A Border ‘Invasion’? Let’s Dial Back the Immigration Rhetoric, Please
There are those who believe that — in light of Arizona’s hateful tantrums against not just illegal immigrants but also brown skin on murals, ethnic studies, and teachers with accents — it’s open season on Latinos.
And when they look south to the U.S.-Mexico border, one of their greatest fears is that this attitude has now gone beyond talk radio and asinine legislative proposals and spread to the men and women who’ve sworn an oath to protect the border from would-be terrorists and smugglers of drugs, guns, and immigrants – if not necessarily from aspiring gardeners, maids, and nannies.
Due in part to decades of allegations of brutality, racism, and mistreatment of immigrants, the U.S. Border Patrol has — since it was founded in 1924 — never had a good relationship with the Latino community in the United States.The fact that, today, about half of all Border Patrol agents are Latino hasn’t done much to change that.
Meanwhile, the relationship with U.S. Customs and Border Protection has not been any better.
Now, in light of the increasingly acrimonious tone of the immigration debate, those who police the border actually buy into this nonsense that the United States is undergoing an “invasion.” If so, that could make life on the border especially dangerous.
Just ask the family of 42-year-old Anastasio Hernandez Rojas. An illegal immigrant who lived in San Diego for 25 years and worked in construction, Hernandez was apprehended after a traffic stop and handed over to the Border Patrol, which deported him to Mexico. But since his five U.S.-born children were still in the United States with their mother, Hernandez did what any father would do: He tried to get back to his kids. In the process of trying to re-enter, Hernandez was apprehended, put on a bus with other illegal immigrants, and transported back to the border for return to Mexico.
But once at the border, something went horribly wrong. According to multiple witnesses, Hernandez was separated from the group and, already handcuffed, placed face down on the ground. Several officers from Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection pummeled him with punches and kicks while, at one point, as many as 20 officers swarmed the scene. One of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents pulled out a Taser gun and motioned to the others to step back. Again, according to witnesses, and cell phone video, the agent fired at least five jolts into Hernandez, who eventually stopped moving. About a half hour later, he was transported to a local hospital, where 24 hours later, he was declared brain dead.
A spokesperson for U.S. Customs and Border Protection said that Hernandez was resisting arrest and that the officers took the appropriate action to ensure their safety.
“Congress must stop playing politics with this issue and create more avenues for people to come to this country legally so stories like this aren’t repeated.”
…. Why? Why should we let criminals, socialists and communists run across the border? Why?

Could you at least be honest and say mexicans since the US border patrol is 1,000x more civil then any border guards in all of “latin Amercia”. The only ppl who believe the US border patrol and such as racists tend to be racists who believe they have the right to hate white ppl and to cross the border whenever they feel like it.

Rather than vilify Americans, and the federal agents employed to deal with illegal immigrants, he should focus on WHY the American people are increasingly demanding enforcement of our immigration laws.
Is it:
1. The large, angry protests where protesters wave the Mexican flag, desecrate our flag, engage in anti-White hate speech, and demand that California be returned to Mexico?
2. The homophobia demonstrated by recent Latino immigrants? Here in San Francisco, recent Latino immigrants are attacking gay and transgender Latinos, some of whom were granted political asylum because of the rampant homophobia in Latin America. 3. The constant demands that we create a bilingual society to accommodate Hispanic immigrants? While California has large numbers of immigrants from China, Russia, and India, all three groups do their best to learn English. One seldom hears, “Press one for Cantonese,” or “Press one for Russian,” or “Press one for Hindi.”
4. The air of entitlement to scarce jobs and public services?
5. All of the above?

While some conservatives do cling to easily debunked illegal immigration myths, there isn’t any evidence that the border patrol are racists acting rashly on unfounded charges of “invasion”. Mr. Naverette’s anecdotal evidence can be easily countered with various stories of border patrol effectively assisting illegals in distress. It’s not the Mexican police who risk their lives like chasing human traffickers, or possibly risk charges of negigence when they resort to force.
As much as Latinos would like to play the Nazi card on the AZ law, the fact is, deportations and police authority to ask detainees for legal papers aren’t terribly rare around the world. There are a precious few illegal aliens in this country whose motherland enforce our brand of immigration policy – lax, permissive, forced to cater to a powerful immigration lobby and a dominant party that answers to that lobby. There ain’t to “pro illegal immigration” group of our size in South Korea. Every major party in that country stands for “our country”.
Of course, the USA isn’t a largely (racailly) homogenous nation with 10% immigration population. More than half of the country are non whites or came from abroad. Which is exactly why the AZ law is necesary.
You are wrong. It’s not the tone of the immigration debate that is making the border dangerous. It’s the GD foreigners sneaking across the border and then being awarded amnesty! You use one bad story to prove your point. Why don’t you talk millions of the Americans that have been murdered, raped, molested, robbed etc.. by ILLEGAL immigrants. When the current administration REFUSES to address the issue at all, the rhetoric is going to be dialed up. I feel terrible for Mr. Rojas if he was just a (relatively) innocent man caught up in the border struggles; whatever the truth of that matter, it is tragic that he died and left his children more alone than if he had chosen to stay in Mexico. (What a shame he did not instead attempt to apply for US citizenship from his home country.) The truth is, however, we have dead ranchers, kidnapped women and children, and dead border patrol agents whose suffering shows that we are engaged in a war. People die in wars, innocent or not.
We need to close the borders, period, until we get this sorted out. We need troops to stop the men coming in with automatic weapons and explosives, now. Once the flow has been stopped, we can work on revising our immigration standards so that those who are here illegally for a job can apply for citizenship and the criminals and deadbeats can be sent back South where their home countries can deal with them. It’s not that America does not want immigration; we NEED a good, healthy flow of new, energetic, law-abiding people who can keep our culture and markets vibrant and active. We do NOT need anchor babies, illegal immigrants on welfare, drug smugglers, and criminals.
Those who are here illegally and who may be separated from family by the borders closing need to realize that this is their own fault, not America’s, and their families are not going to implode without their presence for a while. (I can personally attest that there are hundreds of thousands of American military families whose spouses are not present, and we do fine without our men breaking the law to get to us.) This is not about Mr. Rojas and the millions of Hispanics illegally present in the U.S. – this is about rancher Robert Krentz and the millions of Californians, Arizonans, New Mexicans, and Texans who live in fear that this violence will spill onto them, or worse, their wives and children who must live in an area that was once home but is now a war zone.
The state of our borders is the fault of both Republicans, who saw a cheap labor supply, and Democrats, who saw a pliable voting pool. Illegal Hispanic immigrants have been used as willing pawns by BOTH parties. Neither party has a right to hold our border hostage to force the hand of the other. The border belongs to American citizens, and the ones living next to it are begging, BEGGING, for help and support. In the end, I stand with the ordinary American who is in trouble, for he is my brother and she is my sister.
By the way, the literal definition of “homicide” is the death of a person at the hands of another human being. That can be many, many things that are not crimes, including self-defense, state execution, and unwanted but necessary lethal force delivered by a law enforcement official. Let me repeat that: a homicide is not necessarily a crime. Only if it is ruled a murder is it a crime. If the man’s death was in part due to meth use – well, I suspect there was a lot more going on there than Mr. Navarette communicated in this article.
There are five types of homicide:
1. Criminal – premediated murder, for example
2. Negligent – Deaths caused by shoddy construction
3. Accidental – Traffic accidents
4. Justifiable – Self-defense
5. Commendable – Pre-emptive action taken to prevent a worse situation; a sniper taking out a car bomber
Ruben, when are you going to address the fact that thousands of indigenous people from central and southern Mexico that still speak their tribal languages are wanting to immigrate to the US because their lives are so bad in their native homelands? The spectacle of native peoples that have, over the centuries, withstood the worst abuses of colonialism and maintained their cultures in the face of unrelenting cultural, economic and political assault and that are now voting with their feet is a sad and telling one for Mexico. Is it not time for Mexico to clean its own house and provide a decent life for it’s own citizens and stop blaming the US for all its problems? You see, if Mexicans could provide a good life for themselves in their own country there would be no “border problem”.

The story of Mr. Rojas is hardly an archetype except in the sense that once again, had he stayed in his own country he might be alive. The concept of staying and making their respective countries a better place to live seems to be a concept lost on far too many Latinos. What Navarrette would really like are no border controls at all, just an unhindered flow northward of all of Mexico’s poverty and ignorance, crime and violence. People are tired of illegal immigration and lawlessness. Hispanics right now are the biggest offenders, sorry to be honest. The old meme of “these are hard-working people” doesn’t wash anymore. First of all, some of them are criminals, secondly, being hard-working is merely a basic standard everyone should meet. Most of us are hard-working, but that doesn’t excuse lawbreaking.
States and municipalities are running out of money, we don’t have the funds to build the new schools to educate the children of illegal aliens. Most of the population growth in the US is coming from immigration right now so anyone we let in should have skills that are in demand. Sadly we already have too many undereducated people with low skills, we don’t have enough jobs for them now. Those jobs also don’t pay well enough to enable these people to pay enough taxes to offset the government services and health care they require.
The nation is broke, and the net economic equation of allowing millions of additional poor people into the country isn’t adding up in our favor. America needs to be competitive in the global market now, we don’t have an enormous jobs engine for lower skilled workers like we did in the industrial revolution. We are losing jobs at the low end, not gaining them. It doesn’t help that those of us who support the rule of law are being labeled as bigots either.
The story of Mr. Hernandez is tragic but it is not about immigration. Rather it is yet another example of police brutality which is truly a growing problem in the US. Police exert extreme violence on people daily, ranging from citizens/legals to illegals, from teenagers to grandmothers, black, white, yellow and brown. Americans have grown so frustrated with the chaos, lawlessness, and vulgarity of our now pagan society that we turn a blind eye towards this sort of thing. We are fast becoming the third-world hell hole from which so many are fleeing.
Failure to secure the borders combined with an obsession with cheap labor and its resultant downward pressure on US wages has proven to be a cancer that now rages out of control. What possible argument can you make that we need MORE immigration with unemployment rates exceeding 10%? Calling us racists isn’t an argument and only inflames the situation more.
Mr. Navarrette, you have contributed nothing of positive value to this issue. Why don’t you focus on the blatant racism and the poisonous philiosophy of groups like La Raza?

The root cause of the mess is the American employer. Yes, the restaurants, hotels, delis, landscapers. gardening contractors etc – it all adds up. Heck, my relatives don’t even care about hiring illegal maids to clean their house. Big business and politicians play a very small part in this.
But it always feels better to blame The Other, not one’s own people. And as long as we continue to avoid the true source of the problem, it will be with us.

1. There is no way for employers currently to know if there hiring illegal aliens or not.
2. In order to put in a system that works they need to create a national ID with national DNA database for it to work.

4. The government and many government contractors are the largest hirers of know illegal aliens.
5. Many illegal aliens don’t need to work because of THE INSANE WELFARE BENEFITS THEY GET so preventing them from getting jobs is a bit meaningless.

The last part of the quote above show again the racism of the pro immigration crowd. For the most part they desire a pliant Latino illegal to an “uppity” American worker.
Every job taken by an illegal immigrant is a job that a legal worker could have done. Would that legal American worker want more pay and better conditions? Sure, that is why the illegal is hired instead.
Imagine the effect on our poorest communities if the demand for their one product, labor, was sky high. Imagine gardeners, dishwashers and nannies making a living wage. Imagine welfare mothers able to get dishwasher jobs for $15.00 an hour with benefits, as opposed to staying on the dole.
Americans should get paid twice as much for half the work…… and our government should do it’s job to ensure it.

When an immigrant community collectively undermines our immigration laws, then we should not allow that immigrant community to grow larger through either legal or illegal immigration.
Once we secure the border, once we have ways to prevent illegal immigrants from working here, then we can talk about whom it is in our interest to admit to the United States, how many and what kind of braceros we want to admit and for how long and what to do about the hard cases like the illegal immigrant who was brought here by his parents when he was 1 year old and has nowhere to return.
If Obama’s Latino supporters urged him to enforce the law, then the president would have some motivation to enforce the law rather than actively thwarting its enforcement. We could then start a civil discussion about immigration policy and perhaps avoid the sad situation of Mr. Hernandez.

Gee, Arizona’s enforcement of Federal law, the same law the Feds aren’t enforcing, is a “hateful tantrum?’ Shutting down La Raza-run brown-supremacist hate propaganda in schools masquerading as “ethnic studies” is a tantrum? Expecting teachers to speak basic English correctly and grammatically (not “unaccented, you liar” is a tantrum?
And even as this coulumn appears, we learn that the Secretary of Labor (La Raza spawn Hilda Solis) is running PSAs telling illegals they have a “right to be paid fairly.” No they don’t. Here’s the thing, Ruben: There are poor low-skilled people all over the world who want to come to America. And that’s fine. We’ll take in many of them. But we cannot take in EVERYONE. Obviously. So why should Mexico’s surplus population be allowed to cut in ahead of all the others? It isn’t fair, and we just can’t have that. We are a sovereign nation and we have a right to control our borders just as every other nation does.

I clicked thru on the accents article and it is mostly about getting teachers who are fluent in English to actually teach English (what a shock). Yes, there is part of it about heavy accents, but what is wrong with that?
Having a teacher with a heavy accent is a simple comprehension issue, not some attempt at using the race card. My daughter had an Indian teacher for math whose accent most of the children could not understand. They were learning almost nothing from the teacher as they could NOT understand her. Don’t you want school children to understand their teachers?
Also Mr. Navarrette, you have “Dial Back the Immigration Rhetoric” in your title, yet in your first sentence you write “it’s open season on Latinos”. Seriously, are you that clueless, or do you think that your readers are?
Finally, the jist of your article is about one crime by some (most likely) criminal border agents. If they did what you suggest, I certainly hope they go to jail.
But what does this one incident have to do with not having 10 million illegal immigrants? What does it have to do with enforcing our illegal immigration laws? Seriously, what is your point?

So, what about the near civil war Mexico seems to be in at the moment? What is almost nothing being reported about it? I’ve been hearing bits about light armour showing up at the border, Mexican military helicopters overflying US towns, but nobody seems to be reporting on anything that’s happening in the border area. I doubt if the author believes all the hyperbolic things he says about people trying to enforce the laws of the US as regards the border. He also impugns by implication the reasons most Americans give for wanting the flow of illegals stopped—reasons the author is obviously contemptuous of. His article is one howl of outrage that Americans would want to prevent what would be a tsunami-like flow of people from Mexico to the US if the Border Patrol wasn’t down there. As it is we have a gusher of people that make it across and these people have no intention of assimilating into US culture. Even if a former Mexican president hadn’t said “wherever goes a Mexican there also is Mexico” that is the practical effect of this illegal invasion from Mexico and people are tired of it. These first generation Mexicans trash and tear-up everything they touch. Crime is up wherever they congregate in sufficient numbers and their neighborhoods are nearly always the seediest parts of any city or town. And, as for being good workers: some of them are, but most of them aren’t and are mostly indifferent to the quality of the work they do. Mexicans that come here get a lot more out of the US than we get out of them and the difference is disproportionate enough that their presence here causes palpable harm to the US and this has to be stopped and the only way to do it is stop this gusher of people coming across the border.

I don’t know where all you’ve been, but I’ve seen some mighty fine homes in McAllen Texas where it was only Hispanic neighborhoods. Black people in the Missisippi Delta live way harder than a lot of Hispanic hoods I’ve encountered or driven through. Not just in McAllen TX, either. It really struck me as most peculiar that the people who had suffered quite a bit in this country were living harshly in The South, and these folks were obviously salt of the earth. It’s the same thing on some of the Indian Reservations. Only most reservations are in some really cruel landscapes. When it comes to Mexican hoods, not all are the same. I was accidently in one in Tucson with some really hateful eyes. It seems to me that there is far more talk about racism now, but it is in a way that is causing great chasms between people in our society. There are types of anarchy building up in this country because of idiotcy regarding what is ‘racist’ and what is following up with Homeland Security about fascist and treasonous organizations, and politicians. Mr. Navarette, I have noticed (both here and in my local newspaper, which carries your column weekly) that you seem to have a tendency to take individual examples (Mr. Rojas, for example, or actual racists) and use them to paint a large number of people with a wide brush.

You people need to go home, wait your turn, come here legally, make farmers pay real wages like in the 60s and stop making America’s tax payers pay for your babies you guys have like Roaches every year, don’t lie that your are not the father of your kids so they qualify for welfare, and for once earn what you get. The cheap food the left says you provide is a lie. If you add in the millions of dollars we give you in aid to the money you earn without being taxed, that apple cost us $10 each, the orange is a 20 orange, and the berries are 50 dollar berries. I don’t want you here and hate your the way your kids open cokes, cookies, and toys and even steal them while you are in the store and leave the empty packages right in front of me, and laugh about it because you think the store doesn’t care. It does and we Americans pay for that too because the stores just raise the price so that we will pay for it. We Americans need to send 40 million people to Washington and stop the city, its traffic, and throw the politicians and judges out on the street by the scruff of their necks. I am ready to have a civil war against Mexicans and our own government if this is what it takes to get my country back and hang Old Glory high above America again. Sharia law should be “Outlawed” or if not then the KKK and the Mormon’s churches should be allowed to practice their religions (I don’t really believe this but am trying to make a point here) that for the KKK means treating minorities like animals and hanging blacks for fun, and the Mormons should be able to own blacks as slaves and have as many wives as they want as there old “outlawed?” Book of Mormons used to stay. The buck stops with America’s Citizens that’s what a Republic means: The citizens are the law and the keepers of the nation, they are the LAW, not the Government, we give them the privilege of working for us.
