Ok, you uni lovers out there. You've swayed me to give uni another try. It's been about 10 years, but I will eat some soon and report back.

Interested in trying the place on 185th and Baseline. However, technically not in Portland and is a bit of a drive out of town (just for people that are unfamiliar with the Portland Metro area). Still, I'll drive near and far for good sushi!

Too the author

In the portland area, Toshi's sushi on the corner of 185th and baseline is a better place. It is much smaller, so it has a smaller menu but it is always very good. It also has smaller prices for individual orders.

I like uni with a quail egg but not so much alone.

A third on the uni. I have had it in sushi restaurants, and it's awful. I have also had urchin that was perfectly fresh (cut it open myself, in fact), and it was one of the most seductively rich and wonderful foods I've ever had. I didn't have any rice and seaweed with me at the time, which I regretted deeply.

I didn't dive for the urchins, but they had been shipped live. I think that's what makes the difference.

Having lived in Japan for a few years, I got to like sushi quite a bit... and Japanese women too.

The two naturally go together... Japan's real religion is food. Japanese culture promotes womens' primary role as that of being an object of idealistic desire.

Oh, and Japanese TV is riddled with outrageous satire, too.

Would the restaurant "recently reviewed, lauded for its enormous portions" be Saburo's?

I'm with Roger L. Simon on the urchin. I'm living in Italy and the fresh ricci (urchin) eaten fresh from the water, indeed with a little seawater in it, is sublime. The urchin is served in its shell in the ristorantes. It is acceptable to lick the the inside or scrape with a bit of bread. With a good prosecco...ummmm yeah! No sushi places here in Brindisi though. The ricci (when available) will have to tide me over until I get into Rome again.

Hopefully, the author realizes that the sushi video is a joke, made by a Japanese comedy group... I like the kappa sushi.
