(On December 31, 2009, NASA finally provided the Competitive Enterprise Institute with the documents I requested from them with an FOIA in August 2007. My request asked NASA to release their internal discussions regarding a series of errors in their claims of warming U.S. temperatures caught by Steve McIntyre. NASA had stonewalled my request for more than two years.)
A principal theme of these NASA emails — and one that is illuminating in its exposition of advocacy and hypocrisy at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) — is the insistence that what turned out to be a false warming of 0.15 degrees in the U.S. record is meaningless, even if covering merely seven years (2000-2006, as opposed to a decadal or longer trend).
In an August 7, 2007, email from GISS’ Dr. Reto Ruedy to GISS director Dr. James Hansen, Ruedy says the correction had “little impact” on the U.S. record. In an email to New York Times environmental reporter Andrew Revkin on August 9, 2007, Hansen characterizes the error as having been “well within the uncertainty bar we give” for the U.S. and “entirely negligible” globally. In an email to Dr. Donald E. Anderson — program manager, Earth Science Enterprise, NASA Headquarters — on August 14, 2007, Hansen used the terms “minor,” “negligible,” and “less than the uncertainty” to describe the previously touted warming which was now shown to be an error.
This did not explain why the warming merited all of the hype in the preceding seven years.
Further, a week later Hansen privately wrote to Revkin that “[we] can add an uncertainty” to actually do what Hansen had been spinning to Revkin that they already do:
Indeed we already include a bar at several points on our temperature curve, but we note that it only includes the largest source of uncertainty in the temperature change (incomplete spatial coverage).
To add some further, curious texture to Hansen’s remarkably flexible view of what magnitude of warming is meaningful, note how in an August 14, 2007, email to GISS’ Makiko Sato and Ruedy, Hansen describes a claimed, much smaller warming between 1934 over 1998 of 0.02 degrees Celsius — which Hansen’s own 2001 paper had shown to be 0.5 degrees Celsius, a full half degree — as being “slightly warmer.” It is fair to assume from the record of NASA GISS that, because 1934 is an older year, the disparity must be downplayed. But it is also rather troubling that Hansen had forgotten his own work, serially rejecting the notion that he ever said 1934 was warmer than 1998, and his newer, operative claim that the difference is actually only 0.02 degrees Celsius, “much less than the accuracy” of their instruments. Therefore, he says: “Of course, scientifically, this is all nonsense.”
There is indeed nonsense in the various double standards that the emails reveal about NASA GISS, over how much and what kind of anomalies (warm or cool) are meaningful. Though not as he suggests.

“Both missives revealed NASA’s new preferred tactic of not emphasizing the impact of U.S. temperatures in favor of emphasizing global temperatures, in order to diminish the importance of their U.S. temperature problem. This reveals a bias towards advocacy and activism as opposed to objective science, a highly questionable practice for a taxpayer-funded science office staffed with career employees.”
Brilliant detective work Mr. Horner. Your claim is right on the money. What you have found is very similar to the weak character shown by Phil Jones when he decided to use the “trick” to “hide” the divergence between thermometer records and tree-ring records, a divergence that spanned at least 50 years, and chose not to show the tree-ring numbers on the famous hockey stick graph. When presented with a problem in the numbers and a problem in their own past positions, the NASA people chose to change the topic rather than investigate the matter as scrupulously honest (or dedicated) scientists would have done.
Thank you, Mr Horner for your efforts. I think any objective observer would see that these scientists have abandoned any sense of their own objectivity and operated within a bunker mentality. They do seem to want to have it both ways: the temperature record matters in the US until it doesn’t. I find it frightening to see such collaboration and collusion amongst these scientists but it also disturbing to see it in play with the press, be it with the likes of Revkin or Borenstein. At the very least, they are seen as an arm of the messaging effort. These are propagandists not journalists.

FYI James Hansen had a colleague at NASA back in 1970 who used a model created by Hansen to forecast the coming ice age. Hansen has said that it was his colleague and not him who forecast the ice age. See http://climateprogress.org/2007/09/27/james-hansen-ice-age-myth/
A commenter called Tom says that Hansen was irresponsible in saying the model had been misused. Read Hansen’s defense and the comments accompanying it. Apparently NASA has a history of being dead wrong when it comes to “Climate Change.” (Gotta love that phrase – it’s always right because the climate is always changing.)

All I want is for everyone to keep screaming out loud mad about this issue. I do not want this to die off as a non-issue news report. Investigative journalism has been lost to the legacy media outlets & now we are totally dependent on people like Mr. Horner, PJTV, talk radio, & even Glenn Beck, outrageous as he may be at times.
The world has been had. The UN is using the Climate Change issue as a means of developing a world-wide lucrative income stream of taxation so they can create what many have told us for decades… one world government. Years ago people who said this were relegated to the nut job category. Yet in Copenhagen the UN said they needed the climate taxation system to create the funding needed for global governance (in layman’s terms, thats a one world global government). So now the cat is really out of the bag. Set up global government under the authority of the UN (heaven forbid), with folks like Gore making billions selling or trading in fake & useless carbon credits. Gore left office w/ $3 to $5 million in assets. Ten years later he is worth over $100 million. He is a principle trader in European carbon credit trading. That system has resulted in NO reduction in carbon accumulation & the system is under investigation for its fraudulent activities. Imagine how corrupt the system will be once America is in it w. literally billions to be made in these trading schemes?!
Hansen, Mann, Jones, & so many others who have been peer-reviewing each others work trying to make each others work look credible. I suggest there is no real independent review of almost any of their work. I suggest many of these folks & numerous other allies dependent on research grants, federal money, foundation money, etc., are all working together to make sure all of their works look like they are factual & accurate. Yet we now know much of what has been done is corrupted beyond comprehension. Russia recently complained that surface temperature station readings for Siberia were omitted from the calculations of global temperatures. How can that be since Siberia covers a huge expanse of the globe? Guess those temperatures were just too cold to count in the tally since they would have made the warming, go away totally!!!
The list of errors, omissions, manipulations, concoctions, adjustments, & outright lies, is growing longer each day. And perhaps by themselves they are meaningless. However, taken together when three, four, five, and many more are added together and what we have is a totally corrupted science we are told is indisputable consensus. Over 31,000 actual scientists have signed a petition challenging climate change, yet our president ells us his 2,500 (which includes the likes of Hansen, Jones, Mann, etc.,) are ‘more’ believable!
The scam is revealed & in my not so humble opinion, this is the time to demand there are independent multiple investigations, including criminal investigations with racketeering being a focus, because now we must demand those seeking to make global policy fess up to their lies, & face prison time for those same lies. Global government means less freedom, it means higher taxes. it means loss of sovereignty, & it looks like this means people would become slaves to a state & that state would be run by those who we now believe may be liars, who have perpetrated this hoax!
