Dutch: Gore Wrong on Snows of Kilimanjaro
Newspapers and news sites in the Netherlands today extensively broke the news of the findings of a research team led by Professor Jaap Sinninghe Damste — a leading molecular paleontologist at Utrecht University and winner of the prestigious Spinoza Prize — about the melting icecap of the Kilimanjaro, the African mountain that became a symbol of anthropogenic global warming.
Professor Sinninghe Damste’s research, as discussed on the site of the Dutch Organization of Scientific Research (DOSR) — a governmental body — shows that the icecap of Kilimanjaro was not the result of cold air but of large amounts of precipitation which fell at the beginning of the Holocene period, about 11,000 years ago.
The melting and freezing of moisture on top of Kilimanjaro appears to be part of “a natural process of dry and wet periods.” The present melting is not the result of “environmental damage caused by man.”
Professor Damste studied organic biomarker molecules in the sediment record of Lake Challa, near Mount Kilimanjaro, and reconstructed the changes and intensity of precipitation in this part of Africa over the last 25,000 years. They observed an 11,500 year cycle of intense monsoon precipitation.
In the dry period between 12,800 and 11,500 years ago, Kilimanjaro was ice-free.
At the end of this period, a dramatic climate change from very dry to very wet took place — driven by changes in solar radiation — resulting in the creation of an icecap. At the moment, this part of Africa seems to be at the end of a similar dry period, resulting in the disappearance of the famous icecap.
DOSR calls Al Gore’s iconic use of the melting cap of Kilimanjaro “unfortunate” — since it now seems to be mainly the result of “natural climate variations.”
The journal Nature published the highly technical article by Professor Sinninghe Damste’s team.
The website of Elsevier magazine — the Netherlands’ most circulated political weekly — broke the news as follows: “Dutchman discredits Al Gore’s climate evidence.”

Al Gore was wrong about something? But he’s so highly educated, with decades of scientific experience. Plus, Hollywood gave him a statue. There must be some misunderstanding.
Heretofore when someone in politics started pushing an agenda and they stood to become a gazillionaire from it that person would have been shoved out the door. Al Gore is a snake oil salesman with a Nobel Prize. Decency and integrity would have pointed out this vile conflict of interest and called him on it. Why did it not happen with a deafening chorus of outrage? Because he is a red winger with a lot of flacks covering his fraud and his swindle? If you are an international socialist like Mr. Gore you get a free pass to pull off the biggest con game of the century. He should be stripped of the prize and indicted. What did he know and when did he know it.
I noticed that the telegraaf writes it different. It states that not only people but also nature is responsible for the snow melt. It is interesting that’s all.
Why don’t these folks spend some of their time and energy on environmental problems we can all see and agree upon? Industrial waste in China or cleaning up the million square miles of trash in the middle of the Pacific? That isn’t as glamorous, but at least they can explain the cause and effect without resorting to cooking the books.

Also, the amount of ice and snow on Kilimanjaro right now is about the same as it was when Ernest Hemingway wrote his short story “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” in 1935. There is some annual variation, but the overall size of the snowcap hasn’t changed noticeably since before World War Two.
This sort of calls into question the whole “sudden decrease in the last quarter of the 20th Century” thing.
Of course, there’s nothing like getting the facts straight from the horse’s mouth. As regards Al Gore, this series of statements sums it up succinctly;
“Al is a radical environmentalist who wants to change the very fabric of America.”
“He criticizes America for being America- a place where people enjoy the benefits of an advanced standard of living.” (Notably himself- ed.)

These statements are from a 1992 Democratic National Committee memo by Jonathan Sallet to the Clinton campaign, explaining why Gore would be a poor choice for Clinton’s running mate.
You may notice, it didn’t stop Clinton from taking him on. Or the DNC pulling out all the stops in 200 to try to “sue” him into the Oval Office.
It isn’t just Gore’s judgment or contact with reality that is questionable. It’s exactly how devoted the “progressive” movement as a whole is to the facts, as opposed to their dogmas and apparently limitless lust for power.
From all indications, in this race, the facts consistently finish dead last.

The GW people will tell you that carbonic acid endanger coral. Coral excretes limestone to protect it’s self and “acidification of the oceans” endager them. But Limestone that forms in salt water is resistant to HCl. The Stone under Niagara falls is made from oceanic limestone and is very strong. Sea shells are also oceanic limestone. The HCl is your stomic can’t brake sea shells down.
In addition corals are in the fossil record going back before flouring plants evolved. It was flouring plants that lowered the CO2 levels below 1000ppm. Corals have lived with CO2 in the air for a long time and in-fact need it just as all life on earth does.

I like the solar radiation link hypothesis, but I’m more inclined to accept other, simpler explanations. I live at 7,000 ft above sea level in the mountains of the southern Rockies. Snow and ice will sublimate at low pressure (i.e. high altitude) and low humidity (like we experience here in the high mountain desert). In bright sun roads covered in snow and ice will clear and become dry even if the temperature doesn’t get above freezing. They don’t necessarily melt…the snow and ice pass from solid form to gaseous form (like dry ice or moth balls). I never witnessed this while growing up in Michigan (about 300 ft above sea level) but I see it every year here.
Changes in land use around Kilimanjaro (i.e. deforestation) resulted in a lower humidity climate. Kilimanjaro, I believe, is over 19,000 ft in elevation at its peak and the snowfield is never above freezing. Snow and ice have been sublimating from its peak since long before the industrial age. In fact, most of the snow cap had disappeared many years before Hemmingway wrote The Snows of Kilimanjaro in 1936.

The early ’90s were also about the hole in the ozone layer. Two German scientist friends of mine were doing work in labs at my school on new refrigeration systems that would prevent the depletion of ozone from the atmosphere (something to do with freon).
Anybody here knows what’s happened to that ozone layer since? I haven’t followed the issue … been too busy workin’ to pay my rent and for the perfectly good fridge that comes with the apartment and meets my modest needs.

I could swear I read in The P.I.G. to climate change and environmentalism, (I loaned it out so can’t refer to it) that the oceans hold CO2 when cooler and release it when it warms, and the claim in the book was that this was a source of CO2, more so than AGW.

Interesting stuff on solar cycles including the Maunder Minimum. Maybe it helps explain how some of the past temperature changes have been accompanied by the movement of the magnetic poles. I never could see what the connection might be but maybe difference in the charges of the solar radiation mentioned in the article may contribute to that.
The AGW folks do build some of the possibilities for solar forcing into their models and can answer you (apparently) on why condition x can’t be just solar-caused. The skeptics, or is it the deniers? stand accused by te AGWers of being interested only in disproving AGW, not really caring about what IS going on. Does Steve McInintyre really care about climate, or just proving that Jones and Co are wrong? Beats the hell out of me.

The ice cap on Kilimanjaro cannot be “melting” because temperatures there have remained well below freezing. Consequently, the ice is disappearing because of sublimation, a phenomenon wherein, under certain conditions of pressure and temperature, a substance changes from its solid state (ice) directly to its gaseous state (water vapor) without ever assuming its liquid state (water). This phenomenon is responsible for the shrinkage and eventual disappearance of ice cubes in your freezer – and contributes to the shrinkage of glaciers and other exposed ice when there is insufficient snow to replenish. (It is also why frozen CO2 is called “dry ice.”)
This may seem like a trivial distinction, but to use “melting” implies temperatures above freezing, and the hoopla is all about rising temperatures (when they are not).

I just saw a Finnish documentary on this, and MacIntyre was interviewed. He says he began by listening to a few of the AGW types making proclamations that seemed sloppy to him, so he decided as a mathematician to ‘audit’ them, to get their data and perform their experiments and confirm their assertions.
He didn’t start out ‘trying to prove them wrong’, but only suspicious and wanting to be SURE of what they were saying.
Their subsequent vile and deceptive behavior, of course, made him into an adversary of theirs, but it was their fault. He did not begin as an adversary, only as a curious scientist.
Now they’re in ‘full a$$h0le mode’, and he has his back up, as would any sane person. But his math is beyond reproach, and their data is now confirmed to be so sloppy as to be useless in reaching any repeatable conclusion, in spite of which the AGW people INSIST LOUDLY that there is only ONE conclusion possible.

The basic mechanism is, as you state, that seawater “holds” CO2 better when it’s cold, and releases it when it warms up. Which means to get the CO2 out of solution something else has to heat the seawater first. Saying that the CO2 causes the warming when the warming has to precede the CO2 release is a classic example of putting the cart before the horse.

Apparently, professor Damste’s work has not been adequately “peer-reviewed.” If it had been, it would certainly confirm Al Gore’s conclusions.
I still don’t understand how Al Gore can spend millions building a huge home/office, not employ a single green technology in its construction, and still be taken seriously by the green community.
If there are any warm-mongers out there, please explain this to me and don’t tell me about his solar panels because he only installed those after conservative talk radio hosts started pointing out his hypocrisy.

The use of Kilimanjaro by alarmists has long been a yardstick for measuring their scientific integrity or, more appropriately, the lack of it. Many earlier works are consistent with the new study and show that the Kilimanjaro snow cap variations have nothing to do with global temperature changes.

Am I wrong, or did I not read that the prediction is for a rise of .7 of 100ths a degree rise in the next 100 years? What’s the rush? We could delay any action for ten years and not risk too much nor it be too long a delay.
We have time to check and recheck, first the sources, second, their figures, then their computations, then to verify the interpretations of their computations, then for various authorities to repeat and duplicate these experiments, so that there is a greater concensus that gives us more assurance, or that the dissenters are able to prove the reasons for their doubts and stop us from making a huge error that greatly affects the international community.
We’ve been rushed into the Chicken Little approach to a huge scientific problem, THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING. There are 11,588,545 square miles in Africa, for example, but the sparcity of true data to base conclusions on seems inane. How many souces of reliable information, how many recording stations, and for what period of time, do we have for covering 11 million square miles of African mountains, deserts, cities, coastal areas, and deep forests?

I’ve long been saying to anyone who will listen that as a Ham radio operator I pay a lot of attention to sunspot cycles since they strongly influence radio propagation. This past eleven year cycle, which coincidentally corresponds to the lower average temperatures recorded on earth was one of the least active on record. Before that we experienced much more active cycles which was when the global warming craze started. The sun may not be the only determinant in global warming, but it sure makes sense to me that is the biggest. Of course the enlightened ones can’t get research grants, Noble Prizes, Oscars, trips to Copenhagen, or your tax dollars from trying to control the sun’s behavior.

One of the things I have learned in my recent AGW putterings is that their models DO try to account for sunspot cycles, whether accurately, or not, who can say? I think that they put sunspot influence at about 2%. But the underlying question that is becoming more clear to me is: what will happen when the sunspot cycle goes back to normal, or normal high? CO2 is accumulating and the higher it gets the higher we can expect temperatures to be, all things being equal and they never are.
Frankly, I can’t see how we can avoiding burning most of the petro carbon which is readily available for at least the next 20-50 years, because it is just not cost-effective to go any other way. That means that the underlying potential for greater warmth will always be increasing and we’d better hope that whatever “natural” influences caused the MWP do not return full force ON TOP OF our accumulated CO2. I don’t see any way in which we can sequester all the carbon we are releasing which has been stored for millions of years, so I am somewhat fatalistic about the whole thing. Irony of ironies, it turns out that sulfites, which we have been killing ourselves to take out of the atmosphere and they are noxious pollution, actually to some degree offset the greenhouse effect of CO2. Maybe technology can eventually figure out a way to recapture carbon from CO2 on a massive scale, faster than plants can do it, but that is hard to imagine right now.
