<description>1. latin countrys that have tried democracy often end up treated like dirt by the usa. columbia, just the latest example.
2. cuba and democracy is groovy and all, but the alba alliance is not a problem just because of the spread of communism. and that the usa has not recognized and respected emerging democracies in latin america, but because of the JFK gift that keeps on giving. foreign presence in the americas, like iran, rep of korea and china. wanna get worried, google monkey point nicragua iran.
it is pointless to advocate latin democracy and then treat them like dirt. i live in central america. i was in nicaragua today. myopia abounds in the usa in this regard. you might ask yourself how a thug like ortega can sell such stupid ideas to a relatively well educated not 3rd world country. pre JFK latin america, was not generally open to communism. what happened?

<description>I would recommend they adopt the Chinese model for one reason: I believe the Chinese model is unsustainable, and will eventually result in the evolution of that country, into a state where individual liberties are expected and demanded by the next generation, and provided by a government with clearly no choice in the matter.

It will still be a long time coming, but I believe it is inevitable, so long as we continue to bombard them with examples of Western values, and the clear benefits of a truly open society.

Reagan won the cold war by pitting a free economy against a managed economy (and it looks as though that war might be fought again -- Putin has apparently not learned that lesson) -- that same strategy will work against China (modified to match differing details).

It looks as though it may work against Viet Nam. It will work against Cuba. It will work better, if we drop the trade embargoes (as we did with Viet Nam).

And, eventually, it will work against North Korea.

Ideally, each of these regimes will drop the repression, and find their way to freedom; but if they have to be kicked, dragging and spitting, by their own enlightened citizenry, so be it.

Once let in the door, economic, and individual freedom, will not be denied.
