Gunwalker Goes ‘Legal’: Obama Admin Massively Increased Gun Sales to Mexican Military
Sharyl Attkisson of CBS News has posted a bombshell article detailing how the Obama administration has greatly increased gun sales to the Mexican military. But further investigation into Attkisson’s discovery points toward the padding of a gun-control statistic — one frequently mentioned by the Obama administration — as the motive behind the increased sales.
Writes Attkisson:
One weapon — an AR-15-type semi-automatic rifle — tells the story. In 2006, this same kind of rifle — tracked by serial number — is legally sold by a U.S. manufacturer to the Mexican military.
Three years later — it’s found in a criminal stash in a region wracked by Mexican drug cartel violence.
That prompted a “sensitive” cable, uncovered by WikiLeaks, dated June 4, 2009, in which the U.S. State Department asked Mexico “how the AR-15″ — meant only for the military or police — was “diverted” into criminal hands.
And, more importantly, where the other rifles from the same shipment went: “Please account for the current location of the 1,030 AR-15 type rifles,” reads the cable.
There’s no response in the record.
The problem of weapons legally sold to Mexico — then diverted to violent cartels — is becoming more urgent. That’s because the U.S. has quietly authorized a massive escalation in the number of guns sold to Mexico through ”direct commercial sales.” It’s a way foreign countries can acquire firearms faster and with less disclosure than going through the Pentagon.
Perhaps the most interesting disclosure: the 1,030 weapons that were sold for use by the Mexican military were not military-grade weapons. The Mexican government was acquiring the AR-15, a semi-automatic firearm designed for the civilian market. Selective-fire weapons (which have the ability to fire either in fully automatic or semi-automatic) would be preferred by virtually any modern military force.
Why was the Mexican military buying commercial, off-the-shelf AR-15 rifles from the Obama administration via the State Department in record numbers? Writes Attkisson:
[The State Department] approve[d] 2,476 guns to be sold to Mexico in 2006. In 2009, that number was up nearly 10 times, to 18,709. The State Department has since stopped disclosing numbers of guns it approves, and wouldn’t give CBS News figures for 2010 or 2011.
With Mexico in a virtual state of war with its cartels, nobody’s tracking how many U.S. guns are ending up with the enemy.
…
The State Department audits only a tiny sample — less than 1 percent of sales — but the results are disturbing: In 2009, more than a quarter (26 percent) of the guns sold to the region that includes Mexico were “diverted” into the wrong hands, or had other “unfavorable” results.
If the audited sample is representative of the total, 26 percent of 18,709 — 4,864 guns — were diverted from the Mexican military to the cartels in one year, and the Obama administration apparently chose not to stop the program.
Does a logical reason exist for the administration to continue to approve such sales?

Lets not beat around the bush. This All about guns. Everything these people do revolves ultimately about guns. It is guns that give these ruling elites their power. It is guns that they fear. It is guns that they must if they are to take over my country have in order to rule with an iron fist. It is guns that they must take from the populous in order obtain that absolute power. It is guns they understand like none other are the real power behind anything. It is guns this system of government now lives by. It is guns that they use to enforce everything.
And it is guns in the hands of We The People that they fear most.
Any thing else is a cheap side show.
“The State Department has since stopped disclosing numbers of guns it approves, and wouldn’t give CBS News figures for 2010 or 2011.”
FOIA, *please*! Bob? Sharyl? Christian? You’re doing great work and I know you’re busy, but if those numbers exist, the really need to be public.
Bob – Have you gone through the Friday night dump of e-mails by DOJ on Fast and Furious? I wonder what nuggets there might be in them.
You won’t get any nuggets from Holder because his emails were specifically excluded from the document dump. Issa was beside himself that the DOJ would provide all these emails , but nothing from the AG. It’s more of the same: pretending to be transparent while giving as little useful information as possible.

Hum, let’s see, the State Dept. has no faith that fully auto M16s will stay with the Mexican military, so they upped the sales of semi auto Ar15s? So, if the drug cartels file the serial numbers off, who’s to say where the weapons came from? Yeah, those weapons missing serial numbers must have come from all those nefarious gun stores on the American side of the border. Yup, they sure ‘nough did. It must be difficult tailoring foreign policy objectives when leading from behind–getting more dope dealing Mexican nationals killed–while meeting the political needs of domestic policy gun control prejudices of the democratic party.
Bingo!
Crisis as a means.
I find it amazing this reporter still has a job. I mean how dare she report on something that could be so damaging to our glorious Resident? [/sarc]
It is so good to see at least one of the big networks taking at least a little interest in this. Ms. Attkisson is very brave to be covering this as much as she has. Not to belittle the efforts here but CBS gets much more coverage to a wider range of audience than we can hope for here. I forward as many of these articles as I can to those on my albeit small email list and I’m sure they get forwarded to many others as well. We all need to get these stories out there to as many as we can. This cannot be allowed to continue and they can’t be allowed to get away with what has been done already.
Couldn’t this have just been a scheme to make some money? These guys are all crooks, we know that. Couldn’t DoJ just bought the guns cheap in the US, sold them to the Cartels for big profits and simply pocketed the cash? Didn’t Holder get a lot of cash from Marc Rich for getting Willie to sign Rich’s pardon? Maybe, he spent it all and needed more, quick and easy.
Atty. Gen. Holder again threw out the 70% number; gun traced back to US source. What is the breakdown of those sources. How many are FFL’s? How many are from US Gvt. sales to MX Gvt? Nobody ever digs into what makes up the 70% number. Makes me suspicious of both sides of this argument.
Lets see…you sell 100,000 guns to the mexicans through the Federal Government sources never seeing a gun store….and you sell 3000 guns through fast and furious.
Now, any of those 103,000 guns that show up in criminal hands is the fault of the guns stores and lax laws…
Hint Hint, if the Mexicans all were allowed to own guns..the cartels would be gone.but so would the corrupt Mexican government.
I think NCBob may be on to something here. While we all think the whole Fast and Furious operation is aimed at gun control in the U.S., maybe there is a simpler (and more common) explanation: that members of the administration are in the pocket of the drug cartels.
Its a twofer! Push for US gun control while getting billions from the Cartels by selling them guns. Sweet deal for the leftist elites…
Next we will be sending arms to Al Qaeda. Oh wait…
Only 1/4 of the smuggled guns ended up in cartel hands? That will not do–more crimes must be committed with those guns Holder supplied if the Democratic Party is to use Fast and Furious as a means to curtail the Second Amendment!
If a few more Border Patrol agents die, well, so much the better for Obama–breaking a few eggs to make omelettes, and all that.
no, this was about gun control. he wants our guns, and we all know what he plans once he gets them. only honest citizens would be without them if they were illegal to own. look at the big cities. they don’t ‘flash mob’ where folks carry guns.
however, notice how every time a prez takes office he suddenly becomes against legalization of marijuana and the last three were all party animals in their youth. legalization would quickly and suddenly quiet the drug war, and make the border and several south american countries more safe. trillion$ of $$$ are made off illegal drugs. keeping them all classified as harmful, and illegal just $tokes this fire. of course they need mj to be illegal. it creates the chaos these scum plan to use in 2012 to stay in power.
these monsters/mobsters have a plan for amerika’s furure, and we ain’t in it.
There is an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) in draft form making its way through the UN process and due out next Summer. It reportably would require countries who sign on to it to set up a system to monitor domestic small arms transfers. That means registration of guns, followed by restrictions and then Great Britain style confiscation??. Hillary has indicated the U.S. would support UN efforts to produce a treaty. Fast forward to late next summer; if “Fast and Furious” had worked as planned, Hillory would be testifying on Capital Hill about all the guns from the U.S. in the hands of the cartels. It would give cover to moderate republicans (Snow, McCain, Collins) and luke warm Democrat 2nd Ammendent supporters to vote to approve a treaty to comprimise our rights
The ATT is a distraction from the dummycrats real agenda, us a “wag the dog” scenerio to start their gun grab. The US Constitution does not allow any foreign treaty to override the Bill of Rights. These schemes are even stupider than the movie was.
Lemme get this straight. A shady, Illiberal/RINO government-run program TRULY intended to lessen gun sales to/for Americans went deeply awry when providing said guns to an incompetent, corrupt-ridden, quasi-military, quasi-police drug cartel-controlled 3rd World country?
Furthermore the same 3rd Worlders hasn’t paid back the loaned tens of billions, encourages their low educated citizenry to invade my country and doesn’t want the millions of uneducated illegal aliens presently in my country abusing/reinterpreting our laws, siphoning billions of unearned ‘entitlements’ annually, lowering our education standards, safety in our streets all the while grabbing/demanding for more?
Real shocker.
Only government employees and associated agencies can be this incompetent, this footloose with other’s lives, claim later it’s all been done for ‘improving our lives, safety’.
I know I sound like a broken record. Why is anyone surprised! These guys are corrupt and willing to do anything to undermine our country. One term is too many!
Ain’t this just the government way. Try to take guns away from the honest citizens of their own country then sell guns to criminals in other countries. The DemiCRAPS need to pull their heads out of their….
The Mexican and US Governments’ Politicians are getting rich off of the Cartels. The US is laundering their money so the Cartels must be protected with arms.
It appears we are arming a irregular army down there, can’t imagine why? Possible support in the 2012 elections ? Our press has more important things to do, like help Obama get re-elected. After all, there’s a country to be destroyed and he and the Dems haven’t finished yet.
Scum floats. None of the “leaders” in any country represent the vast majority of their population, just themselves and their buddies. Political party rivalries are artificial, a way to induce false splits within national populations; labelling some other nation as an “enemy” is just more of that toxic theatre.
All over the world, regular people just want to live a good life. The mistake we’ve made in recent centuries is projecting our decency onto the sociopathic, transnational power layer and accepting as legitimate their sugar-coated lies, deviant values, and twisted lexicon.
Their power has been in the control of information. WikiLeaks was a turning point, waking Alexander Hamilton’s “great beast”, which is roughly at the point of slurping its morning coffee while cruising open media on the net and realising, this is NOT the world we want.
We can see the only social difference that really matters is that between regular people everywhere, and the soulless narcissists who did whatever it took to get to the “top”. It’s over for them now but they have left us with a heavy load of trauma-induced social problems and destructive interpersonal patterns in every country.
We don’t need bullets, anger, or “factions” to get our world back, that’s their way. We must acknowledge our common humanity and work very, very hard together to clean up the pain and destruction.
And we MUST keep our internet open and free, without hierarchy, as was defined by Tim Berners-Lee.
Incidentally, I’m a Canadian who is now experiencing some of the corruption at all levels of government and law enforcement, including RCMP cover-ups of murders and protecting murderers to the point of, you guessed it, arranging the murders of witnesses and whistleblowers…
More than half the military are on the payroll of the drug cartels so what’s the diff?
