Newsweek’s Embarrassing Homage to Obama

The magazine's fawning interview with the president is a disgrace, even by mainstream media standards.

As I write this British soldiers are being killed on a daily basis in Afghanistan in an alarming spike in the power of the Taliban. All manner of terror organizations are regrouping and Pakistan is on the brink of becoming another ninth-century center for mullah mania. So in this context Newsweek says that the president has taken on the automobile industry, the financial sector, and terrorism — in the magazine’s words, “he is the action.”

Meacham says he is delighted that the president remembered something he had written, although he acknowledges that White House staff had briefed him on a Meacham piece moments before the interview. The journalist muses, “I knew he’d remember, or well, he may be faking it with everybody else, but I bet he really did like that piece.” Omigosh! Is he meeting a supermodel on whom he has a midlife crush or what? We even learn about “his voice rising ever so slightly, his head tilting back ever so subtly to a commanding angle.” And we also learn that the president is “Spock with global sex appeal.” Later on Meacham reports that the president gives him a Spock salute. Cute and human, but with the world in turmoil I prefer something of more, well, substance.

At this point I would like to go back in time to the moment when Rummy fans were legion and adored Don Rumsfeld’s every quip, even discussing on blogs his choice of necktie. Midge Decter was pilloried around the world in the liberal press for her book about the secretary of defense, perceived as a protracted love letter. As we watch the Israelis endure thousands of rocket attacks and Muslim countries continuing to move backwards in time, many lament the absence of a Rumsfeld, whose patriotism was blunt and who “was the action.” All across the world his “New Europe” and “Old Europe” observations are legendary; they have now become part of the regular discourse in Britain and Europe — even sports and film writers refer to events in their milieu with those expressions. It will be interesting to see whether the Jon Meacham love letter to Obama will be viewed in coming years as a damp squib.

Back to Obamaweek:

Rumsfeld was ridiculed for saying the American people have a “good center of gravity.” In the Meacham interview President Obama says, “The American people … not only have a toleration but also a hunger for explanation and complexity.” He is absolutely right and one can only hope he is a “man of action” on that score: Americans need explanations for the worsening job scene, an escalating crime rate, and rampant homelessness in white- and blue-collar regions.

It is notable that President Obama says we must talk to our enemies and hopes the “Islamic Republic of Iran” will “retain its Islamic character” and will be a “member in good standing of the international community,” adding that “we are going to reach out to them.” This interview took place before the June 12 elections and before the valiant people’s demonstrations in the Islamic Republic, a drama that seemed to generate a remarkable silence from the White House. The events in Iran in June ought to have resulted in a revolution with inspiring rhetoric from the United States, but Obama says in the magazine that the American administration should merely encourage Ahmadinejad to “shift off a pattern over the past thirty years that hasn’t produced results in the region.” He adds that he will endeavor to make clear to Israel that these approaches are “superior to some of the other alternatives.”

That’s what Neville Chamberlain said. “Peace in our time.”

Heaven help us.

    ‘Omama on Obama’ hey perhaps this buffoon hasn’t heard the saying ‘Self praise is no recommendation’. Narcissism is a nasty mental illness and Obambi is clearly a sufferer. What the MSM has is hard to explain I have never seen such craven fawning to a President ever before and coupled with a vicious nastiness to people like Palin it is beyond moonbatedness it is a serious problem for the sanity of the USA.

  2. 2. Emma

    Well put, Realist. And it IS craven fawning. If it were actual admiration, they’d be more specific.

  3. 3. UsaBruce

    I blame the media for this Presidency. They are the main reason he was able to get elected. They blatantly failed to vet, lied, and covered up for him while exaggerating his intelligence and competence. Knowing full well, and hiding from the American people, the extent of his radicalism. Indeed, sharing his beliefs and his disdain for our country. At the same time waging a campaign of personal destruction against anyone who posed a threat to THEIR chosen candidate. I consider them literal traitors to their country, and the Constitution. I can only hope that in the economic and social disintegration that will grievously affect millions of good Americans, they too lose their security, wealth, and standing. Actually the old time practice of running people out of town on a rail would be the truest form of justice. They are scum.

  4. A fan club of needs to have its own magazine. I’m not a fan so I’m not attracted to the magazine; but if I wanted to read a speech or epistle of glorious Obama, it’s good to know there’s a reliable source in Newsweek.

  5. 5. Alexandra

    Any magazine that would publish that nauseating tripe about Obama making a better Pope for American Catholics than Pope Benedict has definitely lost its moral compass to say nothing of its journalistic integrity.

  6. 6. Tony R

    I think I’m going to be sick.

    Obama Worship, just like Palin Hatred, is definitely an illness and speaks volumes about the mental health of those who follow both of these new “religions”. He is loved without having achieved anything and she is dispised without having harmed anyone.

    Goodbye objectivity and reason…it was nice knowing ya!

  7. 7. Thomas L......

    The president, apparently couldn’t care less if the USA maintains its Judeo-Christian character and would likely argue whether it’s even a good thing or not but, SURPRISE, is pumped for Iran to maintain its “Islamic character”. The new leader recognizes “The Supreme Leader”. Isn’t that precious?

  8. 8. vivo

    CG “It should be noted that I am not a rabid Obama-hater”

    Your piece contradicts your own words.

    Putting the President in a positive light is not unusual. There have been thousands of articles like this one praising all kinds of Presidents. I don’t remember anyone complaining about them throughout the years.

  9. “Spock with global sex appeal.”?

    Vulcans are logical humanoids without emotion. I *wish* 0bama was a Vulcan.

  10. 10. Jack Olson

    In 2008 Newsweek dropped its guaranteed circulation rate for advertisers from 3.1 million to 2.6 million and industry experts predict it will fall below 2 million in 2009. Yes, Alexandra, Newsweek publishes nauseating tripe but don’t worry. At the rate they’re going, pretty soon they’re not going to be publishing anything at all.

  11. 11. Sebastian Shaw

    According to Newsweek’s executive editor, President Obama is just like God; therefore, the fawning from the magazine is no surprise. Newsweek is going down in flames due to their bias. I expect many Newsweek editors & writers to suddenly appear in the Obama Administration when the magazine gets canceled.

    Bleh.

    Does this sound like Obamamessiah?

    “• Feels grandiose and self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents to the point of lying, demands to be recognised as superior without commensurate achievements);
    • Is obsessed with fantasies of unlimited success, fame, fearsome power or omnipotence, unequalled brilliance (the cerebral narcissist), bodily beauty or sexual performance (the somatic narcissist), or ideal, everlasting, all-conquering love or passion;
    • Firmly convinced that he or she is unique and, being special, can only be understood by, should only be treated by, or associate with, other special or unique, or high-status people (or institutions);
    • Requires excessive admiration, adulation, attention and affirmation – or, failing that, wishes to be feared and to be notorious (Narcissistic Supply);
    • Feels entitled. Expects unreasonable or special and favourable priority treatment. Demands automatic and full compliance with his or her expectations;
    • Is “interpersonally exploitative”, i.e., uses others to achieve his or her own ends;
    • Devoid of empathy. Is unable or unwilling to identify with or acknowledge the feelings and needs of others;
    • Constantly envious of others or believes that they feel the same about him or her;
    • Arrogant, haughty behaviours or attitudes coupled with rage when frustrated, contradicted, or confronted.”

    NPD, anyone?

  13. You know who I blame for this presidency? The people who voted for him. It’s how elections work in a free country. The person with the best ideas generally wins, unless the Supreme Court gets involved. Those with NO ideas or BAD ideas get relegated to an irrelevant minority status where they are powerless, except for sitting and grumbling and fomenting hatred in their little hate blogs.

    4. Patrick of Atlantis writes:

    “A fan club of needs to have its own magazine. I’m not a fan so I’m not attracted to the magazine..”

    Maybe he (Obama) will begin bleaching his skin, wearing eccentric clothes, dangling his kids form the balcony, and acting generally weirder than he already has; then the real cult of celebrity can begin.

    Someone observed in a thread here on PJM that one of the disgusting aspects of his presidency is that we will be stuck with him for the next four decades as the ubiquitous assemblage of “former presidents” gathers. If you thought Bill Clinton was annoying, you should wait til you see this narcissistic out-of-office fool strut around.

    Fortunately, I will be engaged in my dirt nap and not have to endure it.

  15. 15. NCBob

    I, long ago, developed the perfect response to Newsweek’s flaming worthlessness; I don’t buy it, I don’t read it and, even at the dentist’s office, I won’t even touch it.
    My long held belief is that any organization that would allow Eleanor Clift to publically admit/brag that she worked for it couldn’t possibly be anything but an anti-American propaganda tool.

  16. 16. The Wizard

    What is with Newsweek? Please, I have Obama fatigue. The man is nothing but a hubris, racist, self-promoting liar and fraud.

    He is an embarrassment to the United States and is rapidly destroying this great country with his pernicious policies and his miscreant minions running the administration.

    WE WILL NOT SURVIVE FOUR YEARS OF THE OBAMANTION!!!!

    Why all the references to Rumsfeld – (the egotistical know-it-all)? IMHO his war strategy gave us Barack. Bush just couldn’t see it.

  19. 19. Yuval Brandstetter MD

    For some reason most of you writers refuse to comment on one salient feature of the Barack-Hussein phenomenon. The Islamic face. Obama is acting in a manner appropriate for a Islamic disciple, bowing to his superiors, (the Saudi princes) and denigarating his inferiors, the Jews. His respect for islamic religious and political authority is absolute, wheras his respect for Jewish authority is non-existent. make the case and you bring his lordship down.

    In my dreams I imagine a Newsweek reporter ending his interview with the President something like this (with a hat-tip to Columbo):

    Reporter: “Oh, by the way, Mr. President, one thing just keeps bothering me…WHY are you continuing to fight SO HARD to release your long-form birth certificate???”

    Obama: “Uh…why, I..uhh…”

    Reporter: “Ah! Gotcha!…just messin’ with ya!”

    Obama: “Ha!…yeah, good one!” (Shudder)

    Keep it up, Newsweak. I’m adding you to my list of boycotts.

    Tea Parties in front of Newsweak! Flood Newsweak with your emails, complaining about their lack of journalistic integrity – overload their servers. Send paper letters and overload their mailroom.

    These “men” in the media who experience tingles up their legs and who actually write, for the world to see, about how thrilled they are that Obama read something of theirs… these are thoughts that should never leave the realm of the brain, people! Keep it to yourselves. I have to wonder if their little internal mechanism that tells them “this is a secret thought, don’t express it outside of the secret thought room” is broken. I am a lot more sickened by their slobbering response than I am by Obama. Any level headed person should be scratching their heads upon reading this tripe and saying “What the hell is wrong with this guy?”

    P.S. Yes, I spelled Newsweak thusly on purpose.

    His big ‘accomplishment’ in life?

    He’s half black.

    Yay.

  25. 25. Saltherring

    I also agree with #3, but will also extend blame to ignorant and foolish voters who allowed the corrupt/biased legacy media to influence their voting decisions. The truth regarding the fraud named Obama was out there for anyone who bothered to look. Claims of ignorance therefore do not wash.

  26. 26. Meryl

    It’s been quite awhile….in earlier years I subscribed to both Newsweek and TIME….and stopped both of them at least 10 years ago.

    I would imagine that somewhere in the Cut and Twist energy bill there are subsidies for state run media, to be sure they can continue to get the word out about right thinking. So I suppose that Newsweek and TIME will actually be around forever.

  27. 27. Lucy

    If God didn’t exist, it would be necessary to invent him, Voltaire said.

    And here we have it. For socialists like Jon Meacham there was no higher power but the need for God is hard-wired into humans. Obama fits their socialist template of what they require in a god. Obama also fits Obama’s template so everything is in perfect harmony. This is their invention and they are heavily invested in it.

    Unfortunately, this “god” is human and humans make mistakes. Luckily, this “god” has the media on his side to cover for him or explain the inconsistencies to the infidels while they’re not slavering in awe to see the world bend to his will.

  28. 28. Obambi on the mound

    Soon,very soon, they’re gonna have to run out of space for fawning reporters under Obama’s desk. I heard Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews are getting cramped.

    The print media as well as many of the television broadcasters have always been liberal, but now they have thrown out all pretenses that they are objective. For this reason I do not read newsprint, or magazines and just turned off my satellite receiver and am sending it back, I guess I’ll watch some old VHS tapes and DVDs but no more media as it is now all krap. This way I do not have to see or hear this clown on anything at almost all the time.

  32. 32. Aleena

    I agreed with Steve. Magazines and newsprint are so biased that I have not read them for years. I still get cable, but I am becomming more and more upset by its content.

    The irrational bias of magazines like Newsweek are creepy. They no longer see President Obama as a real person. He has become larger than life and supposedly able to do things that ordinary people cannot. Of course, all of this is based on wishful thinking not reality. When reality hits this country, these people will probably still be clueless, but our country and all of us will be hurt.

  33. 33. Obambi on the mound

    I think for a lot of the media (and hard left folk) there is this thought deep in their psyche- THEY CAN’T BE WRONG. I don’t mean that as a facetious comment. I mean that they have followed a socialist/humanist bent for so long that it is impossible for them to consider that their whole worldview/sociological/etc. model is destructive. After calling Bush the worst of everything, they can’t bear the thought that they have made a mistake with his successor. They will be dragged kicking and screaming (figuratively at least) from believing that he is a ruse and all of their hopes should lie in someone and something else. I believe people do want something better out of life, but it ain’t comin’ by this current method. For those who are ashamed of the US: Have you considered leaving here and assimilating in another country and leave this one AS IS for those of us who love this country? (Instead of trying to make it into your own personal vision?) We have seen the other experiments in governance out there and none of them work as well as a free country under free men with a constitution.

  34. 34. Kathy

    I’m in a media career and I hate what’s going on. I’m a closet conservative, thanks to the liberal media where I work.

    People need to abandon traditional media, get behind Palin as an independent and put this country back on the right course.

    Obama will be the death of this country and all its freedoms.

    Newsweek is great for the bird cage. Obama has yet to hold an open Town Hall discussion with anyone who has a difference of opinion with the direction of America. Everything is staged. Even Press conferences are staged. He has accomplished NOTHING to move people off unemployment or instill confidence in our economy. These journalist hero worshippers do a disservice to their profession. Thank God for the internet and cable!

    I do so hope you are being ironic . .

    “It should also be noted that it is not proper to attack a fellow journalist”

    Delia @ 41 beat me to it, Michael (#38). The “book” on Obama, including his associations with Rev. Wright, William Ayers, Saul Alinsky and others was on the internet for months prior to the election. Various web links proffered questions regarding Obama’s birthplace, citizenship, childhood/upbringing, education, religious history and other pertinent issues. Anyone with a brain knew there were too many unanswered questions regarding the junior senator from Illinois. It is YOU, Michael, as well as the 52 million who voted for this Marxist, who were not paying attention. “Hope” you got the “Change” you were looking for.

  46. 46. blue sky

    Obama was voted into office because of the color of his skin, that’s the only reason. A sad commentary of where the USA is in values.

    Give the liberals/Dems/uneducated/uninformed free money every month for life and they’ll vote a plant into office.

    Do you honestly believe the people that voted for this man investigated, or cared, about his background? Hell no!!..they were more interested in running the Vp candidate into the ground then to understand who the Demo cand for president was.

    Sorry Deep Brain– With the MSM constantly putting out puff pieces on Obama throughout the campaign, while consistantly hammering away at McCain and Palin, you can’t see that may have had a major impact? How about teachers unions, who are chock full of leftist, constantly preaching the leftist line and condemning conservatives? By the way, this is nothing new. I remember coming home from school during the LBJ/Goldwater election, and all of the kids in the bus were signing songs in support of LBJ. I wonder where we got all those ideas? Even then the schools were indoctrinating us.

    Not sure if Michael voted for Obama. Thats why I wrote “It is YOU, Michael, as well as the 52 million who voted for this Marxist, who were not paying attention.” I was not (at that point) including Michael in the “52 million”. I did, however, insinuate that he could be among the “hope and Changers”. Depends how you read it, I guess. In any case I’m not trying to beat Michael (or anyone else) with a club. I’m merely noting that his statements (Americans make good voting desicions, when they have good information. Anyone who claims that most Americans had good information the past 4 years wasn’t paying attention.) were patently ridiculous. The “book” on Obama was their prior to the election for anyone wanting to look. G’day!

    Other super powers(China, India, Russia or, still, Japan) spend time nourishing their traditions and are at least not belittling their past history!! Why has Obama deemed it necessary to deprecate any and all pride in the American idea/nation…a country whose – mostly – good sense in foreign policy is attached to humanitarian effort,while the U.S. is showing will and heart in negotiating peace between adversaries and is still the Santa Claus of the world when contributions/pay checks from Europe and Asia are few and far between?!!
    Why is Obama such a reckless anti-American President, and does he expect to go down in history with his recent record of denigrating the West while kowtowing to dictatorships…pace his silken attitude toward reactionary powers?

    WHY DO YOU BEHAVE LIKE THIS, OBAMA???

  56. 56. White helmet

    You want moonbat? I give you moonbat!!

    You’re all pathetically jealous of flattering coverage of Obama. You’d rather read about Britney’s last haircut, McCaiin’s last denture check up or perhaps Sanford’s latest tedious and sobbing revelation instead of–an interview with a man who came from now where to be President.

    Read something for a change instead of Human Events and other posts on this blog. You might learn something.

    NEWSWEEK can’t do an interview with any republican–most are terminally boring, have done nothing except cheat on their wives while boast about family values, and none are as articulate as Obama.

    Who could NEWSWEEK interview for the repub side? Ann Coulter? (busy tryig on another on of those balck dresses she’s really too old to wear now); Sanford? Busy flying to Argentina while claming he’s hiking. Mitt Rommney? Busy combing his hair–even the GOP base din’t get fored up for him. Palin? Well, we’d need a big re-write and have to find a way to insert the honking geese into text.

    And if you guys are soooo smart, why is there no media other than PJM that panders to you? Have you perhaps lost the ability of explaining to anyone outside the National review why whatever you think (assumes a lot) matters?

    Now I’ll just sit back and wait for the russshhhh of pile on posts calling me an imbecile, a basement dweller, an enabler of the government’s take over of mendicant corporations needing taxpayer money for their jets and bonuses……

  57. 57. steveg

    #56…You’re mind has been poisoned so severely by left-wing indoctrination, I almost feel sorry for you.

  58. 58. White helmet

    steveg @ 57: “almost” is not worth mentioning, so don’t.

    Don’t even think of thinking of feeling sorry. The Dems control both houses, soon the Supreme court and the White House, primarily because you all cannot explain why anyone should vote for you. “Small government! (except we want to outlaw abortion, pot, gay marriage to anme only a few). FRUGALITY! (except when the GOP controls congress, when we get to spend deficits) or when the GOP controls the white house (when we get to appoint boobs to the SEC, let Madoff run wild, allow the housing bubble to build, and never veto a spending bill).

    Obama is a telgenic latter day reagan on the democratic side and you can’t stand it! So rather than read what he says, you’d rather have NEWSWEEK publish an interview with . . .Uhm , help me here, who on earth would you want to feature?

    I do admit that if they featured all the good looking right wingers, I’d buy the issue too. You guys do have better looking women in newscasting and commentary. But…ooops! None are running for office.

    Saltherring at 60: “How can you dabate with someone (#58 White helmet) who referrs to Obama as a “telgenic [sic] latter day reagan [sic]“? Not hard to see how an empty-suited Marxist generates 52 million votes when Americans “think” like White helmet.”

    And indeed Salty, you don’t even try. You prefer instead the tired old grammar school teacher approach (“this is marred with typos”) while oafishly making your own typos (“debate” is not spelled “dabate” unless you’re from NJ and spelling as you pronounce). You even try the Peltonian “bury them with insults approach” (“empty-suited marxist”), which is a pretty poor insult (tell me- if you can find the words- is there a “full-suited” marxist?).

    So having failed to “duhbate” or even make a point for yourself, you at least made mine: Obama’s detractors on this blog, with few exceptions, include for the most part, oafish buffoons that cannot hold a thought longer than a ditzy blonde at the hairdresser. They can only explain their dislike of Obama by hurling weird insults like “empty-suited marxist.” I swear, Frank Drebbin of Police Squad was better at insulting people (if you don’t get that, watch Naked Gun 2 and 1/2-it’ll be at your level and the sentences aren’t too long. At one point he calls someone “mr Poopy pants.” Its perfect for you).

    I don;t know about this hoped for return of the republican party. The rot on your side of the fence is worse than I thought. “Dabate.” Priceless.

    Jesus said in the last days perilous times would come… Our only way out is with Jesus Christ.. He made a way for us to escape the pollution of this world.

    Things will not get better, it will only get worse according to the bible, ( a book that has stood the test of time ). satan has a counterfeit for everything that God has.. I believe that very soon we will see the anti-christ rise up and bring peace all across the world. I just pray that MANY have called on the true and living Christ.

    White helmet, I am glad you are on this thread… it keeps me from drifting too far left to see your posts.

    Worst fault is Obama is such a crashing bore when he talks. He is great at stating the blindingly obvious (i.e. “we’re in the worst economic crisis since……”) but not so nimble when it comes to suggesting solutions, apart of course, from giving more money to the crooked swines who lost/stole it all in the first place. Tedious, mediocre little man, great disappointment. Only looked good in 2008 because predecessor such a total twat.
