Climategate: It’s the Totalitarianism, Stupid
Most conspiracy theories are nonsense. But not all, it’s sad to say. A political machine is a successful conspiracy against the public, after all, and we’ve had machine politics in America since the 19th century. Chicago is run by a Democratic machine. Illinois is a machine state.
Those are successful and profitable conspiracies, at least for the insiders. They are dreadful for average citizens, because in a kleptocracy it is corruption that rules the streets. That is why the inner city schools in Chicago still fail their children; it is why drug gangs kill teenagers on the South Side; it is why kids have kids, and just pass on the social pathology; it is why Chicagoans who can afford it move out of the blasted neighborhoods, leaving them to gangsters and their victims; and it is why Governor Blagojevich openly demanded his share of the loot before appointing a U.S. senator to follow Obama.
It is no comfort to know that Barack Obama rose to power in the hustler world of Chicago politics and that Mayor Daley, Michelle Obama, and Valerie Jarrett, all faithful creatures of the machine, decided on all the appointments in this administration.
So what about the Climategate fiasco, the Watergate scandal of our age and time? Well, the global warming fraud is simply machine politics on the international level. Mark Steyn has coined the word “tranzi” for the transnational left that runs the UN, the European Union, most European capitals, and both left coasts of the United States. Tranzis are the political machine of our time.
The good news is that “anthropogenic global warming” — the most costly and widespread scientific fraud in history — just crumbled to fairy dust. We have emails from some of the biggest malefactors to prove it.
Take Dr. Phil Jones, the head of the CRU, the “Climatic Research Unit” at the University of East Anglia. If that’s not familiar, you might remember the IPCC report, where all the tranzis declared their undying faith in anthropogenic global warming. Well, Dr. Phil made up that report, along with about three dozen others, claiming to speak for thousands of scientists around the world. When the journal Climate Research published an article questioning the global warming hoax, Dr. Jones wrote in an email that the journal must “rid itself of this troublesome editor” who dared to be honest. The email reply from Michael Mann, whose “hockey stick” graph was thoroughly discredited by science bloggers some years ago, is as follows:
I think we have to stop considering Climate Research as a legitimate peer-reviewed journal. Perhaps we should encourage our colleagues in the climate research community to no longer submit to, or cite papers in, this journal.
“Off with their heads!” cried the White Queen.
But things got worse when even Geophysical Research Letters (GRL) got a whiff of skepticism. Wrote Fraudocrat Michael Mann:
It’s one thing to lose Climate Research. We can’t afford to lose GRL.
Another “leading climate scientist,” Dr. Tom Wigley, was quite willing to wield the executioner’s axe:
If you think that Saiers is in the greenhouse skeptics camp, then, if we can find documentary evidence of this, we could go through official AGU channels to get him ousted. (AGU is the American Geophysical Union, the publisher of Geophysical Research Letters).
That email was followed by: “The GRL leak may have been plugged up now w/new editorial leadership there.”
It’s just like the Nixon tapes, except that emails are a lot more accurate than John Dean’s memory.
A successful political machine has to have monopoly control over the media, and it must be able to corrupt or coerce all the centers of power — the cops, the courts, the drug mafias, the businesses, the rackets. That’s how the global warming conspiracy operated.
Robert Tracinski has been doggedly pursuing this story, and he points out that the liberal media were in cahoots with the machine:

A team of climate scientists, seeking to remind the negotiators who will hammer out a new climate treaty of what is at stake, has produced The Copenhagen Diagnosis, a summary of the latest peer-reviewed science on the anticipated impacts of human-driven global warming. In an interview, Richard Somerville, a climatologist at the University of California, San Diego, and a past contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said the case for climate change as a serious risk to human affairs was clear, despite recent firestorms over some data sets and scientists’ actions.
Well, good try, Dr. Somerville. And I sure hope you have tenure, because this is going to get very bloody very quickly. You see, it’s not just “some data sets and scientists’ actions.” Those leaked emails are just the tiny tip of a very large and dangerous iceberg that is even now ripping those rivets off your Titanic. The Copenhagen Diagnosis? How about “Diagnosis: Dead On Arrival”?
Nothing is going to happen at Copenhagen except for a lot of scientists and politicians and media types desperately trying to cover their tender parts in front of a mind-boggled world.
Well, Al Gore hasn’t begged for the world’s forgiveness yet, but Georges Monbiot, the Al Gore of the UK, may actually turn out to be an honest man. Or maybe he’s just faster in seeing the Titanic beginning to list to port. According to the Daily Mail, which is enjoying the discomfiture of the British left:
George Monbiot, a leading environmentalist, said Phil Jones should resign from the Climatic Research Unit over leaked emails that appear to show researchers suppressed scientific data. More emails came to light yesterday, including one in which an American climatologist admitted it was a travesty that scientists could not explain a lack of global warming in recent years. In another note, UK researchers dismissed the work of scientists challenging global warming as “crap.” Another appeared to call for pressure on the BBC after a reporter suggested that evidence for rising temperatures since 2001 was thin. In one of the most damning messages, Professor Jones appeared to respond to the death of a climate sceptic with the words “in an odd way this is cheering news!” The leak has been a huge embarrassment to the climate unit at the University of East Anglia, which is a global leader in its field. … Yesterday, Mr Monbiot, who writes on green issues, said the emails could scarcely be more damaging.
Global warming was a fraud, and it has now been exposed.
That little fraud would have cost the taxpayers of the world trillions of dollars, not to mention wrecking their economies with carbon taxes and penalties.
But that’s not even the worst of it. The most important take home lesson is that global frauding was the clear and conscious work of a political machine aiming to steal your money, your liberties, and your country. It was a massive, worldwide attempt at a coup d’etat, and the victims were going to include all the free and prosperous peoples of the world. Hitler had his Reichstag fire. Today’s transnational left had its global warming fraud. The political goal was exactly the same: maximum power through maximum fear.
Melanie Phillips, writing in the Spectator, has it exactly right in a column called “Green Totalitarianism”:
All the manipulation, distortion and suppression revealed by these emails took place because it would seem these scientists knew their belief was not only correct but unchallengeable; and so when faced with evidence that showed it was false, they tried every which way to make the data fit the prior agenda. And those who questioned that agenda themselves had to be airbrushed out of the record, because to question it was simply impossible. Only AGW zealots get to decide, apparently, what science is. Truth is what fits their ideological agenda. Anything else is to be expunged. … [W]hat we are dealing with here is the totalitarian personality. One thing is now absolutely clear for all to see about the anthropogenic global warming scam: science this is not.
We are not out of the woods yet. There is simply too much money involved. This fact alone will discourage those who are benefiting from the global warming crusade from facing the truth. People are often prone to self-delusion and pathetic rationalizations when their own pocketbooks are involved. An incredible number of lucrative careers are in jeopardy. Our opponents are going to do everything possible to limit the damage. We must ceaselessly oppose them at every turn. Sadly, the truth does not always win out in this cruel and sometimes unfair world. This struggle is ultimately a political one—and will be decisively won only on Election Day.

No, we’re NOT out of the woods. What every person who is now “vindicated” for being a “denier” must do is call both of your Senators and express your opposition to the Cap & Trade Bill that will be considered in the next few weeks. Don’t send an email call, or better yet, write a snail-mail letter and send that…but do something we all must.
The money involved in the global warming crusade is mind-boggling. Greed is most assuredly an important factor. Six-figure incomes are often the norm. These advocates stay at the best hotels and enjoy lavish expense accounts. They receive top dollar for a speech or taking part in a seminar. On top of that, they are likely heavily invested in green technology stocks. The money never stops flowing. Think about this for a moment. Wouldn’t most of us be tempted to ignore contradicting evidence threatening our gravy train? After all, the at least metaphorical reality of Original Sin is still alive on planet Earth. This is why we can never assume that the debate primarily revolves around abstract and dispassionate reasoning. Our side may indeed have the best arguments—but do we also have the big dollars to pass around? Nope. I don’t think so.
Martin Anderson, in his book Revolution, argued that conspiracy is “as American as apple pie,” and that, at least in certian cases, it is a good thing. Of course, he was writing about the movement that raised Ronald Reagan to the presidency, rather than an AGW-like attempt to bilk anyone, but he had a point: the movement to elevate Reagan began as a cabal inside the Republican Party that was disgusted with the dominance of the coastal / Rockefellerite crowd and wanted to move the party sharply toward the Goldwater pole. They had to keep their intentions and maneuverings secret until they were strong enough to move — and they very nearly blew it when they tried for the GOP presidential nod in 1976, one election cycle too soon.
But that to the side, a conspiracy of that sort, where many persons agree on a common goal that must be kept secret if it’s to be actualized, occurs in many places and guises. The evil political sort, where personal profit and prestige are the goals and the effectuation of a policy program is the method, though particularly vile, needn’t come to exist through traditional “guttering candle” methods; it can arise simply because a significant number of persons are responding to the same set of incentives in the same way.
In other words, the ultimate villain here is government-funded science. As I am still digesting my repast from the Feast of St. Gluttony, I shall leave the implications to the reader.
I wholeheartedly agree with James Lewis. For many around the globe (and for the current occupants of the White House), the core issue is control. Absolute control.
Whether the red herring is global warming, health care, or some other form of social / cultural engineering, the central goal is always — you betcha — the achievement of totalitarianism.

I only have one quibble with this analysis.
The Titanic took the iceberg on her starboard side, and so went down at the head with a slight list to the right, not the left.
As for the climate gurus, I now have to (regrettably) redefine them as thugs. In the past they could have been mistaken about their conclusions; it has happened before in science.
The Great Dinosaur Debate of the 1870s, in which the wrong skulls ended up on the wrong skeletons in various museums, comes to mind. There was no dishonesty involved, just several wrong assumptions that were in the end disproven by better evidence. However, those wrong assumptions were defended vigorously (some might say “fanatically”) by the experts who had made them, because they saw their professional prestige as being under attack. In the end, however, everybody agreed that the original versions of various “thunder lizards” were incorrect. Diplodocus and Apatosaurus each got their proper heads, Tyrannosaurus Rex got to stand on his hind feet (and regained his relatively tiny forelimbs), and all was right with the world of paleontology (at least until the Creationists started feeling their oats about a decade ago, that is).
The same cannot be said for the AGW cult- for that is what it is. They started out utterly convinced of man-caused global warming, complete with horror stories of rising sea levels, droughts, etc., that came straight from a couple of J.G. Ballard’s novels (“The Drowned World” and “The Burning World”) in the early 1960s. (Incidentally, of Ballard’s “disaster quartet”, these are the least satisfactory “reads”- “The Crystal World” and “The Wind From Nowhere” are far superior, according to Ballard himself.) And when the data stubbornly refused to show that they were right- they fudged it, hid it, or just made stuff up.
Their objective was to give the environmental movement absolute power over the course of human (or at least Western) civilization. The end game being to place the environmentalists and their cronies (almost all on the radical left) in supreme control of all of us, from the individual level on up. The environmental movement, by repeated use of scare tactics (Alar, CFCs, anti-nuclear activism,etc.) had gained an almost unbelievable level of influence by the mid-1990s- but even that was not enough to suit this bunch.
One of the basic traits of totalitarians is the same as that of the average drug addict- the belief that Too Much Is Never Enough. The environmentalists had gained power at a level the old Communist International, the Trilateral Commission, and (Insert Name Of Your Favorite Mythical Conspiracy Group Here) could only dream of. But it still wasn’t enough.
Since the “threat” of a New Ice Age hadn’t been scary enough to give them absolute power in the Seventies, and Nuclear Winter didn’t quite do it in the Eighties, they pulled out all the stops with Anthropogenic Global Warming in the last decade. And, largely thanks to a compliant academia and news media, have come close to grabbing their version of the brass ring- that being a collar around humanity’s throat, with them holding the leash.
A choke-chain collar, to be exact. Because all of their proposed (and attempted-to-be-mandated) “solutions” would cause human suffering on a vast scale. A fact which they simply either do not care about (violating both Commoner’s Law- “Actions Have Consequences”, as well as Campbell’s law- “Work Out The Implications”) or are actively hoping for due to a tooth-sucking dislike of the rest of us and an arrogant belief that they are not only superior, but can enjoy their Utopia much better if the rest of us aren’t around, except for a few Baristas at Starbuck’s. (The latter being the Paul Ehrlich/ “Population Bomb” conceit, that an amazing number of “environmentalists” still support for reasons best explained by abnormal and/or criminal psychologists.)
It takes a very special degree of total disregard for human life and dignity to try to put over a scam like this. Unfortunately, that level of callous disregard for the common man has never been lacking in political circles, which probably handily explains why so many politicians (most of whom are lawyers who wouldn’t know a precipitation level from a panty raid) were and are willing to sign on to the scam.
There is, however, no excuse whatever for SCIENTISTS to behave in this reprehensible way. Politicians are thuggish by nature. Scientists are supposed to concern themselves with facts, period.
Lying is not science, no matter how “noble” its motivation may be in the eyes of those doing it.
This was actually rather obvious long ago. As P.J. O’Rourke quoted in his book “All The Trouble In The World”, one noted environmentalist said back in the Eighties;
“We have to strike a balance between offering up scary scenarios- and actually telling the truth.”
The fellow who said that was none other than then U.s. Senator Al Gore. An “inconvenient truth” if there ever was one.
What has been missing in the AGW “cult of doom” has been the “truth”- i.e., actual facts. Not because they couldn’t find them- because the facts invalidated their dream of control.
It’s time we stripped them of their self-anointed aura of infallibility, and altruism. They are simply power-hungry demagogues who seek to achieve by environmental propaganda what previous generations of would-be tyrants failed to do by political demagoguery, or force of arms. And in doing so, they’ve come very close to creating their own church, complete with their own version of the Spanish Inquisition.
It’s time the lot of them were defrocked, permanently.

Global warming is dead scientifically, but very much alive politically and in the population at large. Witness the fact that Obama is still going to Copenhagen, and still has John Holdren as his science czar. Politicians and the media have too much invested in the charade to pull the plug.
After years of AGW propaganda the population as a whole accepts it as proven fact.
I was at Thanksgiving dinner at my sister-in-laws yesterday and not one person other than myself and my wife knew anything at all about the climategate scandal. It just hasn’t gained any traction at all yet. “Why haven’t I heard about it?” was the common response along with looks of skepticism.
We need to get a LOT more exposure to begin turning this thing around and we need to get it quickly. This is a project for the Tea Parties in the U.S. to take up.
An anecdote that burst my balloon yesterday. At our family Thanksgiving celebration, I talked about Climategate, some of the details of the emails and computer code revelations and even the brilliant video featuring the Michael Mann parody.
My family is a college-educated conservative crowd and yet:
1. None had heard of Climategate nor the details of the leaked emails.
2. No one had ever heard of Mann or Jones or the Hadley CRU.
3. Their interest level was lukewarm at best.
I believe we skeptics may be guilty of viewing ourselves as more representative of the mainstream than reality would suggest. I also think more people are less worried about global warming but couldn’t give you a reason why.
Global Warming is Marxism — “By Any Means Necessary”
It’s long past time to pull most academics’ careers out of the public trough–it’s too corrupting to their disciplines, too tempting to the totalitarian mindset–the default position of most intellectuals, whether they cop to it or not.
It’s time the right took a few pages from the leftist playbook. The Copenhagen conference should be met by a massive protest. Anyone in the mood for a green tea party?
We have in the United States been content to protest policy through the tea party movement. It’s high time we started demanding some heads. Let’s see which of these criminals is the first to cop a plea, and spill the beans to save his hide. Not a John Dean, but a Green Dean.
We need to bring enough pressure through the grassroots and the alternative media to force the MSM out in the open. We have eleven months before the mid-terms to make our case. Better yet, it’s time to force our representatives in congress to make the case. Investigations, hearings, indictments . . . all of it.

The internet is a powerful way of getting information out into the world but the climate scandal shows once again that the power remains in the MSM. The NYT (Prosecute the hackers) and the WaPo (Aren’t scientists acting like teenagers) set the agenda and narrative. Sites like PJM or even NRO can get the information into the public domain but they can only change the debate at the margin. As long as the MSM buries the story the AGW scam will go on.

The scam called evolution has been the most successful fraud ever perpetrated and it continues to this day.
Aside from the dinosaur skeletons the same mis assembly of bone parts was applied to Piltdown Man , Java Man and Lucy Man.( Plus quite a bit of fakery too) The only evidence provided by these finds is bones do have a greater possibility of fooling scientists than any other discovery.
The creatioists have posed some legitimate questions which evolutionists dismiss. How can DNA be added in species which are supposedly ” evolving”? How does evolution account for the exixtence of irreducibile complexity ? Why are there no examples of transistional forms in the fossil record. Evolution would have required millions of failed forms before the “correct ” surviving model evolved.
The hoax of evolution is our biggest swindle but AGW might be the warm up act for the next really big fraud expose.

I think justasimplepatriot @ #9 has it right: People who should know, don’t. Not only the MSM, but even other internet sites I read have not convered Climategate in any real depth. I applaud PJM and all the contributors for all they have done since the story broke. PJM has to keep up the drumbeat because this is too much at stake to let it go. What has happened with AGW characterizes all the moves of the left to restrict our freedoms: Lying, conspiring and disparaging the intelligence of your opponents.
eon @ #7 is pretty spot-on except for his disparagement of “Creationists.” WRJonas @ #15 raises good issues on that point. It should be realized that Darwinism is no less a religion than AGW has been. Scientists who question Darwinism face the same kind refusal by major journals to publish their findings. Michael J. Behe comes to mind here. One does not have to be a creationist to realize there is something fundamentally inadequate about the Darwinian hypothesis’ attempt to explain evolution. Cells are far too complicated to change randomly without the cell self-destructing; so something else must be at work, but we do not know what it is.

Generally unix administrators favor…unix, think that unix is awesome, and discuss ad infinitum things relating to unix. For them, unix is the end all be all. (please avoid talking to them, for your own sake…)
Now, if you were told that unix was the way, the truth, and the light and that all shall surely perish for lack of unix, that you are a mere mortal who does not get to enter the server closet and see the log files of truth, you might get suspicious about the fact that ever increasing budgets were going to some…

This is no scam. The real criminal is the hacker who went looking for something in desperation, and the desperation is revealed by Wingerville believing they found it. The sad part is the so-called MSM reports it at all and frames the whole climate change issue in a real question. They’re co-opted by a sort of soft affirmative action for conservatives with sadly wrong positions that don’t deserve the light of day. This is why they have no papers in a scientific journal. Because their perversion of the science isn’t science! Hello. The measured affects of global warming can’t be faked. Only morons would think so. Now what to do about is another matter. You say nothing. Fair enough. I don’t agree with it, but you’ll be swept into the dustbowl of history just as you were in the last election. Nothing will stop it.

since it is a TOTALITARIAN project, its supporters will NOT relent “just” because the truth has been revealed.
No form of totalitarianism lacks HORDES of supporters today (as always): the most bloody horrors have happened…and still you have the nazis talking about MAO and CASTRO and SOCIALISM etc. etc. etc.

The catastrophic condition of our schools becomes evident when we read the trolls’ comments:

if you can’t show a statistical correlation between the increase in CO2 emissions and global warming, the hypotheses you are supporting dies.
A statistical correlation would NOT anyway PROVE anything, but it would open the way to discuss the idea that human activity influences the temperature of the planet.
Without the evidence of a correlation (that is a mathematical value, not a word from the armory of rhetoric), your whole hypotheses is transformed into IDEOLOGY.

The release of these emails has broken the back of global socialism. I can see the arrival of some of the African nations now, does this mean we don’t get our check for 200 billion. Here is the latest wonder of “peer review” .. the latest Mann paper has some of the data inverted. Seems they used the X-ray density data instead of temperature. The proxy relation is that it should have been inverted, but Mann and his co-authors and the “peer review”-ers let it go by without inverting the data before using it as a temperature proxy.

Physics enables space exploration and medical equipment such as MRIs, for example. Meteorology predicts weather which has all sorts of beneficial applications. Chemistry provides us with new materials and biology with health insights and improved crop productions. All of these things plus countless others.
Yet climate science has no “product.” The outcomes of climate modeling cannot be used to do anything except what is being done with them – promote statist control of ever-expanding slices of national economies to conform to a transnationalist ideology.

R7 – Mark York appears to have designated himself as the global warming religious police. I keep seeing he and a few others in various blogs / comments sections this past weekend trying to delegitimize / counter any comments critical to the religion. They all use the same methods. First attack those as not having sufficient scientific backgrounds (as if you need a scientific background to see manipulated data and a concerted effort to push a view that’s eroding fast in the face of reality). Second point to the high quality “peer reviewed” links that promote the religion (you know, the same hacks that have now been caught manipulating the data, career assassinating naysayers, blackballing critics and even blackballing scientific journals who don’t adopt / accept the religion in total).
I would encourage everyone to remind the MSM at every opportunity about their willful ignorance of the climategate conspiracy.
One interesting way to do that is through Sidewiki from Google. It allows you to leave a running commentary of your own choosing on so-called news sites like cnn.com
Also, don’t forget to mention climategate on twitter and even doing google searches on the word can help make it a trending topic.

Carbon is a “green house gas”, which means it traps heat. I.e. the more carbon we put in the atmosphere the more heat is trapped. The Carbon we use was trapped into the earth via some process (plants take it out of the atmosphere and trap it for instance) and now we are putting more in. It is simple math. More carbon in atmosphere = trapped heat in atmosphere. Carbon formally trapped in earth = carbon now in atmosphere. How simple can you make this?

Your rants don’t mean much. This is all about a premise…that there is a direct correlation between CO2 increases and global warming.
(now climate change…how convenient). If there is any doubt, about the methodology in arriving at that conclusion it should be double checked, not by Climatologists but independently. If said Climatologists created the models (ie wrote the software, massaged the data and did the statistical analysis, then it begs the question, are they best qualified to do that aspect of the study)
To me that is what the emails expose, and some are much more relevant than others. Any process models around mitigation strategy presuppose the link between CO2 increase and warming. I submit that at some point CO2 may be a problem(for other obvious reasons)…cooking the science now is a little premature based on the T data…and focusing on CO2 solely, is plain bad strategy based on the lack of conclusive evidence
using CO2 as the villain is convenient, hence the title of the article.

If you are a real scientists you’ll stop saying “liar liar pants on fire” to all of us skeptics (i.e., true scientists who aren’t impressed with your shenanigans) and start considering that the non-science public doesn’t trust your sacred “true scientists” anymore. At least not enough to turn over control of most of our freedom and wealth.
Mark York – you say “your side will lose” and “this is war”, if you truly are a scientist you should know that true science (not “true science”) is not about winning or losing but about finding the truth or getting as close to the truth as we can given our current technological state. You kind of give away your motivations with that statement. Your in it only for the politics not for the truth (not for the science). When you say “your side will lose” does this mean we’ll all be ruined professionally, backballed, or we will finally see all the data and be convinced that your science and “theories” are closer to the truth than we thought? I could live with finding out that theories are sound based on the freely provided independently reviewed data, assumptions, models, etc.. It seems you don’t want to get to that stage. You only want to shut up all of us who don’t trust your side that’s been hiding data, methods, blackballing naysayers, and scientific journals that aren’t on board with your side. if you are not slopping it up at the public trough and you have some reservations about the “consensus” of AGW you are excluded from the peer review process. Therefore: we have achieved complete consensus of the science-whores.
