We have hardwood forests here. That’s quite a bit different from what exists in most of the rest of the country. Cat 1 is plenty enough to knock down a bunch of trees, which will take power lines down with them. We get plenty of outages from storms that DON’T make the news, much less “the biggest storm to hit the East Coast in 100 years” (according to NOAA).
This past summer we had a fairly strong storm come in, and I was picking up one of my boys from a Scout meeting. We attempted to go home the usual way, and it was Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, dodging fallen and fallING trees and branches and wild pounding rain. It was like something out of a movie. We finally had to turn back because a tree had fallen all the way across the road, and was lying on a power line. We got home about 90 minutes later than usual due to the large detour I had to take, and I wasn’t at all sure of even being able to get home.
THAT was an ordinary storm. On the strong side of ordinary, but still, not newsworthy.
I’m fully expecting to miss a few days of work next week as the Shenandoah River rises and cuts off access to the roads out of my area.
If we DON’T lose power for a day or two I’ll be very surprised, and 3 or 4 days of no power would not surprise me at all.
All stores in the area are sold out of generators.
Also the terrain up in the northeast is hilly and there is bedrock close to the surface. Rain that does nothing but put an inch or two on the ground in the south will run downhill up here into narrow channels and very rapidly into rivers. These will burst the bank and cause tremendous damage. Gradients here make large parts of the South look like a pancake.
See what Irene did to Vermont. It wasn’t the wind or the rain per se, but granite channeling rain into raging torrents. Bridges don’t get flooded here, they get washed away. A Cat 1 can cause flood surges along even small water channels that matches a cat 3 or 4 storm surge on the south coast in terms of devastation on the path of the water.
Of course snow down south causes chaos when it falls in amounts that don’t even effect the commute up here. I guess when that happens next time MMD and his ilk will also have to GROW UP!

The weather across the world these last few years has me scared to death. Not so much for myself, but for children, and women.
