Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) has energized the 2012 race for the White House since Mitt Romney tapped him as his pick for vice president. Bill Whittle wants to know why Ryan is the only public servant in America to propose a serious plan to save the nation from certain fiscal ruin. He is also, win or lose, the best man on the ticket this year. Hear why.

I agree, a great way to lose. There is something morally upturning about glory proclaimed by “Afterburner”, should our fate be defeat. Alas, in all the glory inspiration joyouly preached by “Afterburner” , there is not enough reflection on what DEFEAT might mean. Look up in internet the story of the quite heroic resistance that American soldiers and their Filipino counterparts put up against the conquering Imperial Army of Japan (which did, indeed, “funamentally transform” life on the islands). That “defeat” as experienced by the defeated rendered any “great way” of the defeat sound hollow. Perhaps, after the war, some of the not all so many survivors felt satisfied remembering the great a way they lost. I would bet, however, that that said soldiers would have preferred a sloppy, sneaky, dirty, two-bit victory. Hell to the glory of it all. Victory counts.
Well, defeat is not yet, hopefully never. But, if it does come to be and the “fundamental transformation” is set forth (I am thinking here about Stanley Kurtz’s “Spreading the Wealth”), how long will the glory of losing sustain me? The Hebrews who valiantly fought the Romans did have a sort of glorious defeat (which we can celebrate today), but at that time some 10,000 survivors were rounded up and send off to Rome as, say, deficit spending currency for the construction of the Coloseum, not to mention the 100% taxation, viz., robbery of the Temple. I am not suggesting that an Obama victory is just like the Roman one (unless one is an unborn child to be aborted profusely). What I am suggesting is that the “glory in defeat” does, indeed, manifest steriling words for the campaign, for the ongoing “fight”, but is of doubtful value if Mark Steyn’s proclamations in his “After America. Get Ready for Armegeddon” come true. I will emigrate to elsewhere where I do not have to live in the aftermath of a glorious way to lose. Let us struggle to win, gloriously or unimpressively, just win!!! (Afterall, it costs so much to change passports!)
Regarding Paul Ryan being the only public servant offering a ‘serious plan to save the nation from certain fiscal ruin’…ever heard of the RSC?

I wish I could share the optimism. The problem is that we live in a globalized economy, and the European economy is a house of cards. If you thought the swapping of mortgage-based derivatives was a scam, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
Think also about the reaction from the left when Obama is driven from office. Class division and race consciousness will hatch out like poisons in the body politic. Messiahs don’t fall without significant collateral damage.
Our ace in the hole is that America is blessed with abundant resources and native talent. Rampant inflation is just one possibility. When the price of bread goes to ten dollars a loaf, Americans will grumble, but Africa will starve. A time of troubles this way comes. Prepare yourselves.
Just a general comment, I’m just about to watch:
Whittle’s our Weapon X. He seems to fly completely under the Left’s radar — when do you ever hear “We have to get this Whittle guy!” But I’ve never seen one of his clips that hasn’t been a truth bomb, and he has this brilliant, poker-faced sense of humor that has you laughing all the way up to what is invariably his airtight, well-reasoned conclusion.
Just a big fan, Bill, keep up the good work.
I totally agree about Mr. Whittle. Cogent and thought provoking commentary every time. I only wish these pieces could get more widespread circulation.
