I'd rather listen to people who know what they're talking about when they talk about the Constitution and civil liberties. People who know more than political pundits, talk show hosts and average Americans. The A.C.L.U. is full of very smart people who know much much more about our rights than a lot of U.S. citizens will ever know. Why should I listen to you? You don't think there are any innocent people who have been labeled terrorists? These people need others fighting for them. If we want to convict terrorists, they need fair treatment. If there is no fair trial for these people then the whole thing is tainted.
People need to stop seeing the government as a protector and liberator, and more as a necessary evil. Why do we put up with a lot of what our government does, despite what the masses may think? People have forgotten why there is a constitution, why our government is set up the way it is. It was done to avoid tyranny, something that some of society seems to be welcoming.

When the ACLU will defend the right of an average American?
Where was and is ACLU, while Joe the Plumber's civil rights in Ohio was violated?
ACLU, only specialty is defending the rights of terrorists, and pedophiles.

The ACLU before the 1960s supported equal rights under the 14th Amendment, and so the rights of Negroes in the segregated south. After the segregation laws were struck down, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights of 1965, the ACLU reversed its position to support government-enforced racial discrimination (euphemistically called "affirmative action). I then ceased to be a member of the ACLU.
So far as I know, the ACLU, ever so vigilant against any appearance of religion in public institutions, has done nothing about Islam being taught and enforced in public schools, e.g. in California and Minnesota.
I believe that terrorist Bernadine Dohrn (and wife of terrorist William Ayers) is now on the Board of Directors of the ACLU.

Sonnabend,

You put it brilliantly. And yes, it is sad that those of us that are not Americans sometimes feel like we understand and care more about this country than some natives. Maybe it is because we have actually experience life outside the American bubble and therefore value it more.

As for me, I know what it's like to live with bombs going off in the night, and I am willing to make the sacrifices, which to me are very, very small (bag searches, airport security, eavesdropping on my non-important calls...so meaningless) in order to live in peace.
