Israel: An Introduction

This comprehensive book provides a well-rounded introduction to Israel—a definitive account of the nation's past, its often controversial present, and much more. Edited by a leading historian of the Middle East, Israel is organized around six major themes: land and people, history, society, politics, economics, and culture. The book is a significant contribution to Israel publications, being one of the first books to ever fluidly consolidate and describe Israel as a modern State. Finally, Israel provides readers with a solid foundation of knowledge about the Jewish State and provides useful reference lists by topic for those inspired to read further.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) has refused to condemn an attack on Israel from Egypt by an al-Qaida affiliate group that killed eight Israelis. The PA is also going to the UN to get support for a unilateral declaration of independence that violates every agreement it reached with Israel since 1993. The PA leader, Mahmoud Abbas, has said that even if Palestinians get an independent state they will continue to demand that millions of Palestinian Arabs must be allowed to go live in Israel so they can turn that country into a Muslim Arab state.

Oh, and even when the PA declares that it is a Muslim Arab state (as it says in the PA Constitution) that it will refuse to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. And on September 20, the PA is organizing massive anti-Israel demonstrations that will probably lead to violence. Did I mention that the PA is currently in partnership with Hamas—even though that partnership isn’t working out so well—which regularly attacks Israel with rockets and mortars, as well as declaring that it’s going to kill all the Jews?

But, wait! The PA needs money! So what does it do?

Why, of course it goes to Israel and asks for money! Specifically, it requested that Israel move up the turnover of the $105 million in tax revenues Israel has collected on imports. Not just pay the money, mind you, but pay it sooner than required! The PA took out a short-term bank loan on the assumption that this would happen since Israeli civil servants in the finance and defense ministries recommended it be done. Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said, “No.”

The nerve! Now, according to previous agreements that Israel and the PA have made, Israel is supposed to give the money to the PA. But it is under no obligation to give the money ahead of schedule. Moreover, the PA is denouncing these same agreements which require, for example, that the PA stop incitement to murder Israelis; arrest those planning to commit terror attacks or who have done so; and negotiate in good faith toward a compromise peace.

The PA wanted to pay salaries for its personnel (including those in prison for murdering Israelis and for those living in the Gaza Strip, whose payment would pump money into the Hamas-ruled statelet that is attacking Israel on a regular basis).

And one might ask what has happened to the billions of dollars in international aid, a higher per capita payment than any other political entity has received in the history of the planet earth?

Let me dramatize the situation for you:

Hi! I know I’m in partnership with a group at war with you; am inciting my people and teaching my children to murder you, am refusing to negotiate with you, have stolen most of the money I’ve received in foreign aid, which is why I’m broke, am rejecting and breaking the agreements on which your obligation to pay me rest; am going to the UN to get international support for breaking the previous agreements I’ve made with you; am lying about you every day (a PA minister has just accused Israel of stealing organs); am seeking an outcome in which I can then wipe you off the map; and using the money you would be giving me to pay people who have murdered your citizens….

BUT can you move up your payment of money to me as a favor?

This is the absurdity of the Israel-Palestinian issue, whose reality is never reflected in the Western mass media.

The reason the Islamic front line Fatah Army have asked for the funds early is because the spineless Israeli leadership are always accommodating to them, always, always rewarding them for their treachery without fail.
It’s Israel’s sacrifice of sanity and innocent blood to their false god of no peace in Washington which Israel’s idol worshipers orbit around.

One phone call from Washington is all it takes for Israel to retreat and send the funds early.
That’s what happened last time when the fearful coward Netanyahu held the funds back.
Whats the difference, the Idiots in Jerusalem have been rewarding the FATAH terrorist enclave in Judea and Samaria and always punishing fellow Jews there to please their pimps of no peace in Washington since Israel’s nuts at the helm signed onto the counterfeit peace Road Map agenda.
When Jewish leaders are this stupid it’s not chutzpah ,it’s called milking the cow or in Israel’s case. The sign on her back reads “KICK ME’ and the Palestinians are just obliging.

And Israel will probably pay it.

It is not enough to say no, it has be said as HELL NO. FULL STOP, NO!

Give us peace or we give you war kind of no. End the incitement immediately and admit that defeat or be defeated.

The mistake is treating the Palestinian leadership with any respect, the second they passed out checks to the families of convicted mass-murderers, Israel should have drawn up terror indictments for the entire PA government.

Give them 30 days to fix their textbooks. The war of lies and “narratives” must end for the war to end otherwise, it is just low intensity war by another name.

    • The sad truth is that even after Israel was rewarded with rockets after driving fellow Jews from Gaza to please their Peace Pimp Bush they are still too stupid to pull the plug.
Israel has proven to be a nation of wimps and suckers for ‘fools gold peace’.
They just love playing the cheap whore and pleasing their Pimps in Washington too much to stop now.

So they spent all of their money and want an advance. Too bad. Oh they will get it when it is due that was the agreement after all.

Israel should deduct the millions spent preparing for the September hate fest.

I would make a counter proposal. Rather than giving you the money early we would like to borrow it to pay for the Iron Domes we are rushing to deploy to defend ourselves against your missiles. If that is not acceptable we have devised a cheaper defense. We have rockets too. For every one you launch we will launch one at random into one of your population centers until you stop.

The Palestinians want Israel to subsidize their own intransigence, extremism and glorification of terrorism. Fortunately, if they press ahead with their bid and Israel revokes the Oslo Accords and stops funding and cooperation with the PA, this double game they have successfully playing for twenty years will be over and they will have to pay a real price for their childish antics. The Palestinians will have to grow up and learn how to support themselves. Never having built an independent economy in the last twenty years, that is going to be a tall order for them. And as the old saying has it, “be careful what you wish for; you just might get it.”

‘this double game they have successfully playing for twenty years will be over’

Israel hasn’t had the spine or the sense to end the farce in 18 years and you think that will change ?
Who is going to stand up in Israel, Ehud knee pads Barak,Benji the slick talking empty suit ?

These idol worshipers will keep crawling to their god in Washington and will keep doing what they are told.
Secular rule in Israel has failed miserably.
The only game these moral and spiritual midgets know is kissing their masters rear end, they just can’t ever say no.

Well despite the bravado, Israel’s strategic situation isn’t rosy. I would be more clever than leaving it to a “war kind of no”. Right now Israel is facing six fronts: Syria, Lebanon, West Bank, Gaza, Sinai and the latest, the Red Sea.

One always offers peace and negotiations as they prepare for war. The sharper the knife the bolder the offers. Diplomacy now involves delicate balancing and mastery of the narrative, but deterrence is a different matter and I would think that Iranian sub is better off at the bottom of the sea.

I’m not sure Bibi has a plan or that his reliance on Obama is the best option. The situation now requires the US and Israel thinking outside the box and anticipating the enemy. I see little pressure by the Israelis other than more settlements and acting surprised when violence strikes. The Brand was the Strong Horse variety. Chaos can only make oil and gas extraction more difficult. David’s sling shot won’t pierce Fordo. Iron Dome loses in a game of attrition without consequence. As for the US, I can see the utility for Obama in something wagging its tail, but then he is usually forced into action. He thinks the stakes are different.

In reality, this is chess to the death…

the reason this is not news is that it has become the accepted norm and the default position of the radical arabs whose continual baying for the end of israel and death to jews and america is falling on the well conditioned immune and indifferent ears of the west and anyone with a grain of intelligence.
the west is becoming islamized and fears incurring the wrath of its growing muslim populations – it is as if they are living in a shrinking fools paradise and refuse to accept the blatant and obvious facts confronting them.
their very way of life and culture is being threatened with demise yet they have the gall to criticize israel for daring to defend itself. unfortunately there has been an effect on israel in that israel now fears so called law fare and stymies its own armed forces in dealing fully and completely with the terrorism it faces on a daily basis.
when the idf had the chances it had to eradicate forever the scourge of hamas and others they pulled back or held back thinking it would benefit them on the world stage. but it did not. it only appears as weakness to the arab radicals and
fuels their fires of hatred even more.
when norway suffered the ghastly attack on its children a while ago one can only hope that their understanding of what israel has faced for decades and which the smug self righteous norwegians refuse to acknowledge is that killing children be they israeli somali or norwegian is wrong, and maybe they should be supporting israel instead of condemning them at every turn. europe definitely has a marked throwback to nazi ideology whic fuels the hatred of jews everywhere.
