Don’t Worry: Osama Was Shot in Accordance with Islamic Tradition
Still, I know some of you are concerned about when the Navy SEALs raided Osama’s compound, whether he was then shot in the face in accordance with Islamic tradition. Well, don’t worry; he absolutely was. The very last thing anyone wanted was for Osama to think while he was being killed, “They’re doing this to me because I’m Muslim!” Because, again, that would definitely not be true. So great care was taken, and he was shot in the face in a religiously respectful way.
For instance, none of the Navy SEALs in the raid were eating a pork sandwich as they did it. And none of them had on them any depictions of Muhammad (PBUH). Also, the raid was done between prayer times — not during! And when Osama was shot in the face, he was facing westward. I’m not sure that’s actually religiously important, but if it is, then, yes, he was doing that. And when he was shot, the traditional Muslim expression of “Allahu Akbar!” was shouted — except it was an English translation, so it was something like, “Thank you, Jesus!”
Of course, not everyone interprets the Qur’an the same way, so Osama was also shot in accordance with a few other traditions to make sure all bases were covered. So he was shot eleven times total. But there was a little hitch — he didn’t actually die from the gunshots. It kind of caught everyone off guard, and they were a bit stumped on what religiously respectful thing to do next. But then a quick thinking SEAL grabbed a Qur’an and beat Osama to death with it.
Okay, maybe that wasn’t the best idea in the history of respecting religions, but you can understand the sentiment. How comforting for Osama was it that the last thing he saw was his own holy book? Still, it’s understandable how some would see that as the opposite of being respectful, so the U.S. government would like to say to the friends and family of Osama — those who haven’t been killed or captured — a heartfelt “Oopsie.” And we assure you, the Qur’an was cleaned off, and an imam looked it over to make sure it was not permanently harmed. So no worries there.
Still, it’s a great time for America, and it was was nice to see all those people cheering in the streets Sunday night when they heard the news that Osama had been treated in a way that respected his religion. Because that’s what is important in this modern world, and we work very hard on respecting the culture of those we have to kill for pragmatic reasons. And it’s hard, because people can really take it the wrong way when you storm their compounds and start shooting them. They may think, “Are Americans doing this because they look down on our religion and culture?” And no one wants that; we want to hurt people, not feelings. That’s why all hellfire missiles now have written on the front of them, “This shouldn’t be construed as a negative view of your religion.” And the battle cry of the United States Marines has been changed to “THIS IS WITH THE UTMOST RESPECT!” It’s terrifying when men armed with assault rifles yell it while firing at you … but at the same time, it’s a little comforting.
Again, I have to emphasize that America has no problem with Islam — just with terrorists — many of whom happen to be Muslim … and we think it’s great they’ve chosen such a lovely religion with such a storied culture. That’s not a problem for us… It’s just the murdering. That’s our only beef.
And that’s why everyone involved in hunting terrorists these days is well-trained in being respectful to those they’re gunning down. And we can only hope that the last thing that went through Osama’s head was the thought, “Wow, these Americans killing me sure are respectful of my religious views.”

Sad as it may sound: I –a foreigner, now an American by the grace of God– was witness to a disgraceful act. After phoning JSOC for eight hours (I used to be stationed at Fort Bragg and thought that would doors – and it did!) I found out the answer.
I’m not sure I understand the alleged reasons for giving UBL such a ritualistic sendoff. Being sensitive to certain traditions of the Muslim religion (or of the sea) is one thing, but as far as I can tell Muslims themselves don’t seem to have any great concern over the fate of the bodies of suicide bombers after they kill themselves. Granted bin Laden did not not blow himself to smithereens, but why did anyone find it important to require the Navy to accord him a traditional burial any more than the others, and to make a point of it when revealing the details of the raid? I think it would have been quite sufficient for SEAL Team 6 to have deep-sixed bin Laden without all the rigamarole, giving him the same respect in death as the unfortunate Danny pearl received from his murderers.

Another important aspect of Islam that we should all be comfortable in overlooking is the part where they can kill you if you disagree with anything about them.
Doubting and Handwringing over OBL
The old comedian Jimmy Durante had a stock line, “Everybody wants to get into the act” and now, as Osama bin Laden sleeps with his 72 virgin fishes, it seems everybody wants a piece of the OBL action with many bemoaning the success of America’s elite Navy SEALs.
Reactions from the Muslim world were predictable. Pakistan’s former president Musharraf denounced the American violation of Pakistan’s territorial integrity, as if that country had any true territorial integrity and was anything but a terrorist sanctuary. The government in Islamabad denied any knowledge of the mission, which is probably true since they also had no knowledge that bin Laden was a resident for six years; they called it a “unilateral action,” which is fortunate and all but insured its success.
The Taliban and much of the rest of the Muslim world doubted the 6 foot, 4 inch man who was shot twice and killed in the opulent, million dollar compound and residence then dumped, excuse me, lowered into the Arabian Sea, was actually their hero. They will probably still be doubting Ahmeds even after Osama’s death picture is released; they may contend it is a fake because the Osama they knew and loved had an intact head.
Perhaps the most amusing response came from an unidentified imam at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque who posted an anonymous YouTube threat: “The dogs will not rejoice too much for killing the lions. The dogs will remain dogs and the lion, even if he is dead, will remain a lion. We are a nation of billions, a good nation. We’ll teach you about politics and military ways very soon, with god’s help.”
Big mouth, big nation, and the dead lion sleeps tonight.
The overseas reaction to the successful mission was almost as predictable as the Muslim response.
The UK’s Sky News immediately demanded incontrovertible proof of the identity of the corpse dumped, excuse me, lowered, into the water was indeed the late Osama bin Laden. Germany’s Der Spiegel charged the entire operation was illegal and that, instead of dispatching OBL to the arms of Allah, he should have been captured alive and put on trial before an international tribunal, which would have given him a public platform to spout his venom and instigate his jihadist followers.
At home, the United Nations, not wanting to feel left out, felt compelled to chime in on the issue. . .

You forgot the burial mishap:
As they were easing the highly respected deceased into the Arabian Sea, he became stuck. In fact, I believe it was actually the sheet that became stuck, but he wouldn’t go into the sea, but with a proper Islamic plunger and several additional pulls on the chain.. he finally was on his way to the 40 virgins with a very satisfying whoosh and gurgle.
A second flush as required by Islamic was observed whereupon the ceremony was completed and in fact there need was bad enough they had to draw lots to decide the order…
