Israel: An Introduction

This comprehensive book provides a well-rounded introduction to Israel—a definitive account of the nation's past, its often controversial present, and much more. Edited by a leading historian of the Middle East, Israel is organized around six major themes: land and people, history, society, politics, economics, and culture. The book is a significant contribution to Israel publications, being one of the first books to ever fluidly consolidate and describe Israel as a modern State. Finally, Israel provides readers with a solid foundation of knowledge about the Jewish State and provides useful reference lists by topic for those inspired to read further.

There are a lot of complaints about the mass media not reporting important developments. But what about when a major newspaper publishes a revelation of huge global importance and no one pays attention?

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Amr Moussa, the most important and popular politician in Egypt and almost certain to be the next president, stated that the Muslim Brotherhood is going to dominate the country’s parliament. This isn’t me saying this, it’s Amr Moussa:

It is inevitable that parliamentary elections in September will usher in a legislature led by a bloc of Islamists, with the Brotherhood at the forefront.

Might this not be a matter of importance for the U.S. government? Shouldn’t this be a lead story in every newspaper and on every television show? Why isn’t there a public debate about what the United States and European governments will do if (when?) this happens.

Moussa has no motive to distort things. He has no political party running for parliament. Nor is he an Islamist speaking on the basis of wishful thinking. In effect, what he’s saying is this:

I’m going to be president of Egypt and will have to get along with a parliament dominated by radical Islamists. They will write the constitution. I don’t intend to fight against them but to act in a way that they will support me.

Suppose knowing in 1932, months ahead of time, that the Nazi Party would dominate Germany’s government or that the Bolsheviks would gain power in Russia. How about knowing in early 1978 that Iran was going to have an Islamist revolution led by the kind of people who would take hostage the entire U.S. embassy staff and seek to spread anti-American revolution and terrorism throughout the region? Might that have sparked some discussion and action?

The Brotherhood is a radical Islamist group that supports genocide against Israel and violence against the United States. It is anti-Christian and wants to keep women as second-class people. It favors killing homosexuals. Here is Egypt’s foremost politician predicting that they will be to a large extent in control of the country, making its laws, and writing its constitution.

Let me make this clear: In October 2010 I warned that the Muslim Brotherhood was going on the offensive and its leader declared jihad against the United States. I didn’t say this because of something I thought up. I was quoting a speech made by the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. People mourn today because the United States ignored a declaration of jihad by a guy named Usama bin Ladin. Remember him? And then there was September 11.

At the start of Egypt’s revolution, I was the first to point out the dangers. What the mass media ignored in February it accepted as fact in April.

I would not dare predict a Muslim Brotherhood victory by myself. Up until now, I thought the nationalists would form a strong bloc. But with Moussa not organizing a party and everyone else in the country doing little to create a strong anti-Islamist front, I’m going to listen to what Moussa thinks. He ought to know.

There’s also a new factor: the Brotherhood’s alliance with the “Salafists,” that is Islamists even more radical than the Brotherhood. The kind of people who think bin Laden is a great hero. Watch this video to get the flavor of that sector. Prepare for mass demonstrations outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo with rock-throwing and police standing by watching and doing nothing.

Prophets are often cursed with being ignored, especially when it is bad news. There is no satisfaction in having to say ‘ I told you so’.

    The Middle Yeast is rising.

This administration has no substance, it has no standing, it has no influence and it has no will. Therefore, even if it cared enough to intervene (which it does not), it would do very little good.

In fact, they have done enough harm already. This is an administration that has shown very, very, very little interest in Israel’s continued well being, safety and security. Hell, it has shown precious little interest in the safety, security and long term well being of America.

It IS interested in advancing leftist pet theories and projects and leftist voting bloc special interests…AND making Muslims “feel good”. Other than that, it really has no other particular agenda items.

So, why would we expect their boot-licking lackeys in the propaganda ministry to pay much attention to the deteriorating rights of women and homosexuals…or liberty, justice or least of American or Israeli safety, security and well being…in Egypt?

They go stone cold silent on the truth in OUR OWN country…they aren’t going to find a conscience based upon Egypt’s situation. And, you can’t shame them into finding one for the foreseeable future. Check back when it’s absolutely too late. And America and Israel are staring up close eyeball to eyeball with the beast. Then, they will have to pick a side. It’s a coin toss on which side they will choose, but I would not lay heavy odds that it will be OUR side…even then.

Agreed, the CFR controlled government has supported the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, North Africa, and North America for some agenda yet unknown. Also, it appears where there is Islam as the religion, and political system for a country there is going to be problems for all those not Islamic.

The real problem, or worry should be when the UN, US, and the EU pushes israel to accept a terrorist country right next to them reconized by this world system.

I’m not a prophet, but I predict massive storms, flooding, earthquakes, ect…, and much more so than we have seen these past two years for what is planned for Israel by the world system. The CFR globalists should bow their heads in shame.

    • Can you provide a link to that CFR thingy supporting the MB cuz I can’t seem to find it.

I’m not certain cuz usually I rely on facts rather than sheer willpower but I think that “unknown agenda” thingy annoyingly pops up whenever one simply makes stuff up based on unerring instinct and personal self-confidence rather than observable reality.

Yes, I know. I find observable reality annoying too: it’s like that one sock missing thing which is like the Loch Ness Monster thing sorta.

You don’t have a link to that sock thing too do you?

      Thank you for your time.

  4. How in the world can the U.S. stop muslims from being voted for? Maybe a Pinochet type deal? That was one vote one time.

Look, I’m the first to agree that if the MB and salafis can exert their will it will destroy Egypt. You could easily have a “confessionalism” gov’t like in Lebanon which is basically a civil war without the war. It’s stand-off that can’t last forever without falling apart. Unless an Islamic gov’t is laid back foreign investment will dry up and so will tourism.

The more the U.S. and Europe oppose openly Islamists the more they’ll use it against the West and say, “See, the imperialists want to influence our sovereign nation”.

The army is in a tough spot because they know if the Islamist’s come to power the U.S. will transform that army into one fight, one time with no resupply.

Also, saying the MB will be peacefully voted in is a lot different than predicting they’ll simply take over.

The Germans knew Hitler was nuts but he stood up for them and they liked that. Islam feels the same way about Bin Laden. America sees him as an Adolph Hitler – that’s a pretty wide gulf.

    • Leatherneck

This American sees Muhammad as an Adolph Hitler type, but not as smart. Bin laden was just following Muhammad. I think most Americans are smart enough to see things how they really are, and not as you suggest.

What makes you think the CFR controlled US government will help any army against Islamist’s? It appears DaOne, and company are helping as best they can the Muslim Brotherhood in North Africa, Egypt, and North America.

Barack Hussein Obama the “Man with no documented history’ promoted, supported and protected by the people with no morals ‘The Democratic Party and the Lame Stream EneMedia’ and voted in to office by the ‘People with no brains’ the American electorate.

    • Pragmatist

“The Germans knew Hitler was nuts but he stood up for them and they liked that” writes James May (the man who knows everything) .Oh no they didn’t James they blindly worshiped Hitler just like Black Americans blindly worship Obambi. You obviously have not studied WWII and its pre history at all have you. The Germans were the NAZI’s and no moonbat excuses can change that fact, they only stopped being fervent NAZI’s when they started LOSING. Churchill very perceptively said “The Hun is either at your throat or at your feet” and in this he was just as correct as he was about Islam where he said amongst other things “A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property‹either as a child, a wife, or a concubine must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men” which FemiNAZI’s would do well to note. He also said ” “An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.” which left wing Islamophile moonbats and uneducated conservatives RINO’s the world over should understand before its too late.

      • Actually I bet I could beat you in any discussion about WW II which by the way I predicted while standing against a brick wall in a market in Madagascar in 1936 while thinking about something completely different.

I guess I just kinda willed it into being which is something I feel sure you can relate to.

        • Pragmatist

James dont throw your money away you just proved you know nothing about WWII and its lead up. So Madagascar in 1936 hey that would make you about 95 now assuming you were twenty or so then to be able to have a mature enough view of the world. So no wonder you write like a senile old man now. Or are you going to tell us you were an infant prodigy who knew all about the world at an extremely young age and are only 77 or so now but still a senile stage?

          • In your world “proved” is a word that is flexible to the point of non-existence. With you, it could mean almost anything since being an expert on any given subject requires nothing more than confidence and arrogance.

Let’s dig deep without Mr. Google, potshard. What did the BBC not believe about Werth and what innovation happened at the Bismark Sea and what was Burke’s nickname and when’s the one time we famously crossed the “T”?

That’s from my memory and it’s basic stuff for an “expert”.

          • Since I have waited but you cannot answer what you don’t know I’ll give the answers for the curious:

            • Alexander Werth sent a report to the BBC about what he found at Majdanek that the BBC found so disturbing they didn’t at first believe it.

            • Skip bombing at the Battle of the Bismark Sea was innovated and used by B-25s to devastating effect against Japanese surface ships.

            • Arleigh Burke’s nickname was “31 Knot Burke” and he was one of the commanders who changed the tide of surface battles from disasters for the U.S. Navy in the Solomons and Northwards to almost uninterrupted victory.

            • The U.S. Navy crossed the “T” at Surigao Strait during the multi-operational Battle of Leyte Gulf.

Please don’t ever tell me what I do and don’t know about WW II or anything else again: I have one simple rule: I don’t talk about things I don’t know anything about. Challenge me, and you’ll get lit up like you just did Mr. WW II “expert”.

You want a contest, let’s have one cuz I have a ton of stuff well-known to “experts” but which I can pose in a way that is not easily Googled and out of my memory. If I don’t know it, I’ll simply admit it – a concept as foreign to you as are mushroom people on Neptune.

    • Pragmatist

The overwhelming egotism of the malignant narcissist such as you Mr May is hilarious to behold. Caught out in a blatant lie you then try everything possible to belittle your exposer. Too bad for you that I dont play your childish games you fool.

  5. 5. cfbleachers

If the American (and most of the Western civilization) leftists were not in bed with anti-Western forces around the globe…if movies, cable news, print news, magazines, ….which find their way into the hearts and minds of millions, if not billions around the world…that ONE element would have a markedly different impact upon how America, Israel and the West are received.

That betrayal is a force of monumental proportions.

Those lies and distortions pave the way for the “sons of Hitler” to build their roads to our ruin.

To suggest that we can do nothing about it is one thing. To say that nothing could have been done, is dead wrong, imo.

We have been sold out. For those who have an antipathy toward Jews in general, or Israel in particular, may not care much what happens to them. Forget for a moment that person wouldn’t be my cup of tea as a human being, in the slightest. Forget for a moment that anyone who harbors such feelings is a fool on the Israel issue alone. Forget for a moment that turning our backs on our friends is the act of a coward.

    Let’s simply talk basic facts.

That sellout is a two-fer. We would suffer greatly at the loss of such an ally. If we don’t stand behind her as a matter of conscience, as being loyal friends who cut and run at the slightest hint of difficulty, if we have no morals, principles, scruples…and simply act out of absolute self-interest and nothing greater…

…we could never afford to lose such an ally. Or to have her placed in such grave danger without issuing the most clear and concise statement as this…”harm a hair on her head…and it will be the last act you commit”.

THAT we can do. And should…if it comes to it.

  6. 6. The Root '83

“THAT we can do. And should…if it comes to it”

What we should do, and what we WILL do, are two different things.
“We” meaning our government, will not stand by Israel.

Its too difficult to actually do real things, when you are conditioned to believe talk is action, talk is accomplishment, that TALK matters at all.

It is too difficult to take a hard stand, when you are accustomed to the easy limousine ride, and the softball questions.

We will not stand by Israel, because to do so requires us to take a stand AGAINST something we have no intention of ever acknowledging.

Too much heavy lifting, from a moral standpoint, and the “suits” are simply not up to the task. The risk, and the consequences, need to simply “go away” while they look Presidential, Senatorial, Professional, etc. etc.

Very few people in government care about anything. They have spend their lives cultivating phony degrees, phony careers and phony accomplishments to feather their comfortable nests and lofty career facades. Millions can and will die, with no effect at all upon on these phony people and their comfortable status as “movers and shakers”.

Anything that distracts or detracts from “the goal” of maintaining the status quo, the public money, the perks and the prestige of “the club” will be sacrificed. The media whores that dream of “access” and “influence” will not pester them, as long as the invitations to witness the handles of power are still forthcoming. Everyone wants to be seen at the State Dinner,no one wants to pay the bill.

This goes beyond Washington elites, it starts at the local level. School board members spending 30 million for new offices, while my son goes to school in a trailer….

Yet another 9 year old girl murdered by a known sex offender in my Pennsylvania county today…the revolting cliche of ANOTHER released sex offender killing AGAIN, but of course no one in Government could predict it, prevent it…Its simply UNPRECEDENTED they say.

No one is responsible, and the INTENTIONALLY complex and impenetrable web of deceit lies and incompetence that is “government” insures that no one will ever be held accountable…Will he be executed? Of course not. That would be Justice. Justice and Government cannot exist together. Too many government jobs depend on an endless appeal system.

She, at the local level, like Israel at the national level, is to be sacrificed. Another casualty the “beautiful geniuses” are willing to make in the quest to BE beautiful geniuses, with their hands on the levers.

    • Carl Sesar

Sarah Palin will stand up for Israel.

    • Whit

“We will not stand by Israel, because to do so requires us to take a stand AGAINST something we have no intention of ever acknowledging”

May I disagree with you on being AGAINST something. Not that this is the wrong thing to do but should be done by default rather than design. The proper term is to discriminate which means making a choice. Coke or Pepsi? Which ever you choose makes you reject the other. Maybe you don’t want either so you then must be a nuthead or something like that?

If you read the history of the Israelis in the Old Testament you will see how they failed to follow the law as it was given to them and, therefore, followed practices that brought them into bondage. When they again picked up on the law the oppression was lifted. Jeroboam made Israel to sin just as our government is doing today. Did that get the sinner off the hook?

We must displace those things we are against by those things we are for, otherwise you have a good post.

      • I think what they picked up on was the sound of Soviet and American tanks coming to kill the guards.

Then they skedaddled and then they made A-Bombs and now they’re safe.

        The End.

  7. 7. Boogeyman

Egypt is going to slide into the control of Islam-o-fascists. So why isn’t the MSM covering it? Couple of reasons.

    1) No ‘sexy’ narrative.

    2) Besides cutting off the aid $ we send them, there really isn’t anything we can do about it.

Here is my broad view of the region. Islam is a totalitarian political movement cloaked in religion. It teaches its followers that they are the best people in the world, everyone else should submit, convert or die. The religious doctrine is structured in such a way as to make it impervious to a Reformation/Protestant type movement. Islam poses a long term existential threat to all of its neighbors.

There are three broad ways to deal with this threat. The first is to seek stability. Under this strategy we supported friendly dictators so as to secure a supply of oil and suppress jihadi movements. This was Americas strategy from the end of WWII up through 9/11 and, as 9/11 showed, it was a failure.

The second strategy is transformation. Under this strategy we seek to ‘drain the swamp’ of middle eastern culture by introducing freedom, capitalism and the other classically liberal Western values. What we fail to understand is that many people don’t want to be free, just left alone to a certain degree. The best you can hope for in the middle east is a situation like in Turkey. There the military acts as a dike against the ever pressing desire for Islamic imperialism. No dike holds for ever.

As we can see in Egypt and other places the ‘Arab Spring’ will result in either some death and a bit of chaos (but no change in leadership), or people like the Brotherhood taking over.

With these rebellions I believe we are seeing the beginning of the end for the Transformation strategy. There are no Islamic Jefferson’s , Washington’s or Franklin’s and there likely never will be. Islamic nations are the way they are because they are reflections of the Islamic mind. Liberal Western style democracy is foreign to them and no amount of help or ‘Liberation’ is going to change that.

So what is to be done? Containment, appeasement and the support of local strong men didn’t prevent large scale terror attacks. Transformation is likewise failing. If the rebels in Libya succeed they will be an improvement over Ghadaffi only because they will be slightly less goofy. Otherwise it will be the replacement of a murderous, corrupt thug with religiously inspired, murderous, corrupt thugs. One supporter of terrorism will be replaced with more energetic supporters of terrorism.

I believe the third and most terrible option will eventually be used. In times past we could just withdraw from these places, perhaps indulging in the occasional bit of gun boat diplomacy. In the age of nukes this is no longer possible. At some point some fanatic in the ISI will find a way to nuke India. Eventually the mullahs in Iran will get tired of waiting for the Mahdi and will nuke the Jews. Eventually the fanatics will do something so terrible that Israel, Europe and America will react with terrible anger and destroy some (or even many) cities in Muslim majority nations.

I fear this greatly but frankly I don’t see any other way for this to play out, at least in the long run. They will not reform and they will not stop in their desire to attack, kill and conquer. We can’t put a forcefield around their boarders nor can we re-write their holy text’s. After the Jihadi’s take power it will only be a matter of time before they pick a fight they can not win. God help us all. Only Queen Isabella and Charlemagne will be smiling.

    • Pragmatist

Boogeyman the real reason the Lame Stream EneMedia does not cover it is because their annointed one the Messiah Obama was instrumental in preparing the ground for the Mohammedan takeover by the Muslim Brotherhood and they cant under any circumstances admit that the Affirmative Action Anchor Baby made a MISTAKE.

      • Can you name one single thing Obama could’ve done to change Egypt as it is today or keep Mubarak in power?

I mean an actual, real thing connected to actual events that really happened and that people really did and not something brought into being by your innate genius or belief in the power of your own thoughts.

        • Pragmatist

James one thing Obambi could have done was to keep his big nose out of it because his buddies the Mohammedan Brotherhood were only emboldened by his INTERFERENCE on their behalf. Think James think! dont just write drivel.

          • Can you provide a source for saying Obama interceded in favor of the MB or explain how he interfered on their behalf or in fact did one single thing you can prove made a difference because I’m sure it’s news in Egypt?

    • Pragmatist

Come to think of it Boogeyman perhaps the Muslim Brotherhood taking over in Egypt was not because of a mistake by Obama perhaps thats what he REALLY wanted all along and thats scary.

      • johnt

Pragmatist, you got it right the second time.
And if anybody out there wants to counter with the OBL raid, don’t bother. Obama had no choice on that one, ignore OBL and live with the fear of leaks ??
Obama did what any mafioso would do to protect himself.

      • Now the MB has taken over as well? This is news too. You should be a reporter with all these scoops.

Of course it’d help if you could in even the slightest way indicate exactly what is happening in Egypt that you predicted. How can you have predicted something you can’t describe?

With you, this is definitely a trick question.

      • john

The problem is that Islamism would not need a majority of votes to take power, they would need a majority of policeman’s bullets.

Been thinking about this. We all depend on a final non democratic arbiter of right and wrong. The USA has a constitutional republic essentially because the police (or Judiciary) have a dictatorial right to say ‘no’ to some laws.

Iran has a theocracy because the Gaurdian council has that function also, with less desireable ends in mind.

We should not be supporting democracy willy nilly. We should be supporting constitutional frameworks and busily scraping together enough of those dreaded nuclear plants so that when the middle east finally blows up and all the oil becomes radioactive we will have a fallback plan.

Eitherway nukes are in the future.

    • Using personal confidence to unravel Egyptian politics is like dissecting a frog with your eyes.

      • Pragmatist

I see you didn’t take my advice James and continue with your drivel. No the MB is not in power in Egypt YET!!!!! But you want to have a bet that they WILL be in power very soon if not directly then behind the scenes pulling the strings. El Baradei is sucking up to them too you know El Baradei dont you he was the guy who ran interference for Iran and their bombs while at the UN’s Atomic Energy Commission. So he would be a good guy to be in charge wouldn’t he I am sure Obambi thinks so and Obambi’s INTERFERENCE in Egypt has made that a possibility too.

        • Oh my, aren’t we expansive with our qualifiers now. So it’s not YET, or maybe directly but if not behind the scenes and why not include every other possible scenario and then say you predicted it?

Baradei is not sucking up to the MB. He clearly opposes a constitution being drawn up AFTER the elections and has said so publicly – the MB just as clearly wants a constitution drawn up after the elections. If you like, I can use one of those annoying links to a newspaper you’ll say you never heard of which is a major Cairo daily.

Perhaps you yourself can provide one of those annoying links which is actually your lifeline to reality and show me how Obama interfered by not interfering if I’m following your Newspeak correctly.

Unluckily for you, and being an expert on pretty much everything under the sun, I predicted Obama’s interfering non-interference while aboard my yacht, “The Solar Queen” in the Straights of Tiran 2 years before Obama was even born by using bits of cloth and a discarded bolt from a powerline stanchion. It was child’s play really. I’d share my reasoning with you but the level of thinking is of such a high caliber that it would be like showing a monkey a copy of the Declaration of Independence and then expecting it to do something other than wipe it on it’s bottom.

          So I won’t.

          • Pragmatist

There are treatments for malignant narcissists such as you James and I strongly recommend you seek them. I know you are tearing your hair out because I exposed you as the fool that you are so calm down and get a grip of yourself before you do something silly.

  8. 8. Whit

We should be aware that no government, including our own is divine. It is of and for the world.

~ 1Ti 1:9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, ~

There is no reason for this law to be administered by righteous men as has been testified by men like Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Castro. A government is not required to be godly for it belongs to the world and is worldly. That means we are not a Christian nation but a nation influenced by Christ and we have prospered. As we turned away from that influence we have taken on the yoke of bondage.

Our Liberty did not come from our government and our Constitution but both Constitution and government came from our Liberty. Therefore it is not possible for the government to be the protector of our Liberty. We must choose to obey that spiritual law that produces our Liberty by our own desire and volition then insist on a government that supports that Law. Instead we forgot God and turned our freedom over to government control. You see how all this worked?

We are,of course, concerned about the world in general but we must lead by example since we cannot drive the unbeliever to perform the works of the believer. The law does not lead but follows and then uses coercion to herd. The righteous do not need law to give direction but we need rules of order because so much of what is right is also arbitrary, requiring a decision as to protocol.

We can witness and export our system but we cannot force the world to be righteous.

  9. 9. Ben

Majority of Europeans and many people in America are the victims of leftist and Islamist propaganda that Israel is the cause of all the troubles and revolutions in M. E. They are tired of the conflict and hope that the Middle East Islamists will be busy with Israel so the West can have some rest.

    • I agree with your assessment.

Obviously they are the cause of all the troubles in the entire world and not just the middle east.
