Israel: An Introduction

This comprehensive book provides a well-rounded introduction to Israel—a definitive account of the nation's past, its often controversial present, and much more. Edited by a leading historian of the Middle East, Israel is organized around six major themes: land and people, history, society, politics, economics, and culture. The book is a significant contribution to Israel publications, being one of the first books to ever fluidly consolidate and describe Israel as a modern State. Finally, Israel provides readers with a solid foundation of knowledge about the Jewish State and provides useful reference lists by topic for those inspired to read further.

Here’s the sentence:

The changes in the region are producing more extremism, not more moderation.

That applies to attitudes toward America and Israel as well as on internal social issues.

Rachi Ghanouchi, head of Tunisia’s Islamist movement–a man long portrayed as a moderate in the West–just publicly came out and called for Israel’s destruction. And what does Voice of America tell us and the Arabs? That Ghanouchi is a moderate who doesn’t want an Islamist state! Your tax dollars at work. What does CBS News tell us? That the Islamist party denounced the killing of a priest. Obviously very tolerant people.

Of course, the Tunisian Islamists are far weaker than those in Egypt. Still, the West is deluding itself in thinking they are moderate.

Yet let’s listen–thanks to MEMRI–at what the VOA and CBS producers counterpart in the Arab world is saying. In an article written for a Qatari and a Jordanian newspaper, entitled “Israel Is Surely Temporary,” Samir al-Hijjawi says

In this uncertain world I think the only certainty is that United States President, otherwise known to his acolytes as the Sun That Eclipses the Sun, Barack Hussein Obama, doesn’t understand much of anything about anything.

  2. 2. Carl Sesar

I can no more shake off the conviction that Obama does understand that the changes in the Middle East are producing more extremism, not moderation, than Prof. Rubin can shake off the conviction that he doesn’t understand it. And for me, the fact that Obama has 100 percent understanding — just as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton does, and almost all Western newspapers and television news operation do also — while Prof Rubin, and others, are convinced that he and they do not, is what makes the situation worse for the U.S. and Israel, and the world, too.

It’s clear to me. GOP wastes lots of time saying El Duche does not intend to destroy America and Israel. It’s just a coincidence that all of his actions undermine our economy and security. Then they call him ‘naive’ while he smashes his next target. The GOP idiots whine that El Duche would never pass Obamacare when 70% of country against it or they wouldn’t pass repeal of DADT during lame duck session. They are always SHOCKED that he keeps moving forward with his agenda. Thankfully the tea parties have slowed him down.

Read it carefully. It’s very good.

        My interpretation:

“Obama, H. Clinton and the rest of Foggy Bottom, the newspapers and the TV news all know Obama is pushing the Middle East into greater extremism.

Others, like Prof. Rubin, see the extremism growing but cannot believe Obama would do this on purpose.

Those two factors make the problem for America, Israel and the world even worse.”

Interpretation II: “Put your head in the sand about what Obama is doing at your own peril.”

      • fdcol63

Indeed. Obama is not “clueless”. He’s fully aware of what he’s doing, and his progress is facilitated by those who willfully wear blinders.

the obama doctrine: rise of muslim brotherhood, fall of US

folks you have no clue how bad this is -

    • richard40

What exactly are you saying? That Obamas policies promoting muslim extremism, destroying Israel, and undermining America, are not just because Obama is incompetent and misguided, but because he and his crew actually WANT to destroy Israel and America? In other words, are you saying that Obama is not just incompetant and foolish, but is actually a traitor? Pretty strong charges, and I would not rule them out, although I tend to look for incompetance and foolishnes first, before calling somebody a traitor.

One problem with that theory though, why did he show a moment of competance in killing Bin Laden. was it just to throw everybody off with one success, so he would be free to impliment the rest of his anti american and anto israel master plan? Or perhaps, the CIA and military was still loyal, and he could not stop the Bin Laden plan without exposing himself as a traitor?

In any event, I completely agree that Obamas policies (other than killing Bin Laden) actually DO promote muslim extremism, with appeasement, and undermine both America and Israel. Whether his motives are foolish idealism, or hatred of America and Israel, dont really matter, since either result in the same disastrous end.

no obamas plan is to marginalize and beat al queda then he claims 1. he won and 2. all clear. that allows unmolested rise of MB. the obama doctrine.

I honestly believe that if this man continues in office for another five and a half years, we will be in a world war before it’s over, whether it’s because he’s an inept bungler, or an outright evildoer. There’s really no difference.

  3. 3. pearl cohen

It makes me physically ill to read about the inept man who is now in the White House. I do believe that he is a Muslim, just waiting to head the World.

    • 35whelen

What do you think will happen to him, in the event he becomes a “world leader”? I don’t think he will get far, no matter who is securing him, BHO has upset so many groups of people globally I think he might actually get to see what OBL felt as target number one. Just saying.

Obama knows, and fully understands the Muslim Brotherhood Creed; he also is aware of the Hamas Charter that calls for the total destruction of Israel. For Obama to pretend otherwise, is nothing more than pious-posturing to the unaware.

Mr. Rubin, re: “The changes in the region are producing more extremism, not more moderation.” Mr. Obama, a de facto if not de jure Muslim, understands the changes happening in the Middle East all too well. In fact, he couldn’t be more pleased with them. If there is a failure in perception here, it lies with those who are doing mental contortions to try and escape the obvious fact that Obama’s allegiances lie with our Islamic enemies, and not with us. The Usurper in Chief isn’t troubled by such difficulties; whether you love him or hate him (this writer the latter), it is clear that he is a man who knows where he wants to go. The trouble is, he is dragging this nation with him.

  8. 8. AmericanEagle

Hey, Barry, why isn’t the Hamas Charter front and center in the debate about the conflict in the middle-east? It explains what is going on in the words of Hamas – and should kill any notion that any serious talks or negotiations can be had.

The only thing necessary for evil to flourish is for good men to stand by and do nothing.

The obvious intentions of this White House? QED.

  10. 10. Ivan Lenin

I think Obama – or whoever advises him on foreign policy – understand this perfectly. Somebody WANTS more extremism. Just like somebody wanted WWI and WWII.

  11. 11. sol

Obama is a Socialist who believes that the state will whither away and love will rule the world when the world adopts Socialism. However, he believes, that evil greedy capitalists have prevented Socialism from working and forced socialist states to adopt oppresive measures to destroy counter-revolutionaries.

His goal is to use the $960 billion defense budget to 1) convert capitalist USA to Socialist USA, 2) to destroy capitalism, and 3) to let love rule the world through Socialism.

This means total disengagement from all foreign entanglements which is why he has broken the Special Understanding with Great Britain, why he works to eliminate Israel, why he has abandoned Eastern Europe, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Lebanon, UAE, and every ally in the world.

Under Obama we will Give Love A Chance and we will see if this will create a better peace than we had under Pax Americana.

    Richard, RICHARD, RICHARD,

Anyone who believes that Barry was happy to give the kill order is wallowing in some weapons grade stupidity! Our Commander in Chief could only sit on the fence as long as the Preparation H held out. At some point he had no choice but to say Yea, or Nay. B. Hussein’s Yea was a politically calculated act which broke his heart to have to do, but he was left no choice. There is No way the news doesn’t get out that we had Bin Laden and the White House Chef of this Turd Sandwich our Foreign Policy has become, let him go free. End Game. Nothing would save him. Even the Democrats would have no choice but to abandon him and nominate Hillary to run in 2012. Hurtful for him personally as it might be, he is a political animal.

  13. 13. teragrinch

Obama said he wanted to “fundamentally transform” America. What part of “fundamentally transform” do you not understand? Transform means to fundamentally change. So he wants us to be … what? I think a third-world country at best Powerless. No influence in the world. I think he pretty much hates America. His actions say he hates Israel. So I 100% agree with Carl Sesar and BlackRedneck and all the others who say he is doing exactly what he wants to do. He does look incompetent to most because who would believe he could possibly WANT to do such a thing. Obama’s words don’t often tell the truth. But his actions do. He wants to destroy America and he would be quite happy to see Israel annihilated. Obama understands what he’s doing.

  14. 14. Warlord

I firmly believe our president is as much of a traitor to this country as ex
Senator Mitchell(Lebanese) is a traitor to Israel. They both seek the destruction of Israel while acting under the guise of seeking peace.

  15. 15. Principlex

Reading O’s history and the history of those he consorted with in his rise, his whole talent is based on deception – enacting his agenda while no one knows it. (I’m thinking “Radical-in-Chief” by Stanley Kurtz here.) The effects of his actions always hurt the people he claims to want to help. (I’m thinking of his law to prevent police stopping black kids in high-crime neighborhood which, when stopped, resulted in more crime. But this list is very long.) Those people are his pawns to be used to gain power.

Whenever a man can use a human being in bad straits to advance his campaign (think of all the people he has brought to his side at the podium to show us how much these people need the government to “help” them) thereby encouraging dependency on the government, he undermines human being at root – his power to create/produce the values that he needs to survive and prosper. He despises responsibility and undermines mature behavior at every turn. For this reason he is as despicable as anyone can get and I think attains the honor of being one of the world’s most evil men.

What Obama is doing is setting Israel up for destruction. Whether it’s intentional or not, that’s what’s happening. There WILL be another war in the Muddled East within the next decade, probably less. This time, Israel will be so threatened it will have to revert to its nuclear stockpile to save itself. What Obama is doing is preparing the ground for that war, and Israel’s response. Obama will be equally responsible for the consequences.
