Israel: An Introduction

This comprehensive book provides a well-rounded introduction to Israel—a definitive account of the nation's past, its often controversial present, and much more. Edited by a leading historian of the Middle East, Israel is organized around six major themes: land and people, history, society, politics, economics, and culture. The book is a significant contribution to Israel publications, being one of the first books to ever fluidly consolidate and describe Israel as a modern State. Finally, Israel provides readers with a solid foundation of knowledge about the Jewish State and provides useful reference lists by topic for those inspired to read further.

“We cannot negotiate with those who say, ‘What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is negotiable.’” — President John Fitzgerald Kennedy

You can read for yourselves Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the U.S. Congress. Both on regional issues and the Israeli-Palestinian question he was quite clear. His speech was vastly superior to those by Obama not just because of the policy content but because he deals with regional realities that the president ignores or just gets completely wrong.

But what I want to talk about here is a remarkable juxtaposition that no one else seems to have noticed. If you understand this article, you can understand all of the problems of the Middle East. If you don’t, please go mess up the lives of people elsewhere.

To set up this point I must first quote extensively from Netanyahu’s speech. He said:

This is the land of our forefathers, the Land of Israel, to which Abraham brought the idea of one God, where David set out to confront Goliath, and where Isaiah saw a vision of eternal peace. No distortion of history can deny the four thousand year old bond, between the Jewish people and the Jewish land.

But there is another truth: The Palestinians share this small land with us. We seek a peace in which they will be neither Israel’s subjects nor its citizens. They should enjoy a national life of dignity as a free, viable and independent people in their own state. They should enjoy a prosperous economy, where their creativity and initiative can flourish.

So this is a classic Western — indeed a classic liberal Western — formulation. We have our rights but we also respect your rights. Let’s find a win-win situation that benefits everyone.

Netanyahu added:

They [the Palestinians] were simply unwilling to end the conflict. And I regret to say this: They continue to educate their children to hate. They continue to name public squares after terrorists. And worst of all, they continue to perpetuate the fantasy that Israel will one day be flooded by the descendants of Palestinian refugees.

In a moment, watch Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas prove Netanyahu’s first sentence to be true.

My friends, this must come to an end. President Abbas must do what I have done. I stood before my people, and I told you it wasn’t easy for me, and I said… “I will accept a Palestinian state.” It is time for President Abbas to stand before his people and say… “I will accept a Jewish state.”

Remember that challenge.

Those six words will change history. They will make clear to the Palestinians that this conflict must come to an end. That they are not building a state to continue the conflict with Israel, but to end it. They will convince the people of Israel that they have a true partner for peace. With such a partner, the people of Israel will be prepared to make a far reaching compromise. I will be prepared to make a far reaching compromise.

In other words, once the Palestinians really acknowledge — which they have not done — the Jewish connection to the land, Israel will know they are a partner for peace and make more compromises.

    Absolutely brilliant, Barry.

Peace does not serve the interests of what the Arab’s Sprung. A trap.

Dances With Words has baited that trap with American Cheese.

Obama and his non-clapping monkey sidekick, have tried to paint Jerusalem into a “world city”, in which it’s current civilians are renter’s of their own land….not allowed to put any additions on without permission from the radical left and their Islamic bedfellows.

In what other nation would we tell them not to build in their own capital? Damascus? Pyonyang? Vatican City? Mecca? Medina? Male, Maldives?

Obama seems to be adopting his inner Bill Cosby in which he believes that America brought Israel into this world…and they can take them out.

The U.N. is a far different place than it was when Truman was in office and Obama and his cabal seem to like this one better.

But, Fiat Albert has to think again if he believes he can get the American people behind this act of disloyalty and ignominy. I know he doesn’t really care much what we the people think or believe and he certainly doesn’t think much of any agreements with Israel, since this is a guy who believes our own Constitution is not a covenant with we the people, but rather, a suggestion…that can be ignored at his whim.

He has just made the world a much more dangerous place. Redistribute that.

Waiting for the Palestinians (really Israeli Arabs) to accept Israel’s right to exist, is like Waiting for Godot. Its never going to happen. They don’t recognize any other religion nor any non-Muslim’s right to exist. So they will not peacefully coexist and they will continue the terrorism and the lobbing the occasional rocket. My solution: have rockets continuously aimed at Gaza and the PA Authority. If they send in 100 rockets, I’d return with 200 of my rockets. That they understand.

Actually, the ‘palestinians’ are Jordanian Arabs, not Israeli. The area was known as Trans-Jordan back then. If I remember my history, the Balfour agreement called for a much larger Israel, but it was trimmed down over time.

What is also omitted by people such as Tony Kushner and by people such as Benny Morris is that:

In 1919, in Paris, at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, the Arab leader Emir Faisal ibn Husseini and the Jewish Zionist leader Haim Weizmann signed the Faisal-Weizmann Agreement to create one Arab state in, and one Jewish State in, the area of land that was constituted by what is now Jordan, and by what is now Israel, and by what is now called “The West Bank” (Judea and Sameria (Yehouda and Shomron)), and by what is now called “The Gaza Strip”.

        and that:

In 1920, British officials named that area of land The British Mandate of Palestine.

        and that:

In 1920, Amin al-Husseini, who was another member of the Arab aristocratic Husseini family, incited Muslim Arab murderous riots against Jewish people in The British Mandate of Palestine.

        and that:

In 1921, British officials appointed Amin al-Husseini to the position of Grand Mufti of Jerusalem.

        and that:

In 1924, Britain created the Arab state of Transjordan in The British Mandate of Palestine and excluded Transjordan from the terms of the Faisal-Weizmann Agreement, in violation of the terms of the Faisal-Weizmann Agreement.

        and that:

In 1928, in Egypt, Hassan al-Banna, an admirer of Adolf Hitler, founded the authoritative-orthodox-Islam-adherent, genocidally anti-Jewish, Islamic supremacist political organization the Muslim Brotherhood.

        and that:

In 1928, later that year, Amin al-Husseini joined the Muslim Brotherhood.

        and that:

In 1929, Amin al-Husseini organized a massacre of Jewish people in the Jewish town Hebron – the Hebron Massacre.

        and that:

In 1935, in the British Mandate of Palestine, Amin al-Husseini and his family created the Nazi-influenced, Nazi-allied, Palestinian Arab Party, with which Amin al-Husseini and his family created the terrorist youth corps militia al-Futuwwa (which Amin al-Husseini called the Nazi Scouts), with which, during the 1930′s, Amin al-Husseini murdered Arab leaders in the British Mandate of Palestine who opposed him.

        and that:

In the 1930′s and 1940′s the Arab world allied with the Nazi regime of Germany and formed Arab Nazi organizations, with many thousands of members, in Arab states

        and that:

Throughout the 1930′s and 1940′s, in Arab states, Arab people engaged in racist anti-Jewish riots and massacres in which they killed, in total, hundreds of Jewish people

        and that:

From 1941 to 1945, Amin al-Husseini resided in Germany, and was an adjoined official of the Nazi regime of Germany; Amin al-Husseini, with his colleague Adolf Eichmann, was a co-architect of the genocide of the Jewish people in Europe by the Nazi regime of Germany.

        and that:

In 1946, Britain granted autonomy to Transjordan which was then renamed Jordan.

        and that:

In 1947, the then-newly-founded United Nations proposed, by a majority vote, the creation of one Arab state in, and one Jewish state in, the part of the British Mandate of Palestine that had not become Jordan; Britain abstained from that vote; the Jewish leaders of the Jewish community in the British Mandate of Palestine accepted that proposal; The Arab League, representing the Arab leaders in the Middle East, refused that proposal.

        and that:

On May 15, 1948, at a press conference in Cairo, (reported on by the New York Times, on May 16, 1948), one day after Israel declared independence, Azzam Pasha, Secretary General of the Arab League, declared “Jihad”, Islamic religious war, against Israel, and stated that the Muslim Arab states rejected the partition, into one Arab state and one Jewish state, of the part of the British Mandate of Palestine that had not become Jordan, and stated that the Muslim Arab states intended to set up an Arab “United State of Palestine”; and that: At that press conference, Azzam Pasha stated, about the declared planned Muslim Arab attack on Israel: “This will be a war of extermination and a momentous massacre which will be spoken of like the Mongolian massacres and the Crusades.”; Afterward, Arab leaders instructed Arab people in Israel to leave Israel, and told lies, saying that Israeli soldiers had committed atrocities against Arab people in Israel, which were lies that frightened many Arab people in Israel, and which caused many Arab people in Israel to flee from Israel.

        and that:

In 1948, several days after Israel declared independence, the armies of several Arab states, joined by British soldiers, attacked Israel; Amin al-Husseini, as the head of the Arab Higher Committee, coordinated that attack on Israel by those armies of those several Arab states.

        and that:

Amin al-Husseini was the mentor of, and an uncle of, Egyptian-born Yasser Arafat (Mohammed Yasser Abdel Rahman Abdel Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa al-Husseini); In 1958, in Egypt, Yasser Arafat, under the guidance of Amin al-Husseini, founded Fatah.

        and that:

From 1949 until 1967, Jordan occupied (annexed as part of itself) Judea and Sameria (Yehouda and Shomron) – which Jordan renamed to the name “The West Bank” – referring to that area of land as “the west bank” of the Jordan river.

        and that:

From 1949 until 1967, Egypt occupied (annexed as part of itself) what is now called “The Gaza Strip”.

        and that:

The 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel created 800,000 to 1,000,000 Jewish refugees from Muslim states in the Middle East, where the families of those Jewish refugees had lived, for many hundreds of years, as second-class, and third-class, citizens; The Jewish refugees from Muslim states in the Middle East found refuge in Israel and became citizens of Israel; The still living members of, and the descendants of, those Jewish refugees constitute over 50 percent of the Jewish population of Israel; The still living members of, and the descendants of, those Jewish refugees refer to themselves as Mizrahi, which means “Eastern” in Hebrew.

        and that:

The 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel created 450,000 to 700,000 Arab refugees from Israel; Very many of those Arab refugees had migrated to the British Mandate of Palestine, seeking work in, and finding work in, the Yishuv – the then-thriving Jewish community in the British Mandate of Palestine – only a few years before the Muslim Arab attack on Israel in 1948; The period of time which the United Nations defines as being the period of time that an Arab person who fled from Israel before, or during, or who was expelled from Israel during, the 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel, had to have lived in pre-Israel before the 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel in order to be defined as a refugee is *TWO YEARS*; The Arab refugees from the 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel, and the, currently several million, descendants of the Arab refugees from the Muslim Arab attack on Israel, began to be called the ‘Palestinian’ Arab refugees – the ‘Palestinians’ – in the 1960′s, and do not live in Israel, and are not citizens of Israel, and live in what is now called “The West Bank”, which is governed by Fatah-PLO-PalestinianAuthority, and in what is now called “The Gaza Strip”, which is governed by Hamas, and in refugee camps in Muslim Arab states, and have been kept as refugees for over 60 years by Arab leaders and by the leaders of the governments of Western countries.

        and that:

Since the end of World War II, there have been tens of millions of refugees in the world, almost all of whom have been relocated to, and absorbed into, the countries to which they fled or were expelled (such as several million ethnically German people who, immediately after World War II, were expelled from the Sudetenland of Poland, and who were, subsequently, relocated to, and absorbed into, Germany).

        and that:

The still living members of, and the descendants of, the Arab people who did not flee from Israel immediately before, nor during, and who were not among the few Arab people who were expelled from Israel during, the 1948 Muslim Arab attack on Israel, live in Israel and are citizens of Israel, and constitute approximately 20 percent of the population of Israel.

        and that:

Approximately 20 percent of the citizenry of Israel are Arab.

        and that:

Approximately 80 percent of the Arab citizenry of Israel are Muslim.

        and that:

Approximately 20 percent of the Arab citizenry of Israel are, in some cases, Druze, and, in other cases, Christian.

        and that:

All citizens of Israel have equal rights by the law in Israel, and have equal protection under the law in Israel; Israel is a free liberal democratic country.

        and that:

Israel is one of the smallest countries in the world; The land area of Israel is approximately 1 percent of the total land area of the Middle East; The land area of Israel is approximately the size of New Hampshire (one of the smaller of the 50 states of the United States of America); The land area of Israel is approximately the size of Venezuela.

        and that:

The population of Israel is approximately 7.5 million people – 7.5 million citizens of Israel.

        and that:

There are over 20 Muslim Arab states in the Middle East.

        and that:

There are several European states in the world.

        and that:

There are 56 Muslim states in the world.

        and that:

There are several officially Christian states in the world.

        and that:

There are many national states in the world (Thailand, Japan, over 20 Arab states, several European states, etc.).

        and that:

There is only one Jewish state in the world – Israel.

        and that:

The government of the United States of America gives a total of over 3 billion dollars of financial aid per year to Muslim Arab states in the Middle East; The government of the United States of America gives approximately 2 billion dollars of financial aid per year to Egypt alone; The government of the United States gives more military aid to the Saudi family dictatorial Islamic regime of Saudi Arabia than the government of the United States gives to any other state in the world.

        and that:

The largest, and controlling, voting bloc in the United Nations, and the controlling body of the United Nations, is the OIC (the Organization of the Islamic Conference), which is a coalition of 57 Muslim governments – 56 Muslim states plus Fatah-PLO-PalestinianAuthority.

        and that:

The Human Rights Council of the United Nations is headed by representatives of the regimes of totalitarian Muslim states.

        and that:

Totalitarian petroleum-producing Muslim Arab states in the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia, are some of the wealthiest states in the world. The total petroleum revenue income of petroleum-producing Muslim Arab states in the Middle East is several hundred billion dollars per year. Petroleum is the foundational commodity of the economies of all of the Western countries of the world.

        and that:

Israel provides more advances in life-saving, and quality of life improving, medical technology, and more advances in earth saving, natural environment protecting, technology, and more advances in high-tech information technology, to the world than does any other country in the world.

The Islamic supremacist regime of Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

        and that:

Approximately only seventy years have passed since the Western world, as a whole, in many cases directly murdered, and in other cases, consciously allowed to be murdered, almost all of the Jewish people in Europe

The “I was here first” argument doesn’t work. The history of civilization is a history of mirgrations, abandonments and conquests. Maybe the Navahos were on their land a few hundred years before the Spaniards before the Mexicans before the Americans….but there were people living there 10 to 15 thousand years before them and nobody will ever be able to decipher who came first or second or third.

If the US doesn’t intend to cede New Mexico to the Navajos, and Australians aren’t going to cede Australia to their aborigines, and and; why should Israel cede anything to the make-believe people who call themselves Palestinians.

It isn’t about who has the better claim. If it were, there can be no question whatsover that the Jews have the better claim. It’s about a medieval culture and religion trying to assert dominance in a world that passed it by hundreds of years ago.

It’s not going to happen, because Israel will bring down Islam if Islam buys the weapons to bring down the Jews.

The amazing thing is that our little boy king knows it full well, yet insists that the Jews agree to allow themselves to be annihilated.

If all of his other actions don’t prove that he is insane, surely that does.

“Israel will bring down Islam if Islam buys the weapons to bring down the Jews”.

“It’s not going to happen, because Israel will bring down Islam if Islam buys the weapons to bring down the Jews.”

You’re reading my mind. It’s possible and totally understandable to many that Israel would be totally justified to launch as many as they deemed necessary into the terrorists camps. Get it over with cause the Jews know in their hearts this will never end.

And they will never get on trains gain nor will they surrender their weapons and defenses again..nor wil they go along like the sheep they did 60 years ago…..without annihilating, once and for all…those who wish to kill and persecute them.

I’m willing to pay $10 per gallon if Israel decided to waste the Arabs once and for all.

Don’t need them…and the world will be a much safer, saner place when the islamists are gone.

    • Mike2

“but there were people living there 10 to 15 thousand years before them and nobody will ever be able to decipher who came first or second or third.”

In the American Southwest the ancestors of certain of the Puebloan peoples are more than likely the descendants of the ice age hunters and, they have been quite successful in recent years in getting back portions of their land and water rights from the government. The Athabascans and other groups came much later.

On the other hand, the Israelis do have a good claim to their land and both the Bible and archeology confirm it and there is not much Obama can do about that.

Barry Rubin – Excellent, and cfbleachers, spot-on. Several points: Netanyahu said: “No distortion of history can deny the four thousand year old bond, between the Jewish people and the Jewish land.” That is not quite right. It’s really a bond between the People of Israel and the Land of Israel. The Jewish bond exists only because the Jews were a component of the People Israel. (Remember, the Kingdom of Israel was destroyed about 710 BCE; the Jews are the remenants from the Kindgdom of Judah, once united with Israel.)

As for the Arab connection to the Canaanites, that arises only because of forcible conversions of Jews to Islam. Why is that so? If you notice, in the Book of Judges, there are Canaanites, in the Book of Samuel, they are gone. Where did they go? Most likely assimilated into the Israelite state. So, the Israelites (and through them, the Jews) carry the Canaanite genes. Hence, whatever Canaanite genes the Arabs possess, the genes have come to them through the Jews.

At the end of the day, none of this matters. The Arabs can lie to the infidel, and so they can make up any story they want. At the heart of this whole conflict is Muslim political philosophy (aka Islam). It holds that any piece of land every held by Muslims is eternally Muslim. Hence, the Arabs can never truly make peace with Israel. Any peace remains contingent. To see this, remember what bin Laden said after 9/11. It is that the Muslims will get (or have a claim to) Andalus. What is Andalus? It is Andalusia, aka Spain.

  5. 5. Leo

The conflict Israel is in, is not with the Palestinians rather with the larger Arab world. In 1948 Israel weren’t attacked by so called Palestinians, they were attacked by combined Arabs armies from all over the region. If the Arabs wanted a Palestinians state they could established one during their 19 years of occupation of Judea and Samaria. According B. Hussein Obama and The Palestinian Muslims the Arabs occupation between 1948 and 1967 never existed. The Palestinians are the victims of their own brothers who are using them as pawns
    for their own benefits.

  6. Nobody has ever said it better. The “palestinians” are pathological, inflexible Jew haters who have NEVER, EVER made a single concession and will NEVER negotiate. For Abbas as for Hamas, the Jews are less than pigs, and deserving of death.

Western “thinkers” refuse to confront the truth that Islam is a primitive, barbaric, conquest-centered theology that admits no alternative. There can never be an Islamic Democracy, because the Quran permits no other religion or political party or persons, except as disenfranchised subservients or slaves. To treat it as “morally equivalent” to Judaism or Christianity is absurd. To support it is to invite our own destruction. To fund it is insane.

There has never been a Palestinian state or culture. The Arabs states do not recognize them as such, and refuse to give tlhem citizenship, treat them as trash. That the UN recognizes them as a state and takes their “cause” is a flat-out exercise in organized anti-semitism, and may rightly compared to Nazism.

    • Abdul Kareema Wheat

“Western “thinkers” refuse to confront the truth that Islam is a primitive, barbaric, conquest-centered theology that admits no alternative.”

And until Islam is destroyed just like the Nazi’s they are…there will be no peace. Islam is the enemy…..Islam is the oppressor…Islam is a curse upon all of mankind. And thus…they must be destroyed, forever. And their followers banished from civilized society.

  7. 7. Tex Expatriate

In 1958 when I was becoming sentient politically and again, every ten years after that, I have understood that peace was not possible in the Middle East until the Israelis defeated the enemies who have sworn to destroy them. Now, if that was so easy for me to understand way back then, and to continue to understand today, why has every U.S. President since I began voting in 1960 continued to blather about Middle East peace?

As a side observation, didn’t Netanyahu shine compared to the little Marxist weasel Obama?

I am so tired of Bibi Netanyahu bending us (U.S. taxpayers) over the table and paying off our CONgress with blood money he gets from murdering Palestinians that I’m ready to scream. Many more Jews were displaced than the few handfulls of arabs that have now bred to over a million in the last 60 years. Genocide my tookus!

As far as I’m concerned the arabs belong in either Egypt (gazans) or Jordan (those occupying Judea and Samaria). Every stinking arab needs to get out of Israel and let the Jews have their little sliver of dirt while the arabs occupy 99.999999% of the rest of the ME and are spreading like a desease all over Africa as we speak – killing the indigenous peoples there.

You must have missed the class about Mohammad.

He’s the blood thirsty killer that leads a band of savages that proclaim “we love death more than you love life”

They dont try to get along, and they’re proud of it.

You also obviously missed the class on Hamas, who’s charter calls for the extermination of jews, proclaiming “Until the Rocks and trees shout out Oh Muslim, there is a Jew hiding beind me, come and slay him”

They are also not trying to get along.
          Pretty simple stuff, my friend.

Just read what THEY say about THEMSELVES.

The rest is, as we say here in America, “self evident”

But I know you missed that class too

you’re not wanted by god’s “chosen people” ?? Explain

Mika…I feel sorry for you. Get your head out of your privileged, naive ass.

It must be heaven for you to live in NY or San FranFreako….or Berkely where you don’t have to be a serious person.

    • lolly

PS – Name me a Palestinan (that they pronounce BALestinians since their language doesn’t even have the letter “P”) before the Egyptian Arafat.

    • michiganruth

I bet your uncles would be really proud of you now.

  10. 10. PGlenn

mika – thanks for providing the Democrat perspective; in so doing, you’ve also been able to translate the sophisticated Arabisms of Ivy League professors into a language that the durchschnittsbürger . . . er, I mean, the man of the street . . . can understand.

  11. 11. Ragnar

I would say to Abbas, “Sorry dude, the historical and archaelogical record does not support yiour assertion of primacy. The Caananites weren’t Palestinians. Bite me, raghead.”

  12. If the Jews want peace, they shouldn’t have built a homeland where a bunch of other people were already living.

Palestine was a peaceful place before the Zionists moved in.

Announcing that you are “God’s Chosen People” and deserve that land is no different from announcing you are “The Master Race” and seeking Lebensraum for your people.

    • PGlenn

Whereas mika provided us with Democrat strategic “analysis,” you’ve been nice enough to provide us with a Democrat-style history lesson.

The beauty of Democrat/progressive history is that you don’t have to know any actual history. You just revision the “history” to fit your feel-good prejudices. In fact, grounding history in facts just gets in the way of its potential thereupeutical benefits.

    • mika

I’d have to agree. I really don’t have a dog in this race. I’m just a little sick of the U.S. having to supply Israel with a never ending stream of cash and weapons. As for who occupies Israel, I don’t care. It does seem a bit odd to choose a spot smack dab in the middle of a country of people who hate you. For the record, I don’t hate Jews or Muslims. I hate that they can’t seem to get along. I mean, despite biblical records, who wants to live in the middle of a desert anyway? Why couldn’t Jews have taken part of Switzerland, Norway, or a nice Caribbean isle? Seems a MUCH more agreeable solution (and the neighbors are so much nicer!)

      • Jack in Silver Spring

mika – The cash and weapons were a payoff for giving up the Sinai desert. I would have preferred for the US to keep the cash and weapons and for Israel to keep Sinai.

      • Bonny Kate

“I really don’t have a dog in this race.”

        Bwaahahahahaa!

      • lolly

The “cas” is actually chits which they buy our military equipment – thus keeping our people working and stimulating our economy. They can’t use the so-called “money” anywhere else FOR anything else.

It was also in return for giving up the Sinai. Hence we also give Egypt the same amount of “money.” Are you going to insist that we stop giving Egypt our “money?”

      • SukieTawdry

There will not be peace in the Middle East while the Jewish state of Israel exists. At best there will be a absence of war. Even if the Palestinians should get themselves a state by agreeing to Israel’s non-negotiable terms (which they won’t), there won’t be peace. Even if Israel should capitulate to a two-state solution foisted upon it by the UN (which it won’t and, anyway, even this administration would tell the UN to pound sand), there won’t be peace. Let’s stop pretending otherwise and direct our efforts to maintaining the absence of war to the extent we have interests (which, like it or not, are varied and many).

Throughout human history, true and lasting peace has come as a result of conflicts in which one side has been beaten into bloody submission if not unconditional surrender. If it should come to that in the ME, I know who my money’s on.

        • SukieTawdry

This was not meant to be a reply to Mika (I mean, why would I waste my time). Apologies for the posting error.

        Where to begin…

you are just so completely ignorant, where should I start?

        OK, I’ll speak SLOWLY….

THIS is a ROCK, and THIS is…..

    • If you stopped hating Jews long enough to learn what is implied by chosenness in Jewish thinking, you might see that your comparison is garbage. The Jews found their claim to nationhood on the idea that their God is the God of everyone else and that He provides no guarantee of favour to those he first chose (or those who first chose the challenge) to discover and teach just this concept of monotheism. So, compare “you should be a nation like us” to “we must be supreme over all the world”. If you can’t figure out which “we” is the Jew and which one the orthodox Muslim, or the Nazi, you’re a dolt.

    • Rich

“Palestine was a peaceful place before the Zionists moved in.”
Before the Zionists moved in, Palestine was part of the Ottoman empire – and the Palestinians were mcuh worse off than they are now.

  13. 13. General P.Malaise

    nice eassy Barry Rubin.

sadly you could have written the same thing in 1948, 1967. 1973 and possible infinitum. this has been a constant with the arabs.

time for the Israelis to stop all concessions. it is always the Israelis who compromise ..not unlike the republicans compromising with the democrats and never the other way round. BASTA.

    bring back the iron fist.

  14. 14. Harris Tweed

  15. 15. cfbleachers

The Palestinians claim a 7000 year old title to this land. In all that time, they never once made a country. In fact, never made a language. Never built a dam, never had a ship sail.

Before the persecuted Jews were given BACK this land, that all the pages of history refer to as their homeland, the “Palestinians” could have put down a stake and built what is now Israel. They didn’t. When Hitler was exterminating Jews in ovens, the “Palestinians” had free rein to petition or seize what they now say was “theirs”. They didn’t.

When it was only other Arabs making claim to the soil, “Palestinians” had no burning interest in building their “own” country.

Yet, when the world gave the barely surviving and perpetually persecuted a sliver of land to call their own, and a place to lay their weary head…then…and only then…did this very same tiny strip of land cause the “Palestinians” to want to call it “home”.

A Jewish homeland is not a toddler’s toy, only to be wanted because another now has it. And no bully…over there…or over here…has the right to steal it away. Ever.

    • The Root '83

      AMEN BROTHER!

That statement should be recited in every civics, history, and political science classroom on this planet.

But since most “institutions” (be they political or academic) are corrupted entities, for which the simple truth is a poisonous barrier to their suckling of the public trough, it will never be.

  16. 16. Antivenin

High time for Israel to stop even talking about concessions and sacrifices. Just makes the country look weak. Next time the “Palestinians” and the other Muslims attack Israel again, Israel should annex outright all the land it needs to get safe borders and have done with it. Expel all the Muslims from Israeli territory if necessary. After all, if there ever is a Palestinian state, you can be sure the “Palestinians” will demand it should be Judenrein.

  17. 17. Leatherneck

There is no such people as the Palestinians. They are mostly from Jordan, and Egypt. This issue of a two state solution is a lie.

There will be one state. Israel, and there will be a so called Palestinian terrorist encampment. All those who support the terrorists will be cursed.

Most of the world system will worship the creation, support the terrorists to keep the oil flowing, be cursed, and hate the Jews for worshiping the Creator of heaven, and earth.

The same chapter and verse over, and over for 3 thousand years, except we near the end of the Book.

    • Jack in Silver Spring

Leatherneck – Actually, the ‘Palestinians’ are mostly from Syria and Bosnia, and probably constitute some Jews forcibly converted to Islam in the middle-ages.

      • Leatherneck

2.6 million live in Jordan. I can understand Syria, but Bosnia I do not understand where you got that information. Anyway, these Arabs sided with the Arab invasion of 1948 even after they were offered a place in the reborn Israel.

Again, these followers of Muhammad sided with the Arab invasion of 1968, 1973, the last two Infidads(sp), about 7,000 rockets, murders, etc… Not the type of people anyone would enjoy living next to.

      • lolly

Actually, the real Palestinians ARE the Jews. The Romans changed their name (and forbade them to speak their language) in a vain attempt to wipe a hated enemy off the face of the Earth.

Today, Jews are back in Israel and Rome is a memory.

        • mikda

You need to get over it already! Da Jews ain’t for the most part in the desert. NOT the arabs who have openly stated that then entire PLANET belongs to them. Yeah – ya’lljust want what’s coming to you right – the whole planet – right?

    • James Green

The word Palestine is a derivative of the older term “Philistine” and we all know the Philistines are from that area….but…there is archeological evident that demonstrates that the Philistines had much more in common with Cypriotic and Mycenean people! So essentially, they are Greeks, so send them to Greece!

As long as it’s permissable to use history as a means of greater claim by one group over another to a plot of land, let’s allow all peoples of the earth the same privilege! Hey UK, go ahead and reclaim all of the colonial lands in Africa because, technically, that’s where all humans come from and really, your just returning home!

This is the example I use when faced with the “who has greater claim” argument because it reveals the stupidity of the argument.

      • DavidMac

I say that the Palestinians can have a new state comprised of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Manhatten/Long Island. There are few (if any) sane people there, anyway. As an added feature, we’ll throw in Newark. Newark sucks, anyway.

  18. 18. Sam Parsons

Excellent analysis. Everything that you said is true. No argument is possible. Thanks.

All this quibbling over who was where first or who has a claim blabbidy blah. The situation is this; an iron-age barbaric culture is attacking modern western civilization. Their position is “all for us, none for you”; ” heads we win, tails you lose”, etc. They cannot be negotiated with, they cannot be reasoned with. They are savages. If they have their way, they will wash us all away in a sea of blood.

The fallacy that palestinian supporters in the west labor under is that all people are just people and we all are the same. Ugh. We are not the same, not at all. My dog is more one of us than islamists are.

The time is coming when westerners will realize that mortal danger is at the door, and like we have in the past, we will stiffen our resolve and do what we do best. I know who started the fight, why there can be no peace, and who is going to win in the end. The piece of cheese we have for a president has no clue about any of this.

  20. 20. don

Yes, but I think it’s really a reaction formation to the Bush on the part of Obama. If Bush did it or was for it, Obama’s against it. It’s a Dallas versus Chicago sort of thing. Bush was for Israel before Obama was against it. Bush rehabilitated Gadaffi after hanging Sadam; Obama (using NATO) is bombing Gadaffi to prevent an alleged genocide against his own people; it’s the new Obama preemptive war against genocide doctrine. Apparently this doctrine only applies to Libya. And Obama is leaving Iraq to the Iranians because Bush was for Iraq without the Iranians. Bush was against Syria and for the Cedar revolution and springtime in Lebanon; but Obama is in outreach mode to the Syrian dentist as he kills his own people during their Arab summer of discontents. And gee, now Lebanon is back in the Syrian fold! Ditto for the Iranians during the brief Persian Spring; Obama sat it out doing Muslim outreach to the butchers of Teheran! And now the Bush agreement to end the civil war in the Sudan is unraveling too; and the anti-Bush Obama is just standing by as Sudan’s Muslims invade the new state in former southern Sudan, formerly the nexus of Darfur. Gee, wasn’t Bush for a Palestinian state too? Damn those reaction formations, they can get real people killed.

  21. 21. Akatsukami

If it were not for the suffering that would accompany it, it would be cruelly amusing to see the Piggistinians achieve their goal. Thirty seconds after they had done so, the UN refugee money would dry up, the Arab brothers would send in their armies to divide up the land (and incidentally murder, rape, and rob the indigenes), and Eurotrash and Petulant Lefties like ExtraStout and mika would look down their noses at them in horror and shriek, “Get away from me, you smelly little goat herder, or I shall call a gendarme!”

    • michiganruth

well, maybe Stout. Mika wouldn’t be saying anything. she’d be veiled, and if she tried to say something, she’d be beaten. if she was snotty enough (and we can already see she is!) her male relatives might just honor-kill her.

ya know, it might almost be worth it to see the Jew-haters actually having to live under the Muslim rule they so obviously desire.

  22. 22. stuart wiliamson

The essential message that every American should have taken away from Bibi’s speech to Congress should be that his tiny nation, the only true democracy and ally the U.S.A. has in the bleak heartland of a blood-hungry Islamic wasteland, values our support, understands it’s situation better than anyone else, and is quite prepared to take care of itself, thank you. It stands up to hypocracy, betrayal, evil, without victimizing or beseaching or bowing to petty tyrants.

This Prime Minister sowed himself a mensch, in contrast to a self-worshipping, self-indulgent, petulant apologist.

As for sending them money and weapons, it is the cheapest defense expense we could make. If Iran puts its foot across the line the Israelis have written in the sand we know who will make the first strike. Israel is our first line of defense, not just a tin-pot UN-clinging despotilsm.

  23. 23. James Jones

It is time for Israel and the US to remember this hard truth about international relations:

“The great questions of the day are not decided by parliamentary speeches and majority votes. They are settled by blood and iron.”

Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in a speech to the Prussian Parliament in 1878.

The long-term strategic goals of the Israelis and Palestinians are not reconcilable by negotiations — unless they are negotiations for the surrender of Israel to the Palestinians. This conflict will continue until one side or the other wins a decisive victory and destroys/expels the other side’s population base.

I will support our ally Israel in waging a decisive war against the Palestinians. It is painfully obvious that President Obama will not. It is also painfully obvious that President Obama lacks Chancellor Bismarck’s deep understanding of geopolitical realities. So this conflict will sputter along until the Palestinians and their Islamic allies think they have built up enough combat power to crush Israel and they will try again, and again, and again ……. until they win. Unless Israel wakes up and crushes them first.

  24. 24. 11B40

    Greetings:

The other evening, I watched a program on the Progressive (neé Public) Broadcasting System about the archeological work being done in Israel. A map was shown delineating Israel and “Palestine”, the latter actually being what has become known as the “West Bank”. A short while later, another map was shown indicating the sites of the archeological digs that had discovered remains of ancient Israel. The large majority of them were located on the “West Bank”, so much so that the “Palestine” label was removed for lack of space. Kind of a science versus mythology type of thing, if you get my drift.

    • Bohemond

Hardly a secret; the heartland of ancient Israel was the hill country, not the coastlands. Which is why Isrelis refer to the West Bank as “Judea and Samaria.”

  25. 25. Tevagirl

Thank you for this excellent, precise deconstruction. I am most grateful that you have put into words the disconnect that I sensed, but was having trouble so elegantly expressing. Yashar Koach!

  26. 26. An Old Jew

A wonderful article of which the content must be stated over and over – for there are millions upon millions of Mika’s in this world today. I’m – so so sad to say.

  27. 27. michiganruth

excellent article. Bibi completely PWNED the president. it doesn’t hurt that he has righteousness on his side too, but even just in terms of eloquence, he wiped the floor with Obama. (I bet Bibi knows not to talk over the national anthem too.)

you know the most interesting thing about Abbas and the so-called Palestinians? they are obsessed with getting rid of the Jews. but after that–they have no plan! no dreams! no goals or ideas!

have you ever heard a Pal say “once we have our own country we will grow fertile orchards and feed our people…we will build great universities and educate our children…” or anything even resembling that? never.

no. what you hear is “when the Zionist entity is destroyed, the land will again be part of the Caliphate.” and then what? they don’t care.

let’s face it, THE goal of the “Palestinian” people is to kill the Jews and destroy Israel.

personally, I’ll stick with life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. and yes, I’m making a value judgment: our western culture IS BETTER THAN ISLAM!

  28. 28. PaulM

I am not Jewish. Prime Minister Netanyahu is correct. When all of Israel’s neighbors paid homage to gods of various sorts, Israel stood alone, paying homage to YHWH, the unpronounceable term by which the people of Israel identified God. Mohammed did not arrive on the scene until the seventh century AD. Christianity acknowledges the devotion of the Jewish people to the same God to which Christianity gives obeisance. It is simply not possible for the United States nor the United Nations to dictate a solution which ignores these facts, President Obama to the contrary notwithstanding.

  29. 29. white tiger

If you were emperor of the world, how would you resolve the hostility between the PA and Israel?

I would tell the PA, and all the world, “To reject Israel is to reject me. To attack Israel is to attack me. To fail to deal with Israel in a friendly, helpful, mutually beneficial manner is to so deal with me. And the penalty for choosing to behave wrongly toward me is annihilation.”

The Imposter-In-Chief needs to make a similar statement.

    • Leatherneck

I would change the ROE, secure the southern border, deport illegal aliens on the sugar tit, trial for Treason for the FED, the Bull Dike at Homeland inSecurity, Billery, DaOne and his CFR controlled government, place tariffs on the CHICOMMS, stop giving money to other countries, then go have a few cold ones at the Marine Corp Ball.

      BZO, or Die!

  30. I have the perfect name for the newly formed nation of the “Palestinians”: Pawnistan! They are the most pitiful bunch of pawns on the planet.

  31. 31. Bob From Virginia

I am not even wondering whether the Palestinians will still be whining about the right of return 30 years from now? Being a perpetual victim has got to be the greatest excuse in history. Fix the plumbing, right after we regain our homeland and so forth.

The lefties are right about one thing, Israel will not do what is necessary to obtain peace. Unfortunately that is to round up 500,000 Arabs, torture them to death on TV and throw a party. After that not only will there be peace but Israel will be chosen to lead the Arab League.

If anyone thinks I’m kidding they do not know the Arab world.

BTW “the Chosen people” refers to being chosen to be a nation of priests and teachers, not as a declaration of superiority.

  32. 32. Ken Besig, Israel

The Arab Islamic societies routinely make up their own facts and even alter history into a form they prefer, usually one which erases their foes, presents them as innocent victims, and always creates the picture that the Arab Moslems are at the mercy of forces beyond their control.
This is why most Arab Islamic states are oppressive, impoverished, uneducated, and violent and this is why they will stay that way.
Mature developed societies can step outside their experience so to speak and see their inherent flaws and inconsistencies.
Arab Islamic societies never have and never will.

First of all that jfk.quote was dead-on.The last pro-america democrat president! But my beef is this. The gop need to be straight with the american people, regarding barack obama, and his minions. It amazes me.one day the gop,is claiming barack obama is a brilliant genius.two years ago, other than sara palin, the majority of the gop,was more of a campaign manager for barack obama, than the d.n.c.Slobbering all over them selves,of his brilliance, and how they wanted him to succeed.Well they got their wish, didn’t they? While those like sara palin were being sabotaged by the gop,for not bowing to barack obama’s alter, and kissing his majesty’s ring of shame to america. So much for vision, judgement, and character analisis,of what they percieve is qualifications to be president. If you are a great liar,A great thief,An adulterer,A sexual predator.A sex, drug, and human rights, lives, opportunity, property, and liberty trafficker,And an enemy of the u.s.constitution,and subservient to the united nations.Thats the necessary qualifications to be president of the u.s. today,in the gop,and dnc.establishment.In karl rove’s george will’s,charles krauthammer, the bush family tree, etc. All who owe their carreers to ronald reagan, now spit on his legacy, his grave, and seek to destroy his message, and vision for america! To help the democrat party diminish america to nothingness.May god have mercy on their treasonist souls. But what makes me even angrier,is their cowardice to take on this president, and this party with the truth.Instead he’s a genius one day,and an uninformed, inexperienced, victim of his staff, the next day! What a crock!!!This president hates this country, has more goals, and plans to bring down the greatness, and prosperity of this country, make us subservient to our enemies by forbidding, and obstructing liberty to prevail. These elitist establishment pimps,in the gop do,and say nothing to stop these traitors to our country.either because they are proffiting from this treason themselves,or are cowardly lions,to frightened, peeing in their pants, shaking in their boots in fear of taking on the mouse that roared.Therfore contributing to the destruction of this country, that our sacrificial lambs, gave, and are still giving under these cowardly lions atthority, their lives, limbs, blood, sweat, tears, and treasure to defend. But unless you hate, deny,or put jesus christ on the back burner, worship abortion/genocide,and want homosexuality, and culture idolworship brainwashed into your children’s minds to worship by parkbench perverts, and child, and society predators. With the ideaologies of charles manson, jeffrey dahmer, btk,Mao se-tung,Che’rivera,karl marx, fidel castro, and hugo chavez.Instead of the gop taking on this president with truth, they sugar coat his predatorial, hate, and domestic economic terrorism, against america, its laws, and founding documents.with lies of their own.Again for fear of these cowardly lions taking on the mouse that roared.they bring shame upon our military, and country.by abandoning these truths which are self-evident.At the same time helping to destroy the credibility of anyone the democrat party fears the most.which is those they blaspheme the most. The democrats tell the gop to remove, and destroy that which offends us like jesus christ, our military, and the u.s.constitution.these elitist establishment gop liberal lapdogs, are more than happy to oblige their new gods,on behalf of their new world order,of evil!!!Jimmy Joe”The Liarfryer”

While I agree with your comment, that has to be the most painful thing I have ever read. The space bar and the enter key are your friends – use them.

  34. 34. Don Carlson

Mr. Rubin has revealed our real circumstance: Israel (and the American people and the Palestinian people) are trapped between the Islamist terrorists (Hamas, Hezbollah, The Muslim Brotherhood, Syria, and Iran) and the neo-Bolsheviks now in power in America and led by Mr. Obama. The nail of truth is of no avail against them. If Americans fail to free themselves in the next election, then comes the wooden stake of war.

  35. 35. R. L. Hails Sr. P. E.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech was a master piece of oratory, but historically more important for its clarity. There will be no peace in that blood soaked land until the Palestinians forever give up their proclaimed, “Right to Return”. The borders of the Jewish state will be defined by a UN charter after world war II, the Jewish victory in the 1967 war, in which their neighbors attempted to annihilate them, and ultimately by peaceful negotiation of the boundaries, between their land and a Palestinian land. There is enough dirt, money, and talent for all to live in peace.

In fairness to the Palestinians, their various weasel words, e.g. in 1988, winked at the inherent right of Jews to own dirt east of the Mediterranean, but the wording is something only a lawyer would love, and the signatory was kicked out of Gaza by an authority that wants, by force of arms, Jews off this dirt. Peace will not happen until the borders are negotiated, sixty year old refugee camps are emptied, and their inhabitants accept that their old deed is a dead letter, their house key no longer works the lock. This is not easy. It must be done.

It is fruitless and harmful to debate whose people has suffered more in the last 7000 years, or whose land is holier. The inevitable result is war, more suffering.

And candid words about peace are worthy to note. There are two types: the peace of standing over the killed body of your enemy, knowing he will never hurt you again, or the real peace of neighbors solving mutual problems in discussion over their common fence.

It is time that the Palestinians speak simple words, as one people. They must choose: peace or never ending war. They have legitimate grievances against Israeli force. They have a right to speak to the world. But they must forswear violence; it is not a solution.

Excellent article. I often try to synthesize this complicated conflict down to some sort of nub. This article does it extremely well. It may not pull in everything – no synthesized explanation could – but I think it explains as best as anything could why Israel has by far and away the moral high ground in this conflict.

Often, I hear pro-Israeli commentators on television parroting bromides about why Israel is in the right (e.g. 1967 borders indefensible, can’t negotiate with Hamas, the bible …). While I certainly appreciate it, what they say is not going to convince hardened pro-Pal thinkers to start seeing things clearly. More analytical, deep thinking arguments such as this just might – although, frankly, I doubt any cogent argument will work against those who are dead-set against Israel because I believe much of their antagonism stems from a predilection of bias against the Jewish people (yes, I know, you are not supposed to say that, but I believe it to be true) that they just can’t (or don’t want to) get away from and not from the fact that they may not have an inherent understanding of the conflict.

Enough of the why Israel deserves to exist on their land more than the Palestinians. I’m tired of the history and bible lessons. Possession is 9.9 tenths of this law.

Who has the right to own your home and land? Surely not the American Indian, even though everyone knows their lands were stolen from them by the Spanish and Anglos, some as late as 150 years ago, not the thousands being noted by some posters regarding Israel. Would you give up your home if a Native American knocked on your door and said you must leave?

And there are other examples all over the world where peoples were displaced by others, and their land claimed – the Kurds in Turkey, Basques in Spain, Irish in Great Britain, etc., etc., etc.

The Israelis have a right to what they have. The only reason for the dispute is because of political and religious issues in the Middle East, not just the region. And as a state Israel must be concerned about present and future security of their people.

Abbas is a moderate because he only wants to expel the Jews, not outright kill them. Until the Arabs accept that a permanent state of Israel exists, the peace process is a waste of time and energy.

no wonder the world is sick of this crap.
no wonder Israelis must ALWAYS be looking over their shoulder
i’m sorry folks, but i’m afraid that is the way it will always be

re: Abbass comments about being Canaanites (as if)

I will quote a great comment I saw on EOZ blog:

if they are the caananites, then the halacha of ger does not apply to them, and israel is commanded to drive them out of the land

someone please thank this spokesperson…he just justified the kahane plan being implemented

    amen
    ……………………….
If Jews are loved bythe world for being victims- Fakestinians will frame themselves as victims
If they see JEws have gained by having Holocaust doen to them- they will imitate and pretend they have been “genocided” NAKBA myth
Jews can prove historical homeland- and here we have them try to attempt a copy of that

if only they would copy WORKING, doing charity and inventing things-
theiris no end to the perverse jealousy to their covetousness
theyalways want rewards without any of the work or sacrifice

I am not shocked but saddened so many people willingly embrace the MYTHS of this ficticious “group”
the repeated lies WORKED for Nazis and work for ISlam on those who have a little jewhate and justify them make them bolder

So we have the MYTHS of the Fakestinains now on equal footing with actual facts and history and a USA president who was raised to belive that ‘equality” that moral equivalence, and lefty Jews who also agree to this new improved revisoning of history

The Fakestinians have cheated ISrael outof JOrdan and GAza and Sinai- and now asked for MORE always MORE

    for what??
Bibi please say NO NO NO more concessions
    no more trying
    no peace farces
    meet fire with BIGGER FIRE
