Fraudulent ‘Fact Checks’ and Preemptive Narratives
Despite the overwhelming consensus of subject matter experts on the left and right, PolitiFact gave a Mitt Romney ad objecting to HHS’s move a “Pants on Fire” rating, even though the Journal insists that “it’s worse than Romney says.” PoltiFact’s Molly Moorhead, who wrote the “Pants on Fire” dispatch, cannot possibly still believe that what she wrote is true.
But that isn’t what really matters in the land of leftist “journalism.” What matters is that the Obama campaign and the Pavlovian press now have carte blanche to routinely and gleefully cite her supposedly authoritative but in reality bogus “fact check” to frustrate efforts to expose what HHS has done. More generally, the real reason for the creation and proliferation of fraudulent “fact checks” is to drown out any attempt to expose serious flaws in Democratic candidates’ records and statements, while dishonestly discrediting legitimate Republican and conservative actions and contentions.
Like “fact checks,” preemptive narratives predate this presidential cycle to a limited extent, but have been given heavy doses of steroids this time around while seriously smacking of Democratic campaign coordination. This second new tactic wasn’t in and arguably didn’t belong in the MRC letter, because while the TV networks are its willing beneficiaries, its originators usually toil at the wire services. Two specific examples will illustrate its use.
On September 22, as I noted in my most recent PJ Media column, Thomas Beaumont and Charles Babington at the Associated Press (aka the Administration’s Press), despite the absence of proof and the presence of significant contradictory evidence, declared that “the advantage has shifted toward President Barack Obama” in the presidential race. During the next five days, a poll in Pennsylvania showed Romney within two points of Obama in a state the president supposedly has locked up, within one point in Ohio in a poll which sampled Democrats over Republicans by 10.3 percentage points, and still tied nationally with Rasmussen. But reality isn’t what matters.
The AP pair’s narrative claiming that Obama is close to putting Romney away, which might as well have been drafted by an Obama campaign spinmeister (who knows? Maybe it was) has driven TV and other press coverage all week long.
The Thursday morning trigger I mentioned in my opening paragraph was the arrival of two pieces of absolutely awful economic news demonstrating that the “recovery,” such as it is, has slowed from its already snail-like pace and, as James Pethokoukis wrote, entered “the recession red zone.”
In a rare third-estimate writedown, the government said that second-quarter economic growth was an annualized 1.3% instead of the already anemic 1.7% reported a month ago. After its issuance, Reuters noted: ”Data in hand for the third quarter suggest little improvement.” Even more troubling, durable goods orders in August fell by 13.3% to a raw level over 30% below their April 2010 value.
That’s funny, because the previous morning, AP White House Correspondent (note: not business or economics writer) Jim Kuhnhenn incoherently claimed in another piece – which appears to have Obama administration spin all over it — that economic results “are merging into a straighter line which, while below optimum performance, is moving in a positive direction for the country and for the president in his contest with Republican rival Mitt Romney.” Again, Thursday’s truth didn’t seem to matter. An AP dispatch from Christopher Rugaber that afternoon which surely drove TV news coverage that evening incorporated a relatively unimportant unemployment claims report showing decent week-to-week improvement and “suggested” that “the economy is sturdier than it might appear.” Nothing can be allowed to disturb the pre-determined, election-rigging narrative.
The Soviet Union’s old Pravda and Izvestia would be impressed at the media’s determination to have fake “fact checks” and preemptive narratives control the borders of what can be discussed between now and Election Day, all in the name of advancing the current regime’s reelection efforts. The country’s “journalists,” now serving as willing administration truth-twisting apparatchiks and campaign assistants, should be ashamed.

The media’s new “fact checking” aggressions are founded on a conception of authority that they don’t possess. They do not determine “the truth.” They don’t even determine “the facts.” They emit streams of print, electromagnetic waves, and pixels that make certain claims. Those claims are not authoritative; they’re merely widely believed…though, happily, not so widely as was once the case.
If a New York Times reporter and I, having observed the same event, report it completely differently, does his employer confer superior authority upon him ab initio? I can’t see it, especially not given the many deceptions perpetrated upon the public by that organ in years past. Were the Times capable of citing a decades-long, blemish-free record of always reporting important developments accurately and comprehensively, its claim of authority would at least be worthy of something other than ridicule. As matters stand, I would have the better claim.
When deciding whether to award the mantle of authority to an individual, we go by what we know of his conduct and statements in the past. The standard for conferring authority upon a media institution should be the same. This is the key insight Americans must reach. We appear to be reaching it, more of us every day.
Rome collapsed under a constant flood of northern invasions and the stomach control of bread&circus.Putin, older brother to our skinny, pot smoking communist cant believe his good fortune! At America’s yard sale he also acquired our media with his pocket change! At least now we can blend with Greece and Spain on the ship of fools, taking on water. Apparently Big ears learned to play chess while watching Siberia on the big screen,(a class he didn’t miss).Seting up an American Gulag and buying more bullets than a middle eastern dictator is his idea of moving the queen to the center of the board, explained away as a defensive posture by our [his]own media.
“…pot smoking communist cant believe his good fortune!… ” Finally someone has come out and written the truth, Obama is not liberal he is a Communist and if you think that is benign you’d better read some recent history. We don’t have reporters of the truth in most of media, we have propagandists like Department #6 of the old KGB, the Department of Disinformation and Agitation. Now we have the newDemocrats who have hijacked the mantel of Harry Truman and JKF and they are Communists in sheep clothing, these people are using totalitarian means and methods and by definition that is what they are and not what they say they are. You only have to look to “Fast and Furious” to know how far they are willing to go, an illegal act ending in more killings than the Mei Lai Massacre and it doesn’t make the front page of the propaganda organs that is jokingly called the main stream media.
Thomas Sowell said that the ideas of the Left cannot stand up to three questions:
1) Compared to what?
2) At what cost?
3) What is your hard factual evidence?
The MSM know this and they work tirelessly to ensure that these questions are never asked.
I need to pay closer attention. According to this article the media has been doing “fact checks” and I thought they were “fart checks” because everything that followed was crap. I couldn’t understand how any respectable journalist would run around checking “farts” but now I know they weren’t. Or were they? The press does seem well positioned to get the first sniff of Obama’s “farts”. In Texas Hold-em lingo, they’ve gone “all in”.
Speaking of so-called “fact-checkers.” With a straight face, Brian Williams of NBC News announced last night that Andrea Mitchell will be the fact checker for the presidential debates.
Who will check Andrea’s facts? Andrea wouldn’t recognize a fact if it hit her between the eyes.
NYTimes should change it’s name to Pravada Times. But NYT has been always like that just that many don’t recognize it. NYT didn’t get the name Duranty Times for nothing – it was their glowing coverage of Soviet Union during thiries or so that got the name.
Hard to tell the difference between the view and a news cast. Sick, pathetically sick what passes as a news report these days. Now it’s kinda like flipping through the cartoon channels when you were a kid to find something worth while.
Excellent report, but there are a couple of bugs.
No, they didn’t “allow” them to “walk”. They PUSHED those guns across the border by extorting (felony, remember?) law abiding gun dealers to break the law and move thousands of guns that otherwise would not have gone across the border.
Did someone mention the additional crimes of “conspiracy” and “accessory before the fact”?
On to the next one:
That one needs some fixing, too. Let’s try this:
There ya go. Glad to help.
In the second bit, you highlight something that needs to become more prevalent in media criticism: use of the passive voice to obfuscate the agent bearing responsibility. Some of that’s driven by a desire to avoid litigation, but it becomes a habit that diminishes the impact and honesty of the reporting.
As written, those passages treat the guns as the actors; as though pieces of wood, polymer and steel can, on their own, leap into the hands of criminals. It allows the real actor to go unnamed, and fails to properly pin responsibility on the people that take these actions.
The interaction we are having at this very moment, in this virtual last bastion of truth called the internet, is the only obstacle remaining to info-domination by the MSM. This election will be the final litmus test for a lying media establishment that covets total domination as it belches forth its newspeak bull patties. If ayatollah obama gets re-elected it will vindicate these liars and there will be no stopping them again. I fear that the new criminal administration will find a way to silence our last hope for reality and truth under what amounts to soviet like info-lies. Cherish this medium we use because I believe its days are numbered.
“FEED THE FACT CHECKING FOOLS”
[With "Friends" Like These...]
Coifed and costumed each day come the “FACT CHECKING” whores,
For their lies must commence with the sun,
With the guile of a temptress, to our nation they call,
“Come drink the Kool-Aid of “THE WON.”
“Then suckle his minions, and show them you care,
And you’ll be, oh so glad, if you do.
PEOPLE HUNGER FOR TRUTH,
But WE’VE NO TRUTH TO SHARE,
WE CAN ONLY SELL KOOL-AID TO YOU.”
“Feed our fools, just a few lies apiece,
We can drink of the Kool-Aid for a few lies apiece.
“Feed our fools” that’s what they cry,
And throughout our nation their song fills the skies.
From someplace that’s not hot for the wicked,
The “Fact Checkers” are “checking” away.
And although we can’t see it, we know they are smiling,
For each honest soul led astray.
Though these whores are corrupted (it’s true),
If you listen, they’re calling to you:
“Feed our fools, just a few lies apiece,
A few “spins”, some “false facts” and a few “fibs” apiece.”
PASS ALONG THE FUN; SHARE THE RIDICULE; COPY THE MOCKING. NO RIGHTS RESERVED
DAMN those annoying facts and those media whores who insist on them, why can’t they let us live in our fact-free world??
DAAAAMMMM!!!, leave us in peace, you shrieking harpies.
Oh, boo hoo, the Rawmoney narrative that everything Obama has done is wrong and that by just electing Rawmoney everything will change (even without a plan) hasn’t worked out so, I know. LET’S BLAME THE PRESS!!
Yeah, that’ll work.
What will work is the Right going out and getting our side to vote so Obamapunks like you get a dose of reality.
Yes, just changing who is President will make a huge difference. Yes, even without a plan. If the plan is to do nothing, it will still be superior to this administration’s hostility to business. You want proof? Go talk to a small businessman. He’ll give you an earful! You just do not know what you are talking about. You have only empty mockery to offer us.
The only way to go after this news skewing websites such as NYTIMES, WAPO, MSNBC, CBS, is to boycott them. Hitting them on the bottom line might give them something to think about. I no longer go to MSNBC and rely on Real Clear, PJ and WSJ. It appears CBS has stopped publishing controversial political news as it might reflect badly on Obama, since there is so much negative news with the economy and foreign policy out there. THey appartently have reduced what ever coverage they do and just continue to bash Romney.
Exactly – why do conservatives keep supporting these outfits? But they do.
I’ve found on the liberal websites, if you shout “fact check this” about an issue the MSM has chosen to ignore, it pretty well kills the thread. Because we all know, they aren’t going to fact check something they’re covering up. And it also blunts the “fact check” as final word since they won’t use it if it won’t help them.
The “fact check” tactic backfired on them with the “47%” so-called gaffe. All it did was keep the meme alive. And despite trying to play it off as a Romney mistake, I still contend it helped him. If it were truly a gaffe, it’d still be today’s Dem talking point. Instead they’re going on about poll data.
“Jim Kuhnhenn incoherently claimed in another piece – which appears to have Obama administration spin all over it — that economic results “are merging into a straighter line which, while below optimum performance, is moving in a positive direction for the country and for the president in his contest with Republican rival Mitt Romney.”
Yes, Obama’s economic results are merging into a straight line, and it’s flat. At 1.3% GDP growth rate, we’re barely moving. And if we do indeed go off the fiscal cliff on January 1, 2013, then it will point straight down. Our own Congressional Budget Office even says we will fall into a recession next year if we don’t turn things around right away. How come the mainstream media keeps missing these little tidbits of information? Oh, that’s right, Obama has to be re-elected at all costs. Because if he isn’t, those same people would have to admit that they made a terrible mistake back in 2008 for supporting him. And they would never, EVER, admit to that.
Does anyone else here see what I’m seeing???
It seems the quotes from the press listed here, and many I find elsewhere, have less to do with convincing voters than with convincing donors, ..by establishing some sort of “inevitable momentum”. If you want to convince businessmen that they will have to be dealing with Obama’s boys and girls for another 4 years, and that getting on their good side through donations today is a good idea, the pieces mentioned are exactly the sorts of articles I would expect. The lack of donations from the financial sector may be the true target here.
However, eventually, they need to go after actual voters, if they want to hold onto power. Sure, they *will* need money right up to the end. Still, the idea that they can rigidly stay in a money-finding strategy beyond the 5th week before the election is untenable. Do they expect to make a push into vote-getting pieces 2 weeks before November 6th, …and win???
If we do not pay attention, this Gvt will lead this country to a failed social-communist system.
