Abusing Israel: The Fashionable Thing to Do

Israelis are being painted as peace refusers, terrorizers, killers, torturers, and recently, pilferers of internal organs.

Although these charges are at varying levels of severity, they all focus on Israeli society as a whole (including its civilian army) and are not just “criticisms of Israeli policy.” Note also that all these charges come from the “civilized” Western world. Indeed, Friedman, Cohen, and Goldstone are Jewish — and Kouchner is of Jewish descent! (For one of myriad examples of how Israel is characterized in the non-Western world, try this.)

And all this, of course, is just the tip of the iceberg if you add in all the obsessive United Nations resolutions, the boycott movements, the campus hate fests, and so on. At the time of writing, to take some random examples, an Israeli army officer who has been speaking out against the Goldstone report is reported to be “limiting his activities to the United States” because, as he says, “I know that if I try to do the same thing in Western European countries, pro-Palestinian groups may try to have me arrested for participating in the Gaza operation.” (Europe has, for this reason, become very dangerous for Israeli military and even civilian officials.) During a state visit to Brazil, Israeli President Shimon Peres has been called “Shimon Hitler” by demonstrators in a banner showing him with a Hitler moustache beside a swastika imposed on a Star of David.

Can you think of a single country, democratic or nondemocratic, in today’s world that is the target of anything approaching this degree of negative attention? Of course not. The only distant comparison is the intermittent focus on the actual brutality of the Iranian regime — but even there, a distinction is regularly, and properly, made between the regime and the population. No such distinction is made when it comes to Israel; government, army, and population are all vilified.

If I could have a wish, it would be that this year all the Holocaust commemorations (except in Israel itself) would be canceled. They would be replaced by conferences on why, six decades after the Holocaust, so much of the world’s energy and passion is channeled into the abuse of Israel.

    Hating Jews has always been the fashionable thing to do and Jews are always hated most when they dare to defend themselves against their attackers. Shame on those leftwing Jews that enable and embolden the attackers.

    my wife and kids are israeli arabs and we have been living in israel for several years now. israeli jews are the most decent people i’ve met across the world. sure, they are not perfect, but they have time and again gone out of their way to help and befriend us as non-jews/arabs, whatever so many times when they didn’t have to. i don’t believe any of the rubbish propaganda (read: lies) from ignorant people with a thirst for hate that have never met the decent, moral people they smear. i can’t say the same about the israeli arab muslims/palestinians, though, because although they are lovely people in their own right, they are generally drunk with irrational hate which poisons their society to the point i no longer enjoy spending time there. those are the facts.

    In the meantime, Israel is constantly developing products and technologies that improves our lives (ex. better burn treatment). If any country bashes Israel, I believe it is Israel that has the right to restrict selling products to those countries.

    Think of it this way, substitute “Israel” for “Saudi Arabia”. If Saudi Arabia developed a better treatment for burns, do you think that country would sell to Israel?

    Did you ever ask yourself “Why does everybody hate Jews”? Not everyone does but it’s a large minority.
    I’m not Jewish, but I have many friends that are and they seem normal enough to me. I’ve broached this question to some of my Jewish Friends and they don’t know, or at least wouldn’t answer.
    My theory is that it’s genetic. Some people are born with blue eyes, some with blond hair, some hating Jews.

    When Israel acts as dhimmi to the rest of the world, begging for its acceptance, the world loses its respect for Israel, just like in any relationship where the dominate one has no respect for the submissive one who always seeks the approval of the dominate one.

    Once Israel shows some real backbone and stands up for herself as a Jewish country and acting like the nation whose destiny as a light unto to the nations will the rest of the world respect her. This is why Israel must and will elect Moshe Feiglin as its next Prime MInsiter.

    To #6, when Israel acted assertively in Lebanon in 1984, in the territories in Operation Defensive Shield starting in 2002, in Lebanon in 2006, in Gaza in 2008-2009–didn’t exactly help Israel in the popularity department, did it? Acting assertively doesn’t seem to be the solution for age-old anti-Semitism, Islamic belligerency, Western decadence and illness. There might not be a solution–a problem to be continuously coped with, not one that the magician Moshe Feiglin can wave away with the magic wand of his immature, demagogic bluster.

    I agree, well, with everyone, but with the genetic perspective of Mr. Sanford, I’d also like to add that there is probably an inborn trait to protect one’s own. This can extend from one’s family to others perceived as one’s own (country, tribe, whatever). I would add two contradictory points to this. This is the basis for groups to have an autonomous state for their own protection (Armenians, Kurds perhaps, but certainly it was the basis for Zionism). Stateless people have had it bad. On the other hand, I think that we as a species need to get past this. This is truly the basis of American Exceptionalism.

    Israel is very much on its own. Europeans long for the completion of the Holocaust. Their growing Muslim population never even pretended to oppose the Holocaust.

    The American government and media is controlled by those who only desire to curry favor with both Europeans and the Muslim terrorists. There is no concession that Israel can offer that will change this.

    Israel needs to look to its own interests, by any means necessary; because those Americans who would help her are busy trying to defend themselves at home. The disappearance of a vocal appeasement movement is not a sign of Israel’s evil. It is a sign that reality is sinking in.

    The fact is that Israel lost the propaganda war back in the 70′s. That is because they didn’t take it seriously. When the PLO started claiming that Israel had stolen land from them in ’67, it was a serious mistake to not point out that 90+% of that land was Israeli land awarded to Israel when the UN created Israel and stolen from Israel in ’48.
    The Arabs (there are NO Palestinians) are trying to destroy Israel with propaganda, since the military option didn’t work out for them.
    Shows how stooooopid Muslims are. Unfortunately, propaganda warfare doesn’t require smarts, all they need is clever. If the Arabs had agrred to the White Paper of ’38, Israel today would be a strip mall on the road (unpaved) between Cairo and Damascus. Israel today is what decades of assault by Muslims made it.

    @ #6 Sorry, Mike, but I disagree. For centuries, much of the Western world has despised the Jews, but tolerated them because they were seen as weak. But in Israel, Jews have gained nationalistic fervor and have demonstrated themselves strong enough to fight off multiple enemy armies, and they are truly hated for this. The Europeans will specify they do not hate all Jews, they just hate Israel (implying it’s the Israeli Jews who are the problem). That’s because a weak, landless Jew is no threat to the Anti-Semitic world view, but a Jew able to defend himself is.

    #12 Mr. Information: Jews have had an uninterrupted presence on the west bank of the Jordan for thousands of years, long before the land was even called “Palestine.” Land was not “forced” away, it was granted by UN Resolution 181. And please invest in some English writing classes, though I doubt it’ll make much difference in understanding the drivel you write.

    In a sign that negotiations on an Israeli prisoner exchange for captive soldier Gilad Schalit were moving forward, Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh canceled a trip to Saudi Arabia.

    I admire the Jews/Israelis,
    they have released hundreds of prisoners and are still enduring rocket attacks.

    They have done everything in their power to bring back a young man that just happens to be a soldier.

    Also remember that this is the first Jewish soldier/captive ever to be brought back by the Arabs into modern Israel that was not in a body bag.

There are well over a thousand Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, being held without trial or charges under administrative detention laws, some are children below the age of 18. They are jailed in Israel which is actually against international law. The US pays handsomely for it. If they really wanted him back, they simply would have traded him.

    Let’s not worry about what the goyim overseas say. They didn’t build this country at all – we did. Let’s concentrate on the strengths we have and the assertiveness we need to display.

    Let’s start with dropping the term “Palestinian”. The resident Arabs are either tribes here for a long time (like the Cherkessim and the Druze), Jews in Judea who converted to Islam under immense pressure, or Egyptians, Syrians or Iraqis who came here because there was work.

    We have to state – time after time after time – that there is no such thing as “Palestine” – because there isn’t. We have to state – time after time after time – that Arabs who wish to live here as Israelis are welcome to do so, and back that up with concrete action.

    Then finally, we must make sure that this land is governed by rule of law, and that the rule of law is applied equally. Incitement by Arabs must be punished by arrest and trial – no matter how much violence they threaten; only then can we honestly seek to seriously punish Jews for incitement. Terror by Arabs must be met with the death penalty – swift and sure, so that we are not feeding a hostile Arab prison population. Terror must be treated as rebellion and treason and punished accordingly. Only then can we demand that Jews not act against Arabs here and sentence them severely.

    Foreign incitement and espionnage must be dealt with as acts of war; the governments of the violating countries must be warned that espionnage will receive the maximum sentence, and that efforts to weaken the security of this nation will be dealt with as an act of war. Their assets will be seized, their embassies and consulates seized, their property will be seized. The copperators with foreign governments – like Peace Now and their ilk – must be dissolved, and their leaders imprisoned or executed, depending on the level of treason they have committed. Those who would destroy the Israeli polity must lose their chance to continue to destroy this country from within.

    This is just a beginning, but with that beginning, our government can reclaim its sovereignty here. The days of the falafel republic must end.

    The United Nations also did not endorse the concept of a “Jewish State.” UN General Assembly Resolution 181 passed at the UN on November 29th, 1947 by a vote of 33 to 13 with 10 abstentions. This vote was dominated by the Europeans as most Third World countries were not members of the UN but still ruled as colonies. The resolution called for the partition of Palestine into two states. One state had a tiny Jewish population and a very large Palestinian Arab majority. The other state was not demographically a “Jewish State.”

    It is the height of hypocrisy to call for some of it to be implemented (because it is what you want) while being in violation of numerous other resolutions notably R242. It is not, therefore, a question of having a UN resolution on your “side” but of meeting international obligations that has been signed up to as, amongst other things, a member of the UN.
    This is selective UN resolution amnesia at its worst.
    The persecution of the Jews in Europe cannot rationally be used to justify the persecution of another people and to create a homeland in the Middle East for European Jews who had suffered at the hands of other Europeans.

    The Balfour ammendment was enacted by the British when they were in control of that area of the middle east. It called for the creation of a Jewish state which included all of present day Isreal, all of Palestine, and all of Trans-Jordan. This was presented to the League of Nations and voted upon. The League agreed with Brittain’s view. Brittain on the other hand split the land at the Jordan River and gave the eastern side to the deposed Hashemites of Arabia. The Saudi’s had thrown them out and took over Meca and Medina. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem fomented attacks on the Jewish population. This is historical fact that can be validated, not like the dreamed up facts you foist. An example of what I’m discussing here is the Hebron Massacre. There are many other examples of attacks on the Jewish population by the endemic Arabs, I can go on and on.

    As for your quoting Ben Gurion, I’d like to know the scource. As far as I know, Ben Gurion did his best to keep the Arab population within Israel’s borders. That is why 20% of Israel’s population is Arab. Please check your scources carefully. It is very common for the Arab propaganda machine to attribute quotes to people who didn’t make them. It is a basic part of their Koranic culture. A lie that is believed is a terrible weapon and they use it continually.

    There is a concept when dealing with the moslem mentality and it is called Kubbar. Essentially it means that anyone who is not a moslem may be attacked, robbed, enslaved, or even murdered at the moslem’s whim. Basically it states that anyone who is not a moslem is property and may be taken by a moslem. That and fact that is alright to kill in order to spread the religion; and, that it is not just alright to lie but it is required to gain the advantage over your nonmoslem adversary.     Don’t confuse land sovereignty with land ownership. The Arabs did NOT have sovereignty. It’s ironic how Palestinians vehemently claim sovereignty over a piece of land which they’ve never governed. The Ottomans ruled over the land for centuries, until they transferred sovereignty to the British. The British transferred partial sovereignty to the Jews, as since the 1917 Balfour Declaration, they had intended to help the Jews re-establish their homeland. Please note this was LONG before the Holocaust.

    In terms of land ownership, most of Palestine was owned by wealthy absentee landlords living in Damascus or Cairo, not local Arabs. Arriving Jews didn’t steal land, they bought it -often at inflated prices- from these landlords. In his 1978 memoirs, Transjordan’s King Abdullah stated, “It is made quite clear to all… that the Arabs are as prodigial in selling their land as they are in useless wailing and weeping.” Local Arabs lived in the more fertile West Bank, leaving the Jews to purchase land along the marshy, malaria-infested coastal plain. That’s why Jews ended up living there.

    Your Ben-Gurion quote is a fabrication. It’s been attributed not only to Ben-Gurion, but to Israeli Northern District Commissioner Israel Koening (see http://www.honestreporting.co.uk/articles/critiques/Sourcing_Quotes_the__Pilger_Way.asp ). Instead of parroting off what the rabid anti-Israel crowd says, find a more balanced source. Try this: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/David_Ben-Gurion , with quotes like: “Under no circumstances must we touch land belonging to fellahs or worked by them. Only if a fellah leaves his place of settlement, should we offer to buy his land, at an appropriate price.”

    It’s ignorant and naive to state “The persecution of the Jews in Europe cannot rationally be used to justify … to create a homeland in the Middle East…” You’re simply weaving the typical Left-wing narrative of how Israel was created out of post-Holocaust guilt, nothing to do with diaspora Jews yearning for centuries to return to their rightful homeland. You ignore the fact that A) Jews have kept an uninterrupted presence in “Palestine” for thousands of years, and B) about 40% of Jewish immigrants to Israel come from ARAB lands, mostly between 1948-1952, but, starting as far back as the Jewish migration from Yemen in the 1880′s.

    You claim Arabs were persecuted by the Jews, but it was the Arabs who rose up in revolt against the Jews in the 1920′s and 30′s. Even before WWII, it was obvious that the growing Jewish and Arab populations in Palestine would be ungovernable under one state, so the British decided to partition their Palestine Mandate to create a homeland for each. The Arabs rejected the offer of partial sovereignty, as they still do to this day. The Jews accepted it, as their agenda has always been simply to have a homeland, as do the Armenians, the Turks, and many other ethnic groups. It is curious to see how Muslims vociferously rejected the British partitioning of Palestine, but none opposed the British partitioning of India -to create Muslim Pakistan.

    And “selective UN resolution amnesia” works both ways. For you cannot beat your chest that UN Resolution 242 must be implemented, while ignoring Resolution 181. BTW, R242, besides calling for Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza/WB, calls for “…acknowledgment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force.” When many Palestinians (e.g. Hamas) won’t even recognize the existence of Israel, and nations like Lebanon and Syria are still technically at war with Israel, it’s hard to argue that the Arabs are doing their best to comply with R242 as well…

    Lay off the Left-wing kool-aid and find yourself a less biased source.

    Nice to make your acquaintance. I’m that guy from comment #30 who wants Mr. Hornik to stop using destructive (to us) terms like “Palestinian” in his articles about resident Arabs in the Land of Israel.

    My quals to open my mouth? I’m a student of history, have helped edit books like The Legal Foundations of the Borders of Israel Under International Law, by Howard Grief (Mazo Publishing). I live in Samaria and know what it is like to await attack from Arab countries because my leaders haven’t the guts to strike first.

    While I do not like the fact, it is still true. It was one of the goals of the 1948-49 War of Independence to rid the Galilee of as many Arabs as possible. It’s not something you advertise. But it is still true.

    Glad to meet you. There were times on this blog that I felt alone except for Marie Claude who kept encouraging me. You’re right sometimes the truth is distasteful and hard to take. At least we don’t deny it, or lie about it.

    As for the word Palestinian, I met a bunch of them when I was a kid. They were all Jewish. Palestinian was the generic name for anyone who came from that region. It was adopted after the 67′ war by the Arabs to distinguish themselves from other Arabs. They in fact created a new national identity which never existed. Before that the regional people, depending on where they lived, were Egyptian, Syrian, Lebanese, or Jordanian. Only the Jews were Palestinians.

    This is truly a holy war ~ between Almighty God and satan, good versus evil, played out through the Jews and Christians versus the descendants of Cain, Esau and Ishmael. He tried to prevent Christ’s first coming by influencing Herod to kill the Jewish baby boys, and now he’s doing the same with His second coming. How it infuriates him that God always brings victory to little Israel in time of war!

After you start reading your Bible, you’ll suddenly understand why most of the world hates Israel for absolutely no reason…
