Hmm: Obama Told NY Times ‘Born in Hawaii’ Year Before ‘Born in Kenya’ Bio
According to Peter Osnos — the publisher of Random House’s Times Books division from 1991-1996, during which he published Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father – Obama’s first and long-time literary agent Jane Dystel discovered Obama via a February 6, 1990, article in the New York Times (“First Black Elected to Head Harvard’s Law Review“). Wrote Osnos in 2006:
At Harvard Law School in February, 1990, Obama was elected president of the law review, and the New York Times did a profile of him as the first black leader of the publication. The article caught the attention of a young literary agent named Jane Dystel.
As revealed by Team Breitbart, from 1991 until 2007 Jane Dystel employed a short bio of Obama that referred to his being “born in Kenya.” A protestation of a “fact-checking error” to the contrary, Barack Obama was overwhelmingly likely to have been the source of the “born in Kenya” nugget.
Perhaps adding weight to the conjecture that “born in Kenya” was a conscious marketing decision by Obama and Dystel, the New York Times article that drew the interest of Dystel the year prior mentioned a Hawaiian birth:
The new president of the Review is Barack Obama, a 28-year-old graduate of Columbia University who spent four years heading a community development program for poor blacks on Chicago’s South Side before enrolling in law school. His late father, Barack Obama, was a finance minister in Kenya and his mother, Ann Dunham, is an American anthropologist now doing fieldwork in Indonesia. Mr. Obama was born in Hawaii.
The Internet Archive does not list a crawl of this article prior to 2009, but a scanned PDF of the article stored at ProQuest certainly reads “born in Hawaii.”
So the New York Times article which helped net Obama a literary agent printed Hawaii as his birthplace. Obama was undoubtedly the source of this information. He was also undoubtedly aware of the “born in Kenya” bio.
Accordingly, Dystel either:
- Missed this information, and later relied on false information supplied by Obama;
- Convinced Obama to use Kenya instead of Hawaii for marketing purposes; or
- Arrived at the decision to use Kenya with Obama’s input.
If Obama had been using a false Kenyan birthplace for affirmative action reasons, he likely would not have been using this information when applying to Harvard Law School. A New York Times article stating a Hawaiian birthplace contradicting his application would certainly have ruffled feathers in the admissions office; Obama should have been wise enough not to tell such a fib to the Times reporter.
Obama’s life story is a mystery surrounded by a conundrum wrapped in a fallacy compounded by a lie projected and protected by HIDDEN Documents and a compliant complicit Lame Steam EneMedia and willing dupes and is believed by gullible naive fools.

Yes, I agree. But I think it is wrong to accept that he was born in Hawaii – or at least in Honolulu.
Tim Adams, who worked as a senior elections clerk in Honolulu swore that there was no birth certificate for Obama in the database or at either of the Honolulu hospitals. Whether they only examined birth certificates at the 04 AUG 1961 date or during an extended period before and after is not stated. But so far there is no credible evidence for his birth in Hawaii – statements of officials notwithstanding.
There is a birth certificate with a footprint from Mombasa, Kenya. But until someone gets around to checking Obama’s footprint against the one on that certificate, there is no proof that he was born in Kenya – statements of his grandmother notwithstanding.
It seems to me that if Obama had been born in Hawaii, he would not have had to produce a forged document in April of last year. So my guess is that he was born elsewhere. Some have suggested Kenya; some have suggested the state of Washington.
It is just as probable to say that ‘the born in Kenya story’ is the truth and that he changed his line when he wanted to run for president as to say that ‘the born in Hawaii story’ is the truth and that he changed his line to get preferential treatment.
We will probably never know the truth of his birth. He himself probably does not know the truth. What we do know is that there is fraud, forgery, intimidation and a massive coverup. And at this point, the truth of that is what counts.

Not quite so: Even if 0 was delivered in Hawaii, it has become crystal clear there is NO true copy of the birth certificate that he could present. He played his hand under duress.
What I should have said is: If Obama had been born in Hawaii, his birth certificate would have been found in the files and he would not have been forced to produced a forged document to attest to his birth there. Besides which, he would more than likely have had a copy of it in his files.
Of course he had his birth certificate in his files. He posted it online during the 2008 presidential race.
There are some 14,000 legitimate version of birth certificates in the U.S. How the hell does one establish a forgery, especially with digital documents? It’s impossible.

And that one of those little dutiful grandson visits prior to and just after her death included a directive to seek and destroy any and all evidence which could have proven contrary to his presidential candidate’s narrative. I’d be interested in seeing the printed article put out by the NY Times back then, actual newsprint yellowed with age. The timeline for the last few weeks certainly allows for some people at the times digging up that past article, digitally correcting it, then putting out the PDF of the “original” article as a way of helping Obama past all the controversy over Dyson’s born-in-Kenya “typo”.

Wrong on several levels. (1) Obama would not have anticipated, when he applied at HLS, that he would be elected president of the law review and/or that an NYT article about him would appear three years later. His only concern was getting in to another institution for which he was unqualified and which he could not afford. Think about it: Obama’s grades and tests scores were so bad that just being black wasn’t enough. He had to add “foreign” and the enticement of a double Diversity Achievement credits to his CV to get in to Columbia and then HLS, and by god that is what he did.
(2) As an alum, I can tell you that while HLS may well have been a bit miffed had the issue come to their attention, there is no way in hell that they would have made any public move to discredit their big Diversity Achievement–period. They would sooner tap in to some of that $4 billion endowment fund they sleep on like Smaug on his pile of treasure.

When I first started work as an engineer an old engineer told me, “I never lie to a client and I always tell them the absolute truth. That way when they ask me a similar question later, I know what I told them the first time.” I think that is Obama’s problem, he has told so many untruths that he can’t extricate himself.

I think this whole Kenya Hawaii is an amusing moment, and my theory is that it is all a Halliburton disinformation operation. BHO is clearly not stout enough to manage the truth, and he surely cannot manage this set of lies, errors and missing 18 and 1/2 minutes of tape. So it has to be the evil genius that runs the White House, Halliburton, of course.
Obama was willing to misrepresent something as simple, something as basic, as place of birth in order to garner whatever perceived creds and cachet it might offer him in the moment.

Duke, see my Comment # 21 below. If she ever really was with him, it was Ann Dunham Obama who left BHO, Sr., not the other way around. When BHO, Jr.’s Birth Announcement was put in the paper in Aug. 1961 it gave the new-born’s parents’ address as the rented house then occupied by the grandparents (i.e., Ann’s parents, the Dunhams). The presumed purpose of the birth announcement was to protect the reputation of the 18 year old mother, who got pregnant 10 months before when she was 17, getting married 3 months later, on Feb. 2, 1961, to Obama, Sr., who had his own apartment as a 24 year old second year foreign student at the U. of Hawaii (where he met the freshman Ann, the fall before). The Dunhams (and Obama, Sr.’s family as well) were reportedly both against the marriage, so why would Obama, Sr. give up his college apartment to move in with the Dunhams? There was a motive to misreport the date of birth, ten months after the alleged pregnancy, to allow more time between the Feb. marriage and the birth, which, as reported in Wikipedia, was 10 months after the pregnancy. One question is, at the time of the Feb. marriage, who knew that Ann was pregnant.
A month after the reported birth of Pres. Obama (allegedly on August 4, 1961) Ann appeared in Washington State, where she had gone to high school, with her little baby in tow but without her “husband.” Here, with a “one-month” old child, she enrolled in the University of Washington for classes starting in Sept. 1961. Meanwhile Obama, Sr. started his third year at the U. of Hawaii proving it was Ann who left Senior (or they were forced to separate if they were ever together) not the other way round. (Ann dropped out of the U. of H. in Jan., 1961 or before, after only one semester as a Freshman).
After Obama Sr. graduated the U of Hawaii a year early in the summer of 1962, with honors and a Phi Beta Kappa key (as the University’s first Black student, or maybe as its first foreign Black student) he toured the US mainland for the summer and then started his doctorate program at Harvard U in Sept. 1962, at a time when the Prez, still in Washington state, was one year old. At this point, also in Sept. 1962, the Mother Ann finally left Washington with Barry, to re-enroll in the U. of Hawaii now that her husband was out of town, at Harvard. What? She couldn’t find a college in Boston that would accept her?
So when did Obama Senior and Ann Obama ever live together? At her parent’s house in 1961, when they opposed the marriage, or during Senior’s summer breaks? It was not during the summer break of 1962 while senior toured the mainland US without his family and one year old son.
Given this scenario, when Ann appeared in Washington State the month after Barry was allegedly born in August (where she likely had been spirited or exiled by her parents – or maybe it was her choice to return to her familiar high school stomping grounds) what is the likelihood that she went to Kenya with or without Senior to give birth? What American teenager wants to give birth to her first child in a third world country away from her parents with whom she is allegedly living? Why would Barack senior want to introduce her to his African family, who opposed the marriage to his white teenaged wife from Kansas, where he already had a Kenyan wife who he abandoned in 1959 pregnant, who then gave birth to a child whom he had never met? Remember he never told Ann about the prior wife or child and that he was still married. Did he really want his two wives, of different races, who he had never disclosed to each other, to meet by accident? Does not make sense, particularly since Ann left him and not the other way round. Remember, Ann returned to Hawaii and her parents as soon as Barry Sr. left the State, but not before. Also, Obama, Sr. wouldn’t likely want to introduce Ann to his Kenyan family, in a place (independent in 1962) still ruled by the British who had imprisoned and tortured Barack Sr. before he left the place for greener pastures.
Lastly, according to the Dunhams, when Obama, Sr. belatedly told Ann about Wife No. 1 he lied and said he was already divorced in Feb. 1961 when he married Ann, which Ann later discovered was false – he never got divorced from Wife No. 1. So, we can see from his dishonesty that Obama, Sr. certainly had a motive to keep his two wives of different races and cultures apart, notwithstanding the Muslim/Kenyan customs of polygamy, which he must have known Americans neither accepted nor approved.
So it does not sound like Ann and Senior travelled to Kenya before Aug. 1961 to give birth, with Ann running back to Washington State without her husband to start school in Sept. 1961 with a one month old in tow. No, Barry Obama Soetero was not born in Africa. The contemporary motivations of the adults involved just don’t support it.
This does not discount the possibility that Ann gave birth in Washington and that the marriage and birth announcements were shams to protect her reputation. Whatever, though. Barry Jr. did use the “Born in Kenya” story to his supposed advantage at the time, and should have known it was false, if he had thought about it even for a moment. (And remember, he wrote a whole book about it, at least orally or in draft, which someone else, Bill Ayers (?)thenput in final form.

The Harvard Admissions office would have been eagle-eyeing baracky’s admission records and comparing them to interviews in newspapers all around the country. They probably had staff dedicated to stuff like that. It should be obvious to everybody that they were really really fierce about enforcing their affirmative action rules and regulations and would never give a guy like baracky any slack.

The EDITOR of the law review is the prestigious position based upon scholarly merit. I have no idea what the “head” of the law review does…I do know what he doesn’t do. He doesn’t do one damn scholarly thing. He doesn’t write law review articles, he doesn’t edit law review articles, he doesn’t engage in any scholarly activity whatsoever that is recorded for others to review.
He sits around and does political, turf building, resume’ puffery, dorm room BS sessions as far as I can tell.
And a PROFESSOR of Constitutional Law is not merely a lecturer. One presumes that one would have to actually…you know…like, understand and appreciate the Constitution in order to teach it.
Since his entire resume’ is filled with intent to mislead, and we STILL don’t have a clear understanding of where his Social Security card was issued, (was it really from Connecticut…a state where he has NEVER resided, even a single day????), how he traveled on a passport to restricted countries, how he gained admission to Columbia without a single honor in high school or college, how he gained admission to Harvard without a single honor in high school or college, …why should we believe without verification or take at face value ANYTHING that is said about his past?
For my money, only Stanley Kurtz’ is credible, because he is the only one doing the deep investigative reporting on the subject.
Frankly, we don’t know anything about Obama…all we know is what has filtered through the distortion lens that he tightly controls and that his Propaganda and Lies Ministry puts out….other than what Stanley Kurtz has dug out of the dirt with his hard work.
Right now, I assume everything we are being told is BS. And…it is not illegitimate to ask for the truth.

Other past presidents of the Review include Michael Boudin, Henry Friendly, and Richard Posner, all of whom later became Appeals Court judges.

This kind of factual stuff is easy to find, but I guess it’s more fun to just make things up.
Affirmative action resumes are often not worth the paper they are printed on. In the end, this is what is wrong with affirmative action programs as they have evolved. Nothing wrong with trying to make up for lost time and lost opportunity due to past discrimination. However, for certain jobs, like heart surgery, nuclear reactor design and President of the United States, full and complete vetting of a person’s skill sets and past performance out to be required. Excuse me if I don’t find this blurb authored within the highly politicized and liberal environment at the University of Chicago to be very compelling.

Napoleon Bonaparte, which was his real name, was not born in France either. He was quite explicit that his foreign birth in Corsica as a Corsican (closer to an Italian than a Frenchman), which was then ruled as a colony by the French, allowed him to spill rivers of French blood to expand his personal power. Let’s see. Born on an off shore island, ruled for a long time as a colony, of a foreign parent (unless its Davis). Nah. Sounds nothing like Bonaparte, Hitler or Stalin. (Didn’t someone say “Beware the foreign born ruler who will come to destroy the USA).

He was when Marshal Davout was present. Boney ended up in exile twice after butchering millioons in Europe, Haiti and Africa too. Where he died a bitter failure. He was good at fighting battles for a while and did do some good things in the legal realm, though invading Russia and losing and abandoning 400,000 men (or was it only 200,000)not being among them. He was sick at Waterloo and did not have Davout, and was up against the British and Prussians, so I’ll give him a pass on that, but even so, it “was a close run thing.”
I believe this is further evidence that he was indeed born in Hawaii, but that he wanted to further romanticize his life.
Well, I think I agree with Lawrence Tribe’s assertion that Obama didn’t mean to imply that the Supreme Court couldn’t over rule a congressional law (Obamacare) for being unconstitutional. I’m sure Tribe is right that Obama didn’t mean it. Just like Obama didn’t mean to have his publicist claim for years that he was born in Kenya and that for years Elizabeth Warren didn’t mean she was a Cherokee Indian for Harvard affirmative action purposes. Implications just happen: we can be anything we want to be.
There are so many unanswered questions about Mr. Obama’s past that they would fill a book called “Unanswered Questions About Mr. Obama’s Past.” (Sorry!)
If I had to pick one it would be this – How does a guy get to be president of the Harvard Law Review and then FAIL to be published himself? The head of the Harvard Review might not be published in that journal itself but, with that sort of a credential behind him, he should be able to get published in any one of the more than one hundred other college law reviews around the country.
The rather unhelpful Wikipedia article on the Harvard Law Review says the following about the selection of it’s leadership…..”Fourteen editors (two from each 1L section) are selected based on a combination of their first-year grades and their competition scores. Twenty editors are selected based solely on their competition scores. The remaining editors are selected on a discretionary basis.” (There are forty editors in all.)
Since we don’t know what Mr. Obama’s grades were at Harvard (or anywhere else) it seems a reasonable assumption that he was one of those editors selected on a “discretionary basis.” It also seems safe to assume that his legal writing skills had littled to do with it.
One thing I did read about Obama at Harvard that has the ring of truth is that when a student asked a professor a question in such a way as to praise the professor in an extravagant and fulsome manner, it was (I think) called doing an “Obama”. The reason this rings true to me is that it is not really how a presidential candidate would want to have his past actions represented, yet seems innocuous enough to make it past the unofficial vow of omerta all main-stream journalists have taken on his behalf. It also, by the way, helps explain how he got that prestigious post as editor.

Does nobody whose name carries real and substantial weight in the United States have the guts to make an outright challenge to Obama to produce the proof of where he was born, also his college records, medical records, etc? I have far too much respect for the USA to believe that is the case – but the voices are really slow in coming forward! Come on, somebody? Éamonn, Dublin, Ireland.

Adherence to the principles of affirmative action coupled with the fear of being labelled as “racist” seem to be the factors behind the widespread reticence to approach Obama with demands to cough up the truth about his background.
I cannot wait for this utter fraud to be voted out of office so he can meld into obscurity where he belongs & the rest of us can stop speculating about him.
With all due respect sir, you must keep in mind that recent U S Administrations have in the last quarter century elevated the power structure of the executive branch to the point where even mild vocal criticism will be met with total destruction of the critic. That would be financial ruin, character assasination, unwarranted Department of Justice investigations, Tax fraud allegations, all with media fuel added to the fires of controversy. I read that at least since Carl Sandburg’s book, we can pretty much say where Abraham Lincoln was and what he was doing everyday of his life. With Obama we cannot even say when he was born. We might be able to track down where Ann Dunham, an 18 year old was on Obama’s purported day of birth, but what if we have the date of his birth wrong?
According to Stanley Ann Dunham Obama Soetero’s biography on Wikipedia, she moved with her family from Washington State to Hawaii in 1960, a year after it became the last state to join the Union. This was just after she graduated from High School in Washington (1960). She was born on Nov. 29, 1942 which would have made her 17 when she graduated high school in the summer. She got pregnant by a Black Man in Nov. 1960, presumably in Hawaii where she was attending the University of Hawaii, having started in Sept 1960, and dropping out shortly thereafter, after her first semester, apparently because of the preganancy.
So she probably got pregnant before she turned 18 at the end of Nov. on Nov. 29, 1960. The father of the current president allegedly born late, in the tenth month of pregnancy (Aug. 4, 1961) was either BHO, Sr. then 24, who had come to Hawaii at age 23, starting at the University of Hawaii as a foreign student the year before Ann, in Sept. 1959 at age 23. (He was born June 18, 1936 — so he was 6 years older than Stanley Ann).
Obama, Sr. met Ann in the Fall of 1960 (no more than 2 months before she got pregnant) while they were both attending a Russian language class, Russia then being the leading communist country in the world.
Or the alternate theory is that the father was Frank Marshall Davis born Dec. 31, 1905 and then almost 55. Davis, a leftist poet, journalist and alleged communist, though certainly a socialist like BHO, Sr., is alleged to have been a friend and contemporary of Ann’s parents, having grown up in the same part of Kansas that the senior Dunhams did, which was the state where Ann was born too, 37 years after Davis. However, the story is that the Dunhams did not meet Davis until 1960 after they moved to Hawaii where Davis was living and working in the Socialist Press (and possibly he was then well known in socialist/communist circles in which the Dunhams travelled).
So Obama Sr. and Ann were married on Feb. 2, 1961 in Hawaii over the objections of both families, with Ann, 18 and able to make her own decisions, now three months pregant. Obama, Sr. never told Ann or the Dunhams he was already married with a pregnant wife in Kenya, but he later (when) told Ann, falsely claiming he had been legally divorced, something Ann later discovered was false as well, though the Muslim culture permitted multiple wives (though Obama Sr. was an avowed Atheist, born Mulsim and later converting to Catholicism before he discovered atheism).
After they were “married” did Obama Sr. and Ann then live together? Don’t know but Obama Sr. continued his studies at U of H, graduating in 1962 and then enrolled for advanced studies at Harvard University. Ann dropped out of the U of H after the one fall semester because she was pregnant. Seven months later, allegedly in August, 1961, Ann gave birth at the Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital, now operating under a different name. Then she moved back to Washington State with her son Barry, who many witnesses saw with her, to attend college at the University of Washington, while her bigamist husband stayed in Hawaii. After that the two never lived together, though they may have during vacations and summer breaks from college, with Obama Sr. studying at Harvard after 1962. They got divorced in 1964 by consent (after Ann found out about the bigamy?). The place and grounds for divorce would be interesting to see. Anyone know?
Based on this it would be hard to believe Obama Sr. dragged Ann to Kenya to give birth and then she returned to enroll in Washington State to begin class in Sept. 1961 a month after President Obama was born. But his date and place of birth is still open for speculation since no Birth Certificate has been produced and the Certificate of Live Birth is alleged to be a forgery. I’m mystified still but the whole marriage thing appears to be a sham. Why did Ann get out of Dodge as soon as she could? Did she find out about the bigamy thing, or was it just a cover story cuz a 54 year old poet known for seducing young women (see Muddy Waters) got her pregnant?

I could accept that if over the years, one or two articles misstated the birth place of Obama. What I have a problem with is the DOZENS of ‘mistakes’.

I’m amazed it is so difficult, nay almost impossible to validate the reality of his origins. Police intelligence and the presence of so many resources available today should be able to uncover the truth. It’s not as if we’re trying to locate Amelia Erhart. WTF Me suspects there are initiatives in place that work to cover up his history…whatever that might be. Consider also what can be discovered through a visa or passport application for the average person.

Remember that Bill Ayers father’s mailman claimed to have met Obama while he was a student. According to the mailman, Obama introduced himself as a “foreign student” before declaring that he would one day be president. So that means he used the Kenyan birthplace to get into Harvard, whether he was actually born there or not.

Barry soetoro Obama never did come up with the original birth certificate, the one with the imprint of the stamp of the notary. Several people found that Obama’s social security is questionable since it indicates a state where Obama never resided and I can’t remember the particular state. Also there is something phony about his draft car information. There is a video where Obama is talking witha group of people and someone suggested that he try to go to some school or something that would require a birth certificate and Obama said that he can’t do that because he is not an American citizen.
Do I think Obama was really born in Kenya? No.
Do I think that Obama would state his place of birth as Kenya to gain an edge on acceptance to college? Hell yes
I think THIS is what he trying cover up more than anything else except really lame grades of course by not releasing his college records.
