It's a safe bet that if you think Rudy is just fine as a Republican, then you probably don't have much trouble with McCain.

Not a safe bet. As a secular laissez-faire capitalist, I saw Rudy as the only one in the field without a theocratic impulse. McCain adds to that a totalitarian impulse (cf. McCain-Feingold).

About the only thing I agree with McCain on is the issue that most others here disagree with him on -- liberalized immigration.

Since Goldwater Republicans seem to have vanished from the scene, I am going to hold my nose and vote for Hillary this year in the hope that the GOP can spend its years out of power to rediscover its roots as the party of freedom. (If it's Obama, I might just write in Thomas Jefferson.)

The GOP has gone insane!

McCain is indistinguishable from the average Dem when it comes to economics or liberties such as free speech.

I can only hope that Hitlery wins in the general election, because she would bring about a civil war, or at least force the republican party to rediscover its ideological roots.

I will never vote for McCain, ever.

Linda:

Romney doesn't go out of his way to piss off Republicans. Romney doesn't specialize in "Straight Talk" that is only aimed at hurting Republicans.

Romney isn't a virulent enemy of free speech by us peasants.

McCain is all those things.

Actually, you're entirely wrong about going from Rudy to McCain. McCain goes out of his way to screw Republicans. Rudy did not. My order was
Rudy
Mitt
Thompson
*Huge gap. Goes from "support" to "would vote for, but only if running against Hillary"*
McCain
*Goes to "Hell will freeze over before I vote for him"*
Huckster

You know something psychologically strange? Everyone knows Romney was far to the left of McCain (even ran to the left of Ted Kennedy on gay rights) and yet they believe Romney's conversation and don't believe McCain when he says he'd put up a border fence. This strikes me as almost delusional thinking. One thing we know about McCain is compared to most politicians he's a man of his word. We don't know anything about the mercurial Romney. But that doesn't stop people from belieing he's the conservative's conservative. I think the shrinks call that "magical thinking."

Good stuff, Stephen. We're FredHeads in this family and will not vote for McCain period. I was shocked to read how vets in general and Vietnam vets in particular in FL fell all over McCain. My hubby is a Vietnam vet and cannot stand him. We both think Republicans have lost their minds.

Congratulations to Giuliani for managing to beat Ron Paul a second time. Clearly Giuliani is much more electable than Paul, which is why I can't understand how he kept losing.
