Ibn Khaldun (d. 1406) — jurist, renowned philosopher, historian, and sociologist — summarized these consensus opinions from five centuries of prior Muslim jurisprudence with regard to the uniquely Islamic institution of jihad: 28
In the Muslim community, the holy war is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the [Muslim] mission and [the obligation to] convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force. … The other religious groups did not have a universal mission, and the holy war was not a religious duty for them, save only for purposes of defense. … Islam is under obligation to gain power over other nations.
Shi’ite jurisprudence was in agreement with the Sunni consensus on the basic nature of jihad war, as reflected in this excerpt from the Jami-i-Abbasi (the popular Persian manual of Shi’a law) written by al-Amili (d. 1622), a distinguished theologian under Shah Abbas I: 29
Islamic Holy war [jihad] against followers of other religions, such as Jews, is required unless they convert to Islam or pay the poll tax.
The essential pattern of the jihad war is captured in the classical Muslim historian al-Tabari’ s recording of the recommendation given by Umar b. al-Khattab (the second “Rightly Guided Caliph”) to the commander of the troops he sent to al-Basrah (636 C.E.) during the conquest of Iraq. Umar reportedly said: 30
Summon the people to God; those who respond to your call, accept it from them, but those who refuse must pay the poll tax out of humiliation and lowliness. (Koran 9:29) If they refuse this, it is the sword without leniency.
By the time of al-Tabari’s death in 923, jihad wars had expanded the Muslim empire from Portugal to the Indian subcontinent. Subsequent Muslim conquests continued in Asia as well as Eastern Europe. Under the banner of jihad, the Christian kingdoms of Armenia, Byzantium, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Croatia, and Albania, in addition to parts of Poland and Hungary, were also conquered and Islamized by waves of Seljuk, or later Ottoman Turks, as well as Tatars. Arab Muslim invaders additionally engaged in continuous jihad raids that ravaged and enslaved Sub-Saharan African animist populations, extending to the southern Sudan. When the Ottoman Muslim armies were stopped at the gates of Vienna in 1683, over a millennium of jihad had transpired. These tremendous military successes spawned a triumphalist jihad literature. Muslim historians recorded in detail the number of infidels slaughtered, or enslaved and deported; the cities, villages, and infidel religious sites which were sacked and pillaged; and the lands, treasure, and movable goods seized. 31
Ayatollah Khomeini’s 1942 speech, “Islam Is Not a Religion of Pacifists,” is a modern vision of these classical formulations, which states plainly (emphasis mine): 32
Those who study jihad will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world. All the countries conquered by Islam or to be conquered in the future will be marked for everlasting salvation. For they shall live under [Allah’s law; the Sharia]. … Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured by [the unbelievers]? Islam says: Kill them [the non-Muslims], put them to the sword and scatter [their armies]. Does this mean sitting back until [non-Muslims] overcome us? Islam says: Kill in the service of Allah those who may want to kill you! Does this mean that we should surrender [to the enemy]? Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the sword! The sword is the key to paradise, which can be opened only for holy warriors! There are hundreds of other [Koranic] psalms and hadiths [sayings of the prophet] urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all that mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.
Khomeini’s Iran has indeed embraced jihad “as a central pillar of faith and action,” demonstrated notably by the unending campaign of vilification and proxy violence against the “Zionist entity,” Israel. 33 This struggle epitomized what Khomeini’s Iran viewed as its “sacred struggle to cleanse the region and the world of Muslim and non-Muslim infidel blasphemy.” 34

It is PRECISELY due to all the excruciating, detailed truths pointed out by Andrew, that rational people can only conclude – Israel has NO choice but to pre-empt.
MAD can only work between RATIONAL actors. Surely, NO cogent person can surmise that Islamic eschatology fits such a paradigm.
While the notion of waking up in the near future to an Israeli pre-emption is a very frightening prospect, it is INFINITELY more frightening to wake up to Iran’s announcement that it joined the ‘nuclear club’.

Andrew G. Bostom is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Brown University Medical School. He apparently possesses no credentials in Islamic studies. His efforts are likely a labor of love—and financially unrewarding. And yet, I’m sure Dr. Bostom is incredibly knowledgeable. He is a harsh reminder that perhaps the majority of the so-called experts in this area of study are postmodernist radicals. Those who are actually getting amply compensated are not worthy of respect. We are presently compelled to consider soft science credentialed professionals as idiots until proven otherwise.

I can happen and will happen if the viscious regime in Tehran is permitted to finish their bomb program. They will probably achieve that goal within a year. Even if they do not immediately bomb Israel, the nuclear arms race (including Bio and Chemical weapons production) in the region will be very ugly. You can bet Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey will all immediately begin to develop similar weapons capabilities. They’ll have to in order to survive.
If the idea of Iraqi regional hegemony (under Saddam Hussein) was frightening, what about a region dominated by religious zealots who see nothing wrong with raining rockets (as well as suicide bombers) on civilian populations…?

Generally it is best to leave certain fields to experts. However, since 9/11/01 there has arisen a whole cadre of self taught experts in the field of Islamic history, politics and its intersection with their core religious doctrine.
When a people are dragged into a war no one should be surprised how quickly they learn their lessons. They do not have to sit in a classroom to read and comprehend core books, especially those who are as educated as Andrew.
Home schoolers,are often better educated than those who attended traditional schools.Therefore, the ‘expert’ argument falls flat in many instances.

Let’s take a look at the balance of which religion, Christianity or Islam, has done more harm to the other over the course of history.
Christians committed the following against Muslims:
1. Held a small piece of land (considered Christian’s holiest) in Israel on and off for 150 years total?
2. Held Iraq between WWI and WWII.
3. Held modern-day Pakistan and the Suez Canal for 200 years?
4. Most of N. Africa for fifty years?
These infractions against Islam by Christians for the most part ended fifty years ago. However, Spain continues to hold the Canary Islands and two dirt lots in Morocco.
And now the infractions by Muslims against Christians:
1. Muslims invaded and then lorded over most of Christian Spain and Portugal for five centuries.
2. Until 1918, Ottoman Muslims ruled over most of the historically Christian Balkans for hundreds of years.
3. Four hundred years ago Muslims conquered and continue to hold Eastern Christendom’s holiest city: Constantinople (now named Istanbul). A city which sits on historically Christian European land.
4. For centuries, Muslims raided European coastal regions and–by piracy–terrorized the Mediterranean Sea up to the 20th Century.
5. Muslims enslaved an estimated FOUR MILLION European Christians while they had the ability.

According to Robert Davis between 1 million and 1.25 million Europeans were captured by Barbary pirates, who were vassals of the Ottoman Empire, and sold as slaves between the 16th and 19th centuries.[13][14] These slaves were captured mainly from seaside villages from Italy, Spain, Portugal and also from more distant places like France or England, the Netherlands, Ireland and even Iceland and North America. The impact of these attacks was devastating – France, England, and Spain each lost thousands of ships, and long stretches of the Spanish and Italian coasts were almost completely abandoned by their inhabitants. Add in the slavery of Eastern Europeans and the estimated number or Christian slaves soar to four million plus.
6. Starting in 1915, Muslim Turks killed an estimated one to 1.5 million Armenian Christians.

Massacres were indiscriminate of age or gender, with rape and other sexual abuse commonplace. The Armenian Genocide is the second most-studied case of genocide after the Holocaust.[11]”
Now, this is probably not an all-inclusive list (I’m sure many additional crimes on both sides of the religious spectrum could be added). Nor do I write this as a call of “Let’s get ‘em!” but rather to point out that the next time you hear someone talk about the horrible crusaders and “Islam-as-victim” prattle, these are a few points you may want to bring up.

I no longer hold much respect for soft science experts.
First: Because these disciplines tend to perverted by ideology.
Second: Because some of them (ag psychology) are more about regurgitating the guru’s rambling than about oberving reality.
Third: Because they tend to exmpthize with the subject of their study (eg: No, the Aztecs weren’t good guys and despite some achievements in some areas the fact is that globally they were lagging a couple millena behind the Europeans).
Also expertise in soft science is relatively easy to adquire respective to say mathematics so it is not unheard that self-learned people end doing better than people trained in the academia (and victims of the teaching of some Chomsky disciple). Victor Davs Hanson is an example. Also the best books about the Russian front in WWII I have ever read have been written by… a former captain of merchant ships.

The Canary islands were never Muslim. There had been a little trade between the original inhabitants and Morocco but that it is all. When the Spanirds landed on them there was not a single mosque on the islands.

ISLAM will be defeated by an unrelenting fight for freedom of speech around the world (it is sorely lacking in Europe & the main stream media in the US), a cold war strategy to tear it apart at the seams with 24/7/365 broadcasts in native languages in India, Africa & SE Asia designed to dismantle the ideology just as the West dismantled Communism and a tit-for-tat military response – they blow a plan out of the sky, we drop a few cruise missiles on government buildings and key economic/military facilities, they mob a hindu temple or a church & burn it to the ground, we burn a mosque to the ground. ISLAM gets away with the thuggish behavior because they do not fear retribution. That needs to change. Being a Muslim who supports jihad should be a very dangerous past time.
