2010: Dawn of the Terran Empire?

Like Kirk and Spock, I fear we may have passed through to a parallel (political) universe.

Congressional Democrats who voted against “universal health care” are trumpeting that fact in their re-election campaigns, whereas those who voted for it are nervously changing the subject?

The NAACP praises Klansmen, while attacking African-American grassroots activists for standing up for their rights?

Liberals who cut their teeth during the Vietnam War and civil rights protests of the 1960s call for restoring the military draft?

A first lady who can’t get her husband to stop smoking wants to give us healthy diet and lifestyle advice?

The New York Times advocates restricting the constitutional rights of American citizens who have committed no crimes?

A top Republican congressman touted as a defender of capitalism tells the Wall Street Journal that one of the legitimate functions of government is “securing some minimum standard of living“?

On the other hand, I do like the fact that bacon is now a health food.

I can no longer tell up from down.

I hope I wake up soon back in the normal universe. But if I don’t, then at least maybe Michelle Obama can persuade her husband to grow a cool goatee.

The only explanation is that Leftism is a form of mental illness, ”progressives” should be called ”regressives” …..

    • tim maguire

“Progressive” is an example of liberal double-speak. They haven’t had a new idea in almost half a century and they resist most change. Roger Simon’s been saying for years that progressives are the new reactionaries and he’s right.

      • Gary from Jersey

I’ve said the same thing for quite a while now. No one is more intellectually turgid, close-minded and angry at the threat of change than so-called progressives. They can’t recognize the damage they’re doing to their country and themselves much less form a plan to fix it. Liberalism truly is mental illness, and a dangerous one at that.

      • Steve Skubinna

The term “progressive” was consciously adopted by Communists in the West during the 1930′s. They were aware that styling themselves as “Communists” might be a hard sell, and after all, who could argue with a progressive? All the cool kids were doing it.

Of course, not all of today’s “progressives” are Communists. Some are mere socialists, others fascists, many are greens. What they all have in common, however, is that they are statists.

Hmmm. . . . advancement by assassination? I may have to run for dogcatcher, or mayor, . . . . or something.

  3. And you forgot that America can spend itself to prosperity, that you can give health insurance to the entire country and the costs will actually go down, and that if you’re just nice to the Iranians they’ll give up their nuclear program. Also, you can win a war by setting a date certain for withdrawal, you actually think the United Nations should rule the world, and that the Federal Government is capable of reacting quickly to a national disaster, like the Gulf oil spill.

Welcome to Obamaland. It’s a strange planet straight from the mind of George Orwell.

November. Make it stop in November.

  4. 4. Lazarus Long

Terry, the correct term is “reactionary leftist”, and that’s the only way I refer to them.

  5. 5. Dana H.

Nice article. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

But we still have the vote. So next month, let’s throw the Democratic b*stards out. Then after that, we can work on straightening out (or if needed, throwing out) the Republican welfare statists.

  6. 6. Ken Finney

    It’s Topsy-Turvy World!

  7. 7. Ruebacca

Can Obama grow a beard? I am sure the white house press corp would give this story full coverage.

    • Mary in LA

I doubt he could muster up enough testosterone to grow more than a weedy little chin-muff. :-P

    • Mary in LA

That said, if he does grow a beard, watch out. There is a certain sociopolitical philosophy, some 1500 years old, that requires its male adherents to grow facial hair.

I denounce myself and will report to the nearest re-education facility immediately.

  8. 8. looking closely

    “Bizarro world” indeed.

  9. 9. Seerak

Like I always say: Left fist, Right fist, same mugger.

Genuine Americanism stands opposed the mugger, not just one of his fists.

Russia is not only advocating returning currencies to gold standard, they and china and several other nations are doing just that.

While the USA continues to spend itself into oblivion, China is setting aside copper, Nickel, gold and silver reserves to back its Dollar. The long term goal is obvious; the Chinese Dollar is being set up to challenge the US dollar for world trade settlement systems.
If the US cannot control itself and other nations continue seeing a managed general destruction of the US economy, there is no choice but to switch settlements to the Chinese Yuan, or a basket of Yuan, Ruble, Pound and Euro currencies.

America Fiddles (ideological battles that have absolutely no meaning), while Rome Burns ( Fed managed destruction of the US Dollar).

  11. 11. Warren Bonesteel

Don’t forget, the party of smaller government is not supporting the populist Republican candidates who’ve been elected on a small government platform.

IOW, Republican and/or Democrat, the sociopaths are now in charge of the asylum.

I hate to think of the populist reaction when the Republicans take over…and nothing changes in Washington.

otoh, if the Republicans do begin to implement the platform the populists are calling for, what do you think the left will do?

    Catch-22. Irresolvable dilemma.

Whatever part of government and government spending are rightfully slashed, millions of people will scream bloody murder. …and the politicians won’t cut your taxes, either.

From that last link: “Ever see that old Woody Allen movie Sleeper?

Ever see? Heck I saw it in it’s original run in the theater. Good news about bacon, now if you’ll excuse me, the damn kids are on the lawn again.

  13. 13. Greg Tobkes

One difference with your analogy to the Star Trek episode #39 (Mirror,Mirror)is that it was far more logical!!!

  14. 14. Ladysithe

All I see are spoilt brat aristacrats whining big goverment cause they can’t do as they please.corp.included in that group.you want to cut spending? Stop starting “vietnams” war is expensive. Funny if you support fat cats you are a patriot support the little guy you are communist.great thinking.just like these prolifers, they care about the unborn but the elderly can drop dead.or those who cannot afford co-pays on ins can.die. Prolife is all life. The prblem is greed and selfishness.we need to all work together if we are going to solve anything. PS we don’t need gun toting rednecks like Bush. Back in office. They caused the mess in the 1st place do you realy those stoneagers back?

    • dee

It looks like it’s past time for Ladyboy to step away from the keyboard, and take their lithium tablets…

    • Akatsukami

Although I’ve got to give you progressives credit for one thing: you’ve got some really wicked drugs!

    • Sigh. Here’s another dog who has wandered into a museum, piddling on the floor and barking at things that they have no hope of ever understanding.

Bad dog. Bad, bad dog. Do your owners know where you are?

    • Ken

      Ladysithe..you’re an idiot…

    • Michael Lonie

      Sithe,
Obama’s “Stimulus Bill,” that stimulated nothing, cost more than the whole Iraq Campaign. I won’t go into the strategic arguments for that campaign, I doubt you would understand them. I will say only that the Bush Administration had good reasons, and showed foresight, in waging that campaign within the larger war against the jihadists. Um, you do remember the jihadist terrorists, don’t you? WTC, twin towers, and all that? The US did not start this war, and one does not avoid a war by not fighting it. All that not fighting it means is that you lose. Got your burkha picked out, your male owner identified? That is what bin Laden and his merry men want to force all women into. There are good reasons for fighting against the Jihadists, even if dim-bulb, reactionary leftists don’t understand them.

Liberalism/Progressivism or any other kind of socialism do not help the little guy. They actually make it harder for him. The situation is actually even more pernicious than it appears at first. Once people are accustomed to the government handing out to them and become dependent on the government continuing handouts, they will be totally bereft when the collapse of government’s ability to continue the handouts arrives. And that day will inevitably arrive. As Thatcher said, eventually the socialists run out of other peoples’ money, then the whole scam collapses. Our current economic problems were the result of such a scam, the push to get more and more people to “own” houses through mortgages they could never pay for. So much money was diverted into that, at government insistance, to pay for such shaky deals, that the whole world financial system was thrown into danger by it. If we had been practicing laissez faire capitalism we would never have got into that trouble.

Greed and selfishness are human traits, not limited to capitalists or Republicans. History shows that greed for power results in much worse problems than the relatively innocent greed for money. Bill Gates established no Gulags or Auschwitzes. Such things come from the collectivisty, totalitarian mindset of people like yourself.

It’s funny to see you denouncing Bush. Quite apart from his “compassionate conservatism” being liberalism lite, you denounce him for being out of date while Obama is giving us the new ideas of the liberals, which date back to Otto von Bismarck, originator of the welfare state.

Too bad we can’t run Calvin Coolidge in 2012. He’d be the perfect President to get us out of the hole we are in.

  15. Sadly, I’ve had that feeling since the violence-filled “Summer of Love” in 1967.

    Well said, Paul.

  16. 16. lil mike

Sorry, but I’m way ahead of you. I figured out last Spring we were being invaded by the Mirror Universe.

  17. 17. Amlan Gupta

Great article Paul. There was a fundamental error that the writers of the Mirror Mirror episode made and that is repeated in various forms by all the progressives (what an ugly irony): that a command and control society can be as productive or technologically advanced as a free society. They did get one thing correct, such a society will inevitably be one in which violence, force and fear are the primary forms of interaction between individuals.

We have many, many examples of this in recent history and currently around the world. Unfortunately, those countries (primarily the US) that, however inconsistently, stood for freedom appear to be on an inexorable path away from in. Many on this blog see the November elections as the correction and I hope that they are correct, but I certainly did not find anything reassuring in the Republican “contract”. I sincerely hope I’m wrong and that there are enough Americans left with that unique American sense of life to save us.

For a minute I thought this had something to do with Gliese 581 g. I nominate Liechtenstein’s Prince Hans-Adam II as Terra’s first emperor. How can anyone with a name which could have come straight out of a Dune novel not work out as our alpha+++ male leader?

  19. 19. MarkV

It’s great to hear that China and Russia are moving toward gold and silver backed currency. When the paper dollar finally collapses into wortlessness there will still be some national economies that will survive to pull the rest of the world back from the monetary dark age. I just hope there is some gold left in Fort Knox so we Americans can use our own new gold backed dollar instead of having to use imported foreign currency.

  20. 20. Skwerl

Two great things are happening in this article: bacon is a tasty healthy treat, and once again Star Trek explains the current events. Have I died and gone to Sto-vo-kor?

  21. 21. Filthy Screw

Khan Noonien Singh where are you when we need you?
