Independent political candidates for office in 2006–and, possibly in 2008–are the special focus for this episode of Blog Week in Review. One of the most reknowned “Freerangers” running this year is humorist/musician Kinky Friedman whose candidacy for Texas governor is hot. As a result, this week’s panelists have a distinctly Texas-flavor: Jonathan Gurwitz, editorial writer for the San Antonio Express News and contributor to the Wall St Journal’s editorial page and Ed Clements of KLBJ-AM Radio in Austin Texas and of the television show Friday Night Lights.

As usual, Austin Bay moderates; Ed Driscoll produces. Brought to you by Volvo USA.

  1. If Kinky Friedman’s candidacy is hot, it is only hot by virtue of its context within a lackluster field.

This is a man completely bereft of original ideas who will not make any important progress towards more limited government for Texas if he is elected.

His positions often contradict one another and consititute a mere mish-mash of left-wing and right-wing positions.

Calling oneself an “independent” and generally making an ass of oneself are no substitute for a consistent, pro-freedom political philosophy, a willingness to clearly articulate it, and a desire to implement it.

Have you seen this Kinky Friedman video? Pretty funny and disturbing as well.

I’m a conservative and I’ll be voting GOP but I think Kinky is a smart fellow. I’m glad he ran, not only because he introduced interesting topics but also because he’s fun.

I also thought this was a good podcast. The moderator was excellent and the guests knew the subject.

One of the reasons’s Kinky’s got my vote is because of his Libertarian stance against the encroaching nanny state, specifially smoking bans which hurt small business, and the Gestapo type raids by the TABC as part of the neo-prohibitionist anti-drinking campaign.
