless during the post Katrina looting, looting often committed by both local and out of state police.

So go a head and trust in government 52. Jack, but you putting your trust in men–Richard Nixon, LBJ, Janet Reno, Joesph Stain, Rod Blagojevich, the FBI agent who shot Vicky Weaver. I’ll trust me and mine including the young policeman in the family, but not in some far away government that ignores the war on the border here and a race baiter/victim such as Sergio Rodriguera. Some of the AMERICANS being robbed, raped and killed by the Mexican gangs down here (Yuma County) are indeed AMERICANS of Mexican ancestry–sorry that Mr. Sergio Rodriguera won’t addressed their plight.

John McCain and President Bush both came here and told us our plight was sad but the economic benefits of illegals was worth a few dead locals. I’ll trust in me and mine. Yes 52. Jack if you had to put up with what we do you would too.

  62. 62. mhr

Al Gore once addressed a group of Mexican-American professionals in the presence of a mariachi band and mouthed a greeting in Spanish that was unintelligible. Made no difference- the doctors and lawyers and business men were in the presence of power. I’m afraid Sergio is right- being a Democrat is a cultural artifact for Mexican-Americans as it is for blacks, the other main constituency of what liberals call “people of color.” As long as Hispanics view themselves as members of the proletariat and are content with being courted by leftist politicians who promise them “goodies,” they will forget what liberals have in fact given them: lousy gang-infested schools and neighborhoods, many of them which wasted lives for years with dysfunctional “bilingual” classes where illiterate teaching assistants did the “teaching” because the teacher was unilingual, unionized teaching staffs who dress like beach bums and who want nothing to do with programs that attempt to evauluate their efficiency, Democrat mayors and the national Democrat party which promises unions that nothing will change- the truth is that there is no hope for change for at least four years. People get the government they deserve.

  63. 63. Jack

#61 RobertG – And what happened? The government was sued and they lost and have to return the guns and make it right. What was the other option…gun play with the cops who were trying to take the guns away from the people? Foolish.

    Jack

  64. 64. Marc Malone

#50 Jack – The reason churches are tax-exempt is that many other nations have simply taxed a religion out of existence. Charities are also tax-exempt, but unlike churches, they are allowed a political voice.

As for home-schooling, it has the marvelous side-effect of forcing the parent to learn in order to stay ahead of the child and be able to teach him. Those to whom you refer as people you would not want to have doing the home-schooling are actually the ones you want to have do it.

  65. 65. Marc Malone

#63 Jack – Gun play with cops is foolish? Let me ‘splain something to you. If every citizen with a gun resisted every time someone made an effort to confiscate the guns, they would never try it again. Many citizen patriots would die, as would many cops, and their blood would water the Tree of Liberty.

Freedom is more important than life. Some things are worth dying for. It is the weak, spiritless man, who clings so desperately to life, who becomes a slave. The Leftist mantra of, “It’s just not worth dying for.”, is simply an attempt to disarm you of your spirit. Shackles find only willing wrists. When they try to take your guns, they’re trying to take your freedom. It’s as simple as that.

  66. 66. Jack

#64/65 Marc Malone – I was countering her point that she didn’t want to have to pay tax money to support abortions. I was saying I didn’t want to pay tax money to support churches. I was drawing a parallel, not questioning it. Lots of things I pay taxes for I don’t want to, but that’s just how it works.

On the issue of home schooling for example, I pay taxes for Education and I have no kids, if everyone did home schooling I’d be happy to get my tax money back. But, my concern about home schooling isn’t the good parents, its the bad ones. If, as she asserted, parents could opt out of having their kids go to school, some parents would do so and NOT home school their kids. They would ignore them, make them work around the house, who knows what.

Back on the gun issue, I don’t own a gun for anyone to take, so I guess I’ll get to avoid the hail of gunfire from the police. But, if people did start getting into shooting battles with the police, I assure you the result would be much firmer gun laws, and much more angry cops. I don’t think it’s too much to expect them to obey the laws, and you as well (which INCLUDES not waving guns at cops and following their lawful orders…and yes, I said lawful, just for you!!).

    Jack

  67. 67. RobertG

Some good people need to do a little more research on the start of the American Revolution less the PC spin on it. The fighting at Concord/Lexington had very little to do with Taxation and a whole lot to do with the Patriots resistance to King George’s attempt to confiscate their arms. Those small farmers, merchants and tradesmen well understood the difference between a Free citizen-Armed and a subject of tyranny-unarmed.

[[About then, Pitcairn yelled, "Disperse, ye rebels, disperse,"
In April 1775, General Gage, the military governor of Massachusetts sent out a body of troops to take possession of military stores at Concord, a short distance from Boston. At Lexington, a handful of "embattled farmers," who had been tipped off by Paul Revere, barred the way. The "rebels" were ordered to disperse. They stood their ground; and a shot was heard 'round the world]]

Those “embattled farmers” understood what it meant to be men-a trait we are losing in this age of the nanny state “hold me I am too much of a sissy to run my own life”.

The American Revolution continues; the weakling, the coward and the sunshine patriots will lose no matter who wins-they always do.

  68. 68. Linguist

I’m sorry, when did they change the definition of the word, “illegal”?

Sorry, but feijoada ís a Brazilian, not Hispanic food. You´ll find it in several Portuguese countries, but not on Hispanic America.
