On June 12—now a full two weeks back—three Israeli teenage boys were kidnapped in Judea (part of the West Bank) on their way home from a religious school there. They were Naftali Frenkel, 16 (a dual Israeli-U.S. citizen), Gilad Shaar (16), and Eyal Ifrach (19). Since then Israeli security forces have conducted a massive manhunt in Judea that has included searching caves, wells, and reservoirs. They have turned up nothing.

We do know what organization was behind the abduction—Hamas, as publicly confirmed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Israel’s internal security agency has just recently announced the identity of the main kidnappers, two hard-core Hamas members from the West Bank town of Hebron. But there has been no word from Hamas about a possible prisoner swap involving the three boys, even though, two and a half years ago, Israel swapped 1027 Palestinian security prisoners for Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier who had also been kidnapped by Hamas and was held in Gaza for five years. That silence increases the concern that the boys have been killed—or smuggled to a different country, which the Israeli authorities consider unlikely but do not rule out.

Meanwhile Israel has been cracking down on Hamas, arresting hundreds of its members, seizing weapons and ammunition, and raiding its media outlets and funding operations. Israel has also been trying to get the international community interested in this unfolding story, but with less success.

We expect the unrealistic, as usual. We play the role of Charlie Brown vs. Lucy and her place-holding football stunt over and over. And each time we act surprised at the outcome. The 'world' in general does not care about the fate of six or seven million Jews in Israel. Even in the US, where pro-Israel attitudes are widespread, there is no effective public pressure on Obama vis-a-vis his ME policies. Why do we keep expecting the impossible?

Mr Hornik, your description of Israel' s reaction towards Hamas and the kidnappin is subdued and naive. Subdued because you write Israel has cracked down when it fact the IDF has merely arrested a few dozens of well known activists that will be released soon; This is a very weak and feeble reaction towards a major violation of the unwritten rules of war : Do not attack on purpose children or adolescent. The only way to react is to cancel by targeted elimination one hamas leader after another and I mean from their top political network. The big heads of hamas inflated with hate speech must roll down on a daily rate. Then you will see the 3 teens getting freed alive quickly.

SOMETIMES - - - - - Ya gotta fight fire with Fire.

As a non-Hebrew speaking Christian, I am still very concerned about this outrage, and wish to be more prayerful about it. For my use, can you provide a better translation than Google's? "Brothers Brothers and all of Israel, in trouble and in captivity, at the sea and the land, may God have mercy on them, and Iotziam regrets spirit, and darkness light, and from servitude Gala This year shortly and time sacrificed." Thank you!

"... even when it entails inversion of the truth." -- I think you must mean "... especially when it entails inversion of the truth."

They know who the kidnappers are? Its a no-brainer then. The IDF should immediately kidnap a few members of Hamas's
families. Return the boys unharmed or start receiving packages of body parts like fingers, toes, ears...etc. And carry out the threat.

That would do nothing. They would just be celebrated as martyrs.

Besides, that's not how Isreal does things.

I'm well aware that's not the way Israel does things. That's the problem . High time Israel instills serious fear into the hearts and minds of her enemies. Watch how fast the dynamic would change. This is a street fight writ large, start acting like it. And tell the rest of the world to go to hell at the same time.

You are right, Gerri. As a traumatized people, though, we continue to try to be 'more Christian than the Christians' while fighting savages.

By the same token, there has been little concern with Israel's actions against Hamas in the West Bank. I don't think anyone, except the arab nations and other usual suspects, have complained about Israel's search for the boys in the west bank and arrests of Hamas operatives in the west bank. A couple attempts by the Arab nations and Iran to condemn Israel in the security council for its "aggression" in the west bank have failed.
