COLORADO'S HAYMAN FIRE LOOKS TO HAVE BEEN STARTED BY A FOREST SERVICE EMPLOYEE. Juan Gato comments: "You know, this kind of stuff wouldn't happen if we federalized the U.S. Forest Service."

Comments

"I'm from the government, and I'm here to burn your house down."

I suppose this is a lame attempt at a joke.

And accounting firms wouldn't obstruct justice if they were privatized.

Doesn't she know that federal employees are only supposed to start out-of-control forest fires when under direct orders from Washington, DC, like this one:

1999 Shasta-Trinity Fire started by a BLM employee conducting a controlled burn.

In re: the post by The Comedian:

Around the area where I live, there's a famous and often repeated joke about the forest service and their "controlled" burns:

"They always have a contingency plan when they have a controlled burn -- they bring two matches just in case the first one goes out."

I've been following the Hayman fire closely, as we live in one of the "evacuation alert" areas NE of the fire. As I blogged earlier today, I hope that she gets The Max (15 years, $250,000 fine).

I wonder: Will the Forest Service or Terry Barton be liable for the damages to property caused by the fire? (Did they ever have to pay for the damage cause by their uncontrolled "controlled burns" from a few years back?)

BTW, I have been nothing but impressed with work that the Forest Service has done in their attempts to get the fire under control. The incident commander for the North Hayman Fire, Ron Raley, has been nothing but superb, as I blogged yesterday after the informational meeting.

I actually feel sorry for this woman. She still needs to be locked up, but I still feel sorry for her. Her husband is getting the last laugh.

This never woulda happened if the Forest Service had been given proper resources and raised to cabinet level status.

If she was an outfitter, she'd get a nice bill for the entire firefighting effort without the bother of a civil or criminal trial. As a USFS employee, she'll probably be transfered to Wenatchee NF to help in the lynx survey effort.

a forestry worker? well, i suppose there's only so many trees you can look at before you get sick of looking at them.

Ok, on second thought, throw the book at her. Now news reports are saying that she lied about the letter burning.
