This Is What Democracy Looks Like?: Hating America and Rejecting Peace with Israel Portrayed as Virtuous
It’s fascinating to see not only the Middle East going backward but Western analysts and officials cheering on a return to even more war and terrorism. A good example is “In Tumult, New Hope for Palestinian Cause” by Anthony Shadid and David D. Kirkpatrick in the New York Times.
Let’s take one paragraph and see what it tells us:
In all the tumult of the Arab revolts, one of the most striking manifestations of change is a rejuvenated embrace of the Palestinian cause. The burst in activism in Egypt, Lebanon and even Tunisia has offered a rebuttal to an old bromide of Arab politics, that authoritarian leaders cynically inflamed sentiments over Israel and Palestine to divert attention from their own shortcomings. But the embrace of the issue also helped confirm its status as a barometer of justice and freedom for many Arabs and Muslims. And now, the demands of an empowered public raise the possibility of a significant change in the region’s foreign policies which, at least tacitly, capitulated to the dictates of the United States and Israel.
By the way, all of this also applies to anti-Americanism. Now let’s take it one piece at a time:
In all the tumult of the Arab revolts, one of the most striking manifestations of change is a rejuvenated embrace of the Palestinian cause.
Wasn’t it a few weeks ago that the alleged lack of obsession with the Arab-Israeli conflict was a sign of progress toward moderation and democracy? Now we are told the exact opposite! And nobody in the mass media even notes that this is a contradiction!
The burst in activism in Egypt, Lebanon and even Tunisia has offered a rebuttal to an old bromide of Arab politics, that authoritarian leaders cynically inflamed sentiments over Israel and Palestine to divert attention from their own shortcomings.
I love this one! First, it isn’t “an old bromide” at all since, while people like me have written about this, it has not penetrated the mainstream, which has continually insisted that the inflaming was a reflection of real public sentiments. Of course, we know these are real hatreds or they wouldn’t be so easily inflamed.
What’s happening now, of course, is that the oppositions — including and even mainly so Islamists — are cynically inflaming sentiments in order to discredit the old regimes and mobilize support for themselves.
But the embrace of the issue also helped confirm its status as a barometer of justice and freedom for many Arabs and Muslims.
In fact, the embrace of this issue shows that people can still be bought off by inflaming nationalist and religious sentiments rather than providing more freedom or better living standards. It’s the road to dictatorship, violence, and demagoguery. Who says only the old “authoritarian leaders” could play this game? The new authoritarian leaders will also do so.
When presidential frontrunner Amr Moussa visited a village, Reuters reported one villager saying:
“We don’t even have proper drinking water. Over there they are drinking mineral water from bottles because we don’t have sweet water….” Villagers pointed to the broken roads and the lack of sewerage. They described the local school where there are 65 children to a class.”
Providing teachers, schoolrooms, roads, and water pipes is expensive; providing xenophobic demagoguery is cheap. There’s no money but there is a lot of guns and hatred. So channeling it against Israel and America is a good thing? Is that going to help the people?
And now, the demands of an empowered public raise the possibility of a significant change in the region’s foreign policies which, at least tacitly, capitulated to the dictates of the United States and Israel.
It is amazing how Western reporters accept radical Arab nationalism and Islamism as the proper behavior. Did, for example, President Hosni Mubarak “capitulate” to “dictates”? Note that these reporters aren’t saying this is the claim of others. Rather they are agreeing to this claim. Mubarak, then, according to the New York Times correspondents, was indeed a running dog lackey of Western imperialism and Zionism.

This is the same class that told us three decades ago we had nothing to fear from an Islamist revolutionary takeover of Iran. Which turned out to be a disaster for the region. They have forgotten everything and learned nothing new since then.
Well spoken. It is time that these journalists read more that just those echoing their views and learnt to evaluate sources properly just as each good historian has learnt in History 101.
They are liberals. They don’t learn from their mistakes, take responsibility for their actions, or think for themselves. Empty well intentioned souls guided by the media.
BS. They are America-hating marxists. They should be removed from out nation and that goes with the rest of the left. I am sick and tired of giving the left all manner of excuses for their behavior and what they say about America.
Let’s not kid around: There will be a second American Revolution. The left and real Americans cannot live together going forward.
What Blotto said.
Well intentioned my rump roast.
They are evil and/or mentally ill.
Either way they must be stopped.
Number one the MSM is liberal by their own admission.
Add on political correctness and it’s no suprise at all
We have a man made disaster at Ft Hood and terrorists in the Tea Party.
When John Kerry can look in the camera and tell the Press not to give coverage to a political party because he doesn’t agree with their viewpoint, it’s blatant censorship. The New York Times and Pravda have the same credibility in my opinion. Al Sharpton on tv and that’s supposed to add credability to any news organization ? Can you say Tawana Braley ? Have you seen the FBI footage of Al offering to launder drug moey for a prize fight ?
Yea; we should trust them
Any doubt as to where President Bush’s personal dream and vision of a Palestinian state always led ?
The problem with the right is that they played the same game the left does with their demi-god Obummer.
They let Bush get away with it.
Now the big question is why does Israel keep on this road to national suicide.
They just can’t seem to say no to their Plantation Master in Washington for some perverse reason.
Israel needs to give peace a chance.
Withdraw from any and all no settled land asap…..
Tell the arab world, they have their land, air, water access…
The start the count down to war…
at that point?
Drive the entire arab population of the “west bank” into Jordan…
Drive the entire population of gaza to the sinai…
eat lunch…
Start with cluster bombing the southern borders of lebanon, western borders of syria
have tea…
take out every major electric grid in the arab world. destroy anwar. nuke the black rock of mecca
hit iran with 17 nukes at their major id’d sites
eat some hummus….
continue bombing runs in all areas drive all the populations to the extreme borders of the sinai the northern area of lebanon, and level damascus…
have some cake….
send out a press release that if the violence doesnt stop, tomorrow phase 2 will be enacted
In case I was not clear…
israel MUST not shoot the 1st shot…
I second the motion.
Suuure, then what? Where will the survivors then go? …and there will be survivors. Don’t forget that Islam, the Umma ie:wannabe Caliphate, will also survive and what will Islam do then? When Islam strikes back, don’t forget Pakistan has nukes, will they strike out at India? If that happens, what will China and Russia do? Any survivors of Islam in the Middle East will have to go somewhere, Africa where Islam is already a problem for many? More refugees to Europe, which is already 8 to 15 percent Islamic? While Israel is more than capable of doing as you say, I’m sure that the consequences of such actions have held their hand more than once or twice. Your should think through the consequences of such an act since actions do have consequences, most often, unexpected ones.

Look, journalism is the degree you get when you fail at basketweaving. Why anyone listens to the mainstream talking heads is a mystery to me. Never do you hear the MSM talk about the bloody history of the muslims, but you will hear them scream when the muslims are cutting their heads off with dull knives.
Reacting to the NYT is acknowledging its power. When will we get to the point that we can ignore it?
Barry over the last year insiders have been dumping shares of the NYT Company like rats deserting a sinking ship.

Even the owners know its days are numbered. It is good only for wrapping fish.

Naa. Make the fish stink.
The left’s romance with Arab culture is the same fascination Lawrence had with Arabia…. closet homosexuality. Note, I have no quarrel with consenting adult homosexuals, but the journalista left should come out of the closet and admit they are drooling over what is under those robes.
Actually, their romance is with destruction. Israel’s, ours, all of civilization’s. They dream of a world cleansed of things they do not control, and do not understand. And they believe that in the Brave New World that (they think) will result from the apocalypse they lust after, they will be gods.
They just don’t want to get their hands bloody with the actual business of erasing everybody else from the face of the Earth, anymore than their cronies in the deep-eco crowd do. This is why they so love the Islamists; they see them as yet another group which hates our civilization as much as they do, and as such is yet another they can suck up to, and exploit, in their quest for cataclysm.
They think the Islamists are violent, stupid, “useful idiots”, as Lenin would say. And that after the Triumph, those stupid peasants with beards, robes and Kalashnikovs will suddenly realize that they aren’t smart enough to run things, and will fall on their knees and beg the “enlightened ones” to rule over them.
The journalistas will be so surprised when they are bent over for the headsman, almost before anyone else. But you can’t reason with mystics; that’s one way that you can tell that they are mystics.

The UK is our main ally and will continue to be for the foreseeable future
Recent events in the UK bring the US/UK even closer

Also in addition to my post awaiting approval, I noticed the following at the NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/11/science/earth/11meter.html The writer seems sympathetic to the taxing of the miles private citizens drive their cars. Given the climate here and in Europe, the NYT can’t help itself. We are after all, just lab rats….
If the NYT actually reported the news in its entirety they would have reported this important development: hxxp://www.jpost.com/MiddleEast/Article.aspx?id=233215
http://www.familysecuritymatters.org/publications/id.10137,css.print/pub_detail.asp Not my favorite website, but an interesting article never the less. Victor, I hope Barry posts my comments. I’m sure you’ll love it….
The New York Times may no longer be capable of shocking, but this is perhaps the closest that that newspaper has gotten to actually celebrating Arab antisemitism and the Arabs’ continuing hope to eliminate the Jewish state. That’s what that sly code phrase, “the Palestinian cause,” means. Anyone who speaks approvingly of “the Palestinian cause,” as does the New York Times, is either a malevolent racist or a fool who ought to keep his goddam mouth shut.
Not at all a surprise when the Arabs have been indoctrinating their kids as young as 3 or 4 years old, how bad Israel is, how bad Americans are, and how bad the West are towards Islam.
All you get is a generation hate born Arabs inflammed further by the teaching of the no good koran.
Islam teaches hate !!
Hatred and demonization of Jews by Muslims is as old as the Koran. Mohammed says the trees and rocks will call attention to Jews hiding behind them so Muslims can kill the Jew. Nothing new under the Arab sun.
There once was a reasonable deal struck by Arafat and Rabin and Clinton. Arafat reneged, and here we are. The Israelis aren’t saints, but it is impossible to negotiate with a group which has no intention of honoring an agreement.
Consider the source of most of Israel’s problems.
During the first Lebanon War in 1982 then General Ariel Sharon had Yasser Arafat surrounded and a bulls eye shot to the brain.
President Ronnie Reagan put a halt to Israel fixing another problem and had him safely shipped off to Tunisia.
The we had the Bush 1, James Baker team at Israel’s throat four years straight.
Spring forward a few years later and Israel invites Arafat and the PLO into Israel to begin the Oslo jihad peace agenda of the West against Israel under the leadership of Clinton then Bush and now Obama.
Today Washington is telling the Jews they can’t build homes in their Capitol Jerusalem.
Can anyone see the evil coming out of America and what we as a nation will reap in return ?
Republicans are just as filthy as Democrats when it comes to Israel as they both have an Islamic terrorist state in the heart of Israel in their party platforms.
Why would they negotiate peace?
The U.S. gov pays muslims to continue fighting and gives them weapons.Bomb us ? We’ll pay you $1 B,teach your kids to hate us,we’ll pay more.Need money to support terrorists families? Np!
Israel asks for support to create safe borders, how dare those greedy Jews! Back to 1967 for you.
Peace would not be beneficial for the MSM who might have to cover more boring stuff like government fraud, waste, gunwalker, terrorists here, school failures……….. pity parties and kill the Jews sells much better.
Shades of the German “Dolchstoßlegende.” The NY Times showing its true colors by doing the work of the the reactionary and völkisch post WWI German press. “Stabbed in the back by international Jewry…”
Barry Rubin is on target, asking with some astonishment the question, “This is what democracy looks like?”
It’s time to face the sordid fact that Jeremiah Wright’s (and Obama’s) hate for America and Israel is a mindset more widespread here in the US than we could have imagined.
