Narcissism and Denial in the Obama Administration

Therapists, more than many, appreciate the fact that people engage in all sorts of self-deception all the time. Psychiatry and psychotherapy is essentially a search for the truth; which is sometimes hidden beneath layers and layers of self-deception and cleverly deployed psychological defenses that protect and insulate the individual from confronting something painful and devastating to their world.
It is for this reason that psychotherapy can take a great deal of courage on the part of the patient; and a great deal of persistent probing on the part of the therapist. Simply put, psychological health and the ability to function optimally in life absolutely depends on being able to recognize reality and effectively deal with it. Self-deception is fundamentally dysfunctional, and over the long-term potentially lethal.
And it is this difficulty in recognizing the reality of the Massachusetts election that is one of the major dysfunctions of the Obama administration.
The administration is perfused with a narcissistic belief that everything they want to do is what the American people want. It doesn’t matter that a national tea party movement has formed and that demonstrations against higher spending, higher taxes, and increased federal intervention in the private sector (banks, automobiles, housing, etc.) have been increasing on almost a weekly basis.
So why does this administration have so much difficulty recognizing that the people, the majority of whom voted for him, are so troubled with the direction they feel the country is headed in? It’s almost like the administration is saying to itself: “What’s the matter with these people? Don’t they know that we know what is best for them?” It is precisely the answers to these questions that seem not to penetrate the collective heads in the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives.
The Democrats were swept into power in 2008 and given a filibuster-proof majority in which they could enact just about anything they wanted. President Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (plus Vice President Joe Biden) believed, with some justification, that the power they had been entrusted with was sufficient to move the Democratic program down the road. Obama had been sworn in as the first (real) black president, people were ecstatic, and D.C. was crammed with celebrants at the inauguration. Change and hope were in the air; people were enthused with the concept of “yes we can!”
And the administration, in their narcissism, let this go to their heads, forgetting that leadership and cooperation are required to change the direction of the ship of state.
The American public began to see the problems with an encroaching federal government, and the high spending and higher taxes that would be required to fund the government at the much, much higher levels. In fact, the Heritage Foundation states that the federal income tax will become more progressively discouraging:
Hard work, savings, investing, and entrepreneurship. Discouraging these catalysts of economic growth is always counterproductive, but doing so during a severe economic recession is particularly irresponsible.
Those in power do not really believe that the lumpen proletariat understands this, but they do, and they are banding together.
It will be up to the president, his cronies, and the folks in Congress to work through their denial, to cast aside their narcissistic delusions, and to listen to the people. We weren’t joking in Virginia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts; we were serious, and the Obama administration better understand this or they will find themselves in dire straits indeed.
A few years ago, before 9-11, a Kenyan went into the the cockpit of a 747 and grabbed the wheel and tried to steer the plane into the ground. With the help of a passenger, the crew was able to subdue the intruder and regain control of their aircraft, after having dived 20,000 ft. That Kenyan was deemed to be mentally ill.
Denial of reality can only happen if you experience reality. The President has never lived in the real world, same goes for the elitist politicians.
If the President lies all the time pretty soon he doesn’t know the difference between a lie and the truth. The President hasn’t spoken the truth in a long time. What he speaks and believes is part of his fantasy world. Like all progressives he lives believing that his ideology can save the world when the reality is that his progressive/socialist ideology has nearly destroyed the world and has slaughtered hundreds of millions. Something in them knows there is something wrong with their ideas, otherwise they wouldn’t have tried to hide them for so long. The reality in America is most of us hate those ideas. Maybe those like the president who hold to these fantasies are sick or evil.
The President is like a used car salesman; he believes his own line of bull. Delusional, denial, sick or evil, does it really matter which?
The important thing for those who do live in the real world is stop the madmen before they destroy us all.
As you so rightly say a Narcissist by virtue of his sickness is completely unable to recognise far less admit that he might even remotely possibly be wrong. No it is everyone else who is wrong and they just do not have the intellectual ability to see the problem and the solutions that he does. And that sums up the LYING MOHAMMEDAN BOGUS POTUS’s attitude perfectly.

But I agree totally that his statement was “an interesting premise in sort of a semi-psychotic way: “Anger at Republicans causes voters to vote for a Republican.” Obama clearly has serious unresolved personality problems stemming from his confused childhood that are going to surface eventually.

The name “narcissism” is derived from Greek mythology. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus.
Now, in all sincerety, who can doubt that Obama is in love with the sound of his own voice? I mean, really! And it seems like Obama is unable to consummate his love to himself, and he is slowly changing into a teleprompter.
I believe that J.D. Salinger described Obama perfectly in the “Catcher in the Rye”.

GM, how did you choose the “denial / delusion” hypothesis over the “bad men with evil intentions” hypothesis? The senior members of the Administration, including The Won himself, are clearly intelligent enough to grasp the immense opposition to their agenda. Given that the lot of them have been in public life since toddlerhood, isn’t the notion that they’re well-meaning but in denial of political reality against the odds?
G.M. Roper apparently believes President Precedent has the psychological cajones to be able to cast aside his lifelong narcissistic delusions. I doubt many of the readers here can muster up that much positive thinking. (I think he can I think he can I think he can) We are in dire straits already because of his psychological insufficiencies, let’s not hope for change on his part.

Psychiatry and psychotherapy suffers from as much, or more self denial and disillusionment as does politics and politicians. Both of them are generally full of advice and answers to everyone else’s problems, but it is a rarity that any of their solutions work.
In life, common sense and the simple truth always works more cures and wonders than the 8th floor of a hospital or the U.S. Capitol building ever will.
There are bad people in the world that will take advantage of stupid people until good people step in and put a stop to the process.

I was railing against this pompous juvenile three years ago.
Apparently, more than half of this country is delusional. It’s going to take some truly biblical tragedy to bring these people to reality. Nothing else in history has ever worked before.
“In God We Trust”: I think god has forsaken this country.
Obama is a pathological narcissist; he probably moved into this state as a very young boy. It’s not curable, and his preferred career choices – of community organizer, of senator, of president, have cocooned him from acountability.
He’s not an idealogue for not only is he intellectually shallow and ignorant of history and economics, but he has no curiosity nor capacity to work from facts and theory. He achieves in life by psychologically manipulating other people. Not by intellectual persuasion. His three tactics of getting people to be in his control are: misinformation, emotional manipulation using fear and hope, and accusations of bias if you reject him. He uses all three constantly.
He lies constantly; he tells each audience what he thinks they want to hear; the fact that it’s untrue is irrelevant. He’ll tell a different tale the next day. These lies are constant, about costs, about his agenda, about jobs ‘saved’, etc.
He manipulates people to follow him based on fear, with his threats that ‘if you don’t do as I say, this terrible event will occur’. Or hope – ‘the oceans will cease to rise’.
And bias – he uses the race card constantly.
The backroom gang who run Obama ARE idealogues; they use Obama as their salesman to get their socialist statist control in power. Obama is embedded with socialism only because it is the political ideology that sets up a Ruler Elite Class. He needs this for his narcissism.
If you reject Obama, he’ll turn on you; he HAS to control you or he feels threatened. So, the fact that most Americans don’t want his statist health care, etc, doesn’t mean that Obama will change it. No, for that would put YOU, the People, in control. That frightens Obama’s narcissistic need to be in sole control.
Obama has no interest in America or Americans. He’s a creature of his psychological pathology. Put someone as psychologically disturbed as him in power, and the need to control expands more and more. Notice how he’s always reminding people that ‘I’m the President’. And his anger at people who reject His Will.

I’d say that the Obama administration is infused with the belief that their 6% (or so) margin in the popular vote gave them a mandate to “fundamentally transform America”, opposition to their agenda be damned.
That mentality has to be the genesis of statements like “iWon” and admonitions that the opposition should shut up and get out of the way while the peoples’ handlers in Washington DC set about mopping up. (Obama is way too fixated on blaming his predecessor, another psychological giveaway)
Post democrat losses in NJ, VA, MA, recent Obama admin. strategies are part of an orchestrated push (bringing back their campaign guy John Podesta) to shove the pre-existing, unchanged agenda down Americans’ throats, IOW, salesmanship.

Also agree with #6…was it VDH who had an article a year ago wondering whether The Won was “incompetent or evil”? My read on the O administration is they are not in denial, they just don’t care. They believe they won the right to tell the rest of us what to do in every aspect of our lives and if we don’t go along, and thank them for it, well, we are being racists, obstructionists, with no ideas of our own, and objecting for the simple reason that we want to deny them a victory. At least I think that is the narrative they’ve chosen, it’s a bit hard to follow since the prez mostly talks in terms of “I” and “me”.

I want to believe that there are enough Citizens of the United States who recognize the corruption and evil of this administration for what it is and will use our power of The Vote to stop the down hill slide. This forum gives me hope, but it’s not going to be easy. We have all got to be alert and ready to act on our knowledge.
I agree with the entire article, except for the part about Scott Brown being a conservative republican. I’m not so sure about that.
In my thinking I see Obama’s presidency as an indication of the nations character. He is only the figure of the electoral manifestation, so to speak. If they (the majority vote) were more conservative at heart then another “figure” would appear to fulfill and fill in that void. Barack is the result of this rule. He represents the nation’s heartfelt desire to articulate well enough (without direct confrontation) a break from the Judeo-Christian values and norms of the past. Do not hate him for showing up on time.
Were the people tricked? Sure, but that doesn’t even matter. What matters is you are here, and they are there. And, of course, Fate has this way of saying in a profound way, You were tricked because you wanted to be tricked.
The Obama Democrats were doing a lot of ground work in the election, and Republicans need to counter their force if there will be a halt to Liberaldom, and a return to sensibility in America. And even more so than this, families need to get their acts together. Start paying attention to what, WHAT, your children are and what they are becoming.
We meet illiterate people without realizing it, because they do not seem to be illiterate. For them, pretending to know how to read is a full-time job, and they become masterful in this deception, so we meet illiterate people without realizing it. Their denial invites our denial, and we generally accept the invitation.
In the case of BHO, his existential challenge is not illiteracy, but immaturity, of which narcissism is of course a big part. He was elected because he knows how to look and act sensitive to other people’s discomforts, and pretends to be compassionate, which narcissists are in fact incapable of, as little children also are.
In the case of the little children, it is alright, but grown-ups incapable of compassion are seriously mentally ill, or at the minimum, seriously immature. For children, it is not denial of reality, it is only ignorance. For grown-ups it can become industrial strength denial.
The outcome is a masterful pretense of maturity and wisdom, cultivated by years of hiding one’s shortcomings, a profoundly human behavior, living in a fantasy world, even in adulthood, or the external appearence thereof.
For instance, having lived in America for most of his life, BHO in fact failed to grasp what America really is. A responsible leader would not have triggered vigorous tea parties. The core of the problem was an electorate unable to recognize the mirage of a look-good, sound-good, make-me-feel-good candidate of no particular achievement and little chance to grow on the job. We are responsible for choosing our leaders carefully, and this time, we failed! Learning can be tough.
I don’t want to change the tone here as S. Brown isn’t the main subject, but just make a point. Scott Brown is the sort of person who pushes people out of the Republican Party. What he did, his first vote on the Senate floor, was an affront to all of us who supported him.
His vote has a serious external effect: it makes people sick of the GOP and forces them towards a third party, with all its perils.

While as a clinical psychologist I love to “explore the depths”, I always remind myself to acknowledge the obvious. Obama is doing just what he said he would do during the campaign – transform, redistribute, and lower the worlds opinion of the USA. Everyone has seen the apologies and now you are seeing the multitude of ways toward redistribution such as via health care, cap and trade, bailouts, buyoffs, and end runs with czars. He is being enabled by congressional socialists, and naive citizenry. Given this, why should he change ? Very heady times for this guy who will play out his agenda at the expense of anyone and everyone – even if they finally wake up. Being in a religious like delusion he will feel as confirmed in his beliefs as much by his failures as by his successes. With properly limited government, Barackorama would be just a side show – maybe never happen at all because there would not be the attraction of power and wealth to be spread out to one’s friends and ideological sympathizers.
The real Federal work is done by the military and the Supreme Court and whatever Bureau it was that made sure the train tracks were all the same width.
It’s increasingly evident that the President is still on the campaign trail. He’s leaving the “messy” job of being President of the United States to others, e.g. his staff, and to Speaker Pelosi, who are in reality making the decisions. He is President in name only.

Clinically, I don’t believe the two are mutually exclusive, and if Roper has read his Baumeister, he’s aware of this. Like Bill Clinton’s, BHO’s developmental history is a classic series of events that inflated a monumental balloon of lofty, unwarranted self-esteem – the raw material from which pathological narcissism is built. Martin E. P. Seligman had this to say about that:

Obama uses a dead mans social security card and he wants us to believe he is not a insane mobster. He is as evil as Stalin and Hitler and will most likely proof that to us in the near future.
