As the inane ad hominem arguments displayed here by trolls only serve to emphasize, Mary Grabar has once again hit the mark perfectly. Very nice indeed!

It should be apparent by now to any thinking person that the administration of President Obama is bent on (1) cementing itself in power; (2)creating a society in which individual wealth is destroyed (except for the politically favored); and (3) bent on accomodating the likes of Chavez, Ahmadinejad and his boss Khameni to the detriment of United States of America whose constituion the President is sworn to defend and uphold. He has no sense of the consequences of his actions. His recent speeches in support of the so called "health care bill" were and are not presidential. "Trust me" he says, "I won't sign any bill which will raise your taxes." The problems being created by the President and the congressional Democrat majority are quite threatening to the safety and well being of the people of this country and what is worse, they seem ignorant of what they are in reality doing.

By the way guys, since I remember you praising Che, Castro, Mugabe, Guevara, and you kind of know all the community activists across the country - how do you rate as as political preparadness Stalin Felipe (one of the Hofstra U community activists)?
Probably well - oppression! Bill Ayres, Jane Fonda, Van Jones, Mike Nifong, Kayne, Stalin Felipe!
Poor Stalin! Poor Stalin! The Long island police acted so stupidly! What acts can oppression push a nice community activists like Stalin do!

Sure Eric Holder is 500% behind Stalin, too - time to talk race again -

@122. Albert: - university students have more freedom, and freedom of expression than the occupants of almost any other institution in society.

...as long as they conform to the speech codes, don't utter anything to which someone else might take offense, don't read the "wrong" books, don't invite Ann Coulter, Dan Pipes or representatives of The Minutemen to speak on campus, sure, they have all the "freedom of expression" in the world.

What solar system did you say you're from again?

Re #122/ Albert: [...] how to reconcile the images of university students as prisoners, and asylum inmates with the reality that university students have more freedom, and freedom of expression than [...]

Still wiggling, ACORN worm Albert? What you can't comprehend it's been for long and correctly described as "mental chains" - no matter how "free" one dresses or moves around, etc. "mental chains" make one a slave more than iron chaines.

"Die Gedanken sind frei!" remember?, or Sojenytzin's musings on the fredom he sometimes felt while locked in Goulag are common illustrations of mind's ability to defeat physical coercion - yet at the opposite end of this achievement looms the mental slavery in which the liberal plantations' (read: universities) slaves (i.e. students) wallow.

Mental chains: political correctness, non-judgementalism, cultural relativism, all designed and successfully inflicted upon immature folks to keep them in slavery - freedom of expression as vulgarity, foul language, promiscuity, fashion, etc. are just Saturnalia swill thrown to some drunken slaves by contemptuous liberal masters. And there isn't a better illustration of today's college students than the slaves in Plato's cave, held there by mental chains.

By the way, your ACORN thing took another hit one hour ago, check the news - you really need the "freeing" power of a crack shot on the taxpayers' expense.

116, 120

The metaphors for university students is now becoming so mixed that we might need the help of an 'almost' university English professor like Mary Grabar (you know - the kind of prof that can't get a full time job) to straighten this all out. Mary, perhaps you can tutor your charges here about how to reconcile the images of university students as prisoners, and asylum inmates with the reality that university students have more freedom, and freedom of expression than the occupants of almost any other institution in society.

RE #117/ Albert: [...] So…university students are the metaphorical equivalent of inmates, are they?..a fine view of education [...]

Albert, correction vis-a-vis the university students/ jail inmates analogy: the correct description for most contemporary American universities is "liberal plantations" - and in case the crowl/crawl issue still confuses you, follow the instruction: "Now CREEP under your ACORN rock!"

Yes. Specifically, the ones running the asylum.
