Law & Order and Double Standards
Almost every time I tune in to the show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU), there is some kind of grotesque and pathetically cheap leftist message being perpetuated. Recently, as most of us know, the show had a character verbalize a connection between a psychotic murder and the fans of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Bill O’Reilly. The connection, naturally, is that these three individuals are “a cancer spreading ignorance and hate.”
The other day another episode I watched launched a ferocious attack on a religion and, surprise, surprise, it wasn’t Islam. The producers didn’t take the road less traveled. You know, the one on which you confront the real dangers facing us but risk attracting lawsuits and death threats and, well, you know, putting your job and life at stake and stuff like that. Why bother doing all that when you can just dip into the trendy liberal moral sewer and attack the Catholic Church — with no consequences to your own career and personal well-being? The Catholic Church is so evil, you see, that absolutely nothing will happen to you after you attack it.
In this particular episode, a Catholic priest molests boys and the Church covers it all up. The script offers a politically correct delicacy in which the seal of confession is portrayed as a vile rule created by horrid men for the purpose of institutionalizing abuse and tyranny. There are no complexities, nothing to be said about the sacredness and importance of a priest having the obligation of keeping a confessed sin a secret. It’s all just so simple and, of course, evil.
Suffice it to say that the subject of this show is a reality in terms of the abuse of young boys by certain Catholic priests and its subsequent cover-up. These crimes have been investigated, exposed, and punished. And they should continue to be investigated, exposed, and punished. So as the topic for a show on television, it’s clearly warranted and legitimate.
But to suggest that all Catholic priests are guilty is a crock, as is the premise that the guilty did what they did because of, and not in spite of, Catholic teachings. Aside from the legitimate argument (that I hold as a Catholic) that forced celibacy is part of the problem since it could attract questionable people and also engender sexual frustration that may lead to abuse, Catholicism itself is not the fertile soil for, and the sanctioning of, sexual abuse by men of young boys — which the episode in question slanderously implies.
In any case, I now wonder: when will Law & Order: SVU, for the sake of intellectual diversity and political balance, do a show on Islam with the same paradigm of lethal criticism? For instance, when will it do a show about an Islamic “honor” killing on American soil, which is happening with increasing frequency, and then have discussions between the characters about how the ingredients of Islamic theology inspire and sanction this monstrosity being perpetrated against Muslim women (i.e., female sexuality and freedom are demonized; women are men’s property, Koran 2:223; men are mandated to beat their disobedient wives, Koran 4:34; etc.)?
When will the producers write this script? Should I hold my breath?

They can’t do that. Their heads would crazily spin on their necks if they had to consider that</i unlikely scenario.
Here in Asia we get the older episodes, but I remember one about killing that involved female circumcision (the killing was to stop it), another about an abused woman who killed her Muslim husband, and I believe another about an honor killing, but it was awhile back.
They also had one on animal rights terrorism, which is usually ignored by the MSM, even though these incidents have been the major cause of domestic terrorism in the US.
Maybe they don’t always get the ratios right, but I suspect that statistically the number of Muslim “honor killings” in the US is lower than good old boys who kill their girlfriends or wives.
Yes, they tend to be PC but not completely so…
and as a Catholic, I get upset when they hit on priests, 99 percent who are honorable, but since most of us know someone harmed by a pedophile priest, this is fair game…as long as someone points out the high pedophile rate in public schools in the same episode.
This is one of those arguments that can be molded into almost any direction, if the writer/commenter wants the conversation to go in that direction. L&O SVU has always been somewhat PC, but it reflects society in that regard (“Special” Victims Unit, as if other victims of other crimes were ordinary…but remember, they didn’t choose the name, NYPD did.) and so it’s hard to fault them for it. Police these days do a version of most of the things that the characters in the show do, and it’s often been my thought that Chris Meloni’s character (Eliot Stabler) often crosses the line and interrogates the suspects too roughly, and would probably have been suspended by now.
So I think you’re spinning your wheels, reaching for something to write about, and you came up with this. Better luck next time.
As far as their treatment of Muslims, I will agree that they’ve not had Muslim extremist bad guys in every second or third episode. Since the show is built around sex crimes, and *most* (notice I didn’t say all) Muslim terrorists don’t engage in sex crimes, this omission isn’t, in my opinion anyway, that surprising. Either L&O SVU, or L&O (I think it was SVU) did an episode about female circumcision, though, a few years ago. The perpetrators were Somalis, and there was little mention of religion. It’s actually not a religious practice, it’s an African and sometimes Arab custom that’s been melded onto Muslim traditions in some regions…rather like–in this and only this regard–Christmas trees are part of Christianity.
On this site we suddenly have people attacking cop shows for supposedly partisan liberal biases in the content of their shows. I mentioned an episode of Law & Order Classic earlier this year in which (PLOT SPOILER) a Republican infiltrated a Democratic-oriented community organization (an obvious stand-in for ACORN) and got tape of one of the organizers suggesting something very nefarious. The founder of the organization orchestrated the Republican’s murder. Sam Waterston’s character (Manhattan DA Jack McCoy) is openly a Democrat. A few years ago, Fred Thompson was on the show in the same position, and he was openly a Republican, so there’s no real discrimination here…remember, this takes place in Manhattan, where Republicans are an endangered species. Anyway, the guy who turned out to be the killer showed up in McCoy’s office and reminded him how much money his organization had funneled into McCoy’s reelection campaign, and McCoy responded by telling him the check returning the money was in the mail. Later, while he was making a speech, members of the organization heckled him, and had to be removed from the crowd. The whole thing made the ACORN surrogate look like a combination subversive conspiracy and criminal enterprise (something I think most of us would agree with.) Point here is they didn’t pull any punches, and were pretty hard on the Democrats. Where’s the bias? When I brought this episode up in a comment related to the other article, everyone ignored it, and several continued with the argument that L&O was biased in favor of liberals.
As I keep saying, fiction is really about entertaining your audience. If your show is plot-oriented, you can’t simply repeat Muslim bad guys endlessly, and expect ratings. In a crime show, you entertain your audience, to a fair extent anyway, by surprising them with whodunit. Law & Order is already notorious with myself and my wife for doing this, by hiring one A-list guest star for each episode, with that individual almost always being the culprit.
As for the Muslim gang rape suggestion, that happened 8 years ago, in Australia. The Law & Orders tend to stick closer to home, and do stories on incidents that are more recent. If it happens here, I’m sure it’ll become part of one of their shows, but halfway around the world, and that long ago? I doubt it.
Lastly as to your defense of Catholics, which I thought a bit strained and thin. Regardless of what you say, the *fact* of the matter is that the Church knew it had a number of these “problem” priests, and in some cases they just moved them to other parishes and did nothing else. Their counseling to these guys was based on abstinence alone, and clearly didn’t work most of the time. In one case the guy belonged to a group advocating “man-boy love” and the Church knew it, and essentially ignored the problem. Until victims started suing, the church didn’t think it had a problem, and the only thing that got their attention was the possibility of losing large amounts of money. Whatever else the Catholic Church is or does, that fact doesn’t make them look very good, and anyone who says differently simply wasn’t paying attention while the story unfolded. Cover-up and prevarication aren’t admissions of guilt, they’re acknowledgment of the fact that others find your behavior objectionable…and tepid, half-hearted apologies, once you’re on the hook for serious cash, don’t work with most people, because everyone knows it’s in your best interest to be forgiven *before* the damages are awarded. The Church deserved the show, and frankly I thought this the weakest part of a very weak article.
If only this phenomenon were confined to ”Law & Order” – but, most unfortunately, it is pervasive in all media. We are fed a daily diet of liberal BS, quite literally, we are being buried in an avalanche of BS.
TV, movies, newspapers, our universities, are little more than purveyers of propaganda & political correctness.
I can’t even count the number of times I switch channels after the first few minutes of a movie or TV series. I’ve given up entirely on mainstream newspapers & TV news broadcasts.
Hmm. I’m not sure if I posted this already, or closed the tab by accident. So I’ll post it again.
““honor” killing and the Islamic theology behind it?”
How does that account for hindu honor killings on the subcontinent, or christian honor killings in the middle-east and south america?
Actually, there was an SVU episode about ‘honour’ killing, but it aired pre-9/11: http://www.tvrage.com/Law_And_Order_SVU/episodes/101281/02×02
There will never be a show that shows/condemns islam for what it is. . . If you don’t like the Law and Order shows, don’t watch them. I don’t, and I am surviving fine without them. . . .As an aside, don’t try that muslim rape stuff here in the South, it won’t go very well for you. . . we still have our cajones done here. I hope the men in Europe can grow some new ones, they are gonna need ‘em.
Law & Order became nothing but a vehicle for increasingly violent porn a couple of years ago and we stopped watching it. You have to wonder about the writers of a show who can churn nothing out of their imagination but ever more inventive ways to violate women as “entertainment.” I did note that the setup of the opening scene or subsequent plot often showed in subliminal ways that the woman somehow deserved it.
I hope someone pays you to watch any of the Law and Order shows. With rabid lefties like Vincent D’Onofrio and writers that seem to be employees of Harry Reid’s campaign staff how to you retain your sanity and perspective. Never, ever forget all shows are scripted in one form or another. What an actor says is debated in writers meetings and approved by the producers/directors/etc. Even “talk news” shows stage their interviews and their questions. If you feel they’re being dishonest, turn them off.
Simply do not support shows these shows, these writers and these networks. What I do is review the days TV schedule to see if there are any shows that are worth my time. If not, I have a Netflix-night. Lately, it’s been Netflix all the time except for sports shows.
That show has already aired:

They have been in the do not watch column for the last two months. They were always close but the Beck, Limbaugh episode was the proverbial straw.
“Law & Order SVU” used to display interesting plots dealing with the minds of real criminals. However, in its current form, it has become something like “Refer Madness” with Christianity — especially Roman Catholicism — replacing “the dread marijuana” of the 1930s film. The plots are ridiculous, such as when a Catholic high school boy is driven mad by his chastity club (and we assume lack of sex) and murders a girl in the school. The underlying premise seemed to be that if it weren’t for those Christians, kids would be having all the sex they want, and there wouldn’t be all these murders. The show’s plots have become quite foolish, and as I said, similar to those cartoonish scare films of the 1930s.
Good question. They’ve attacked virtually every other religion (Catholicism, Judaism, Protestantism, etc) but not the dominant violent religion in the world.
But Islam is the religion of peace, we have been told this over and over. The IRS even grants tax exempt status to organizations such as cair to spread the word. It’s not like some little jihadi would threaten or try to kill them for portraying the truth about islam.
There was another episode in the last several weeks that really ticked me off. In this one they had as a suspect in a crime a “militia” member, a defiant man who was suspicious of the government and didn’t want the SVU detectives coming on his property and questioning him without a warrant, and sure enough, the SVU detectives walked on to his property, started to ask him questions, and one spotted a large quantity of, I think it was insecticide, in his garage and voila, they charged him with terrorism for having such a large quantity of a potentially dangerous substance in his possession, and hauled him off to the police station for interrogation.
Later, they showed his militia group—everyone armed with a rifle—staging a loud protest outside the police station where he was jailed and being questioned—and constantly mocked by the detectives during the interrogations, by the way. So all the detectives in the precinct were rounded up, they put on bullet proof vests and went outside and disbursed this militia group; this episode was an illustrated version of the DHS report on how gun owners, those opposed to bigger, more intrusive government, and those in favor of states rights were “right wing extremists” and potential “domestic terrorists.”
In the end, it turned out that the milita member was not the perp they had been seeking, but they took great pleasure anyway with socking this guy, who tried to stick up for his rights and who defied the police, with a conviction and five years probation.
This, plus the other episodes mentioned in the article tipped the scales for me. This is another show–really a vehicle for left wing propaganda more that entertainment, and getting more up front with it with each new episode–that I am no longer going to watch.
“liberals and leftists, who write the script of this show, simply cannot admit the evil, let alone the existence, of our society’s adversaries. That is because their goal is the hatred and destruction of our own society and its institutions and values.”
And this completely explains most of President Obama’s actions. And it explains all of the actions of his co-conspirators, Reid, Frank, and Pelosi and the Democrat-run Congress.
Law’n Order and off shoots have always been lib drivel. Stopped watching long ago.
That SVU with the slam against Beck, O’Reilly and Limbaugh was unintentionally ironic on their part for a number of reasons. Not the least of which is that in the end, to save the world from a murdering brainwashed beck supporter the left wing lawyer in question MURDERS HIS CLIENT.
So the lesson in the end was simply “don’t defend those crazy right wing murdering pigs… murder THEM instead!!”
Also, on a quick side note: having watched the SVU episode in question I find the defense of the episode completely stupid. The caricature of a “right wing talk show host” in the show was a guy flagrant with racial epithets and calls for his listeners to send illegals home in “a pine box”. When the lawyer then equated such talk with Beck, O’Reilly and Limbaugh the ONLY problem presented by the show to his argument is “Yeah sure… Beck, O’Reilly and Limbaugh ARE as bad as this caricature we portrayed… and yes they DO incite violence and create murderers… but that is not grounds for an insanity defense!” ….
So yeah, spare me, liberals, your disingenuous defense of SVU.. they really did mean it the way us “right wingers” have portrayed it. And unlike those “right wing talk show hosts” slammed in the episode, the producers of SVU are the only ones tacitly condoning violence.
I always knew that leftists were moral cowards, the realization that they are also physical cowards is a new discovery.
Jesus was a tough man. I suspect he would find the pathetic writers for Law and Order who attack a good man and his church in order to find favor with muslims sad.
We simply need to get the names of the sponsors and write them, informing them that we will no longer purchase or use their products. Its all about money and that is the only thing a lot of people understand. What the Lefist media is doing is dangerous to our country and is going to hurt us in the long run. it is disgusting and dishonest.
And let’s not forget the L&O SVU episode last year where the evil war-mongering military recruiter told the detective that his son would soon be 18, and there would then be nothing the detective could do to stop his son from joining the military. The only thing missing was a reference to the 3-headed Bush-Cheney-Palin demon waiting for the poor kid’s soul once he enlisted.
I don’t know about any of the episodes you mention because I DON’T WATCH THIS GARBAGE!!!!!
If enough others join me (open a good book or talk to your family or something–why does the television deserve hours and hours of your life???) the great propaganda machine will lose some of its power.
Its a shame since the show is otherwise pretty good. Its not garbage. Its really annoying to see the leftist tropes in every series, but its no surprise.
Hollywood writers and directors are some of the least educated, most herd-like people in the country. What little they read is limited almost entirely to fiction or facile magazine “opinion pieces” that eschew facts. Hugo Chazez? Many might not know who he is. Buying votes with medicaid funds? Blank look.
When Hitler’s bones had been dust for decades, that terrific old 60′s show, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE featured endless resurgent groups of nazis trying to establish the 4th Reich–while communist countries were expanding at a record clip. The USSR? I don’t recall it ever being mentioned by name.
Rob Reiner, a decent man and great producer–has probably never read a college level history or economics book. His enjoyable movie “The American President” found global warming and the NRA to be the real enemies of the people. He managed to skip islamic militants, leftist speech code fanatics, and corrupt politicians of both parties spending us into the poorhouse. Those conniving rightwingers and the NRA were the bad guys. Its so simple! And so easy! Real historical study is hard!
The same writers and their endless pontificating finally drove me away from the legal series with Bill Shatner and James Spader. It was a great series but it just became too much.
Dick Wolfe’s bunch is no different: they just has to take pot shots at every republican, main stream church and more of most people. Its the overcontrolling dad that’s at fault for his daughter’s wayward life. Corporate greed types that need to be jailed. They even took some pot shots at the war in Iraq.
Dream on if you’re waiting for these people to conenct with real life. Watch for more corporate greed: don’t expect anything about corrupt democratic politicians, earmarks, buying health acre votes with medicaid money. The catholic church? No credit for eduacting millions of kids even today and doing it well. They’ll be on the abuse thing for decades. Corrupt and incompetent teachers unions? What are they?
My wife and I still watch the L&O franchise sometimes, but years ago we noticed two trends:
(1) As Jonah Goldberg once pointed out, the scripts in the original series were “ripped from the headlines” only by taking a real news story and dropping in a fictional murder.
(2) Most SVU episodes contain what we call a “public service moment” where someone, usually a detective in the squad room, makes a little speech about how “86% of domestic assaults go unreported,” or whatever the issue du jour happens to be.
Add to that the PC self-righteousness, and the franchise has gone downhill.
There was already an episode of Criminal Intent about an honor killing.
Every episode I’ve watched has the Law and Order ‘good-guys’ breaking laws left and right to nail the people they intuitively ‘know’ are guilty but normal prosecution might allow them to go free.
Biggest PC phony load of hypocrite bull on the air.
Mr. Glazov,
I agree with most of your article, but this passage from it, doesn’t hold to logic.
“Aside from the legitimate argument (that I hold as a Catholic) that forced celibacy is part of the problem since it could attract questionable people and also engender sexual frustration that may lead to abuse…”
Studies show that there is a vast amount of pedophiles among married men. Celibacy was obviously NOT the cause in this many cases. Additionally, think a little. Your logic says that we should have men who are pedophiles married instead of being forced to live a life of celibacy.
and why would the vow of celibacy attract questionable characters to the priesthood? You might want to look into the Protestant, atheist, Muslim, etc, etc child abuse unreported scandals. In fact, these groups have a much higher child abuse problem than you will ever find in the Roman Catholic Church. Not justifying anything the RCC has done or not done, just saying that your celibacy based logic is erroneous.
If you looke at married atheist, Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, etc, etc, etc, the rate of child sexual abuse is not higher or lower. It is about the same accross the board, however, it is MUCH higher than you find among single men and priests. Thus, obviously, the sexual abuse has NOTHING to do with being married or not.
The rest of your article is pretty much on point and I agree with it. But please, rethink your “logic” on the priest scandal having to do with celibacy. This is what our deprived, can’t control yourself Western culture pushes on us, but it is obviously not true.
Hell, I only watch because Mariska Hargitay is hot and it’s a cop show.
It’s true that the producers and writers of the Law and Order shows often come at things from a solidly left-liberal perspective. But we need to be careful in our criticisms. As others have noted, at least two episodes have dealt with honor killings:
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Season 2, Episode 2)
“Honor”
October 27, 2000
The vicious assault of an Afghan diplomat’s daughter uncovers clues that may suggest Taliban traditions justify “honor killings” when the child defies the wishes of their parents or their culture.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Season 6, Episode 11)
“World’s Fair”
January 2, 2007
… Detectives Logan and Wheeler investigate the murder of a young Pakistani-American female college student, found slain in front of the Unisphere …
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_Fair_%28Law_%26_Order:_Criminal_Intent_episode%29
The actual crime of Law And Order is white-hating racism, the blood-libel of showing whites as virtually all the murderers in cities where 90-95% of the murders are committed by non-whites. The detectives, lab techs, district attorneys, and judges are multi-racial, the criminals are all white. It’s a sign of how deeply entrenched and institutionalized white-hating racism is in this country that the author of this piece and several of the responders don’t mention this particular form of leftist bias. Talk about ignoring the elephant in the parlor.
Gee, I don’t know guys. Maybe L&O is becoming militantly leftist, but I’m either 1) not seeing it, or 2) am better at rolling with the punches than some of you. They have had honor killings, and many of the ‘lefty’ remarks have been confined to the likes of Det. Munch, the resident conspiracy guy on the series. In the primary L&O series, one of the detective teams expressed skepticism about global warming after uncovering a carbon trading and biofuels scam; it was a delight to hear and watch.
Try to parse any blatant propaganda from what the script is having the actors say as their personal opinions as fictional characters. I have been able to do so.
30. George H.:

Huh?
George, which Law and Order do you watch? The criminals have been multi-ethnic and multiracial. The show covers a wide range of criminality, including different types of murders, and therefore ranges well beyond the particular types of crimes whose perpetrators may be prepondantly nonwhite.
Once the preachy district attorney dude started on that show, my family stopped watching.
It is so leftist today. It was not that leftist before Bush was President. SVU is just a joke. Low-brow preachy ‘white-guy is Satan’ BS.
I once dumped a lady because I couldn’t take watching this cr*p any longer.
SVU especially is just complete utter drivel.
The fact is, bias. Liberal liberal liberal left, hate USA. Hollywood propoganda Obsama Hopeychangey. The Left. Muslims, religion of peace yeah right.
Also, all the bad guys are white and all the good guys are minorites.
Maybe when Hagrity gets to see her butt in the air…up close and personal for being a typical NY slut? Libbies…I think…feel invulnerable to life’s realities. They seem to think that somehow a muslim nut job freak will see the “libbie” tattoo on their forehead’s proclaiming them untouchable by muslim sheet heads? Or by life’s realities?
I stopped watching the show last year when it got so PC it became nauseating. Too bad because I used to like it. To tell the truth I don’t watch a lot of network TV anymore because of the very poor quality of the shows. I hope the same fate doesn’t befall “24″.
What I don’t get from these New Yak libbie arseholes…is that everyone one of them had some degree of connection to 911. In one way or another everyone in NY was associated or related to those who were SLAIN, MURDERED, ASSASSINATED IN THE NAME OF A SCUZZY IDEOLOGY CALLED ISLAM!!!! ISLAM IS NOTHING MORE THAN NAZISM, POLITICALLY…with a Middle Eastern twist. If Hitler were to have proclaimed Nazism as a religion…he’d have been as close to Islam as possible. As a matter of fact…Hitler, had he survived would most likely have been awarded a seat on the “HUMAN” rights council at the UN!!!
So why the tolerance in a city that was decimated, attacked and forever changed the landscape of it’s core? I ask why? We know that if we had attacked any muslim city in such a manner…they’d declare their “holy war” and try to wipe us out. Why…can’t we realize their treacherous desires and fight back?
My problem with the series is that ninety-eight percent of the plots on L&O are about murders, rapes, and child abuse, and there’s little to no stories involving simple robberies, aggravated assaults, kidnappings, carjackings, that kind of stuff. For heaven’s sake, if murder and rape is all it’s going to be about, WHAT WAS EVER SO GREAT ABOUT IT TO BEGIN WITH? Centering almost every episode around those kind of plots is pretty desperate and shows a severe lack of creativity.
Even early in the main series, there were a few very crudely written episodes that villified conservatives, whites, Jews, and Judeo-Christians. Interestingly enough, there was even at least one episode in the first season that could be considered insulting to Russians. I’m sure it wasn’t the last. It may have actually gotten worse after 1995, but even so, the liberal biases and contempt were still there. Why anyone who thinks the early seasons had anything worthy to them is way beyond me.
Well said, Jamie.
Please don’t hold your breath: you haven’t autographed my copy of “United in Hate” yet.
Having not read through the comments I am not sure if someone has already corrected the entire premise of your article, but they’ve already done the episode you are calling for. An Islamic diplomat’s daughter is killed after she decides she would prefer to be more “western.” ultimately, her brother is discovered to be the killer, acting on behalf of their father, who viewed her as a shame to the family. The mother actually reveals the honour killing, and is herself then killed by her husband for betraying him and the faith. Happy now? The sad thing is your point as to the overwhelming lefty madness that now pervades the law and order franchise is apt, but it is undermined by a lack of research.
Last night a rerun of Law and Order: Criminal Intent on TNT ran a story that actually depiced an honor killing. Equally important, it accurately protrayed the views of many Muslims that visit the US, holding one standard of behavior for men and a different one for women. Of course, it also repeated an underlying theme that South Asian Muslims in the US have been mistreated since 9/11, so it was not completely acurate.
Dick Wolfe, the man behind the “law and Order” series, has devolved into a hate America far leftist since his days as the producer of “hill street blues”. Munch is the only pinko idiot on the series? Have you ever watched the actor in Law/Order CI? The lead cop in that show is BLATANTLY a hate monger. Every white guy is automatically guilty. The mooselimb must be a victim of religious prejudice or the Jews made him do it. What they SHOULD do is potray the KORAN as the problem. After all, what book is telling them to MURDER there own families in the name of “religion”?
I quit watching this PC bunch of drivel call a “TV drama” a long time ago. It is always all liberalism all the way. I won’t waste my time on it.
Mr. Glazov:
Please, don’t hold your breath – we need you and your colleagues.
I’ve come to the depressing conclusion that nothing can be done to drive 1960s flowerchild groupthink from the so called minds of its slaves.
We’re going to have to do this ourselves – thank God for the second amenedment.
I an Australian originally liked this show. In the first episodes I saw, college students got a serve for promiscuity, a bad guy was the greenie, and a rocker was ridiculed for posing as an instant expert on prescription drugs and anything else. My jaw went slack – how did such un-PC material make it to the screen? And I saw at least one classic episode, the one starring Robin Williams as an eerily effective manipulator – great acting, great drama, no political heavy-handedness. All good things must come to an end. The rot set in with a ludicrous attempt at attacking the war in Iraq. It portrayed the Shia as the typical refugees from Iraq during the time of sectarian unrest there. Amir Taheri noted elsewhere that numerous Shia had flowed back into Iraq with the demise of Saddam – it was the Sunnis who were most prone to emigrate. This episode was a blundering attempt at emotional blackmail.
Still, look on the bright side. It wasn’t as bad as the episode of Spooks from the UK where the US was taking over Saudi Arabia, using as a pretext a terrorist raid on Britain that was faked by the US, but which cunningly used Jews as bogus Islamist terrorists. Ah, those Jews … I turned off most of this demented drivel, but did succumb to morbid curiosity to catch the end. The Israeli bogus terrorists had to be disposed of somewhere quiet – so where did they go? To Guantanamo Bay – ! The most overexposed location on the planet! This is the most imbecilic spy-story plot I have ever seen. It is to cloak-and-dagger scripts what Plan 9 From Outer Space was to SF.
A Criminal Intent episode had a “devout Christian” murder a high school drama director because she wanted his daughter to appear in – gasp – A Streetcar Named Desire! That’s right: devout Christians are murderous thugs who hate the plays of Tennessee Williams. This is how low L & O has fallen. They have also ridiculed Orthodox Jews and compared them to crazy Moslems. There was one episode on SVU in which Christians stoned an adulterous woman to death. I thought that Moslems did that. I guess I was wrong. This serious and its various permutations, stinks to high heaven. Even Michael Moriarty has condemned its bias and its craziness. And let’s not forget the lousy, preachey scripts. Rene Balcer, its producer, as well as Mr. Wolf, are staunch Christian bashers.
The episode on SVU about the Pakistani girl who was murdered of course, had to show those evil JOOOOOOOOS menacing her at one point and one of the dopey detectives mentioned “another 9/11 killing” – except most of those were done on non-Moslems!
Prof. Glazov, Excellent article in defense of the Catholic Church, not only in Archbishop Dolan’s pasture, but for the Church and its members as a whole. Nobody’s denied the horrible things that happened. The Church has never approved it. Indeed it couldn’t if for no other than one simple — if you’ll pardon my paraphrasing of Jesus’ only admonishing pro-death penalty sentence in the Bible, “It’s better for him who harms one of my little ones that he falls into the ocean with a millstone around his neck” than to face Him on his respective Dies Irae, that “Day of Judgment.” We are all God’s children, but how many of His children lost their faith as a result of individual sins committed by perrveted men and cowardly clerics or laity who could’ve raised the roofs more often? We’ll be asking this for decades to come, not to mention doing what we can to help bring these victims back to embrace the essentials of their FAITH. That’s far different than embracing the establishment. Even the Pope understands that’s out of the question for many of these victims. And I thank you Prof. for distinguishing the difference between the corrupt officials and the Church as a whole. Yet, having said that, and while I agree with you and most of the other writers, that many L & O episodes pack a strong liberal message, the SVU shows have indeed portrayed these disreputable “honor killings” at least once to my memory. The SVU show could, for starters, find some newer actors and character roles similar to the ones portrayed by two of my longtime favorite television show detectives, Dennis Farina and the late Jerry Orbach.
Jamie, don’t hold your breath.
As a Protestant, I don’t necessarily feel compelled to defend the Roman Catholic Church.
However, the fact is that we all know about the pedophilia among Catholic priests decades ago. Its an old issue, and as far as I am aware, has been pretty much dealt with.
It isn’t exactly a new issue, so why would the topic even be of interest, other than to just “preach to the (liberal) choir” ???
I’ll admit that I always hated SVU, and most of the other PC “cop/legal” shows fobbed off on the American public by the MSM.
Bad scripts and mostly bad actors. I can’t say I have ever been able to stomach an entire episode of SVU, L&O, etc.
I find particularly unamusing, the episode where the Christians stone an adulterous woman. The writers obviously are not even the least bit informed of the Christian religion to write such drivel.
One of the most well-known stories in the New Testament is of the woman “caught in adultery” and of how Jesus condemned the ones who wanted to stone her.
In contrast, stoning is a common practice in many Moslem countries. But, as you suggest, Mainstream Media shows will never hint at this.
Christianity is an all too easy target.
(i) There was one ‘honor-killing’ episode where the brother murdered his sister. It was many years ago.
(ii) For me, the show is way too ‘creepy’. I do not enjoy real violence and the emotional ordeals endured by the characters are too creepy-violent for me. On the other hand, my wife LOVES all law and Order shows.
How come conservatives are such whiny pansies?!
Conservatives whine so much how Hollywood only portrays “liberal” viewpoints but somehow neglect to mention that what drives a show is how much money it will bring in. I mean I fail to see GE turning down great conservative scripts if they could draw an audience. Where are all the conservative screenwriters, directors, actors and how come they can’t put together a show that will draw ratings and advertisers? I mean besides Fox News. Instead you get travesties like An American Carol.
And how come the author does not know how to use google?
No wonder the GOP “Brain-trust” ran this country into the gutter.
And if you don’t like the show, don’t watch it. If so many “patriots” don’t watch it, the show will tank and you can be happy. Your boycotts tend to suck. How did Michelle Malkins boycott of Dunkin Donuts go again?
This is one of my favorite shows, but I hate when they do this kind of crap
As the saying goes “just shut up and sing”. I’m hoping this is just the NBC execs and producers pushing their agenda, and not the actors.
As a reasonably intelligent person, I understand that this is a T.V show and not to be taken seriously. I hope others take it the same way
