How Liberals Become Cover Girls in the Capitalist System They Oppose
A 2011 Gallup poll found that 40% of Americans consider themselves conservative and only 21% consider themselves liberal. So why does the advertising community — a.k.a Madison Avenue — and their clients continue to hire outspoken liberals for their advertising campaigns?
I recently lost two very big advertising campaigns (add those to the many others) because I am a conservative. The advertisers actually stated this. Ironically, the more I speak out about the non-partisan values of our United States Constitution and the necessities of a free-market system to keep businesses thriving, the more ad campaigns (whose goal it is to promote their businesses) I lose.
While I was waiting outside an office the other day, I picked up a magazine. On the back was an outspoken liberal actress in an ad for a cosmetic cream. It happened to be the same company that was contemplating hiring me until it discovered I was a conservative. I sighed. As I continued to flip through the magazine I saw another liberal activist actress who was recently spotted leading chants at Occupy Wall Street events. She was in an ad for a wholesome drink. Are Occupy Wall Street events wholesome (defecation, urination, public acts of sex, rape, drugs, violence)?
As I returned home and turned on the television, it was more of the same. I was barraged with liberal thought and actions in the sitcoms, dramas, and reality shows. I received no reprieve during commercial breaks. I saw hair flipping around in a hair color ad by an actress who recently held a fundraiser for Obama in her home and did a pro-Obama PSA. Would an actress who was pro-Bush or is pro-Romney get this same opportunity?
Before I could blink, the next commercial flashed more outspoken liberal actors. Liberals are the ones who rant against Wall Street, big business, and banks. Yet liberals are the ones doing ads for — you guessed it — Wall Street, big business, and banks — those money-making entities that liberals say are so evil.
Question: Would any of these liberal actors be doing the cosmetic, hair, credit card, and drink ads for free? You can bet not. They have big-time agents negotiating big-time deals that pay them millions. To quote Peter Roff, the businesses are being persuaded by liberal advertising companies “to feed the hand that bites them.”
Where is the reason in all this?

The country is split roughly evenly liberal / conservative..that has reflected itself in national elections which is best barometer available.
If a conservative company wants to hire a liberal the logic is simple; they are trying to attract customers they don’t already have. A liberal company will do the same. They are trying to sell a product, not make political statement.
Cheryl Ladd, Heather Locklear, Jessica Simpson, Kathy Ireland, Jaclyn Smith, Angie Harmon, there is no shortage of conservative actresses in marketing campaigns and advertisements. When a company’s marketing group decides a particular actress will sell their product, politics has little bearing. In fact controversy is a good thing, free publicity is frosting on advertising budgets.
I disagree. Cheryl Ladd, Heather Locklear, Kathy Ireland and Jaclyn Smith. Angie Harmon has family connections. So that leaves Jessica Simpson who rose to fame as a child star and through gospel music. Can you move forward from the late 70′s and early 80′s and come up with more than a few names? It isn’t rocket science or a well kept secret that there is a blacklist against conservatives in Hollywood and the media. You conveniently fail to note that Janine mentioned she was actually told the reason why she did not get the job.
Ironically, the names that came to your mind to make your point actually made Janine’s point rather than your own.
“Cheryl Ladd, Heather Locklear, Kathy Ireland and Jaclyn Smith. Angie Harmon has family connections. ”
There are clearly some missing words or thoughts in what you’ve written. The first sentence I’ve cited has no verb, just a subject. What are you trying to say about these four women? And I’m not sure I get the point in the second sentence. Angie Harmon has family connections to what? How do those connections affect her political views?
Yes, Becky apparently has trouble speaking her mind. From reading many of your posts, I would say that you have trouble using your mind. ABO2012
Angie Harmon is married to Jason Sehorn, the last caucasian to play a down at cornerback in the NFL.
At USC Sehorn was considered a great athlete with lots of potential, but not a polished player. In the NFL he practiced hard to impove his technique. He also trained hard to get his get his lean muscle mass up, and his body fat down — similar to a black athlete.
After a couple of good seasons, including a superbowl victory he retired due to injuries. Sehorn stated that his retropect his NFL memories are not of his efforts to transcend his caucasian physiology, but of having a few beers with his teammates just enjoying the moment.
I heard Kathy Ireland talk about her family- blue collar union family, traditional union Democrats all.
Could this phenomena be unions (SAG, AFTRA) hiring union?
I’m from a staunch Democrat family, the sort that supplies the Democratic Party with the foot troops to go out and do stuff, legal and not.
I have not run into anyone similar for the Republican Party. I have been sent “surveys” for the Republican Party that read like sabatoge by liberals pretending to collect information for the Republican Party.
The country is half and half? I seriously doubt it. We already know that media saturation can pull the vote, the media says something like 4 points, I think it’s closer to 10. My family experience suggests that voter fraud is another 10 points. That would make the country 30/70.
“The country is split roughly evenly liberal / conservative..that has reflected itself in national elections which is best barometer available.”
Elections have always been considered “the only poll that matters”. They have never been confused with the best or most accurate polling.
Your experience Janine is lamentable and an indicative extension of Lamestream Media bias, power, and control of our society. It’s why we know more about Palin’s Wardrobe than we do about Obama’s dubious friends, associations, and eligibility.
It’s just blithe political correctness. PC doesn’t have a consciousness. You accepted a role in Northern Exposure about a strong, arguably feminist role model. I doubt if that was as important or premeditated in a larger sense as simply having an opportunity to work.
Generally speaking, actors probably just don’t care and when they get famous they Twitter the right PC Tweets about how they’re against child slavery and putting out the sun.
Whether real or not, the liberal narrative provides easier storylines about underdog vs. corporation, racism, etc. It is an analogue to the liberal political narrative where they create something to push back against in order to make drama to spark political activism.
The conservative version is “just leave me alone.” That’s not something you can write stories around. Sure, a clever satirist could get a lot more traction making fun of real liberals than dumb HBO shows about Mormons like “Big Love.”
It’s a hell of a lot more easy to make fun of Al Sharpton than Sarah Palin and Elizabeth Warren than an Ann Coulter analogue but liberal Hollywood doesn’t want to go there.
If fact, if the writers Jon Stewart has ever set their sights on thinly disguised liberal political figures and did an HBO mini-series it would be devastating. But there’s no will and so no way.
Go see the movie “Ghostbusters” again.
In that movie, the Environmental Protection Agency official was the villain! His interference with the Ghostbusters’ business caused a disaster. Eventually the mayor realized it and got rid of him.
The movie had a pretty libertarian theme: A smart bunch of guys quit college and go into business for themselves. They struggle but eventually hit it big–despite bureaucratic interference from the EPA.
And the movie “The Incredibles” could have been written by Ayn Rand. There, the villain was the mediocrity of the mob, trying to pull down superheroes to their own level.
What you will never get from Hollywood are movies with *socially* conservative themes. So many folks there are gay that as long as social conservatives are opposed to gay marriage, Hollywood will view social conservatives as the enemy.
It’s not playing in any theaters.
Think Netflix.
I was kidding. I’ve seen it 20 times. I thought it was understood we’re taking in generalities – there’s plenty of exceptions to the rule.
The irony is that Northern Exposure itself was a series that was part of a trend where all stereotypes within reach were turned on their head and examined. That’s fine as satire, but now it has ceased to be satire and simply accepted as reality in America.
In that new reality Somalis would build space stations if only taken out from the aftereffects of colonialism and if you put them on a flight to the U.S this will certainly occur. When it doesn’t more reasons are created why a Third World stereotype must transform and match the upside-down world of satire of Northern Exposure, and those reasons are mostly said to be white privilege if not outright racism.
So, America now lives in a world that doesn’t exist and so liberalism can be said to exist on faith every bit as much as a religion does. Northern Exposure and endless depictions like it on film and TV exist nowhere in reality – it is what happens when a media saturated culture starts to believe its own bulls–t.
Stereotypes don’t come from nowhere – you can put up all the scruffy CIA agents and genius native Americans you want and say exception equals rule and if you act on it, like we actually do, you’ll destroy a culture by social engineering designed to produce that uplift effect.
So the TV show in America today goes somewhat like this: whites are racists who keep minorities down and the solution is to have fewer whites and introduce non-racists from other cultures who will gives us the diversity and crucial perception of the world that will show the value of colorblindness. How they will do this by forming racial lobbies unconcerned with the greater good is never explained.
If an individual or company crosses an invisible economic line, morality fails and must be brought to account by heavy taxation and OWS protesters who will take a crap in your park to bring you to your senses. How feces and broken windows will achieve this is never explained.
Woman and gays are wise beyond the abilities of straight white males to attain to and must be shoe-horned in wherever possible to achieve wisdom and harmony. They have cornered the market on being oppressed and bullied and will share this innate sense of justice if you’ll only listen hard enough. How this will be achieved by destroying the institution of marriage is never explained. However it is implicit in the Oprahization of America that the perfect “man” is a woman with male genitalia.
Liberals don’t see this as a political position or ideology but as self-evident reality, though a look at any map, history book, prison or army unit will depict the complete opposite reality. This why a British woman can blunder into Tahrir Square at night during a celebration of the Muslim Brotherhood winning to the Presidency and express surprise she was set upon when asking questions of total strangers in a crowd perhaps 90% male that suggest the male citizens of Egypt are Muslim a–holes.
Lacking a 911 operator system set up by non-exceptionalist white a–hole males back home or an armored all-female division of shock troops to protect her, or the innate civilizing influence of genius Egyptians that run counter to stereotypes, reality came visiting in the form of a severe beating. Since her faith is still undeterred, said moron will commit suicide by completing her “Egyptian Men Are A–Holes Compared to Me” documentary.
I never watched Northern Exposure. I have managed to avoid most of the other rather vacuous fare that passes for mainstream network TV these days. I hate PC with a passion. It’s all I can do to watch Fox News.
NCIS. That’s what I consider to be a decent show from the current crop (there’s also Survivor but that’s not at all rational….I think it’s the challenges….they are addicting).
Beyond that it’s pretty much movies, movies & more movies. No small wonder Netflix is doing so well.
There is a great deal of truth in your sarcastic and cynical postings and responses, on many different levels. As this week’s monstrous USSC ruling has shown to us all in a stark manner, we live in an age of gross self-delusion and suicidal asininity.
If you’ll forgive me for saying so, most actresses are in their profession because they crave approval. So if a journalist asks an actress whether she is for or against “cruelty, oppression and the extermination of the human race through corporate greed” she will generally come down in the against column.
If another journalist asked whether she believed in “freedom, democracy and the right to determine your own destiny through hard work” she would heartily support all of those. It is the journalists who are setting the agenda, not the actresses.
Businesses hate controversy of any kind, regardless of what kind it is.
If you find it hard to stomach that actresses like to be popular and that business people are timid you won’t enjoy working in advertising all that much.
I suspect ideolgy has trumped effective advertising. Same for blatantly liberal TV series. The more liberal the lower the quality.
I can’t help but second that motion. Especially when it comes to the universal male-bashing in TV commercials these days.
I find it hard to believe that your average company would willingly allow the ad agency they do business with to routinely nose-thumb half or more of their potential customer base. Either the entire Madison Avenue world is so completely dominated by Libs/Gays/Feminazis that there are no alternatives or your average corporation allows themselves into being buffaloed by ad agencies that should be competing for their business.
That is, unless you are advertising your product or service on the NASCAR, Military, or Huntin’ n Killin’ channel…
You are right, Janine.
It’s time (way past time) to make the public more – aware – of what’s being done and pedaled to them.
If more people understood that conservative actors in commercials were being shunned — and liberal ones chosen for that reason — there would be a backlash that might change things.
How can they be made more aware of all this?
I think this is so because most ads are geared towards young people and Madison Avenue usually thinks that most young people are liberals. So, if you’re trying to sell sneakers to a kid, have a liberal spokesperson do the shilling for you. Madision Avenue doesn’t care, as long as it sells sneakers. For the Fifty-and-over crowd, I don’t think they are swayed by liberals in advertising. In fact, they would prbably be put off by liberal spokemen for large companies. I’ll also bet you if you had conservative spokesmen for commercials geared to more mature audiences, they would probably do very well. I guess it all has to do with the demographics you’re going after. I also wonder if you could have more conservative spokesmen in commercials for different parts of the country? Would a commercial by Anna Wintour do as well in Texas as in New York? Well, you get the idea.
Good point. Pay attention to the products that are advertised with liberal spokespersons and imagine what customer profile they are aiming to attract – it is not me.
Good topic Janine and I, for one, are glad you brought the subject up. You are right, most Americans don’t know the politics of the people in advertising and show business. I think the internet is changing that.
Why do those who are conservative not use their buying power to support conservative, principled companies and businesses?
Its not the split. Its the war. No has put it better than Janine Turner herself. Americans who identify themselves as conservative will buy products being advertised by Liberals, but Americans who consider themselves liberal will not buy products sold to them by Conservatives.
In other words, it is likely the Advertisers know this and their actions are a reflection of this. They had better not hire a star identified as conservative to sell their products as a large piece of the market won’t buy the product if they do. Whereas if they hire a Liberal star no part of the market drops out for political reason.
Viciousness is built into the Liberal Mind. I remember a diner with a real dedicated Liberal and the issue of smoking came up. She had once been a smoker and gave it up. I still smoke. In talking about various restrictions she said I had to understand I had the offending habit.
This from a person who had, at that point, 6 abortions. I want to clear about this – I am not talking hypocrisy or double standards here. I am linking such a blatant comment to the degree of the person’s liberalism.
I am talking mannerisms here. Very few people, even most liberals, would never think that the significance someone’s smoking is an offending habit. Just as I think the significance of abortion is that most women who have an abortion have one only.
I use the six she had as a barometer showing the degree of her Liberal advocacy. Example fro Liberals abound. Alice Walker has recently announced she is preventing her book, the Color Purple, from being translated into Hebrew – at least by her publisher.
Then there are the SWAT dirty tricks. You do understand the people who perpetrate these SWAT calls are hoping that the police will kill the bloggers in the ensuing confrontation.
agreed …there is no split. the liberals are in a minority but they sure do scream like they are the majority.
conservatives are tolerant (to a point) liberals are not …EVER!
Why does everyone here continue to call fascists, liberals? Geez, after what we have been through these past four years and most recently, I would hope that you ALL see that the Dem party is no longer liberal but totalitarian fascist.
For us to win our nation back, at least from the start let’s understand who we are fighting: Fascists.
Funny how it’s always the “Loving”, “Tolerant”, “Peaceful” Progressive Leftists who are always the ones screaming for and demanding the deaths of those who don’t agree with them…
Politics IS marketing. They are all of them actors upon a stage.
Thank you J. Turner for pointing out another crucial chokepoint.
Licensing thru university is another.
Tax exempt corporations (unions, foundations, trusts, nonprofits) are more.
I note that liberals have a whole industry of tax evasion and money laundering.
(and thanks Fail Burton- always so well informed- Ms. Turner is the tough, resiliant pilot from Northern Exposure!? Way cool.)
Not sure about the conspiracy. It might simply be human nature: greed, hypocrisy, and cognitive dissonance. Maybe holding the correct beliefs, having the correct feelings, saying the correct words, making the correct gestures buys one special dispensation in liberal circles. One may live like an elite, money-grubbing capitalist pig…but at least one’s heart is in the right place. And all that money-grubbing means cash to spare for a good cause – money that real, hard-core liberals are always willing to put to good use.
The struggle has always been about the culture, an obvious truth that conservatives can’t seem to get their brains around.
Conservatives have been very good at grumbling from the sidelines at the blatant Left-wing, anti-American, sex-driven values that permeate our media-dominated culture today, but still think they only have to win the next election for everything to somehow Right itself. Really? Is that what happened during the Reagan years? The Left made significant inroads into all areas of our culture during the 80s, while conservatives opted for cultural passivity, reassuring themselves that with Reagan in the White House all was well with the world.
As long as the conservative approach to culture is, as another commenter wrote, ‘just leave me alone’ then the struggle for our great republic is pretty much lost. Conservatives have vacated the cultural stage, whimping-off with nary a struggle.
You would think that at this point in all the conservative ‘Take Back America’ hoopla that there would be an organization that Ms. Turner could have gone to seeking support for the discrimination she faces in earning her living. Where is the conservative version of the Human Rights Campaign? Without the cultural infrastructure, conservatives won’t be taking back America any time soon.
And by the way, not all gays and lesbians are Left-wing, gay marriage foam-at-the-mouthers. Many of us do care about our country and the survival of our republic and put that first and foremost.
And yet the problem you face is the “identity traitor” backlash (and calls for violence) from the hardcore activists.
I get it on multiple levels due to my background, which I’m not going to get into here.
“There is nothing wrong with liberals being hired to do commercials, but there is something wrong with conservatives not being hired because they are conservatives.”
No, there is nothing wrong with it at all. The opposition is taking steps you are unwilling to take. In short, they are not wiling to feed and fund the enemy.
Whenever possible I avoid hiring freelancers who hold liberal views. And I don’t buy Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. If I do, I know they will use the money I paid them to fund liberal political campaigns and causes.
Everyone needs to wake up and realize that we are in a war for the heart and soul of our country. Stop feeding and funding our enemies.
Janine, you are absolutely correct.
NOBODY in my businessworld knows that I am cfbleachers.
I like my quiet little suburban private life. Therefore, by my own analysis and by my own pen/sword…I am a coward.
Patricia Heaton does some grocery store ads. But conservative men and women do NOT get asked to do Capital One commercials…those go to one of the vilest human beings on the leftist landscape. A bully, tyrant, “push people around” type of guy…including his own daughter. Nice, huh? However, a perfect poster child for the tyranny of the this administration and the Fabian Socialists…hiding behind a smiling veneer.
The ad agencies are filled with fellow travelers, comrades with the entertainment wing of runaway leftism. They feed from the capitalist trough, but deny its underpinnings…ridiculing red states and their people is a bloodsport in these halls of small c communism. Hypocritical? Yep…in spades.
Post-modern limousine liberals are now the “Bling and Blame” crowd. (OWS are not small c communists as are the Ayers/Obama/Pelosi types, they are the regular old non-bathing, hammer and sickle brand…they are actually more honest, if less perfumed, than their Fabian Socialist cousins)
The adfellows are pitching the low information, Oprah/Kardashian viewer, who find Will Ferrell and Bill Maher amusing, think 30 Rock is great TV, and would never be caught dead at a Republican get together.
Being conservative, Judeo-Christian faith-based and white, or Republican…is not cool in the ad world. Leftists have pushed that meme for over four decades and it has stuck. Ads need to be cool, even when they are retro or a complete parody, they need to have an aura of cool. You are on the wrong side of that meme. In Hollywood, in TV, in music, in comedy, in academia, in the mass news outlets…and…in all the places that we “water cooler” our opinions based upon mass communication outlets.
That’s why we have to dominate new media and push technology advertising. It’s our only way to even up the four decade old propaganda, distortion and lies disadvantage.
cfbleachers -
You have an opportunity now. You are here, and there are certainly other conservative outlets in which you can express yourself. I encourage you to continue doing that. All you can do is speak out, vote against the Democrats in the fall, and one other thing.
Like Rush Limbaugh encourages other people, try to break free from your current situation. Start your own ad business; do something to increase your own self-reliance and the self-reliance of your family. Be an entrepreneur. Because only you can begin to save liberty; each of us, one step at a time, must do our bit in our own way. If that means taking on the lefties in these blogs, so be it. If it means running your own business, so be it. But this is where it starts.
You are NOT a coward. That designation goes to John Roberts for his craven and cowardly opinion on Obamacare. He had the power to change things, and he didn’ t use it.
“That designation goes to John Roberts for his craven and cowardly opinion on Obamacare. He had the power to change things, and he didn’ t use it.”
Boy, how you need to take some time to think that one through. Just watch how it’s likely to go down for the ACA (post inauguration next year), Obama & the Democrats in this upcoming fall’s election.
Roberts is not a coward for not doing what I wanted him to do. He is a coward for failing to do what was clearly his duty. He was so intimidated by Obama that his sole motivation was to avoid a confrontation, without regard to a basic understanding of the constitution.
Have you ever been threatened? I have not. But this does not keep me from empathizing with someone who has or very likely has been so threatened. I think Roberts deserves some slack in this area. That’s right, I don’t put a thing past this administration; you should not either.
bobbcat: Of course I have been threatened. I don’t know what kind of work you have done but threats, attempted intimidation and physical assaults are things I have dealt with in my life. So what? Isn’t that what this article by Janine Turner is about?
I think it a stretch, a long stretch to imply that Roberts suffered any physical threat. He was intimidated, in my opinion, by Obama and liberal media. In the end it came down to this, he wrote a bad opinion to achieve a political goal. And it was quite craven.
The nation is indeed split down the middle. Elections are razor thin as are Supreme Court rulings. While 21% of college educated traitors call themselves screaming liberals, the remaining vote like their fathers: Democrats for life. Confused souls supporting the party of Marx and not Kennedy. They’ve doomed us all. The Hollywood sewer pipe ends in our living rooms and families wade in filth. Public schools graduated Onanist nimrods raised by selfish baby boomers. Do the math. Understand that Democrats dominate Hollywood because they built it. They’ve held onto it. Yankee carpetbaggers risked their fortunes, not Red, White & Blue patriots fighting the good fight. Maggie O’Connell was a realistic character, not some woman where a woman didn’t belong. She and Sarah Palin grabbed life by the horns and didn’t ask permission. Comparing Northern Exposure to today’s politically correct tripe is unacceptable. Dumbness and animated excrement define America’s prime time. The people are sick puppies and it’s getting worse by the minute. It’s hard to read some of my nephew’s Facebook postings. His friends (including girls) are disgusting. All are middle class whites raised on porn and thug rap. For those few individuals removed from the social war, know the front lines are collapsing. The plebs are eating themselves alive. Our nation’s foundation is rotten and smells of sex.
Janine, I have loved you for years, ever since Northern Exposure. It is a travesty to see that you are not getting work from the Hollywood/Madison Avenue media because you are too conservative for them. These folks should pay dearly for their sins in the afterlife.
Tell me about it!
Circa 1993 I was all set to believe Janine Turner was all set to take Hollywood by storm and start eating Julia Roberts’ lunch. But she suddenly became a C-lister. It wasn’t until years later that I found out why.
I recall hearing that Shannen Doherty is also a conservative. Around the same time, in the early nineties, I thought she was also all set to become a marquee goddess. Instead, she suddenly was having her name trashed all over the Hollywood gossip sheets as an unreliable, tantrum-throwing primma donna whom nobody could stand to work with. “Heathers” marked her high point although she did make her mark on prime time with “Charmed” she was dumped after the first few seasons. Again, much later I learned the real reason.
There is nothing inherent in liberal philosophy that says that liberals must be against capitalism or the the fruits of capitalism. Capitalism in fact may be the liberal’s best friend, providing him with the cash and free time to satisfy his many appetites and pursue his Cause du Jour. Modern liberalism, however, has been systematically subverted by the Marxist left, and it’s now hard to tell the difference between a hard-core socialist and a mainstream Democrat.
A pet theory of mine is that Hollywood represents capitalism at its reddest in tooth and claw. Anybody who succeeds there has done much to be ashamed of (I may be exaggerating a bit). Furthermore, so many people there can succeed at phenomenally young ages so they develop the so-called “imposter complex” and are burdened with guilt. In addition, thanks to the noble sacrifice of the Two Coreys (Haim and Feldman) we now know that Hollywood is rotten with pedophiles and most stars who began their careers very young have been repeatedly molested (as opposed to those who started their careers merely “young” in which case it’s called the “casting couch”) and you’re left with some pretty twisted psyches. Toss in; immaturity, ignorance and egomania and you have the perfect recipe for someone wanting to buy their way into heaven on the quick and cheap.
What better a way to do that (and further one’s career into the bargain) than to mindlessly embrace all the politically-correct causes and mouth all the politically-correct rhetoric?
Hollywood represents capitalism? I disagree. But maybe you can explain how to reconcile Hollywood cronism and its casting couches with capitalism. Or try again.
I like the capitalist system, always did. Or at least, I like the free enterprise system. Starting to have lingering suspicions that banksterism is not the same thing as free enterprise but many a tea partier seems to have the same concerns.
Exleftist: I am not so sure that the country is really split down the wire. I think that the two major parties have created coalitions of people who do not fundametally belong together. thats why elections can rock back and forth. that is why we can elect an Obama and he will say ‘at last Americans have realized communism is the answer’ or we could have elected a McCain and he would have thought ‘at last Americans believe that an infinite number of foreign wars is the answer’. We never believed in either position. The people are for wars in self defence, and for freedom and justice at home.
@john: The nation is a patchwork crammed into two parities, but only numbers matter. We see razor thin margins in almost every election. Today 4-5% is a landslide. The coming demographic shift will see this margin erased for Republicans. Their years of bowing to Democratic demands and lowered standards had a steep price. The Left may win the war but shall not inherit the earth. The Americans will destroy everything fighting it out. Too much is at stake. People work too hard to simply give up. The Left wants everything we have – our money, our land, our guns and our children. They can’t have it and one day it’ll come to a head.
I have to make my crank post about mixing up liberalism with socialism. Words are important. Calling the old GDR (German Democratic Republic) a democratic republic didn’t make it one and it did not suddenly paint republicans with the brush of blood soaked totalitarianisms.
More importantly, calling things by their right names conveys more information than using a loosley understood smear word. For example if someone calls me a Nazi nowdays it can mean I am percieved to favor human liberty or it could conversely mean I am perceived to be a so called constitutional fetishist. SO the word has no meaning except to a small group of people.
Ms. Turner, if you haven’t seen it in awhile, or have never seen it, the answer is in a video featuring Yuri Bezmenov, Soviet defector:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3qkf3bajd4
The American population is split pretty evenly right now, concerning Conservatives, and Liberals. So, I can’t agree with you there Janine, but I CAN agree that being Conservative, hurts spokesmodels, and actresses, of every sort. Having grown up in Hollywood, I had to ask myself, honestly. Why? There IS truth to what you are saying. I did not know that models, like yourself, were being outright told that politics were an issue, but I had noticed that some actresses that I had liked, like yourself (I LOVED Northern Exposure) had seen a career downturn after being identified as Conservative, in a high profile situation. I do not know if it is merely perception, or what, but it does seem that I see less of Hillary Duff, for instance, after she made appearances for George Walker Bush. It might be good career advice to future young ladies that want to do well, and succeed in the business. Stay clear of poliitcs, or at least lean where your career is more likely to succeed.
If you build it, they will come. If some enterprising person created a site that listed (exposed) the more Liberal companies, authors (like Steven King lamenting how he “hates” Conservatives), actors, anyone or thing dependent upon the earning their living via paying customers, they will come. Now the time is ripe for this type of activism. Verifiable links being submitted and left up to the accused to either defend themselves or let us decide by their inaction. Do you want to buy from someone who despises you? We will know them, they will not know us.
Donny Deutch came out of the advertising industry. My guess is that he is somewhat representative of that industry.
1) Abie’s Irish Rose 1928
2) George Burns & Gracie Allen Show (1950-58)
3) Bridget Loves Bernie (1972-73)
4) Northern Exposure (1990-95)
Every generation has had enjoyed a Jewish-Irish romantic series?
Somewhere in the bowels of Hollywood there must be an enterprising young Harvard graduate looking to put a modern twist on an old idea.
Ask the people that claim to be “conservative” and you might find that what they think is conservative is is not really conservative at all. Ask them to define “conservative”.
It’s obvious the progressives are winning the battle. I also think that when they succeed turning the US in to a Marxist trash heap like Russia or China, they will still be convinced it’s Utopia. After all that’s what they think they’re creating and they can’t possibly be wrong now can they?
C’mon, if Alec Baldwin can get work…..
What I find interesting of these liberal personalities in media supporting a socialist agenda ..is the fact that in a socialists society ..these people will not rein in millions of dollars for a movie. Think about a socialist country that has a multimillionaire celebrity. Exactly!
If all those people pulled back from companies because they are “too liberal” (as in, apparently hiring mostly or only politically “liberal” thinkers to advertise their wares) then would that not hurt “big business” and in turn our economy? You may aid in convincing these companies to change their sales tactics eventually (as in, hiring more or only politically “conservative” thinkers to advertise their wares) but that’s all that will be addressed… how they advertise.
The companies are mostly about their products and what they get for them (cash-money), not the agendas they claim to support or push in commercials; never mind those they allow in their commercials. Do you think Dove would still be pushing their “every woman is beautiful” line/agenda if it was more profitable for them to push an idea such as “she uses Dove and is prettier than you, so buy Dove to be prettier than that woman who doesn’t buy it”? Do you think Tiger Woods would have been dropped by all those sponsors had the controversy not played so big in the news media?
They do and use what sells. Right now, what they are doing must be working for them. I say go for it and work for change if you think it’s best. Be the change, draw those of like-minds to you and do it yourselves. Don’t just complain but rather *show* them what they are missing out on.
Best of luck to you and yours.
Its already beating massive odds being gainfully employed in Hollywood..the membership of SAG – AFTRA is over 150,000. Figure there is only a few hundred actors actually working regularly, 90% are working just enough to pay bills and working as waiters and hospitality services.
On the flip side of this, are there overwhelming amount of liberals employed in banking industry..? Does being tagged a Liberal affect employment in financial industry, or Petro-Chemicals industry..? I imagine not many tree huggers are working offshore drill platforms.
Difficult shouldn’t stop anyone, it should create resolve and drive. There are alternatives as well; big money for actors in overseas commercial work and foreign cinema. I live in Asia, the explosion in entertainment industry and pay is best kept secret in Hollywood.
Imagine what will happen when actors find these options and empower themselves.
Janine: You are an inspiration. There must be other conservatives in Hollywood that are afraid to make their views known for fear of blacklisting. You on the other hand show great integrity in standing up for solid, traditional American values and patriotism. These new age progressives claim to be fair and inclusive and yet their actions show them to be as discriminatory as the bigots they claim to detest. Thank you for everything that you do and everything that you represent.
Dear Janine, You are an inspiration and a loving Christian Lady. God bless you Janine! Thank you for all you do.
Ayn Rand said “It is eminently reasonable that men should seek to associate with those who share their convictions and values. It is impossible to deal or even to communicate with men whose ideas are fundamentally opposed to one’s own (and one should be free not to deal with them).”
The virtue of captitalism is competition then surely trading with like-minded capitalists is to be of greater value than to trade with those who seek to destroy it.
Every time I get a Capital One credit card junk mail I get a marker and in big wide letters I write “F*ck Alec Baldwin”. Then I mail it back in its pre-paid postage envelope. It makes me
.
I agree, i REFUSE to purchase any item associated with Left Wing liberals or watch their movies- F Baldwin,Clooney, Sex in City hoe & her husband
Liberal and conservative is about translation, be it language, words, or constitution. Liberal is to “read in” (eisegesus)! Conservative is to “read out” (exegesus). Liberals run on collective (gang) conscience! Conservatives run more on private conscience. We translate from our conscience! The nation shifted from self (God) conscience to collective (social) conscience in the 1960′s over the birth control battle. The April 1966 Times article “Is God Dead” was really asking “Is private self conscience” dead?
Liberals translate everything they hear or see from perspective of social consequence. Disagree with them an all hell breaks lose. Advertiser fear the wrath of those 30-40% mad-bull liberals who view Janine Turner as a red flag! Liberals provoke fear in their opponents! Like a mafia gang they are, their defense is fear and terror!
On liberal vs conservative transation, the opinion of Justice Roberts hinged on the translation of one just word PENALTY. Did he translate that with view of social consequence, or private conscience? Did he translate PENALTY as personal punishment, or as a TAX on society? Proverbs warns of those who punish the righteous! To punish a person for something they do not do, or do not buy is injustice, immoral! Was the Roberts translation JUST and MORAL?
Liberals–especially liberal advocates, but liberals generally–derive much of their sense of self-worth from their politics. They are good because they stand up for the weak, speak truth to power, etc. etc.
The corollary: People who oppose the things that make liberals feel good about themselves are not merely wrong, but repugnant.
The problem here is not with the advertisers. Most businesses cannot afford to associate their brands with spokespeople they fear will be viewed by half the country as reprehensible.
The intractable problem behind your difficulties lies in the liberal soul.
One answer might be for the rest of us to be (or act) as morally stunted as the vocal liberals.
It would be better, I think, at every opportunity to call BS on their self-righteousness. That won’t get conservatives more gigs, but over time it might erode the culture’s tacit acceptance of liberal presumptions.
Liberals boycott. Conservatives don’t. When Ellen Degeneres was chosen as a Cover Girl I was surprised for two reasons – she’s no spring chicken and for her lifestyle choice. I see Alec Baldwin shilling for some credit card company yet he complains about the one percenters. Samuel L. Jackson calls whites “racists” yet he voted for Obama solely for the color of his skin. I read yesterday that NASCAR has laid back, spread its legs, and signed a deal with the EPA.
Only when we conservatives stand up and say no more will things change. I no longer eat at Arby’s. I refused to see “The Avengers” because of Samuel Jackson (interestingly enough, I happen to see a rerun of the last Die Hard movie, where Mr. Jackson played a very racist black man. I guess he wasn’t acting). I will be closing my account at Bank of America because it refused to deal with a gun manufacturing company and because it apparently gave a huge loan to the DNC with only a mailing list as collateral (violation of laws but who cares). I don’t watch “Gay BC” (ABC). I stopped watching Glee. I even stopped watching “Big Bang Theory” because it was being written by teenage boys with hormonal imbalances. NBC is going to have a new show that shows two sweet homosexual men on it (how about showing the guys participating in the Naked Jesus day in San Francisco, or the pictures of homosexuals in the same city inflating their scrotums (good grief, why?)). I don’t subscribe to cable because my money would support channels like MTV, VH1, LOGO, etc. Even though I don’t watch, my money would support them.
Conservatives bitch and moan, but they still shop at the companies that treat conservatives like crap. They still buy products/services from companies that support the immoral lifestyles of many of the hollywood elite. They still watch the shows that sell lifestyle choices they disagree with. We nominated a man to run against Obama who will probably do nothing more than slow the destruction of this country, not stop or reverse it. Until we change nothing will change.
I am stepping off my soapbox now.
>>liberals generally–derive much of their sense of self-worth from their politics. They stand up for the weak, speak truth to power, etc. etc.<<
What a bunch of crap! Hyprocrits fool themselves first. Politics is the public debate over future of our civilization, the debate between values/beliefs and ideologies/opinions,and few know the difference even in themselves. They don't give crap about weak! Socialists stand up for those social consequences that make themselves FEEL GOOD! To them FEELINGS ARE REAL, and the concept of "weak" is abstract generalization! Any good social consequence to liberals makes them FEEL good! They find self-worth in their own FEELINGS, "feeling alive and pious" is more important that freedom, freedom of conscience, or of God Himself!
What’s the best Boycott and Commerce Advocacy website or organization for Conservatives ?
I will suggest the American Family Association (AFA.net) and maybe the Eagle Forum (EagleForum.org).
Still, I don’t know if they address a key point sort-of raised by Janine Turner: There’s not much reason for Conservatives to buy products being pitched by liberals and Leftists. A website/group that identifies cases of companies channeling money to Leftists through their advertizing, etc. …and could suggest alternative products … would be helpful.
Many of you consume this dreck anyway, don´t you?
They have certainly lost me, and I have some spending power. I don´t read magazines, I don´t watch tv. I tune out advertising almost completely. When I´m interested in a particular tv show or movie, one that might be good and appeal to my values or at least not annoy me, I rent or download. But never more than once a week. The rest is just not worth my time.
Conservatives who are drooling over celebs disgust me. Remember when they declared Robert Downey Jr. a conservative because he once said something that wasn´t completely inane? How do you feel now that he´s an Obama donor? Why did you even need to care?
People, just stop it. Stop caring about mindless entertainment and the people who produce it. Stop trying to find common ground with the fools who buy into media narratives. You need to feel like you are part of a majority? Well, you aren´t. If you can think for yourself, you are a minority. Act accordingly. Govern your consumption. Be elitist in that way. Discriminate (in the true sense of the word). It´s not hard, given all the options available today.
Life is too short anyway.
