Against Voter Fraud Protests, Worcester Mayor Plays the Race Card
Scandalous. Word is in that, at a meeting of the Election Commission Thursday night concerning the massive voting irregularities witnessed by volunteer poll observers this past November (see my “Massive Voting Fraud Reported in Massachusetts“), Worcester Mayor Joseph O’Brien (D) said of those citizens who had volunteered their time and reported in all good conscience on what they saw:
These losers apparently don’t like advocate groups like Neighbor to Neighbor because NTN supports people of low income, minorities, whose skin color isn’t the same as ours. (emphasis added)
Here is video of the mayor’s remarks:
This is the treatment that the volunteer overseer of democracy can expect from elected officials for his or her efforts.
As I reported previously, voting had hardly begun in Worcester, an urban area west of Boston, before word began coming in of questionable activity, mostly centered around community organizing group Neighbor to Neighbor, or N2N. N2N workers were escorting voters in to the polling places and pointing to the boxes on the ballot the voter was to choose. They were accompanying voters in to the booth as “translators” even though the ballots had Spanish translation. As one volunteer observer noted:
The machine for the visually impaired speaks Spanish, no help needed. I saw food exchange hands in return for the vote. Collecting people at the food pantry, posting ballots on car windshields. Ballots prefilled out brought in as guides to voting, helpers actually voting for the person. One person — I am sure a helper — voted at least 20 times! (emphasis added)
While many in the leftist establishment undoubtedly hoped that the events of last November would disappear down the memory hole when the carpets were rolled up after election day, and the volunteers all went back to their day jobs, that simply hasn’t been the case. In spite of having many other personal obligations, and facing an uninterested government bureaucracy, a small group of stalwarts has continued to agitate in favor of keeping American democracy credible.
One such stalwart, Desiree Awiszio, reported from the meeting:
This entire evening was orchestrated [...]. [Worcester Mayor Joseph] O’Brien wanted to shut us down tonight. The Worcester Mayor and N2N worked together as a team! [...] I saw Mayor O’Brien emerge from his office and say hello and chat with all the N2N people. They all went into the meeting room together. They took up most of the rows, and the 5 of us sat in the front row [...].
[...] Chairwoman Dube (Democrat) announced that the agenda has been changed at the request of the Mayor (just like that). They wanted to jump to the second item about election day complaints. Then, she said “the Mayor has a statement.” Up walked O’Brien. He said that only the “few” who filed these complaints are making claims like this about Worcester voting. He said he hasn’t heard it from any other citizen (implying what we are doing must not be true and we’re just a bunch of liars). He said this is all because we “don’t like the outcome of the election” (in other words, you bunch of sore losers — you lost statewide, it’s all sour grapes). Then he went on to praise N2N as some holier than thou group doing all the good in the world to help voters. Then he said those of us who are pollwatchers and filing these complaints are doing this, because we “don’t like the color of someone else’s skin” (we were furious — he’s calling us racists). He went on to say that “this has been going on for 4 months now and needs to stop” (he wants to shut us down – he doesn’t want the press attention — he knows it’s effective)… (emphasis added)
If there was one thing Awiszio wasn’t about to be, it was shut down. Here she describes her turn at the podium:
[...] Clearly, I wasn’t going to sit there, and let the Mayor’s remarks which impugn, malign, and denigrate our integrity and character go unanswered. So, I put my remarks in the context of what we’ve been trying to do from the start with the commission, about the problems found and the work involved to bring these to their attention in detail and the laws that are being broken, that these are all legitimate violations. I went on in that context and they couldn’t stop that [...]. I also said that “this is not about one election. Many elections are lost, many. This is about insuring voter integrity,” and I used that as the way to get back on the Mayor again. I went on to say that his claims were “outrageous” and that he is “accusing citizens who volunteer their time as pollwatchers of being racists by saying we don’t like the color of someone else’s skin.” Again, I stated how “I summarily resent and reject this partisan political statement by the Mayor and that it’s outrageous.” I left the podium…
One can imagine how galling it was for Awiszio to see the mayor and members of N2N debriefing in the hallway after the meeting, “They were out in the hall laughing it up and enjoying themselves talking.”
Smearing political opponents is nothing new, nor is playing the race card when you know you’re holding a losing hand. In this respect, Worcester Mayor O’Brien is following in a long tradition. He certainly knows what side his bread is buttered on. Neighbor to Neighbor and similar groups are an integral part of the institutional left’s re-election strategy. The fact that they tread the gray areas of election and charitable laws isn’t a bug. For pols like O’Brien, it’s a feature.

What to do, what to do? How are the honest and decent voters who play by the rules supposed to defeat corrupt politicians and their backers who use every dirty trick and tactic they can think of to hold on to power?
Something’s got to give, and it’s not going to be pretty.
Sad but not surprising. Mayor O’Brien is trying to cover his tracks by using the smokescreen of “race.” Why do Democrats feel that it’s OK to commit voter fraud and polling-place violations? And if they think that their actions are legitimate or justified then why do they always feel the need to hide behind the strawman of “racial bias.” Why can’t citizens tasked with keeping an eye on the polling places to make sure that such frauds and violations don’t occur have to suffer such accusations from a guy who is supposed to be the mayor of ALL the people in Worcester, not just those who belong to his party…
Mayor O’B should be investigated by the US Attorney’s office. What he has done is support voter fraud in a Federal Election polling place. Imagine what would be learned in the discovery process where all his City Hall and personal email and phone records are subpoenaed and made available to the public. I’m sure the Mayor will enjoy his time in Club Fed!
I don’t think AG Martha Coakley will be doing that anytime soon…
Desiree Awiszio is an inspiration to all the patriots living in Massachusetts. Her words at that meeting were truly “speaking truth to power.” Because of her tireless work there are now cracks in curtain of back room deals that covers our Commonwealth, cracks that are letting the sunlight in and driving out corruption.
Let face it the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts is no better than the old Soviet Union. When you have one party rule Corruption is a way of life. The entire state is corrupt to core starting with indicted house
speakers Finneran, Deleo and so on. The sad part of it is that a state that house Harvard, MIT and the finest schools in the world, is full of educated morons who willingly submit themselves to abuse and tyranny.
Being from that area originally, I was highly suspicious of last fall’s election results in MA. Now I know why.
This is par for the course in MA. There is an effort in our state to push “voter ID to vote” but with Democrat dominated Beacon Hill, it would be a miracle if such a mandate were passed. In the meantime, all we can do is keep the voter ID issue out there. In some precincts people voluntarily showed their ID and gradually everyone started to do it, and those who did not, looked mighty suspicious. If our representatives won’t do the right thing and require all voter to show their ID, then the people in MA will take it upon themselves to act as if the law were in effect.
Why did every Democrat win re-election in MA this year, when so many went down all over the US? Tierney, whose wife admitted to laundering money; Frank, who brought us the Fanny and Freddie Show and was party to the Maxine Waters scandal (read all about it in the msm…not); a large chunk of the signers of the Hamas 54 letter, and so on. N2N is another ACORN, and it’s groups like this that help ensure their re-election, in tandem with the Democrat Party. People like Desiree, Marty Lamb and Marty Solomon (with the help of PJ Media!) are making it no longer so easy for them to cry “racism” and have Republicans and Independents run and hide. To quote the Terminator, We’ll be back!
As a Nov. 2010 poll watcher, I have a heads up for all current/prospective participants in poll watching Nov. 2012: poll watching is legal and admirable, and available to both sides. So~there is a strong possibility N2N et al. will organize a counter-group of poll watchers who will continue their tradition of making up falsehoods of what’s going on and/or placing disruptive “plants” in key places. From the incident at Sheila Jackson Lee’s precinct in Houston, one can suppose that the police will likely have no interest in “serving and protecting the public,” as was the case when they sided with the Black Panthers.
Here indeed is a conundrum to pre-emptively plan for. I hope Mr. J. Christian Adams is reading these remarks to consider presenting at the national True the Vote summit in Houston next month.
A citizen is supposed to be proficient in English. Why do we need people to translate(coach)for them?
I’m from Amejtntidjkdhfdkia and I think every thing printed in the US should include my native language. When I call a business I want them to say in my Amejtntidjkdhfdkian native tongue, “press 11 for English” When I get arrested I want my rights to an interpreter. If one can’t be found I demand to be let go without charge. Every time I vote I want my vote to count and not have questions thrown about concerning my eligibility. All three times I voted for Obama in 2008 I had to endure the humiliation of being asked for ID until my Dem Rep stepped in and put a stop to the indignity.
My hat is off to those patriots in Worcester who served as pollwatchers in the 2010 General Election. Many of us did the same in Houston and share your stories and frustration with the lack of respect and sheer contempt given our efforts by some elected officials. Ignoring us just makes us more resolute in our commitment to be back in greater numbers next election. STAY WITH IT, PATRIOTS! You are not alone. Join us at the TrueTheVote national summit in Houston if you can.
One thing that was not mentioned in this piece outright was that the Spanish-speakers being brought to the polls were almost certainly mostly non-citizens. Typically, Hispanics who need to be brought to the polls and need intensive instruction on how to vote are of the lower Hispanic socio-economic strata, which is absolutely and completely non-native in Massachussetts.
What was observed last November were illegal aliens voting for national and state offices.
…and people might be wondering why 90% of voter “irregularities” since 2000 have benefitted Democrats…or why the DNC has record fines for voting “irregularities” – fines that have nearly doubled every year since 2000
