Barack Obama: A Man Apart

Denying America's exceptionalism, the president seeks to recondition our national instincts.

My contention is not that the president is devoid of conviction. In fact, his political tilt is decidedly to the left — the hardcore left. My assertion is different. I believe this president doesn’t understand the rhythms, the pulse of the American people. He is not merely outside the mainstream. He doesn’t even recognize it. He is a basketball player who has been asked to step up to the plate and bat.

At first I thought his initial popularity would carry him through to a second term. But as each day passes and the false, almost inappropriate gestures register with the people, Americans are beginning to recognize this president as a man apart. He is our stranger in a land he doesn’t understand.

Americans are not warlike; nor does imperial ambition fill their soul. They have done almost nothing for which daily apologies are necessary. Their blood soaks the beaches of Normandy; their graves litter European towns. And their fortune saved millions from the plight of destitution. Americans do not appreciate a man so removed from their history, so out of tune with the American experience, that he reflexively expresses regret for the very conditions that should engender pride.

Perhaps this president will learn. But I am not confident that can happen. His life experience without a father in his home and a mother seeking adventure abroad was unstable. His closest associates vilified the nation he now leads. Is it any wonder his wife said she could take no pride in America till now? The past is to be rejected. Milestones in history are erased from memory as storage, cast aside as unnecessary.

This is a unique moment in our history. It is certainly the only time in my life when our national instincts are being reconditioned. From a nation that was a model to the world, we are now told that superiority is unbecoming, a hindrance for the emergence of global egalitarianism.

President Obama, as a man apart, may attempt this recasting of America. But, as I see it, America is not yet ready for his experimentation and, most likely, never will be.

  1. I believe President Obama actually thinks that unilateral concessions to our real and putative enemies will result in reciprocal responses.

That, to be gentle about it, is not supported by the evidence. As a certain great American patriot said of another seeming international bumbler, if he were just stupid, the laws of probability would result in his being right every now and then.

(The seeming international bumbler was George C. Marshall; the great American patriot was Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin. As for who most memorably called the unfairly vilified McCarthy a great American patriot, that was Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts.)

As regards the Obamunist attack on American exceptionalism, be not afraid. Obama is merely the most recent in a long line of flacksters for that tripe. Americans have learned not to take a statement as gospel truth merely because it comes from a politician’s lips; not even a Celebritarian politician lauded in song and story. Indeed, I’d say we’re approaching the opposite pole of political credibility: the one expressed by the maxim, “Never believe anything political until it’s been officially denied.”

  2. 2. Deceitful Change.

Barrack Hussein Obama is out of sync with the entire world, not just the United States of America.

He is a man that considers himself better, smarter and swifter than everyone else; in particular leaders of other countries if nothing else than they were not smart enough to be elected as the President of the United States of America.

Mr. Obama considers that position; now his to be omni present, omni powerful and in the right hands; again his – unstoppable.

His is a personality that challenges the world to assemble and mount whatever forces necessary to destroy him; along with the United States of America because of it’s reputation of evilness.

Mr. Obama’s election is a living testament to the miserable failures of our nation to live up to the standards of collective and shared education, morals, religious conviction and individual responsibility that built our nation to begin with.

In the position of a black man having been handed the gifts of unbridled trust and faith by a white majority nation, Obama’s most atrocious and viscous betrayal is the destruction of the only “first chance opportunity” his own race; the blacks had when it came to their dreams, their hopes, their futures and their destiny as equal American citizens in all respects.

Here, the loss of hope that blacks everywhere wear on their faces these days is almost beyond unbelievable. Particularly the elders; who now know that they will not likely live to see another black man, but a decent and good man restore what Mr. Obama has taken away.

Your words lead me to see a light at the end of the tunnel that President Obama hovers over. As you say, “As an American, I am not yet ready for his experimentation and, never will be.” Thank you Mr. Herbert London for calming my soul.

“Obama is merely the most recent in a long line of flacksters…”

Don’t we wish he was “merely…”

He’s got dozens of nutty Eugenicists and Communists “czars” running around in your White House as a shadow government. A few strutting narcissists manage the world’s largest economy in operatic hilarity while we suffer daily barrages of Big Brother lectures.

It’s WAAAYtoo late. Their ball began rolling down hill 40 years ago while you slept. They’ve now got three generations behind them. When it all doesn’t go the way they think it should, they will pull out the guns and MAKE us do it their way, just like Mao, Ché, Pol Pot.

    And you think he’s “merely…”?

I have never seen so many commenters in so many places agreeing on the character traits of a sitting US President. Terms like narcissist, egotist, naive, vain, fellow traveler, unrealistic, Marxist, anti-American, America hating, bumbler, and now man-apart all seem to be, or are becoming, standard references for the Messiah. I would add diabolical and provide his behavior towards Honduras and giving Mary Robinson a Medal of Freedom as proof.
But this obscures the real problem which is that he has the support of 50% of the American public. The most worthwhile terms to describe this fact are all profane as well as tragic.

I have been reading Herb London’s columns and commentary for over two decades and remember when he ran for mayor in NYC. He is a brilliant man whose billiance is the source of envy and vitriol for many. This article only adds to my opinion of him. Of all the words written about the 44th President London’s comparison to Camus’ “The Stranger” really is the absolute best. Obama is a man apart and some in the Mastadon Media hinted at this before the election but put a lid on it for the sake of Obama’s victory. Remember the comments? Do we really know who he is? What does he stand for? We all know now. But thank you Herb. It’s nice to know you are still around, making a difference, and contributing mightily to the public debate.

    P.S. Herbert London,

You moderated out my best rant ever.

Therefore, I will sadly find you in contempt of my free speech and because of said causal…there is an ‘effect’.

Whomever you are, I find that I cannot comment on any further blogs of yours.

Have a nice day whilst it lasts,

President Obama, as a man apart, may attempt this recasting of America. But, as I see it, America is not yet ready for his experimentation and, most likely, never will be.

The optimist in me says, “Hear, hear! America imbues freedom, she will always be a beacon in the dark! We celebrate individual liberties, self-governance, and abhor tyranny, madmen, and despise jaded self-loathing American politicians.”

The pessimist says, “Wait a few generations, these same self-loathers will brainwash our children with pro-Marxist, anti-American, anti-Christian, and anti-Capitalist dogma.”

The president provides a window into the souls of many who are men and women apart…

But this obscures the real problem which is that he has the support of 50% of the American public. The most worthwhile terms to describe this fact are all profane as well as tragic.

Curiously the latest poll was 49% approval but only 43^ would vote for him again. I think we need to take a long term view. I thought it would take 18 months to get to where we are now. Given that he still has the unqualified support of 90% of the media, the fact that he has fallen below 50% is surprising and encouraging. At some point the media will get tired of being his lap dog and his support will plummet.

President Obama is not part of the real word; he lives in ObamaLand where Unicorns eat rainbows, mermaids are cannibals, & roses smell like a sewer. All one has to see is Chicago for Senator Obama’s results. President Obama’s awful results will be maginifed & the One blames everyone under under the sun except himself.

  14. 14. tanstaafl

Denying America’s exceptionalism, the president seeks to recondition our national instincts.

He has no right to deny anything about this country, no right to apologize for this country abroad or anywhere else.

He has taken his own simplistic ideological formulation, “all countries are equal” and mis-applied it, attempting to plaster the notion, like a band-aid, all over the world.

He figures that makes him look & sound enlightened.

(apparently, that ideologically bent guy who heads up a group of 5 dweebs in Norway, agrees)

Obama doesn’t appear to appreciate or even understand the depth of consideration and analysis that went into this country’s formulation (e.g., “why oh why, asks Barack, hasn’t the Supreme Court wandered into those murky waters of “redistributive change” and “economic justice”* ?

*maybe they understand, unlike you Barack, that that isn’t their job

“President Obama is a man apart. He seems to equate power with arrogance, pride with willfulness, and exceptionalism with dominance.”

And he likes what he sees and he’s gonna git him some.

  16. 16. tanstaafl

As a so called “progressive”, Barack Obama figures there is no problem that can’t be solved by the federal government.

He doesn’t appear to be the least bit daunted that his infamous Porkulus (“a personal slush fund”)thus far has paid for only somewhere around 30,000 (mostly government) jobs at a cost of around $72,000/job. Or that unemployment is way beyond where he said his egregious spending program would check it. (“it’s working, it’s working!” Biden is assigned to shout)

Obama refers to those rights retained by the citizen against the federal government (those pesky freedoms outlined in the Bill of Rights) as “negative” liberties.

Per his worldview, positive liberties (aka government provided liberties) must be exemplified by those poor people in Detroit standing in line week before last for their government handouts. (“who’s giving you this money?” “Obama’s giving us this money” “where did Obama get it?” “I don’t know, but he’s gonna give it to us!”)

On a slightly lighter note, here is a tiny peek into the “progressive” mind, how your kings & queens infesting DC at the moment “think”…

    It’s somebody else’s fault !

Was the failure of the Obama myth in obtaining the Olympics for Chicago a preview of what will come of all these poorly conceived ventures? Do Russia’s recent statements on Iran and the use of sanctions concern them? Iran’s treatment of protesters? Have these events caused him any pause at all? What do the president and his advisors see in these tea leaves besides more hope and change?

What I recall (I read it 100 years ago) of L’étranger as Meursault wandered on the beach in North Africa, was that Camus’ protagonist didn’t give jack sh!t about the death of his mother.

So, yeah, a man apart, Barack Obama didn’t give jack sh!t about a woman who took it upon herself to look after him while daddy goofed off in Kenya and mommy goofed off in Indonesia.

Obama has thrown “Toots” under the bus at least twice, once, while she was still alive, tho’ aged and very sick, when he tried to make some idiotic point about race & “white peoples’ fears” (henry louis gates would have approved) to after she had died, when he self-righteously proclaimed against Sarah Palin’s charge of a death panel, Barack sayin’ as how he had a grandma and hadn’t wanted Toots to die or some totally stupid point like that.

(although, of course, she probably shouldn’t have gotten that hip replacement procedure, Ezekiel Emanuel, John Holdren, Tommy Daschle & Robert Reich, Obama’s resident eugenicists, wouldn’t have approved)

    Cold, baby, cold.

Why should Barack Obama respect people in a country where he gets away with such BS ?

  21. 21. goy

    Accurate and concise.

And it’s about the 62,215th accurate, concise article I’ve read on the same subject.

    We get it.

PJM and every other nominally conservative medium online and off has been filled with similarly accurate and concise articles for over a year now.

    We get it.

Endless, Reactionary Critique – and a kindergarten-level comment mechanism, so readers can ‘vent’ – is fine. But unless all this goes out to a VERY wide audience, it eventually becomes tedious, pointless carping. That’s the one (and only) point on which Moho is absolutely correct, IMHO.

At this point, PJM is now preaching to the choir and providing a soap box for trolls, and needs to switch gears soon if it wants to make a difference rather than just sell Google Ads. Time has run out. When the government next revises its deficit and debt projections into the $2T range, and interest rates start going up, the rest of the world is going to do more than just replace the Dollar as its reserve currency.

Time has run out. And countless articles reacting to the same daily news cycle B.S. that every other medium reacts to, in an attempt to “raise awareness”, aren’t making a substantive difference. In the end, exposing and defunding ACORN didn’t change anything. In the end, Rush Limbaugh can take care of himself. In the end, repeated lists outlining BHO’s fascist game plan haven’t changed anything. The government – which is the problem – has simply doubled down on its plan to subsume our entire economy and fly it into a mountain.

PJM needs to find and commit to a solution – a way out – and start promoting it.

Where are the banner ads pointing to support for http://www.doughoffmanforcongress.com/?

Where are the prominent buttons linking to contact info for “Your Representative“, to tell them what they need to DO on issues like socialized medicine, cap-and-tax-and-spend, illegals, etc.?

These things are just not that difficult.

If “Conservatism 2.0” is only ever going to amount to a long list of carping articles, it’ll never get out of Beta and no one’s ever going to buy it.

While you folks are busy stroking your vanity on video, you have an audience out here that needs direction, not just entertainment. The GOP is OBVIOUSLY not going to provide that. So far, Bill Whittle is the only one here who seems to get it. Then again, he always did.

“Americans are beginning to recognize this president as a man apart. He is our stranger in a land he doesn’t understand.”

As Rush said, culturally, Obama is not American. He is Indonesian. Being not sure about the number of States in the US when tired (is it 52 or 57?) was just a clue. Not knowing how to throw a baseball (something every kid learns) and flubbing the name of the stadium of his allegedly favorite baseball team are also clues. Give him a soccer ball, I’m sure he’d be much more comfortable with that.

He probably didn’t read On the Road in school. He understands little about the people who actually live in this country except to remark that they cling to a religion that seems strange to him compared to what he grew up with.

  23. 23. David S

Obama is not the man apart. The man apart is the lonely GOP supporter.

Republican party identification is less than 23%. The GOP base is smaller than the Democrats’ base, and is in the midst of a long term decline.

Moreover, it is the GOP that is out of touch with reality. A party that is openly hostile to science is going to have a hard time growing in the 21st century. The party that captures the imagination of the youth of the nation will lead this country going forward, and that party has been and continues to be the Democratic party.

There is nobody in the GOP who can claim the popularity and public support that Obama enjoys. Calling him a man apart only reveals your own isolation.

    Peace.

    [...] Denying America’s exceptionalism [...]

While this (ostentatious) humility might look benign, it actually belongs to a larger, and very corrosive cultural tide which aims at blunting America’s potential – its complementary tide being the pervasive & constant innoculation in this nation’s psyche the paralyzing sense that America is guilty, that this nation is actually the meanest, cruelest and most abject one ever inhabiting this planet. Guilty of anything that has ever gone awry in the world – or does so or will so.

Do I need to produce exemples? I don’t think so – and even a cursory review of the coverage of the Columbus Day events in the country cannot but give you the sense that we live under occupation, and we have to renounce our (criminal) traditions & celebrations and observe some nationa-wide, re-deeming atonement festivities.

The White House Chrismas tree is gone – wait for the Winter Conifer Of Pansexual Harmony and the attendant self-flagellation & WesCiv bashing festivities -

  25. 25. tanstaafl

I beg to differ that widespread dissent against One’s™ agenda hasn’t had substantive effects, goy.

America is awake to the fact that democrats are still hellbent on inserting the government option into whatever bill it, eventually, succeeds in passing. They’re alive to the travesty of the Porkulus, the agenda of cap ‘n trade (Cass Sunstein has argued that “environmentalism” may well be the backdoor to installing the socialists’ agenda)and other attempts at, in Barack’s own words, “fundamentally transforming America”

My state, under our corruption tainted & obsequious governor (but Eric Holder helped fix all that) has gone over to the dark side.

I wouldn’t dream of asking either of my democrat Senators to do jack sh!t. Like our governor, they’re swimming around in One’s tank, lying to the people as convenient.

  26. 26. Sebastian Shaw

David S, your diversions are pointless. The article is about Obama; give examples to prove your ideas. Republican examples are not it. You must use Obama examples.

  27. 27. ETAB

goy, you are right that the GOP has to start to lead the revolt against Obama and the Democratic movement towards a statist socialism. But this had to wait at least a year.

My point is that the Obama agenda had to be seen, by Americans of all perspectives, by themselves. It was and is necessary that its radical socialism and denial of the very constitutional infrastructure of the USA, be seen by The People. Themselves. Without anyone telling them.

This statist agenda had to implode on its own.

And it is doing so. The Tea Parties, which Obama pretends don’t exist, which the Democrats sneer at are one example. The attempt by Obama and the WH to deny and prevent criticism, for example, in Obama’s constant unseemly complaints about Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Fox News..show their agenda as controlling and against freedom.

I’d say that now that this implosion has begun, on its own, by the people..the GOP can slowly show a leader in the opposition. But it couldn’t do it before; it had to wait for the Will of The People.

And with Obama’s Rasmussen Presidential index having moved into the negative range since July and staying in that negative range..we can see the trend is against him.

Equally interesting is the summary of party affiliations (Rasmussen since 2004), where we find that Democrats were at a high of 41.6% in the 2008 year but they have now dropped down to their normal level of 37.5. The GOP, which ranged into the 37 scale, has remained consistent at its norm in the 33-31 range. It’s now at 32.1.

It’s the independents that are increasing, moving from the mid 20′s to 30.4. That’s the set to watch.

As for Obama’s indifference and rejection of American identity, it’s not merely an intellectual rejection, which it is with his wife and with many of the socialist radicals around him who pull his puppet strings.

Obama is psychologically dysfunctional. Deeply dysfunctional. As a pathological narcissist, he feels no empathy, no relationship, with anyone whom he cannot directly control. This control, for him, means that he must receive their adulation. If they do not give it, he’ll first try to berate and attack them (eg, his attacks on FOX, etc). If he can’t ‘budge’ them, then they cease to exist as human beings for him. He’ll quite readily deny them their constitutional rights, freedom of speech, etc, because they are, to him, non-existent as humans.

You can also see this tendency in his foreign affairs. His first steps will be to insult foreign leaders (UK’s Brown, Sarkozy, etc) because they are not his acolytes. Then, he’ll ignore them.

He’ll ignore any peoples whom he feels are outside of his realm of control, as he ignored the Iranian people’s demonstrations for democracy. Why? Because they weren’t demonstrating For Obama. They were indifferent to Obama, and therefore, he was indifferent to them.

Now is the time for the GOP to enable several leaders to articulate the concerns that Americans have with this pathological and anti-American Obama.

  28. 28. Tin Kicker

The real questions to be answered now are:

    1. CAN AMERICA SURVIVE THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION?

    2. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO UNDO THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION?

I believe that America will survive and yes, I believe the damage can be undone, but it will take a lot of work and most importantly, it will take the American public waking up and taking an interest in the future of our great country. Obama appears to want to unravel the “Great Experiment” that was began over 233 years ago. The future of our country lies with self reliant people who believe in this great country, and are willing to take a position on the point of the spear to ensure its continued existance.

GOD Bless America – we will survive !!!!!

  29. 29. goy

@25. tanstaafl: – I beg to differ that widespread dissent against One’s™ agenda hasn’t had substantive effects…

If there’s any evidence that America is awake and alive to the issues you noted, it’s not reflected in much of anything that’s going on at this site. And widespread dissent hasn’t had anywhere near the effects that the actual results of BHO’s own reversed, failed and/or failing policies have.

PJM, et al., have done such a poor job at revealing the truth and leading the conservative base that much of America – epitomized by simpleton idiots like David S – still thinks we support the RINOs in the GOP.

I wouldn’t waste my time calling or writing to Dodd or Lieberman either. But that doesn’t stop me from supporting things going on in other States and getting everyone I know to become aware of them. PJM is simply not interested in doing that – it’s largely become a mouthpiece for its own sake, like much of the rest of the media.

    Sad.

Or, Obama is a lazy, not very bright Chicago three card monte player who was sold as a celebrity to the voters by his pimps and who reads well. Obama and his wife are simply players looking to make big cash, doing whatever they are told to do. Of course he is “apart,” he’s not from around here.

  31. pelaut is correct: It began 40 years ago, first they took control of public education then they infiltrated the environmental movement. Then it spread to city, county, state commissioners, legislatures. Next they began to use lawyers, the ACLU and judges to do their dirty work. Like the health care bill being debated on now. They really don’t care what passes now because they will use the courts later to mold it the way they want it to be.
They have also been trying to turn little boys into little girls. The vast majority of soldiers today are from red States. There is no way to undo 40 years of indoctrination and brain washing. Whites are now a minority in 4 States (http://fwd4.me/0LE), conservatives in these states need to relocate to a solid red State. California; a white minority State has tried three times to outlaw home schooling (http://fwd4.me/0LH). For now, all we can do is stick together and try to save our great Country.

  32. 33. tanstaafl

I don’t think Washington politics, as currently configured, can do much of anything to buck the progressives’ conscientious and assiduous assault on American priciple, of 40+ years duration.

If the GOP (to which I don’t belong) just recycles old meat like Mitt Romney & Mike Huckabee, it’s going to be irrelevant anyway.

Milk soppy, if it continues to attempt to fashion itself into “democrat lite” and play identity group politics by devising programs and policies to attract sundry identity groups instead of resting on principle that cuts across the interests of all people, not just “special” interests, and harkens back to what this country was conceived to be.

Government insertion & meddling in my lifetime has screwed everything up, and we currently have a crowd, some of them in the GOP, who seem to think that, rinse & repeat, more of the same is goig to lead to a different result.

    The very definition of insanity.

So, yeah, a man apart, Barack Obama didn’t give jack sh!t about a woman who took it upon herself to look after him while daddy goofed off in Kenya and mommy goofed off in Indonesia. [...]

This is an excellent observation – I’ll take the liberty to enlarge a bit uupon it.
Mersault is a character of the post WW II European anguish & anomie created by someone who assisted at France’s debacle a few years before – however, exactly like the prior expression of post WW I European anguish and helplessness (the oft mentioned Edward Munch painting comes to mind), Munch’s and (30 years later) Camus’ anxieties were eventually defeated by optimism, and purposeful & rewarding effort (under America’s aegis), and nowdays Europe is not Munch’s or Camus’ anymore.

And with this historical arch in mind, while Obama definitely matches Mersault’s indifference and lack of sense of cultural belongingness, situation which you perfectly nailed down, I’ll further describe Obama as an anachronistic figure actually.
While for us his politics and pronouncements are irritating (at least), and the present history is equally frustrating, Obama’s views do not reflect a mighty & valid understanding of the world.
His views belong to the 70-s/80-s post-colonial, narrow lefty doctrines, doctrines which have been categorically defeated by the liberal capitalism’s ideology – high unemployment and economic downturn notwithstanding, America will limp, then dash on the right direction.
And the nations that will follow America will benefit as well -

  35. 36. Miked

On the one hand goy is quite correct that it is time for action rather than more blather. Still, constantly showcasing ,ridiculing, and commenting on, Barack’s narcissistic failure and the Obama admin’s own glowing ineptitude does further erode the One’s socialist/racist flash-in-the-pan popularity. And it further crytallizes ever greater opposition on a daily basis.

And then like clockwork and as a catalyst that, though it never changes a single mind certainly does strengthen opposition, David S arrives to take another dump and remind us that more direct and even violent activity would flush the toilet not only more rapidly but in a much more efficacious manner.

Whatever is your preference for action, benign opposition or otherwise is fine with me folks but, to continue an analogy that I find particularly apt for clowns like David S and for our present corrupt political system, it really is time to pump out the septic tank one way or another. The Democrats/Liberals/Progressives have overwhelmed the system, the sludge has overflowed into the leach field, the effluent is rising to the surface and it stinks badly. Just like when David S and the other transparent White House shills walk into the room.

Precisely. In the Democratic Peoples Republic of Farce, this is the new anthem:

    We are the hollow men
    We are the stuffed men
    Leaning together
    Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
    Our dried voices, when
    We whisper together
    Are quiet and meaningless
    As wind in dry grass
Or rats’ feet over broken glass
    In our dry cellar

When you try so hard to explain that which cannot be explained, you are already dealing with evil, but you have not recognized it, yet.

No matter how much we wish otherwise, the man has charmed the electorate, and grabs all the levers of power as fast as anyone can, with the complicity of a press mostly devoid of any corporate sense of duty. He already got a hold on the financial sector and two of the three automakers (My prize goes to Ford for escaping the lasso), and he is now going for the health care industry and the energy industry will legistaltive maneuvers in the book, and beyond. Would the devil incarnate do any more than this?

The only reasonable thing to do is fight him and his acolytes with all we have. Block his legislative projects by calling your own representatives and make them feel the heat (not with insults, with solid arguments), hold sidewalk summits with your neighbors, protest in the street, home school your children, and anything else you can think of to prevent the train wreck.

Mr. London – very well said and I can’t disagree with you. But I would one other thing. I believe Obama is in over his head and is not ready for prime time, and I think Americans are slowly waking up to that fact.

but left a couple of wars as well as all these other nightmares this president since the day he raised his hand to take the oath earlier this year.

The wars and record spending and deficits alone would have been more than enough to cripple any new president, but a financial meltdown and record forclosures, bank failures and lay off’s as well..to boot. To be sure, this president has arguably faced the worst problems of any modern president since living memory.

However, its remarkable, bu this president seems to have a handle on them, though he needs to make a list of priorities, and stick to them. I do not understand the need to take on the media as well (fox)…he is wasting valuable time on that endeavor. Good Luck to him ! He will need all that he can get.

  41. 42. goy

@27. ETAB: – goy, you are right that the GOP has to start to lead the revolt against Obama and the Democratic movement …

Well, that’s not what I wrote and it’s not what I believe.

The GOP as it currently stands is effectively dead as a political force. As currently aligned, they’re not capable of “leading” anything. Going forward, the only substantive traction the GOP will ever get without radical internal reform is through public reaction to the left’s socially suicidal policies. That will only give us more of the Socialist-Lite® agenda they’ve become famous for.

The GOP has lost the confidence and support of the only constituency that gave it any validity: the national conservative majority which overwhelmingly outnumbers liberals in every State. The last time the GOP had a truly conservative leader, the result was historic. And reproducible.

What I wrote was that PJM is preaching to the choir, not leading it to take action. In that sense it is no different from the GOP, which has proven itself to be little more than the “slow boat” version of BHO’s putsch toward totalitarianism. With the exception of Wretchard’s and Whittle’s blogs, rather than being a forum discussing the strategies and tactics necessary to restore the Republic, its comment threads are little more than troll-swatting screaming matches and “me too” posts vaguely reminiscent of the echo chambers at dKos, LGF and DU. It’s been fun, but it’s time to go to work now.

We don’t need “revolt” or “revolution”. We need education, leadership and action. We need – dare I say it – activism. But that activism needs to be grounded in correcting, not in tearing down the system. It needs to be focused on free markets, a return to commodity money, truly smaller government, elimination of entitlement politics and a renewed focus on the Constitutionality of legislation rather than dependence on government to solve every conceivable human ill.

    - This statist agenda had to implode on its own.

The statist agenda always implodes on its own, ETAB. It’s been doing that throughout the entire 20th Century. It’s doing so right now all over Europe, where the only viable solution to the demographic time bomb there is to encourage immigration. And of course immigrants to European countries are overwhelmingly indoctrinated with non-European values.

If self-induced implosion were all that was needed, we wouldn’t be saddled with an inexperienced, know-nothing, marxist narcissist for a President. But the fact is that no one’s been paying attention because the public’s gaze has been redirected everywhere except history, by academia and self-serving media.

The part you may be missing here – or maybe you’d prefer not to think about the implications, and I can certainly understand that temptation – is that the implosion of the statist agenda at the federal level is also going to mean the implosion of the Republic.

This isn’t 1977, where we had a virtually unassailable economy and body politic capable of withstanding the worst socialist excesses at that time. Since then, having endured another thirty years of creeping socialism, at least twenty years of policies destructive of every free market, incessant demonization of religious institutions, politicization of virtually every aspect of our society, a deeply politically divided populace and, now, TRILLIONS of dollars in unnecessary debt, the U.S.A. is no longer in a position to withstand those excesses. And of course that’s been the goal of the Alinskyites all along: to overwhelm the Republic’s institutions to the point where the system breaks down irretrievably, making it fertile ground for “rebuilding” as a populist Utopia. Just like 1930s Germany.

    - Now is the time for the GOP to enable several leaders to articulate the concerns that Americans have with this pathological and anti-American Obama.

With all due respect, this is poppycock. The politicians, bureaucrats and lawyers in the GOP are going to resist every effort to bring any real reform to government, just like the Alaska State government resisted Sarah Palin’s efforts. Like the Democrats, their cushy careers and lifetime incumbencies depend on manipulating the People, not serving them.

As tanstaafl accurately points out, the GOP, by its own choice, has nothing to offer but the same tired politicians-as-usual, epitomized by self-promoting con artists like the plastic, self-aggrandizing Mitt Romney, who gave socialists the foot in the door they needed by actively supporting socialized medicine in Massachusetts.

We shall unfortunately never see a test of Mr. Obama’s convictions regarding the use of power. He hides his machinations that accompanied his rise to “power” in Chicago, as well as his rise to “power” to the presidency of the United States. What he does not hide is his unwillingness AND ineptitude in expressing power on the international stage. He talks a better game on national issues, but has proved just as inept on all fronts.

His silver tongue is so forked. No one believes what he says because he had failed to make himself clear before the election and since entering office he has again been on both sides of various issues. Credence is no longer part of his aura; stealth, maybe, but not credence.

All the comments about him being a citizen of the world are on point. His waffle dance on Afghanistan is typical – facts versus ideological orientation. He is caught in the headlights and everyone knows it. American is not his family. It is the world that is his abode – sort of like a doppelganger of an omnipotent, but uninterested god. There is just narrative, no truth or values worth extending one’s arm to meet.

I have a hazy vision of Mr. Obama being mugged on the street with his family and failing to fight for their safety and integrity. Should he fight? – against his ideology! Should he not fight? – the disappearance of his genetic future! How would he decide at the moment of truth? After all, the mugger is no less worthy than are the members of his family! Only his response to gritty life can clarify anything of importance, since he keeps hidden his real values. One value is indeed clear – his desire to hide his thinking and beliefs.

Poor Citizen, every President of the United States faces several trials by fire; however, a POTUS with leadership deals with most problems EFFECTIVELY. President George W. Bush had 9/11 to deal with. President Reagan had to deal with stagflation, higher taxes, & several international problems, specifically Iran & the Soviet Union. President Obama does not deal with problems at all; he outsources his leadership to underlings while he continues to seek the spotlight. Like President Carter before him, President Obama is making bad situations worse. For example, his domestic spending & want for higher taxes is making unemployment worse. Ditto for Porkulus. Obama’s totalitarian nature will destroy him since it is incompatible with the very fabric of the United States. He will go down in flames as the worst POTUS in modern history. Jimmy Carter will no longer be alone.

Quit making excuses for Obama. If he was leader, he would make himself into a man-child victim. Leaders are not vicitms; they lead. Obama is not a leader. He’s a Marxist revolutionary using the POTUS to “reshape” America into a 3rd World Country. He will fail thanks to the Constitution. All the other Democrats in Obama’s shadow will go down with him.

    I am shocked, shocked!
… yet right you are. Just watched Rahm Emmanuel on TV – we can call Obama’s presidency as the times of the Great Deliberation. Only excuses and obfuscation.
I’ll limit this comment at only one facet of the problems we face – Afghanistan.
Weren’t they aware of the problems there? They learnt about the deterioration of that situation only last night?
They learnt that Karzai is a creep and not a shining example of integrity and competence only two weeks ago?
And so on and so forth.

Besides whatever other flaws Obama has, he glaringly lacks managerial skill and temper – he has a weird sense of priorities, and when he takes a decision that action is generally wrong. But he doesn’t do that without listening to countless views (which reasonably can be reduced to two or three alternatives).
And he deliberates. And announces that he is deliberating. And that he will take a decision only after a thoughtful deliberation. And he considers. And deliberates.
Then, he place the wagon ahead of the horses – but not before listening.
Then, when things crash – “it’s because my staff” – “this is how I was advised to decide” – “one doesn’t get always good advice”, etc. –
    Oh, lord!

goy – You’re wrong here, buddy. It does make a difference. If one is a political junkie like you, yeah, you’ve seen all this before. However, some people are just awakening from their slumber. They need to read this stuff.

The people who comment here are getting very refined in their arguments as well. Practice makes perfect. We are also becoming quite good at getting to the very core of the issues. The philosophical understandings are increasing.

I keep track of who’s who on this site. I know where people stand, roughly. I see a lot of new posters here on a regular basis. The wave is building. It has not yet crested. It shall. Then, those things you suggest will definitely be the order of the day. You’re right, though, that those things should be here, so when people are ready, they can take action.

I think this site has more influence than you think. Last year, during the campaign, three times did I see a phrase I’d used here, some point I’d made, be used on TV. Earlier this year, President Bush spoke to the GOPAC. He used an explanation I’d posted about two weeks earlier almost verbatim in his speech. A couple days ago, an article was posted using some of the very things I’d put forth a month prior. These are just the ones I’ve seen. How many other times have I had effect? I cannot know.

Ideas are powerful things. Hit on the right concept or phrase, identify some concept in such a way as to fire the imagination or purely encapsulate a concept, and it becomes powerful. Keep posting. Work to phrase things better and better. The wave will build.

We are way ahead of schedule in stopping this nightmare. Evil bears the seeds of its own destruction. If the Leftists had been more circumspect and patient, they could’ve proceeded apace and won it all. As it is, they got drunk with power. They overreached, overplayed their hand, and have been exposed. The ugliness is now there for people to see. They awaken to the stench.

We have reached an ebb tide point. This is a valid military concept. Momentum can only carry you so far. Your power diffuses. Your supporting infrastructure ceases to support further. Does the enemy hit you then, you are doomed.

This was best exemplified in early ’43 on the Eastern Front. Hitler was angry and panicking a bit. Manstein calmly told him to be patient. The enemy was overextending himself. He will fall just short of his goal, then he can be destroyed. He was proven right. He executed the Backhand Blow. It was one of the great military victories. It was only possible because Manstein could see it and could caution patience, faith, and courage.

They went on to lose the war, of course, through many bad decisions later, and we may, as well. But the victory is there for us to take at the right time. We must prepare our response, but not execute too soon, lest the enemy become wary and pull back a bit. We have not the strength to defeat him, yet. We must allow him to do that himself.

We must eat away at his support structure. Kill off the czars. (Thanks Beck!) Defame their leaders by exposing them, as is happening now to Reid. Pelosi is losing her mojo. Rangel, Dodd, and many others are losing power. Soon they shall be inert. There will be some minor creeping forward here and there, but the high tide has passed.

The elections this year will signal the end. Once they get drubbed in VA and NJ, their power will be broken, as all the vulnerable Congresscritters up for re-election next year will move to cover their asses. But then, that’ll be too late for them. They would have to pull back now to avoid the looming defeat, but they shan’t. The 2010 election campaigns will be the great counterattack. They will then be on the defensive with no strength to resist.

They will be absolutely routed in 2010, if we just allow them to destroy themselves. Take heart. Show patience and have some faith. Believe in this country. Pray. Ye shall be rewarded.

One last thing: many GOP’ers are beginning to awaken, as well. Old habits die hard, but they, too, are beginning to see the awful truth. A Conservative is a Liberal who was mugged, yesterday. Some of these guys are finding religion about now. Rarely has the GOP been so united. Specter bolted. Snow may, too. The rest got religion and are becoming the party of “No!”

Let’s be Machiavellian realists, people will complain for about a week–essentially the news coverage for the Indonesian Tsunami–but with a half a billion dead, never coming back, and cheap oil back on tap, everyone will have moved on to domestic cat fights over providing for universal health care when no one wants to pay for it. I disagree with this writer in all respect, all the actions the President is taken towards re-uniting United States with the rest of the world, especially the Muslim World does not make America weak, or make it look like the Country is conceeding to her enemies by retreating with appologetic speeches. The President’s action is a sign of how a good leader should be responding to issues, it’s not necessarily mean it has to be the beating of drums of war at all time before America can show her mightiness as a Super Power. As a matter of fact, history has shown us that there is limit to the use of force like in the case of the war in Iraq, if not for the change in tactical measures employed in turning the Sunis against the Al Qaida that eventually give way to cooling down the war, what would have become the fate of the Iraqis today. The current economic situation in the country today is partly due to this war, unless we are not facing the reality. President Obama is surrounded with people that have unquestionable patriotism and love for this Country and are ready to do anything possible to make the Country come back to her leadership role as a peace loving nation.
The writer need to refresh his memory about the President profession, the President was a former federal Senator representing the State of Illinois and was never a Bascketballer but love bascketball as a sport, so his analogy is wrong. Americans rhythms right now is about job security, stable economy and better health insurance coverage, and one of the way to secure these is through reconcilliation which the President very much comprehend. United States cannot afford another war now, so the President is sailing the boat in the right direction and he’s being applaud by those Americans that values and appreciates the channel the president and his cabinet are taken. The President, I believe was chosen to save Americans from falling to the deep pith dug by the war mongers. American dollar cannot go down more than where it’s currently is, unless we want total disaster for this nation. According to Fareed Zakaria GPS corner on CNN, the economy of China, India, Indonasia and the likes were expected to fell if Ameerican economy is not in shape as it is right now, but instead, the economy of these Countries are all gaining strength, which explain why President Obama’s action will be gainig rapid strength in the near future as a leader elected at the right time for the right cause.

@47. Marc Malone: – goy – You’re wrong here, buddy.

I don’t think so. But that doesn’t mean I disagree with much of what you’ve written, which didn’t really address my comments directly.

It’s true that the left is way overplaying their hand. Like the trolls hereabouts, they appear to have confused the electorate’s media-induced stupor last November with a mandate. Right now it looks like they’re going to pay for this miscalculation next year, and hopefully in 2012 – that’s assuming that the (real) economic crisis looming on the horizon allows for the normal function of our institutions, which we’ve taken for granted up to now.

But the fact is that there are no guarantees. And my concern is that neither the GOP nor much of the conservative blogosphere is taking any real pro-active steps toward ensuring that outcome, OTHER THAN incessantly carping about each new issue that pops up in the news cycle. The result of that non-strategy will, at best, be a short-lived ‘victory-by-default’, followed by the slow creep of socialism we’ve been experiencing, when what’s needed is a sea change in the way Americans think about government and their relationship to it. That change isn’t going to happen on its own – not with most of the media and virtually all of popular culture constantly beating them over the head with propaganda aimed at destroying the Republic.

  59. 60. goy

p.s. Marc – Yaron Brook puts my concerns in perspective fairly concisely (at around 15:00 in) here.

  60. 61. Disturber

In 1956, Collin Wilson wrote a seminal book entitled “The Outsider” which described a character type including Mersault who appeared again and again in Western literature. That character was plagued by a detachment from his society and the resulting ennui lead him to reject the values which provided the very cohesiveness for the society that he observed from afar. (I strongly recommend this book to all who are posting here.) I believe that Wilson’s analysis provides considerable insight into the dangers that Obama and his crew present.

Wilson’s “Outsider” had two characteristics which seem to define Obama. Obama’s narcissism manifests itself by a presumption of correctness and an inability to acknowledge any validity to opinions in disagreement. The classic outsider didn’t care whether he was right or wrong, he existed in a fog of isolation, interacting with the society and the “others” only insofar as it was a source of life sustenance. The Outsider was not a criminal in the classic sense, but operated at the fringe of what was accepted behavior. Obama is also operating at the fringe on such matters of honesty and ethical consistency, often opting for the prosaic when he perceives his political objectives to be threatened. The ongoing attack on Fox News is an example, where the ersatz Constitutional scholar jettisons the First Amendment in an act of sub-Presidential umbrage. Thus, to merely characterize Obama as a man apart only covers part of the ground. I believe that he virtually perceives himself as Christ-like, having a core that is divinely guided. Being a Churchill or a Roosevelt is not enough for him. As he said sometime after the election, he believes that he has a “gift.” If I am correct, there will be no adjustment in his course based upon the experience of actually governing. Instead, there will be an ever accelerating retreat into his self-righteousness, which will ultimately and fortunately be his undoing.

A good example of this divine self image is his delegation of the formulation of his healthcare reform to Congress and his refusal to lead in any meaningful way. In fact, he has acknowledged that he hasn’t even become familiar with the substance of the bills. Does this not reflect a mindset that whatever is done under his direction will be divinely ordained? That seems to be the case as he shows no meaningful interest as to what is actually in the pending legislation. (Or is he profoundly lazy?)

Obama’s second characteristic of the classic outsider is that he revels in the trappings and the exercise of power. Wilson’s Outsider exercised power only over the minutiae of his life, but that power was as absolute as was possible. From his New York date to the huge entourage that accompanied him on his Quixotic jaunt to Copenhagen, to his ordering in pizza from St . Louis, Obama thinks nothing of using the national treasury to support his royal whims. More concerning is the appointment of his ragtag assortment of czars in a manner that avoids the confirmation process. He has executive power and he enjoys using it to achieve his ends rather than for the good of the country, however perceived. Authority in his mind and under his hand is inherently correct regardless of perceived excess and that mindset extends from his extravagances to his political ideas. Yet we know that slavish reliance on authority obscures truth and therein lies the real danger with this man whose sycophantic followers will not allow the tiniest criticism of such behavior.

A man apart is the beginning of the analysis, but not the end. I feel that there is a much more insidious and more dangerous process afoot. From his Outsider perspective, Obama has much more than a disdain for the society that shelters him, he seeks to alter it in a fashion that validates his disdain.

  61. 62. David W. Lincoln

    I came across this: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/10/18/gregg-u-s-could-be-on-path-to-a-banana-republic-situation/

It says a lot that the party of “no” has that label because the other party in the House & Senate doesn’t like what they are saying. So, instead of the Repubs saying what they say, and the Democrats not liking it, and then the Dems say the Repubs have yet to say anything; the Dems say the Repubs are the party of “no”.

  62. 63. goy

@62. David W. Lincoln: – It says a lot that the party of “no” has that label because the other party in the House & Senate doesn’t like what they are saying.

It certainly does. And when people actually think about that silly appellation – which is just another straw man / Rule #5 dismissal of the opposition – they realize that the GOP is and has been anything but. In fact, the danger to the Republic is a direct result of the GOP saying “yes” far too often and too freely.

For over 70 years, self-described “conservatives” (read: classical liberals) have been bending over backward to compromise with the left, which has spent three generations imposing its socialist / collectivist / moral relativist will on America. We’re approaching the tipping point – as the government actively and openly implements “Third Way”, corporatist/national socialist/fascist policies by seizing control of the banking industry, automotive industry and, soon, the health industry – beyond which preservation of the Republic will be impossible without open conflict and a wholesale replacement of our federal (and some States’) government. Further compromise will push us beyond that tipping point, and the left knows it. They need the GOP to say “yes” just a few more times.

That’s why socialists are now actively pursuing a pogrom against conservatives, conservative ideology, capitalism and classical liberalism in general. That’s what’s behind the admonitions that if Europe (i.e., “other developed countries) jumps off a cliff, we should do the same. That’s what’s behind the ridicule and marginalization of the GOP (not that they don’t deserve it) and their erstwhile base among conservatives (who don’t). That’s what’s behind the labeling of Fox News as “un-American”. That’s what’s behind blaming “Wall Street” for the credit meltdown when it was actually caused by years of federal meddling and manipulation of the money market.

Like all of the left’s adolescent behavior, their “Party of No” canard is functionally equivalent to a spoiled 12-year-old who’s allowed to do pretty much anything he wants, and then screams “YOU NEVER LET ME DO ANYTHING” when he’s denied the money for a new Blackberry… after losing two of them.

disturber – an excellent post. I agree – a ‘man apart’ is the beginning of the analysis but no the end’.

And what is the end? Obama retreats into a cocoon of a narcissistic grandiose fictional narrative about both himself and his transformation of America, leaving others to protect him from the intrusion of reality.

Meanwhile, the radical socialists who provide Obama with the bills of his increasing power over Americans, move to inhibit and prevent debate and analysis within the country, and to reduce American power and ultimately American security, internationally.

  65. 66. Marc Malone

What will be the end? Look to history. In 1945, Hitler was facing the end. The Russians were ready to launch their final offensive. There were no more tranches of foreign ground to give up to allow them to outrum their logistical support. Guderian, as Chief of General Staff, the top military job, had accumulated truly respectable reserve force. They were still outnumbered at the point of attack some 3:1, but those were good odds for the Germans.

The problem was, there was no one left who was competent to command the battle but him; at leat, no one who was politically acceptable. So, he advocated a mediocre ancient General. his intent was to conduct the battle through him. Hitler refused. he felt that no longer could the professionals be trusted, so he put the battle under the command of… Himmler! That would be like putting Axelrod in charge of Afghanistan, with all the competent Generals gone.

In the end, Hitler was giving orders to non-existent units, units which had been destroyed in the onslaught, all the while railing at how others had betrayed him. Nothing wrong with himself, of course, just the failures of others to execute his grand vision.

His best Generals were still willing to serve, if they had no suicided or been murdered. Hitler wouldn’t allow them to serve him. He could trust none but the political flacks; those who had no competence at anything but revolution. He had descended into ever greater madness after the attempt on his life. His rages lasted for hours. His tyranny was ever worse. Eventually, the writing was on the wall, and the murderes did all they could to accelerate the Jewish pogrom, all the more intent to do as much evil as they could before their own extirpation.

Narcissism… to laying the seeds for his own destruction (now)… to floundering(after the elections in VA and NJ)… to driving away anyone competent (late 2010)… to attempted assassination… to paranoia… to last desperate psychotic flailings… to suicide. The Narcissist cannot ever admit he was wrong and will never cease to attempt to do his evil unto the end.

The danger will come when Obama is closest to defeat, or has indeed lost the next election (if we get that far). The failed Narcissist ends in Nihilism… and will try to take as many with him as possible. The decent mind fails at conceiving what such a psychotic man might do in such a situation, but do not expect a graceful exit.

The greatest danger to our Republic lies ahead, when we are at the brink of retaking what is ours. Know that nothing will be out of bounds. Gross election intimidation. Crushing dissent. Silencing the unfriendly media, including the ‘Net. Attempts to suspend elections. Political and media assassinations. You may say, “No, he wouldn’t do THAT!” History says otherwise. Nero let Rome burn… and joyfully fiddled all the while.
