I recall eating butter in Ohio in 1965. It had a flavor that I don't get these days. What did happen, pasteurization?

You only need to go to Ohio or Wisconsin or Missouri to get good fresh homemade butter. Look for folks riding in horse drawn carriages and you will find good bread and butter, not to mention the jams ect....They are here you have to just find them.

John S;
What planet are you living on? The "hurt no feelings" liberal consensus would stop every one of those initiatives before they got out of the pre-proposal stage. That consensus is unfortunately like the apocryphal mule that has to be smashed across the forehead with a 2x4 just to get its attention. What it will take to do that, 9/11 having failed, is frightening to imagine.

The mesh of denial and pretense that constitutes modern isolationism is as flexible and resilient as it is irrational. Incompatible arguments and information are wrapped, bounced, and thereafter ignored.

The only gap I've seen so far is a certain anxiety about being labelled "serial back-stabbers" if the forces are pulled. The underlying reason, believe it or not, seems to be that it implies they have been insensitive to the feelings of the troops, which is Crime #1 in the liberal Ethos. (It wouldn't rank up there with the Republicans, Bush, and America in general being so insensitive to the delicate sensibilities of the unfortunately emotionally anachronistic Muslim world, but still too much to bear easily.)

But in the end, as I said, it's going to take some hellacious event to drive home the actual implacability of the Core Opposition, the Global Jihad. Such unpersuadable and diplomacy-immune enemies are not conceivable or creditable in the liberal universe.
So belief will come very hard, at great cost to everybody.

BTW;
dougf, agree fully. With both posts.

When your correspondent is in New York, have him (her?) stop at Fairway on Broadway sometime between 8 and 9 am; 4 different bakeries are represented, including the store's own kosher bakery. Eight of the breads are "off the charts"; at least 5 others are world class.

As to the butter, it might not be the best to ruin the food of life with empty saturated fat calories; instead, to get the true goodness of the bread, just a thin slice of a beefsteak tomato and some salt and pepper.

I disagree with the premise that no Republican can be elected president next year. Giuliani has a good shot if he can survive the primary. Thompson may also have a shot. The key will be communication of ideas to the electorate. Giuliani and Thompson both have excellent communication skills. And part of what the Republican nominee needs to communicate effectively to win is the high price we will pay if we tuck tail between our legs and run from Iraq.

The correct term is separationism. separation of the West from Islam. halt Muslim immigration, get out of Iraq - let them kill each other, only help our real friends which is none of the Muslims except maybe the Kurds, cutoff the jizya to the Pals, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.

Restrict the da'wa, and get aggressive about deporting Muslim troublemakers who are not yet citizens, spy on the mosques and declare a lot of Muslim orgs. like CAIR, ISNA and MSA enemies and pursue shutting them down. Lots more you can do, lots. How about taking a hose to our universities and wipe out all those Muslim sympathizers and anarchists.

It is time for the West to get defensive and separate itself from Islam, separation not isolation.

I don't know what you people are talking about. My Whole Foods carries plenty of imported French butter, plus several domestic artisan brands that are equally good.

one can oppose democracy building and not be isolationist.

the grand dream of self selected islam governments was no more practical than the same goals in S.E. asia.

we need to seperate the goal from the idealogy. it was one thing to halt communist hegemoney, and another to try to transform vietnam, laos and cambodia.

same now in the middle east. the issue is sanctuary states. period. stick to that, its winnable, try to dial in a future government, auto loss.

While fine examples of bread of all persuasions can be had in New York City, I would have to concur about the butter. Tasteless wads of fat are all that can be had from Sea to Shining Sea. Nothing that even compares to the glorious stuff easily gotten in France.
