A Remarkable Lie, from Your Taxpayer-Funded NOAA
The following remarkable statement now appears on the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) site:
For detecting climate change, the concern is not the absolute temperature — whether a station is reading warmer or cooler than a nearby station placed on grass — but how that temperature changes over time.
The root of the problem? NOAA’s network for measuring temperature in the United States has become corrupted by artificial heat sources and other issues. These problems introduce warm biases into the temperature measurements that are then used by the government and others to support manmade global warming. So as a reaction to criticism about these problems … NOAA now claims that the accuracy of the measured temperature no longer matters!
Let’s take a closer look at this amazing statement to see what it actually says:

Are they truly saying the accuracy of the temperature readings don’t matter? Yes, they are! But why?
The NOAA climate measuring network is so broken there is literally no way to fix it. Reacting to criticism of this annoying fact — and to cover up its significance — NOAA now says accuracy simply doesn’t matter, the temperature reading itself is not as important as the trend. This is clearly a deceptive political statement meant to distract the reader from the truth.
Of course the accuracy of the temperature reading matters!
Remember, a warming of only one degree Fahrenheit over the last 160 years is what the warmists claim to be evidence of manmade global warming. (And of course, half of that warming occurred from 1910 to 1945, before they claim the presence of any significant human influence.)
Temperature changes of tenths of a degree are being used to justify dramatic policy directives by the Environmental Protection Agency, dictums that would profoundly alter life as we know it: taxes levied on virtually anything that produces carbon dioxide. But it’s not only the accuracy of the temperature that is in play. If the temperature readings are off by a few tenths of a degree, this could significantly affect the longer term trend as well. If the temperature trend starts from an artificially elevated reading, the end result will be an artificially inflated measure of any global warming. The slope of the trend itself could be exaggerated by inaccurate temperature measurements.
So what exactly is wrong with NOAA’s temperature readings?
NOAA has five classes of climate measuring sites. The best sites, categories 1 and 2, require the site to be placed over grass or low local vegetation. According to section 2.2 of NOAA’s Climate Reference Network (CRN) Site Information Handbook:
The most desirable local surrounding landscape is a relatively large and flat open area with low local vegetation in order that the sky view is unobstructed in all directions except at the lower angles of altitude above the horizon. …
[For categories 1 and 2 there can be] no artificial heating sources within 100 meters (330 feet). …
[For the lower quality stations 3 to 5 there must be] no artificial heating source within 10 meters (33 feet).
The integrity of the site as a reliable climate measuring station is completely dependent on these criteria. Is the government adhering to its own standards?
In a landmark 2007 research project to determine the quality of the United States climate measuring network, meteorologist Anthony Watts set out to get some answers. He recruited more than 650 volunteers to photograph the climate stations around the country.
What they have found is astounding. A full ninety percent of the United States climate measuring sites do not meet the government’s own criteria for accurate temperature measurement!
Again, that number is ninety percent.
Environmentalists are invariably people that want others to use less energy!

Once upon a time, somebody else claimed that accurate temperature measurements didn’t matter, too.
His name was George Adamski. He claimed to be a scientist who worked at Mount Palomar Observatory in California. Well, he was half-honest; he actually ran a hot dog stand at the foot of the road going up to the observatory. (One of my old teachers, an actual astronomer, once told me that Adamski made the best Coney Island foot-longs to be found west of the Boardwalk.)
Adamski spent most of the Fifties claiming to be in contact with superior beings from the planet Venus. According to him, they were tall, blond, blue-eyed types who came here in flying saucers to “lead us to higher consciousness”. This “leading” consisted of demands that we ban all nuclear power, get rid of technology, and become an agrarian socialist culture, after which the superior Venusians would give us their wonderful technology so we could fly around the Universe as we pleased. Adamski gave detailed diagrams of exactly how their saucers were laid out inside, but was conspicuously silent about what these wondrous machines actually ran on.
Adamski also stated that under its cloud cover, Venus was a “green and pleasant land”, not unlike the Garden of Eden- or Southern California. Complete with gentle rains and sunny days for most of the year. He maintained that someone taken there would find it almost indistinguishable from Earth, except that it was nicer.
When, in 1965, the Soviet Venera probe reached the surface of Venus, and sent back data showing that it was an 800-degree Centigrade Hell of toxic gases, Adamski said that it didn’t matter. You see, the Venusians were using their advanced technology to “hide the truth” from Venera’s instruments, because we “weren’t ready” to become good citizens of the Galactic Commonwealth (which was, of course, ruled by the Aryan-looking Venusians).
Adamski died not long after that, which means he never had to realize that he was a completely delusional idiot. Unless of course he was simply a compulsive liar and confidence trickster. (I call the odds six-five and pick ‘em.)
The parallels to NOAA’s present “position” are not only obvious, they’re somewhere between frightening and infuriating. Frightening because of the lengths some people with an agenda (Oh, let’s be honest and call them what they are- fanatics) will go to to force others to accede to their “vision”. Infuriating because as yet, nobody seems to be doing the sensible thing, namely charging them with scientific misconduct and gross misuses of taxpayers’ money, and at least firing them, if not putting them behind bars for twenty years or so.
When I see NOAA behaving like a bunch of delusional UFO contactee cultists, I conclude that the agency has outlived whatever usefulness it may have had, and should be “defunded”, i.e. abolished.
We can certainly do better than this.
(P.S.- No, the parallel between UFO contactee “agendas” and that of the deep-ecology left is not a coincidence. What elements of the ecology movement’s philosophy that did not come from the German Romantics and John Muir came almost straight from the UFO cultists. Google “Donald Ware” sometime.)

Doctor Hanson, as a Geography student over 15 years ago, we already knew about this, that most monitoring stations weren’t located properly. Call it 16 years.

Gee, for a bunch of scientists, the ones involved in “climate science” don’t seem too worried about accuracy.
All this fuss over “climate change” or whatever the radical leftists call it this week is a gigantic waste of time and money. Our Earth has been around for many millenia and will be here for a few more after we’re gone. The mechanisms that the planet uses to regulate itself will never be known, especially to sloppy scientists whose only goal is to insure more funding. Mankind is incapable of any long-term effect on the planet. The sooner everyone wakes up to that simple fact, the sooner we can start voting out gullible politicians who believe in the hoax of “climate change”.

From the above quote, “most” temperature measuring stations can be inferred to be ‘lower quality’ heating stations, category 3 to 5. Please update the background data – how many of each category of stations are there? And why would NOAA be so stingy with high-quality measurements?
They’re apparently not stingy about hiring unscientific polemicists to manipulate public opinion.
And how many of the ‘high quality’ stations are in violation of the 330-foot limit?
Of course, if a majority of all stations are in violation, their measurements must be given due skepticism, particularly regarding warming trends – which the violations would bias positively. So on first glance, Mr. Horn’s argument seems credible. But if NOAA must take criticism for its politicization of its reporting of measurements, so must Mr. Horn for his sloppy rebuttal. His insistence, that absolute temperature matters, is dead on.

No one believes that government funding could possibly corrupt the “scientists’” objectivity. Just as no one can conceive of the magnitude of a trillion dollars–”trillion” being the new “billion,” a number which itself is difficult to fully comprehend.
I think no one, taxpayer or otherwise, can conceive of the huge amounts of money taken from taxpayers and re-directed to favored causes–especially, as in the case of global warmists, when the favored cause can work the figures and help the government to justify taking even more power for themselves (while making RICH the insiders, who know where to invest because they know what rules, regulations and taxes they will impose).

Having worked at many weather stations around the world i nall industries – military, Government, private sector – NOT ONE site has their meteorological equipment in Cat. 1 & 2 you speak of.
The only station that came close to adhering to (some sensors were located on the dome which has since been dismantled and the science stations moved to the new station) a portion of Cat. 1 & 2 thresholds was Admundsen-Scott South Pole Station.
McMurdo Station, Antarctica’s weather sensors are ALL on the roof of the operations building.
Suffice to say, South Pole Station recorded its coldest winter recently since its opening/ weather inception of 1958. ‘Global warming’ indeed.
NOAA’s NBDC has such bogus buoy readings that much of the trans Atlantic trips via ship are provided by private industry.
Lastly, Mr. Watts needs to find volunteers to witness NOAA sites in Alaska, Hawaii. MS-DOS programs STILL in use, dated hardware whose last ‘updated version’ is from the early-mid 70′s. Whereas the data needed to be ‘smoothed’ over constantly. Frightening stuff..
The AGW scam has (for me at least) driven a stake into the heart of science. I find it difficult to believe much coming out of scientific research these days when it comes with a frantic warning. Add to that the MSM with their press release reporting – very little is being ‘investigated’ unless it has a Palin attached to it. Pathetic!
You can add weather scientists to the list (and growing) of untrustworthy groups/people – people looking out for their own interests instead of that of their fellow man. Politicians (and lawyers in particular) – used car salesmen – gypsy contractors – and now climate change scientists. I’m sure there are others that are ‘worthy of being on the list.

Look, it’s clear that the question has become so damned political, regarding ones views on regulation and taxes that most of the rest of the “data” on both sides is suspect. I must point out however, that having a heat compromised does entail the necessity to compare TRENDS in the compromised site, but also means that the site cannot be blended in with older data of supposedly non-compromised sites from the past. The deniers say that the data is too muddled or fraudulent to ever prove anything, which of course, even if it is correct does not show that the planet is not AGWing, just that you can’t tax us until you PROVE that it is warming AND that we can do something about it.
I certainly do not think that it is a slam dunk yes or no for warming at this point. Deniers want to deny at so many different levels and warmists want to affirm at so many different levels that the “science” is getting away from us.

Obviously this does not prove any kind of warming, but it sure doesn’t disprove it either.
Since there is no metadata for most of the sites, how do you know when the contamination occurred? How do you know that the entirety of the trend is due to gradual increase in localized contamination.
The above article also does not go into the problems of gradual urbanization in the vicinity of almost all the weather stations. This also introduces a warming trend.
Face it, the only existing evidence for AGW are the computer models. But as been shown by many, the models are worthless. How can you model the climate, when we don’t have any idea how most of it works.
If you want to impose new taxes and you want to rework the economy of the entire world, you have to prove there actually is a problem.

The models are demonstrably bad. not only can they not show any correlation with past observed weather, they have forcing code in them, commented on by the programmer. they had to be fudged to even produce what was desired – even with bad, cherry-picked data trending their way!

Mr. Horn: Part of the corruption of course is the creation of an illusory “warming” by systematically excluding those stations which are *not* artificially heated. Thiss “march of the Thermometers from higher altitudes to low, from higher latitudes to low, and from rural to urban sites, is well documented- over a period in which the number of US stations used by NCDC has been reduced from some 1200 to a mere 134. There are four stations in all of California: three on the beach, and one at SF airport.
Lets face it, the world populace has been had, big time. I followed links to sites mentioned about station locations, surveys, etc. I have done so numerous times before. As always, the locations of recording stations leaves more than a lot to be desired. It was estimated that up to 89% of the stations were poorly located & were providing mediocre data results.
Perhaps just as surprising to me is that the number of surface temperature recording stations around the world, has significantly decreased. Seems someone did not want to show or explain the locating of hundreds of stations around the globe. The people telling us the planet is warming, along with using extrapolations & other means to develop data from missing information, also do not want to include stations located in extremely cold climates. The story is, many cold location stations data is no longer gathered. So, Siberia temperatures, Himalayan temperatures are no longer gathered. Now does anyone think there could be some sort of inappropriate manipulating when the majority of stations whose data is no longer gathered just happen to be located in extremely cold climates?
The information we can recover from these sites, and many reports on these issues, along with ClimateGate & other revelations about incorrect data used to justify the UN IPCC reports, suggest there are serious ulterior motives to all of this. Never mind the UN wants a global taxation system that funds them, lucrative & independent of nation states dues, never mind Dr. Jones at the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit’s ClimateGate scandal, was cleared by a panel & reprimanded only for his messy record keeping skills, was cleared by a panel chaired by a man heavily invested in “wind energy”. Never mind all of the solutions call for some sort of government control of virtually everything. Never mind we would have to literally shut down the planet for three to four decades, just to lower the temperature by one or one & one half degrees Fahrenheit.

Global warming is about as much science fact as obama being Constitutionally president of the US.
Obama was born in Hawaii. Even if he wasn’t, his mother is an American citizen.
He can’t be a British citizen because his mother was never legally married to his father. (IE, his father never divorced his first wife.)

The NOAA is correct in that stability and precision are what matters to detect global warming, not accuracy. Imagine that little kids messed with the calibration of the thermometers, but since that incident the readings are a consistent amount above or below the true reading.
The difficulty is that the “little kids” continue to mess with calibration in 90% of the stations, so the error is constantly changing. The “bad station” graph in the Watts page from comment #15 is typical. The NOAA has models that attempt to correct those 90% of stations that are crappy. But this is pretty much what the entire AGW scam is built on – models. Nothing but models with very little to tie them to reality.
Another point is that the warmers refuse to release the details of how they take the raw station data and “correct” it for the known problems. I have seen broad descriptions of the methods that some of them use, and they are ridiculous.
For example, Hansen uses a method called zero lights. He takes a night time picture of the US, then checks the coordinates of the stations that he is using. If the pixel at that coordinate is “dark”, he declares that station to be rural and hence “pure”. All surrounding stations (some more than 500 miles awary) are adjusted to match the nearest “rural” station. The problem with this method are many. For example, at the scale he’s using, each pixel covers something like 50 or 60 square miles. If there are just a few outside lights in that region, then the pixel is going to appear dark.
Now Hansen could have used mapquest to examine the actual area around the stations, but this was either too hard, or it didn’t generate the result he was looking for.
Those of us who have worked in quality control understand the importance of using standards in making measurements. All of our instruments were calibrated and tested in accordance to standards defined by ANSI. Temperature measurements for many weather stations have not obeyed the standards established by NOAA. Anthony Watts has identified this as the root problem in climate monitoring; namely, most of the sites, ~ 90 per cent, do not meet the NOAA standard for temperature measuring sites. If this were my temperature data set there would be a lot of data deleted and probably a plan to start over in choosing locations before collecting any more fraudulent data. Some of the site biased data might be able to be saved if the site bias could be determined assuming that it didn’t change. Also, there would be a change in the people responsible for collecting the temperature data.
The statement by the head of the NOAA that absolute temperatures do not matter reflects a misunderstanding of why the measurements are made and why the sites were set up around the world. The argument that the rate of change in the temperature is all that is needed to verify that the planet is warming is fallacious. In order to establish uncertainty limits on the rate of change in the temperature requires a measurement of a temperature. How can one use data from a site where the site is introducing a systematic error that may be larger that the actual change in the temperature or the bias may actually change with time? To make any assertion about the temperature data without correcting the data for the systematic errors means that the interpreter of the data is assuming that the changes are only the result of random sources of error or that the systematic the error can be neglected. Anthony Watts has shown repeatedly that the site systemic errors cannot be neglected. Effectively, because so many sites are questioned as possessing a systematic bias due to the site, anyone who knowingly uses the data from NOAA biased sources to predict future trends in the global temperature is committing scientific fraud.
Add to the list of unreliable scientists wallowing in their own self interests ; fusion researchers, evolutionist scientists and cultural minority theorists .
Plus the ever expanding grasping ,groveling and grubbing for grants and greenbacks.
The truth and mans insatiable quest for the same ,gave way to careers and retirement packages decades ago. Our government happily finances this squirming hoard of whores and industries thrive to convince us it is all genuinely pivotal to our lives. Yeah, it feels a bit warmer today.

Trend has been to move weather station thermometers to urban areas while the trend in temps has been towards warming. They are correct it is not the absolute temps that matter but the trend!!!

Commonsense would dictate that if a country cannot provide accurate temperature readings, whatever purpose for which such temperature data is then used will automatically provide flawed outcomes… a case of garbage in garbage out.
NOAA should be condemned for claiming that the accuracy of the measured temperature no longer matters. It suggests that certain individuals have failed to satisfactorily discharge their duties and responsibilities and are now using this claim to brush aside any criticism, and to protect their positions.
A thorough investigation should be undertaken into NOAA if this is the sort of attitude it is displaying. It brings into disrepute the credibility and highest of standards people expect from NOAA.

You can go further than that. By now it’s up to around 91%. (Also that lovely location in Fairmont, CA, turns out to be — ugh — mounted on concrete!
Oddly enough, the wastewater plants have lower trends (the mass amount of waste heat masks the trends). But urban sites definitely have higher trends than rural. And, ironically, it turns out that urban sites are better placed (re. microsite issues), on average, than rural sites.
There’s an equipment bias as well. MMTS readings are a lot different from Stevenson screens (CRS). (And ASOS setups, typical of airports, have much higher trends than either MMTS or CRS.)
Not only that, but most sites have seen several station moves apiece over the decades, and that totally throws things out of whack.
BTW, I know what I’m saying. I personally made over 200 of those surveys (either direct or via satellite), supplemented another hundred, and evaluated the whole (1000+) shebang! it is a worms’ nest. A squirmy one.
And, yes, trends are affected by bad siting as well as absolute temperatures. Badly sited stations tend to run hotter faster in warming trends (and colder faster during cooling trends, as the effect “undoes” itself). And yes, I know what I’m saying here, too: I’ve run all those raw data trend numbers for all 1221 USHCN stations, as well, by both site quality and equipment type.
I would conclude that there has been warming, but it has been exaggerated. A straight 20th Century average of NOAA USHCN trends (to 2006, ungridded), is +0.14C/century for raw data — and +0.59C/century for “adjusted” data.
What I would like to see;
A campaign commercial with either Meg Whittman or Carlie Fiorina standing on the roof next to the Santa Monica USHCN surface station. Let one of our girls break out an oven thermometer and take a reading of the tar and shake roof next to NOAA’s thermometer.
Then let Brown and Boxer talk about “our best scientists say..blah blah blah.”
That would be worth the price of admission.

I’ll add a slight correction to the article. Only CRN1 stations need to be 100 meters from a heat source/sink. CRN2 are within 30 meters. This conforms well with the NWS “Hundred Foot Rule” for acceptable stations.
To make matters worse, there are only two CRN1 stations that are not ASOS sites in airports in the entire system. (There would have been three, but we will have to downgrade Fairmont, CA!)
The problem with ASOS sites is that they are almost exclusively in airports. Yes, those often satisfy the distance requirements, but the equipment has known, severe issues (the infamous HO-83 bias, et al.), and airports themselves have seen a large increase in traffic and either are urban sites or have seen a great deal of urban incursion. For those reasons, ASOS stations have seen a lot more warming than those with other equipment. (None of this is adjusted for or taken into account.)
So over a third of the CRN1 and 2 sites are essentially useless.
All in all, only around 6 percent of USHCN stations are useful. Most of those are the old manual Stevenson Screens. (We wanted to compare the trends of CRN1 & CRN2 stations that use electronic MMTS equipment — but there are too few to make a decent statistical sample!)
If the private sector were in charge of the USHCN, heads would roll.
A clock does not need to be set correctly to measure the passage of time. A thermometer with a constant bias can detect a temperature trend. Pretty basic stuff, guys.
No, not so basic. A poor site affects the trend itself, not just the offset:
1.) A poor microsite will tend to increase a trend — be it warming or cooling. Since we’ve seen overall warming in the last three decades, there is an overall warming trend (sic) bias.
2.) A poor mesosite (i.e., urban stations) will warm faster during warm phases and cool slower during cool phases. At least in the US. This may be because urban sites are becoming continually worse and worse. But regardless of the reason, this is what the raw trend data shows. This effect also applies (to a proportionally lesser extent) to suburban stations.
The recent Menne study turns out to have been incorrect, having used a badly incomplete (and entirely unreviewed) dataset, as well as having inexplicably failed to isolate equipment.

Well, in this case the it is not merely the offset that is affected by micro- and meso-site isses. It’s the trend as well.

These stations were never intended to measure tenths of a degree changes over a century. The entire min.-max. methodology alone is too crude for that.
I don’t doubt for a minute that there has been measurable warming over the last 30 years. But the sites are so wonky that the measured warming trend is actually less than standard deviation.
