Gunwalker: Did Bush Walk Guns, Too?
After a damning series of documents revealed that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and other top Department of Justice officials were aware of the fact that Operation Fast and Furious walked thousands of guns into Mexico, the Obama administration pushed back through Associated Press reporter Pete Yost, attempting to divert the blame to — who else? — George Bush:
The federal government under the Bush administration ran an operation that allowed hundreds of guns to be transferred to suspected arms traffickers — the same tactic that congressional Republicans have criticized President Barack Obama’s administration for using, two federal law enforcement officials said Tuesday.
…
When Bush, a Republican, was president, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Tucson, Ariz., used a similar enforcement tactic in a program it called Operation Wide Receiver. The fact that there were two such ATF investigations years apart in separate administrations raises the possibility that agents in still other cases may have allowed guns to “walk.”
The “two federal law enforcement officials” are anonymous Department of Justice employees attempting to find a way of avoiding responsibility for their roles in authorizing what appears to be criminal acts associated with Operation Fast and Furious and related programs. But let’s skip that to get at the meat of their “Bush did it” defense.
First, as any child above the age of six can tell you, “two wrongs don’t make a right.” If someone else breaks a law, that does not mean you have carte blanche to run amok and violate federal laws and international agreements with reckless abandon. If this is the only defense that the Justice Department can devise — besides Eric Holder’s “I didn’t understand the question” — then they must be in very, very deep trouble. But let’s look at the claim parroted uncritically by Yost all the same.
A series of emails between two Department of Justice officials — Jason Weinstein, deputy assistant attorney general of the Criminal Division, and Deputy Chief of the National Gang Unit James Trusty — bring operation Wide Receiver to our attention. It is referred to as “the Tucson case” in the following exchange:
Looks like we’ll be able to unseal the Tucson case sooner than the Fast and Furious (although this may be just the difference between November and December). It’s not clear how much we’re involved in the main F and F case, but we have Tucson and now a new, related case with [redacted] targets.
Reading this email from Trusty to Weinstein, Wide Receiver does not seem to be discussed as an artifact of the Bush administration that concluded in 2007. They speak of this case as a contemporaneous affair, along with Operation Fast and Furious (which was active at the time) and the “new, related case.” In a related email (at the link), Weinstein mentions these cases represent “a significant set of prosecutions.”
But Yost’s article says this:
Federal law enforcement officials familiar with the matter say Operation Wide Receiver began in 2006 after the agency received information about a suspicious purchase of firearms. The investigation concluded in 2007 without any charges being filed.
After Obama took office, the Justice Department reviewed Wide Receiver and discovered that ATF had permitted guns to be transferred to suspected gun traffickers, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the practice is under investigation by Congress and the Justice Department inspector general’s office.
During the time Fast and Furious was running, senior DOJ officials seemed to be referring to Wide Receiver as a current event, and yet the anonymous DOJ officials — perhaps Lanny Breuer and David Voth — refer to 2007 and say Wide Receiver ended without any charges being filed.
The two stories being told about Wide Receiver don’t add up, and it may be worth asking if the version of Wide Receiver talked about contemporaneously by Trusty and Weinstein as a case leading to prosecutions is the same Wide Receiver run under the Bush administration that closed without charges being filed.

The AP claims to have found a rock on which the word, Gun, was written. That’s proof enough for them.
Snfffff, snffff, snfff something stinks here! The Obammmy admin is in deep doodoo up to their arse and they can’t shovel fast and furious enough to keep their aristocratic noses out of it! The “Pin it on Bush” tactic is a weak attempt at deflecting the scorching truth of the matter that will bring atty gen EH down and the Obammy admin with it. Can you say… accomplice to murder????
Actually, what they found was a wok.
The AP article is a riot of partisan hackery that sees this whole thing as a conflict between Republicans and Democrats. It’s a conflict between evil people and their victims. Let’s get to the bottom of Operation Wide Receiver.

Ah! The internet. What a lovely thing. For those who care to look. And analyse.
Why do you think the government needs to control it?
Thanks.
Blame Bush – the all purpose excuse for this administration. By all means release all the documents to Issa’s committe and let the chips fall where they may. I seriously doubt if it was official policy of the Bush Administration to “walk guns”, get people murdered, blame gun dealers in the US and use this as a pretext for more “gun control”. This MO is the hare-brained scheme of the Obama Administration alone. Obama himself flew off the handle while in Mexico and blamed “90%” of guns in Mexico on US dealers. His henchmen in DOJ and elsewhere took this as there que to manufacture their case for gun control. Is this what Obama was talking about when he told gun-control advocates that he was working on something “under the radar”?
If the Bush people did it too, then they can share a cell with the Obama people. I don’t care who broke the law, if they broke the law, they should go to jail.
I have some questions for the AP to investigate. Sarah Brady said that on 30 Mar 2011 the POTUS privately told her that gun control was very much on his agenda and “we have to go through a few processes, but under the radar”. Question #1 – By “under the radar” did he mean outside the knowledge of Congress, the Judiciary, the American public or the Mexican government? Question #2 – If these processes were legal and ethical why would they need to be kept “under the radar” at all?
Associated Press = Pravda.
I do like the premise that Bush was involved in “Walking guns”, simply because if that were true, Obama would have no excuse for why he continued the program.
Can we have an impeachment now? Knowing George Bush’s character, he’d confess and accept his punishment. Ya think Obama would? Heh!
(Get ready for the Obama riots, y’all).
The problem is government, in all its forms. The Founders knew this: they’d be flipping out at this stuff.
The reason they use the ATF is that they are the most corrupt, least loved police agency in government. Noone loves them. Shooting people who are no danger to anyone but themselves will never recommend you, in polite company. They are about to be sacrificed at the altar of politics. May God have mercy upon their souls. Or not.
Why do we even have an ATF? Because we tax two of those, which must be ruthlessly enforced, and mingle it with gns to make a statement for safety. No agency is more useless, more anti-constitutional, and more violent, than the ATF. Good riddance!
But, let’s fry us some before we do away with them all. If they help us to put the Obamites in jail, maybe we’ll let them become FBI. Or not.
I’ve been waiting for the Bush blame since this started. Its the go to line of this administration.
I too wondered how long it would take them to blame Bush. Good call.
At one time I though the AP was reliable. Silly me. They’re just as factually challenged as any of the other LSM. Also, I was surprised that a CBS news reporter (Sharyl Attkison) was coming up with scoops on FnF, and I expressed an opinion here and elsewhere that CBS might be doing penance for Rathergate. But now I read in the Weekly Standard that she in unavailable for interviews (h/t Drudge). If CBS news is silencing her, than I may have spoken too hastily.
i just watched fox news reporters on oreilly try to whitewash this whole thing. one said the a.g. is an honest man. both asked why would he want to lie? refusal to look at the real and entire reason(s) for this ‘operation’ puts blinders on to the truth, and
1. honest men don’t try to cover up ‘nothing’
2. honest men (especially honest court officers) don’t refuse to enforce laws equally (nbp)
3. honest men don’t redact documents and obfuscate potential criminal investigations, as is being done
4. honest men don’t try to destroy our country from within
5. honest men don’t try to blame everybody else
6. honest folks don’t scream at reporters (about nothing) and apply pressure to not cover the story
7. honest reporters don’t refuse to cover stories because of personal preferences
and honest men don’t need to hide their entire very questionable history, do they obiwon?
these obamanites have got lots of people fooled, which sadly doesn’t appear to be too hard to do.
GET OFF THE RACIST “FAST AND FURIOUS” NONSENSE! Don’t you idiot neocons realize how racist this all makes you look? In fact, ignore that advice…keep it up! I can see how this one went down: Dick Cheney, George Bush, the Koch twins, and that corporate stoogie Betty Crocker got together in a room somewhere and schemed. “How can we make this negro president look bad? Oh, we’ll make a big deal out of a nothing story, because people associate inner-city blacks with guns. That’s the ticket!”. Right, dream on. Might as well have cooked up some other crock…how about these fanatsies: “Operation Midnight Kools”, or how about “Operation Malt Liquor”…or “Operation Out-of Wedlock”…..or “Operation My Baby’s Daddy”…or “Operation Where’s Popeye’s Chicken At?”…..or “Opertion Big Black Dong”…right. Keep it up racists…you’re showing your true colors. Oh, and thank you Sarah Palin…4 MORE YEARS!
This is so ridiculous, that it’s almost funny.
It’s partisan – sure it is. But racist? You’re a nut job.
Either a parody or someone’s been smokin’ and inhalin’.
I never inhaled!
‘I can see how this one went down: Dick Cheney, George Bush, the Koch twins, and that corporate stoogie Betty Crocker got together in a room somewhere and schemed. “How can we make this negro president look bad?’
ROTFL
That one cracked me up.
Are you raving?
Hey “LovelyEarth”;
The race industry you are working for ain’t gettin’ a bailout. You might as well give it up. And when you lose 60% of your ignorance, the earth will be a lot more lovely.
Make it easy on yourself, and just grow up.
LovelyEarth, I think I love you.
It is so fun to read comments from racist liberals. The simple fact that they see racism behind every door proves they are raced obsessed, and therefore racist. Lovelyearth, seek help. Or just put down the crackpipe.
“light-skinned” appearance and speaking patterns “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.” Harry Reid.
Is this the “negro” you type of #12?
Did Bush walk guns,too?
Probably not. The Bush administration wasn’t trying to shut down 2nd amendment rights. As I recall, under Bush, CCW laws were loosened significantly. His administration wasn’t filled with anti gun zealots and communist party faithfuls, like this one, whose entire lives have been spent in pursuit of voiding the Constitution even if it means one little piece at a time.
Of course, we’ll have to wait to see if the AP can actually manufacture convincing ‘evidence’ out of thin air, first.
Bush didn’t do anything regarding CCWs on the federal level either way.
The push for more liberal CCW laws is at the state level and was happening for years prior to Bush.
Yes I suppose Bush did it to. Also let us not forget that Bill Clinton gave the order to murder 80 people at Waco. 20 of which were innocent children.
I’ve often thought of that moment.
I watched it unfold on TV, I was, unfortunately, 1,000 miles away at the time. Had I been there my reaction would have been to take up my deer rifle and start killing those government agents dressed in black.
I told my wife that day,,, “you are witnessing the death of America”. I wasn’t wrong.
One MAJOR difference:
“The problem is, the “same tactic” under heavy criticism by the House Oversight Committee was not used under President Bush. Operation Fast and Furious started in Fall 2009 and was an offshoot of the Project Gunrunner program implemented under the Bush Administration. Project Gunrunner started as a pilot program in Laredo, Texas and went national in 2006. Project Gunrunner involved the surveillance of straw purchasers buying weapons, but those purchasers were immediately apprehended before crossing back into Mexico or tranferring arms to dangerous criminals.”
“…the key difference between Operation Fast and Furious under Obama and Project Gunrunner under Bush is that under Obama guns were allowed to go back into Mexico without interdiction or arrests.”

Any little kid caught in the act of doing something they know they aren’t supposed to be doing will immediately yell, “He did it too!”.
If Bush was involved he should also stand trial just like obama and holder!
Oh Lovely Earth how do you stand to view a mirror – ‘not bright’ must just bounce back at you with gusto!
And you really pissed me off when you called my favorite cook Betty Crocker a ‘stoogie’ – besides ‘corporate stooge’ would have worked better for you. Funny – I never thought of Aunt Jemima as a ’corporate stooge – she just poured a reasonable blend of syrup.
I did live in South Africa for a while – a place where your President O would still be classed as ‘colored’ by the black Government – some fear factor is still raised about the colored South Africans getting better jobs than their black brothers – isn’t the race card an evil thing!
Your president is doing the bidding of his handlers and promoting the racial and class warfare that helped lift him from a Chicago curbside setting – to where he squirms today – the White House.
And Lovely – ‘Fast and Furious’ and other Progressive programs like it are any thing but ‘nonsense’ – they would – if left unchecked most likely be the death of many of your friends – even Betty Crocker and Jemima would suffer.
Right now is a good time to compare shooting of your mouth with stepping off of a curb – in both situations thinking first can save you from an accident – try it !
